June 13 th-15 th $195
WE STILL HAVE A FEW SPOTS AVAILABLE, JOIN US!
If you're nostalgic for the days of family camping trips, rowboat rentals,
Saturday-night movies and organized hiking excursions, you will LOVE this retreat.
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts. This 14,086 acre park, covering land in Putnam and Dutchess counties, boasts hiking trails, a beautiful beach, picnic areas, and a campground. With its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, the large beach
at Canopus Lake (right near our campsite!) is the jewel of Clarence Fahnestock Memorial Park. In addition to swimming, campers tour the Lake by row boats which are
available for rental by the hour or the day. The scenic campground, formed along the park's natural rock ridges, provides alcoves of privacy and tranquility for campers.
Restroom and shower facilities are centrally located to all tent sites. Movies are shown on Saturday evenings for the enjoyment of all campers.
Clarence Fahnestock State Park is located near public transportation so you can determine how early you
arrive on Friday and when you leave on Sunday. Since the 15th is Father's Day, we'll have a morning
yoga/hiking session and then pack up after breakfast to head back in time for you to see your dads!
Getting there: From Grand Central Terminal, take Metro-North's Hudson Line to the Cold Spring station.

TEACHER TRAINING TEAM: Anne-Margaret Redding designed this program from her unique training, experience and perspective.
Certified as a yoga teacher, personal trainer, and Reiki healer in 2001, she began steeping herself in the study
of the Chakras, life coaching, leadership training, and energy work. In 2003, she created Astoria’s Women
Circle sourcing herself and her community with the nurturing wisdom of the feminine. That same year, while
on tour with her first album, she began the Live Your Passion Tour: a workshop/concert designed to ignite
passion in the hearts of young people while connecting them with their life purpose. After marrying her life
partner in 2007, she and Anthony enrolled in a 2-year seminary resulting in their ordination as Interfaith
Ministers, just days after opening The Giving Tree Yoga Studio. Having just released her second album, Anne-
Margaret continues to nurture her own artistry while teaching, spiritual counseling, touring with Live Your Passion, and creating the programming for The Giving Tree.
Registered with the Yoga Alliance, this certification is excitingly original in its approach. This training
is designed to cultivate teachers who are able to express their unique spirit, strengths, and passions
through yoga. Participants will learn the fundamentals of teaching yoga while journeying through a
personal discovery of their unique style. Rooted in the wisdom of the chakras and the vast insight of
the greatest spiritual masters, this training will provide a palette of several yogic styles, philosophies,
and approaches for teaching students how to connect with their body, mind, and spirit. Participants
will leave complete with a toolbox full of inspiration and practical approaches to creating classes that inspire and
truly make a difference for others.
Summer TT Schedule: M-F from 9am—6pm (with 1 hour for lunch) Some classes and workshops in the evenings and on weekends.

Born and raised in Queens, Lauren has worked in the health and wellness field for over ten years.
Inspired by her yogi cousin Paul, she began practicing yoga in 2006. She fell in love with yoga
(especially inversions) when she found The Giving Tree, where she acquired her 200-hour yoga
training. With certifications in Massage Therapy (NYCH, Syosset), Holistic Nutrition (I.I.N, NYC),
Pilates(Kane School, NYC), and Yoga (Giving Tree), her passion and vast experience bring a unique
dimension to her classes. Lauren believes body awareness, nutrition, and a strong mind-body
connection gives us the ability to connect with our restorative potential. In class, she places strong
emphasis on breathing as a key to energize the body and for mastering the principles of Pilates
and Yoga (concentration, centering, control, precision, fluidity). She loves blending Yoga and Pilates.
Her teaching style is playful and supportive with a strong knowledge of anatomy, and physical
alignment. Vivid imagery and regular feedback inspire students to test their strengths and connect with their bodies.
K i ck in ’ Core V inya s a : F r i day s f r om 12—1 :30pm
Focus on the fundamentals of Vinyasa, move with intention through breath, all the while strengthening your core. This flow-based class emphasizes
building the centers of ambition, drive, power & creativity. Leave energized and ready to take on the world one step (or pose) at a time.
With a love for the stage, Laura Frye made her way to NYC after completing her Master's in Acting
at the University of Houston. Upon arriving, she realized that she also had another love and that was
working with and helping children with their confidence, through movement based fun. She realized
quickly what a rewarding experience it was to work with kids of all ages and she knew she wanted to
pursue more movement based programs for children. After completing her children's yoga certification
with Karma Kids Yoga NYC, she went on to receive her certifications from Radiant Child Yoga, as well
as her Pre and Postnatal Yoga certification. When she isn't doing yoga, Laura is traveling as an
actress, as well as performing locally in NYC.
Laura joins our Family Programming Team for the summer. Toddler Yoga: Saturdays from 9—10am
Toddler Yoga class is a great way to enjoy yoga while bonding with your little one! Through fun and relatable animal
poses, kids learn about their bodies in space and further develop listening/focusing skills. Mommies also
benefit by restoring and strengthening their bodies post child birth. DADDIES WELCOME TOO!
Daniela offers a progressive vinyasa flow that encourages a sense of agency and healing. Her passion
is helping people explore the human condition first hand. Daniela came to yoga to gain more free
range of motion and what she discovered was that alignment and body awareness are essential
elements to being human. Yoga, wellness and movement are ever-evolving forces of empowerment
in her life. Eager to dip deeper into the lineage and mind body relationship, yoga has reinforced that
earnest and rigorous consistency cultivate a strength and balance that is applicable to all areas of life.
Midday Mot i v a t i on : Monday s f r om 12—1 :30pm
Join Daniela for this uplifting and playful vinyasa class that will leave you motivated to take on the world and create a magnificent day!

