Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their first child. I am not so naïve as to believe that all readers are avid monar-chists, however I do know that the vast majority of you support the monarchy at one level or another and that you join me in wishing the family all the best. Hope there are not too many sleepless nights! You do realize of course that because of this we have all moved one step further away from ascending the throne! I hope that everyone is hav-ing a great summer and that either at home or away you are all staying safe and well. If you visit somewhere that you think others should know about why not let us know. Wax poetic in your descrip-tion and we will see you in print in future newsletters. Even if it is somewhere that you went to a while ago but still think we should know about, let us know. As it is summer there is not a lot going on around the Society but there is still enough options where you can get involved. We have seen the reintroduction of drop in nights. July 6

th and

20th saw two small but enthu-

siastic groups having a few drinks, putting the world to rights and playing dominoes.

The next drop in is not until the end of August, the 31

st to be exact, so

why not put it in your calendar right now and come out and have a visit.

What else do we have going on, well August 11

th we will be

lawn bowling at Royal Lawn Bowling Club. If you have never been then you need to try it. Information will be elsewhere in this newsletter. Okay, how about treading the boards and getting involved in the pantomime? Auditions are on August 18

th and again

there should be information elsewhere in this newsletter. Tom Hill, our Culture Director, can be contacted, he will pass your name on. If you would still like to tread the boards howev-

er you feel that you cannot put in the time that the pantomime would take then we also have a Comedy Dessert Night in Octo-ber. We are looking for people to help out on and off stage. For more information please give me a call. Anyway, enough from me now you can find and read the interesting bits! Have a great rest of sum-mer.

Many thanks to you all for the cards, letters, e-mails, gifts and messages left on the phone dur-ing the last few weeks. I really do appreciate all the kind words and advice I was given after the death of John. I was not too good on taking phone calls to be honest, but thank you if you left a message on my answering machine. I only now truly understand

how friends and members feel when they lose a partner or spouse. It is a really excruciat-ingly sad time in one's life. I now understand what a lot of pain our members have been through. Until you personally live through the death of a spouse / partner or a very close family member you can never fully understand how it affects people, and I feel somewhat re-morseful that I never truly un-derstood how it must have been for our members in their time of real sorrow and grief. I hope in the future I will be

more understanding and sup-portive to people who are griev-ing for a much loved family member. Thank you again for your support, and words of apprecia-tion (that you sent) for the work John did through the years for the St George Society. My children and older grand-children also appreciated all the thoughts our members ex-pressed about their father and grandfather.

Ann Hender.

A Thank You Letter By Ann Hender

I have been researching both my family tree and John’s family tree for a number of years. I want to know if there are any other club members interested

in their genealogy and how to go about doing their own research. If there are sufficient members of the club interested in finding out whether they have some in-teresting ancestors or even some skeletons in their family closet please contact me by e-mail. I am prepared to put on a talk at the club about how to go

about this research and give you some advice about the pitfalls, challenges and clues that you should look for. I have access to all the major genealogical sites and can show you how to use them. E-mail: [email protected]

What’s in a Name? Quiz By Debbie Harpin

With the naming of the new Royal baby I thought it would be fun to see if the members knew the birth names of the following celebrities. Answers in the next newsletter.

ININ GOOD HANDS, YOUR HOME WHILST YOU ARE GOOD HANDS, YOUR HOME WHILST YOU ARE

AWAYAWAY

Leaving for business or holidays for a change, a rest, travel to new places or visit with family? Who looks after your home whilst you are away?

You may not be aware, if some unforeseen occurrence should hap-pen and no one has checked your home, that your insurance company may not be willing to cover a claim!

Leaving for a weekend or a week your home needs care and attention whilst you are away.

Our children are either too young or too busy to pop in on Mum & Dad’s house to make sure all is well.

IN GOOD HANDS, YOUR HOME WHILST YOU ARE AWAY is happy to do this for you, giv-ing you peace of mind to enjoy your stay away.

I have just completed my 75th consecu-

tive meeting of the St. George Social Committee, almost all of them as Secre-

tary. (By an interesting coincidence, I will celebrate my 75

th birthday next month.) I

don’t want a medal or a round of ap-plause, but it does suggest that maybe it is time for a change. Some of our Committee have been members for as long as I, and these long-term members are becoming more and more involved in other activities. An ac-tive social programme requires an active Social Committee. I don’t plan to quit im-mediately but neither do I expect to be Secretary for very much longer. So, we badly need new Committee members with new ideas. Why not give it a try? We have a lot of laughs and the work is fulfilling. We only meet about once a month and we usually only organize one or two events each month. If you are interested, please call or e-mail me. Eric Pinnington (780-434-0590 pin-

Time for a Changing of the Guard?

Investigators at a major re-search institute not far from here have discovered the heaviest ele-ment known to science. This star-tling new discovery has been tenta-tively named Administratium (Ad). The new element has no protons or electrons, thus having an atomic number of 0. It does, however, have 1 neutron, 125 assistant neu-trons, 75 vice neutrons, and 111 assistant vice neutrons, for an atomic mass of 312. These 312

particles are held together by a force called morons, which are sur-rounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since it has no electrons, Administratium is inert. Howev-er, it can be detected as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. According to the discoverers, a

minute amount of Administratium

causes one reaction to take over

four days to complete when it

would normally take less than a

second. Administratium has a nor-

mal half-life of approximately three

years; it does not decay, but in-

stead undergoes a reorganization

in which a part of the assistant neu-

trons, vice neutrons and assistant

vice neutrons exchange places. In

fact, an Administratium sample’s

mass will actually increase over

time, since with each reorganiza-

tion some of the morons inevitably

become neutrons, forming new iso-

topes. This characteristic of moron

promotions leads some scientists

to speculate that Administratium is

formed whenever morons reach a

certain concentration. This hypo-

thetical quantity is referred to as

the “Critical Morass”.
