On behalf of the Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico, I welcome you to the 2014Santa Fe Bone Symposium. I am very pleased to have you participate in this wonderfulevent in the lovely historic capital of New Mexico. This is an annual forum for theinformal exchange of scientific, social and economic information on osteoporosis,bone densitometry and metabolic bone disease. It is also an opportunity to enjoy timewith friends, colleagues and world leaders in the field who share your interests. Theatmosphere is casual, the altitude is high and the science is exciting. I look forward tohaving you share your knowledge and experiences with others at this meeting.

While you are here in Santa Fe, please take full advantage of the beautifulsurroundings. Enjoy a drive in the mountains, dine in some of the city’s finerestaurants, and visit the many museums, historical sites, galleries and shops.

John P. Bilezikian, MD, CCDDr. Bilezikian, the Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Pharmacology at the Collegeof Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University, is Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Director of the Metabolic BoneDiseases Program at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Bilezikian received his undergraduate training at HarvardCollege and his medical training at the College of Physicians & Surgeons. He completed four years of house staff training(internship, residency and Chief Residency) on the Medical Service at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Bilezikianreceived his training in Metabolic Bone Diseases and in Endocrinology at NIH in the Mineral Metabolism Branch under thetutelage of Dr. Gerald Aurbach. Dr. Bilezikian belongs to a number of professional societies, including the American Societyfor Bone and Mineral Research, of which he served as President from 1995-1996, and the International Society of ClinicalDensitometry, of which he served as President from 1999-2001. He is a member of the Endocrine Society, the AmericanFederation for Clinical Research, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, theAmerican Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics,the American College of Endocrinology (that has designated him Master) and the Advisory Medical Panel, Paget's DiseaseFoundation (1991-2011). He serves on the Board of Governors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (1998- ) andon its Committee of Scientific Advisors (2001- ). He is Chair of the Endocrine Fellows Foundation. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (2000-2004) and as Senior Associate Editor of the Journal ofBone and Mineral Research (2008-2012). He is Executive Advisory Editor of Bone Research (2013- ). His books includeEditor-in-Chief of The Parathyroids [1994, 2001, 2013 (in preparation)], and co-editor of The Aging Skeleton (1999),Dynamics of Bone and Cartilage Metabolism (1999, 2006), Principles of Bone Biology (1996, 2002, 2008) andOsteoporosis in Men (2010). He has been on numerous panels, including serving as Chair of the NIH ConsensusDevelopment Panel on Optimal Calcium Intake (1994) and Co-chair of the last two NIH Workshops on PrimaryHyperparathyroidism (2002, 2008). He is a national and international spokesperson for the field of metabolic bonediseases. Dr. Bilezikian's major research interests are related to the clinical investigation of metabolic bone diseases,particularly osteoporosis and primary hyperparathyroidism. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Physician Award of theEndocrine Society, the Frederic C. Bartter Award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) forExcellence in Clinical Research, the John P. McGovern Compleat Physician Award of the Houston Academy of Medicine, theFirst Annual Global Leadership Award of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry, and Lifetime AchievementAwards of the Armenian American Medical Society of California and the Armenian American Health ProfessionalsOrganization. In 2009, he received the Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award from the ASBMR. He will bereceiving the Laureate Distinguished Educator Award of The Endocrine Society later in 2014. His publications, whichnumber over 675, speak to his active original investigative initiatives, as well as his authorship of many reference sources ofendocrinology and metabolic bone diseases.

Neil Binkley, MDDr. Binkley earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and subsequently received histraining in Internal Medicine at the Marshfield Clinic. After several years in private practice, he returned to the University ofWisconsin in 1990 and completed a geriatric fellowship. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, and iscurrently a Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. His researchefforts focus on osteoporosis diagnosis, sarcopenia, optimization of fracture risk assessment, vitamin D and nutrition inbone health. Dr. Binkley is Past President of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry and a member of theInternational Osteoporosis Foundation Committee of Scientific Advisors. He is also member of the American GeriatricsSociety, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Gerontological Society of America, International Bone andMineral Society, and Wisconsin Bone Club. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to numeroustextbooks.

