CONCLUSIONS

The author has discovered a uuriL uemling chain of apparently mineralized springs ,n the Brower C"reek Trench In their central and most visible part they have a strike length of approximately y ft meters A spring found on Mrike approximately 400 meters to the nor h of the central part and another found apparently on strike 3t.M") meters to the south ^•oiild possibly exieud their length tu approximately 1-.HX) meters.

l \\o seimmgjy separate springs 1-x.ated at the entrance:" of eagerly trending ru\ bits ha\e a tentative eastern to MHith-eastcrn strike Measurements taken indicate the strike paralleling the ravines and their width being north-south.

t believe that the north trending chain of springs are the surface indication of a mineral deposit

r20. Geochemical Method Development for the Detection of Blind

Mineralization in Clay Belts

R.G. Jackson and D.0P. Stephenson,Sedimentary and Environmental Geoscience Section, Ontario Geological Survey, Sudbury

INTRODUCTIONA multimedia geochemical study was initiated at several sites in the Abitibi greenstone belt, where mineralization is covered by thick sequences of glaciolacustrine or glaciofluvial sediments. The objective was to determine if the dispersion of elements ingroundwater is sufficient to produce a detectable response to mineralization in surface or shallow groundwater, organic-rich media in drainage pathways and A- and B-horizon soils. Many ore deposits occur within recessively weathered

.structures which channel groundwater flow. This water,tMder artesian pressure, may penetrate through clay

too fflfc either vertically or laterally, to enter the surface system.

.termination of elements at the sub-parts per

. evel in surface or shallow groundwater may beit lo detect a weak signal from mineralization atRecent surface water data in an area covered bycial till (Jackson 1993) have indicated a close

. hship between dispersion patterns and geological.res. In this study, geochemical patterns reflected

.as of element enrichmentdue to mineral occurrences, leration and geochemically anomalous till.

The trace-element content of organic sample media may assist in the detection of low trace-element levels dispersed along drainage pathways. The ability of organic matter to concentrate elements is well known. Organic stream bank and bog margin samples have proven to be effective for mineral exploration in areas where overburden is thin or till-dominated (Larsson 1976). Their effectiveness in areas of clay cover have not been adequately tested. While soils have generally not been successful in areas of thick overburden, recent analyses of soils using a patented enzyme leach have yielded anomalies over mineralization buried beneath more than 100 m of pediment gravels (Clark 1992). Some encouraging results were also obtained in an area of clay cover in Minnesota. The enzyme leach is selective to elements adsorbed onto manganese oxides which coat B-horizon soil grains.

FIELD PROGRAMSampling was carried out over mineral deposits in four areas located in northeastern Ontario (Figure 20.1):

Rgure 20.1. Location map of study area, scale 1:1 584 000.

1. HoIt-McDermott gold deposit (Holloway Township)2. Shoot gold zone (Taylor Township)3. West Breccia and South gold zones (Hislop Township)4. Patton base metal showing (Stimson Township)

•Sampling was regional in scope in order to clearly establish background for each geological environment. Each area encompassed approximately 5 to IS kor.Surface water samples were collected from streams, seepage zones and swamps draining mineralization ai:d background areas. Within swamps, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) drive point piezometers were installed at the organic-clay interface to collect water at depth. A YSI 3800 water quality analyzer was used to take in-situ measurements of temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and redox potential. At each stream site, a bank sample was collected which generally consisted of clay with intermixed organics. Preference was given to the most organic-rich material available. At each swamp site, a peat sample was obtained. Preference was given to the most well- decomposed material available.Soil samples from the A and B horizons were collected on selected lines across known mineralization. The A horizon consisted of well-decomposed organics beneath plant litter. The B horizon was well defined only in sandy substrate. Where the substrate was clay, the sample was collected from the mottled zone beneath the dark brown organic-rich surface layer.

ANALYTICAL PROGRAMWater samples were filtered to less than 0.45 pm and analyzed for trace elements by inductively coupled

plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), cations by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, anions by ion chromatography, alkalinity by titration and organic acid content by ultraviolet-visible spectrometry. Selected samples were analyzed for Au.Stream bank samples, peat, A-horizon soil and B- horizon soil were analyzed for trace elements, after an aqua regia digestion, by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-ES). Organic content was determined by loss on ignition. The B-horizon soils were also analyzed for trace elements, after an enzyme leach, by ICP-MS courtesy of Activation Labs Inc.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis project was funded by the Northern Ontario Development Agreement (NODA). Several mining companies made theirpropcrties available for this study: American Barrick Resources Corporation, St. Andrew Goldfields Ltd. and Noranda Exploration Co. Ltd. Activation Laboratories Ltd. provided the enzyme lear' determinations. AU assistance is greatly apprcciatr

Magnetometer Survey For Claim #1204374; Brower Township, Ontario June, 1996

1. Introduction

At the request of Mr. Paul Haire of Cochrane, Ontario, a magnetometer survey was carried out by Gerry O'Reilly on claim #1204374, Porcupine Mining Division, in June. 1996.

The survey was undertaken as a guide to the interpretation of the property geology.

2. Property

#1204374 is a four unit claim near the northwestern corner of Brower Township.

3. Location and Accessibility

Claim #1204374 occupies lot 1 in the northeast section of concession V in Brower Township.

From the town of Cochrane, the property can be reached by driving east along Highway 652 for 41/2 miles to Berndt Road, and then south along Berndt Road for just under 2 km to the northeastern boundary of the property.

4. Magnetometer Survey

The survey was conducted along a pre-established grid whose 800m base line trends east-west. Cross lines occur at 100m extending south for a maximum length of 800m. A total of 8,800 :m therefore, was covered by the survey.

A model G-816 Geometric Proton Magnetometer was used for the survey. The instrument measures variations in magnetic intensity to an accuracy of +I- 1 gamma. Corrections (when required) for diurnal shift were made by completing a series of 2 hour loops from an established base station in a magnetically "flat" area. Readings were taken at 12.5m intervals and plotted on the accompanying maps.

With the exception of some cultural anomalies (a culvert on line O and railway tracks on line 8) the most prominent magnetic feature is a magnetic ridge, which enters the eastern side of the property on line O in the vicinity of 400m south, and trends in a northwesterly direction to the northwestern corner of the claim. The ridge is possibly the magnetic expression of a mafic intrusion.

Page 14: ASSESSMENT WORK RPT CLAIMS 1204374 - 1204372

;/

5. Conclusions and Recommendations

The magnetometer survey outlines a magnetic ridge which crosses the northern section of the property and likely represents a mafic intrusion.

This information may be useful as further geophysical work and additional prospecting is done on the claim.

Respectfully submitted by:

Gerry O'Reillv ^^ ; U \H^ ^June. 1996.
