Assignment 10 Narrative Types

Illustrative Illustrative is the most common and simple forms of Narrative Types. All Illustrative Music Videos are, are when the word or song lyrics that are being said come up on the screen in Visual Form. So key words and maybe even the song title are shown in the video while being said or sung.

In the ‘Fireflies’ video by Owl City when the lead singer is singing he says the song name Fireflies and as he says this the words spell out on a Robot. This is a good example of how the Artist has used an interesting and different way of expressing the song lyrics as it is different to just signing and listening to the words and lyrics normally.

AmplificationAmplification enables the director to become more of a creative force within the making and construction of the music video. Amplification still links closely to the lyrics of the song however it adds more meaning to the song.

DisjunctureThe idea of Disjuncture is that it ignores nearly all the meanings and concepts of the song and instead through different videos and images creates a whole new and different meaning to the song. These videos don’t tend to make a lot of sense and often use abstract imagery. A good example of this is ‘Can’t Stop’ by The Red Hot Chili Peppers:

In the video it is a mix of performance and narrative. The band are seen carrying, sitting and dressing up as weird things and as object that have no relevance or meaning. As you can see above the lead singer is dressed as a tent and the band are just carrying random lights for no reason. So Disjuncture allows Bands and artists to be creative and make a whole new meaning for the song.
