Chris HadfieldAstronaut | Former Commander of the International Space Station
“Good morning, Earth!” That is how Colonel Chris Hadfield – writing on Twitter – woke up the world every day while
living for five months aboard the International Space Station. Through his 21-years as an astronaut and three spaceflights, Col-onel Hadfield has become a worldwide sensation, harnessing the power of social media to make outer space accessible to millions and infusing a sense of wonder into our collective consciousness not felt since humans first walked on the moon. Called “the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong,” Colonel Hadfield continues to bring the marvels of science and space travel to everyone he encounters.
Colonel Hadfield is a pioneer of many historic “firsts”. In 1992, he was selected by the Canadian Space Agency as a NASA Mission Specialist – Canada’s first fully-qualified Space Shuttle crew member. Three years later, aboard Shuttle Atlantis, he was the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in space, and the first Canadian to board a Russian spacecraft as he helped build space station “Mir.” In 2001, aboard Shuttle Endeavour, Colonel Hadfield performed two spacewalks – the first Canadian to do so – and in 2013, he was Commander of the International Space Station – the first and only Canadian to ever command a spaceship.
A heavily decorated astronaut, engineer, and pilot, Colonel Hadfield’s many awards include receiving the Order of Ontario, the Meritorious Service Cross, and the NASA Ex-ceptional Service Medal. He was named the Top Test Pilot in both the US Air Force and the US Navy, and has been inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame.
Colonel Hadfield is the author of the internationally bestselling book An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, and has been commemorated on Canadian postage stamps, Royal Canadian Mint silver and gold coins, and on Canada’s newest five dollar bill (along with fellow astronauts Steve MacLean and Dave Williams). n

O n behalf of Squamish Nation and the Coast Salish people, we would like to congratulate Chris Hadfield on his being awarded the
World Peace Tartan, the University of the Fraser Valley on its 40th Anniversary and Summit Negotia-tions Society on its launch. We wish you lifelong suc-cess and harmony on your endeavours. My late uncle Percy Paull would always share that we as human beings are just like the different species of trees, liv-ing harmoniously in the forest, breathing the same air and growing from the same earth and thriving for many generations. I would like to welcome you to our Coast Salish traditional territory and ask the creator to bless each of you on your journeys through life. O’siem.

Changing the Way the World Negotiates
C ongratulations to Chris Hadfield for capturing our imagination while com-manding the International Space Station in a way that has inspired us to become better stewards of our planet. As inventors and developers of
Smartsettle, the world’s premier eNegotiation system, we resonate with Hadfield’s call for peace on earth. This is also our vision in providing Summit Negotiations Society with a world-wide license to use Smartsettle for non-profit peacemaking purposes, moving people from competition to cooperation in order to help resolve all types of conflicts. We count it a privilege to stand alongside the organizers here in awarding Hadfield with the World Peace Tartan. It is also very fitting that proceeds from this event will contribute towards the launch of Summit Negotiations Society as well as the Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