She fell in love with yoga 20 years ago and is thrilled to have received her 200-hour certification through The Giving Tree Yoga Studio. Sandra also holds a Prenatal certification from Karma Kids's Pre/Post Natal Expert Juliana Secches as well as a Kids Yoga certification. Originally from Colombia, Sandra is the proud mother of a bilingual toddler and is also expecting her second child this fall. She hopes to offer what she has learned to the
international community, especially those looking to do some yoga en Español. Sandra is incredibly thankful to her family for their support throughout her journey as a yoga teacher and for the wonderful yogis she has met here at The Giving Tree.

However, she soon realized the mental, spiritual, and physical benefits that a consistent yoga practice provided were something worth exploring further. After graduating with a BFA in Modern Dance Performance from the University of South Florida, Rosie received her 200-hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training at Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina under the direction of Stephanie Keach. As a dance artist, Vinyasa Flow is where she experiences a freedom essential to her yoga practice. However, she has also studied Ashtanga, Bikram, Forrest, Jivamukti, Iyengar, and Yin Yoga, and incorporates components of each into her own Vinyasa sequences in order to build mental and physical stamina. She aims to provide her students with the tools necessary to carry their yoga practice off the mat, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, honesty, and mindfulness in order to find peace. BLISSFUL CABIN RETREAT in the Catskills! This undertaking merges BB’s passion for designing unique and functional personal spaces for young individuals with disabilities with their commitment to nurturing a meaningful community, and organizing joyful opportunities that nourish the members’
minds, bodies, hearts and souls. The cabin will serve our community in the following ways: 1) As a hub for regular camping trips and retreats for groups of young individuals with disabilities.
2) As a respite for young individuals with disabilities, and their families, to escape the challenges of inner
city life, and enjoy the country air and healthy living so they can recharge their spirits.
BB envisions the Blissful Cabin as being the first step to a multi-cabin retreat and wellness center – Blissful Village, and a camp for young individuals with disabilities in the coming years, and we hope you will join hands with us
to set out on this exciting journey.

BOOK OF THE MONTH:
Ce l e b ra t i on s : Rituals of Peace and Prayer
by Maya Ange l ou Grace, dignity, and eloquence have long been hall-marks of Maya Angelou’s poetry. Her measured verses have stirred our souls, energized our minds, and healed our hearts. Whether offering hope in the darkest of nights or expressing sincere joy at the extraordinariness of the everyday, Maya Angelou has served as our common voice. Celebrations is a collection of timely and timeless poems that are an integral part of the global fabric. Several works have become nearly as iconic as Ange-lou herself: the inspiring “On the Pulse of Morning,” read at President William Jefferson Clinton’s 1993 inauguration; the heartening “Amazing Peace,” presented at the 2005 lighting of the National Christmas Tree at the White House; “A Brave and Startling Truth,” which marked the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations; and “Mother,” which beautifully honors the first woman in our lives. Angelou writes of celebrations public and private, a bar mitzvah wish to her nephew, a birthday greeting to Oprah Winfrey, and a memorial tribute to the late Luther Vandross and Barry

Quote of the Month: “It is not our differences that
divide us. It is our inability
to recognize, accept, and
celebrate those differences.”
- Audre Lorde
NYC born activist, poet, Audre Lorde wrote
about her experience of not fitting in societal
boxes and always feeling like the outsider. De-
spite feelings of alienation, she recognized the
importance of community as a place where we
find our tribe, our sense of belonging, and ulti-
mately 'our liberation'. In this most culturally
diverse neighborhood in the world, we as Asto-
rians encounter this privilege of diversity every
day. This month, go beyond the cultural diversi-
ty and start by celebrating the differences that
make you uniquely you! When we love those
parts of us that make us different, we can then
celebrate the differences in others rather than
resist them. So many times we miss out on the
beauty and value each person has to offer be-
cause we are too busy judging or dismissing
them. Instead of fighting others' opinions, ap-
pearance, or behavior, we can open our hearts,
try out a new perspective, and possibly even
learn something new! Celebrate yourself and
others this month, feel your heart opening, and
witness the divine miracle that lives in each
person on the planet. Happy Summer!

Since we opened our doors 3 years ago, our efforts in building community have provided a place of inclusivity in Astoria. The Giving Tree is expanding this intention becoming a center of global awareness and community activism providing leadership, vision and opportunities for action. Astoria is the most culturally diverse neighborhood in the world and therefore a
microcosm of our global community. Too often, we see things going on in our world (genocide, devastation, corruption in government) and feel powerless. Sometimes all we can think about is balancing making a living and/or pursuing a dream. These injustices fade into
the background and we can't conceive of where to start, many times feeling alone in our plight with little energy left to give. Fighting each other, claiming 'sides' through political
parties, and being manipulated by our TVs and corrupt, governmental institutions is a thing of the past. Power is moving back in the hands of the people if we work together. Come hear from local leaders, watch clips from informative documentaries and discuss. If you feel called
to make a difference or have ideas for these efforts, please attend!

Since it ’s beginning in January 2003, almost
500 women from Astoria have participated
in this ancient tradition. The aim of this
circle is to guide women to connect with
the incredible power that lies within each
and every one of us. We will focus on
opening ourselves up to the healing power of
feminine energy with the use of meditation,
yoga, music, and group discussion.
If you can ’t make the meetings, you are still
welcome to join in the group activities on our
Facebook page and share in the experience!
Email [email protected] to be added to the FB group.

THROAT CHAKRA CONNECT ION (connected to Mercury): This chakra correlates with the function of our communication, expressing ourselves, and speaking our truth. We must have the Root (grounded), Second (emotions), Solar Plexus (power) and Heart (love) Chakras all in order to live from the highest expression of our self. If the most influential people throughout history never expressed their ideas, our world
would be a very different place. Remember that each person has something unique to contribute. The Sanskrit name for the throat chakra is Vishuddha which means 'purification'. Crying is a form of purification that can remove blockages. A blockage in this chakra will feel like a welling or lump in the throat. THROAT MEDITAT ION Sit in Easy pose with the hands in gyan mudra (index touching the thumbs). Straighten the spine, drop the shoulders and tuck the chin in slightly to create neck lock. Chant “Humee Hum Brahm Hum” without using the tip of the tongue at all. Use only the root of the tongue to chant. Chant for 11 minutes. This will stimulate the throat and will cause your tongue to get a workout.
Th i s month f o cu s on : -solving problems, listening for answers
-speaking your mind confidently -listening and learning from others -accepting the paradox inherent in
our traits and life stories -collecting and exchanging knowledge
-talking with people from all walks of life

This New Moon in Gemini offers a new beginning in the realm of communication. Listen carefully to what people say and to what you need to know to succeed. However, be mindful that with
Neptune squaring the new Moon, not everything you hear will be accurate. Situations may arise during this new moon that test your energy al-
lowing you to see where you need to establish healthier boundaries or how you've been
sabotaging your success. It may be time to change your attitude, learn how to say 'no',
or simply make new declarations of intention for your life. Gemini symbolizes the outer nature of Mercury: accumulation of infor-mation, social interaction with diversity.
This month, look at what isn't working in your life. No action needs to be taken at this time. Instead, meditate on this awareness by listening to your thoughts and feelings. If feelings of anger
or frustration arise, feel them and surrender the need to act on them. On June 12th, the full moon in Sagittarius occurs and will provide keen insights and solutions to questions you have been asking.
Pose of the Month: Cobra Pose-Bhujangasana This backbend is a great pose for
reversing the effects of the slouching shoulders and compressed chest that
comes from engaging in writing, surfing the internet, catching up with friends
online. (Gemini activities) Place your hands down just in front of your shoulders. Drawing your
shoulders back, guide the heart forward and straighten your arms only so much that your hips remain on the floor. Keep the elbows soft,
abdominals engaged, and the back of your neck free of compression.

NEW MOON IN GEMIN I The evolutionary intention for the Gemini is a journey of discovering how and what the soul desires to learn. Symbolizing the left-brain, or logical mind, this energy represents the greatest potential to find clarity around one's existence, but possesses the trap of getting lost in illusion. The overall
intention is to develop one's connection to intuitive perceptions through the journey of conversation with others.