Didier Hans, PhD, MBAProfessor Hans, PhD, MBA, is the Head of Research and Development in the Bone and Joint Department at the Center ofBone Disease at Lausanne University Hospital. In this role, he is involved in a range of clinical, research and teachingactivities. Pr. Hans has over 25 years of experience working in the musculoskeletal field, with particular emphasis on DXA,microarchitecture and ultrasound imaging techniques. As a medical expert with radiology expertise, Pr. Hans has served asa co-investigator for several clinical trials involving imaging for some of the world’s top pharmaceutical companies, as wellas in scientific advisory board of diagnostic companies.

Pr. Hans teaches courses in DXA, bone microarchitecture techniques, ultrasound, body composition and osteoporosis, andlectures around the world. In addition, he is a certified full clinician faculty and full technologist faculty for the InternationalSociety of Clinical Densitometry Bone Densitometry course. Pr. Hans served as the first non-North American InternationalSociety of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) President and remained an active member of the ISCD Board of Directors, as well asa member of the scientific advisory committee of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). He has authored morethan 180 articles, over 20 book chapters, and serves as a reviewer and/or member of the editorial board for10international scientific journals, including Osteoporosis International, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Journal ofClinical Densitometry, Osteoporosis International and Bone. As a musculoskeletal expert, Pr. Hans has been invited topresent at over 350 conferences and events on topics including osteoporosis, bone quality and bone fractures, among othersubjects.

Pr. Hans was the recipient of the Dr. John P. Bilezikian ISCD Global Leadership Award (2013) as well as the ISCD clinician ofthe year award (2006) for distinguished services to the field of bone densitometry. Pr. Hans has been actively involved withthe reconciliation between ISCD and IOF, which led to a strategic alliance for the common osteoporosis courses worldwide.

Prior to his current position, Pr. Hans was, for 10 years, the Head of R&D in the Radiology Department, bone and bodycomposition laboratory at University of Geneva, Switzerland. Previously, he was the Director of the Quality AssuranceCenter for Clinical Research and the Associate Director of R&D for the ultrasound unit at the Osteoporosis and ArthritisResearch Group (OARG) at UCSF, San Francisco, USA (directed by Prof. Harry K. Genant). At an earlier stage, he was theDirector of both Bone Densitometry, and New Technologies Department and Quality Assurance Center at the Centred’Epidémiologie des Ostéoporoses in Lyon, France (directed by Profs Pierre J. Meunier and Pierre D. Delmas). Pr. Hans earned a PhD in Human Biology and Medical Physics with honors from Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France.He also earned his Masters of Science degree with honors in the area of Acoustic, Signal and Image Processing andUltrasound from Claude Bernard University. He recently completed his expertise with a Master of Business Administration inEntrepreneurship from HEC in Geneva, Switzerland.

Diane Krueger, BS, CBDT, CCRCDiane Krueger received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a certified ClinicalBone Densitometrist and Clinical Research Coordinator. She has been Program Manager of the University of WisconsinOsteoporosis Clinical Research Program since its inception in 1993. Her research experience and peer-reviewedpublications are related to osteoporosis, nutrition and bone densitometry. Additionally, she participates in educationalactivities affiliated with the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the International Society for ClinicalDensitometry (ISCD). She is currently President of the ISCD.

E. Michael Lewiecki, MD, CCDE. Michael Lewiecki, MD, is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, andDirector of the New Mexico Clinical Research & Osteoporosis Center. His is a consultant in osteoporosis and metabolicbone disease, Supervisor and Interpreter of Bone Density Studies at his center, and an educator with a special interest in themanagement of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. He is a principal investigator for the Center’s osteoporosisclinical trials and the author of many peer-reviewed scientific publications on osteoporosis and bone densitometry.

Paul D. Miller, MDPaul D. Miller, MD, is Distinguished Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver,Colorado. In addition, Dr. Miller is the Medical Director of the Colorado Center for Bone Research in Lakewood, Colorado.After Dr. Miller received his medical degree with distinction from The George Washington University School of Medicine inWashington, DC, he became an intern in medicine and Chief Medical Resident at the University of Rochester School ofMedicine in New York. Subsequently, he completed a clinical fellowship and research fellowship in the Division of RenalDiseases at the University of Colorado Medical School.

Treatment of metabolic bone disease has been the primary focus of Dr. Miller’s research. Dr. Miller has authored or co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. Dr. Miller is Emeritus Editor of the Journal ofClinical Densitometry.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Miller is a member of numerous professional organizations. He was afounder of the Metabolic Bone Disease Society of Colorado in 1980, and also the Founding President of the InternationalSociety for Clinical Densitometry. Dr. Miller has served on The National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Interspecialty Council(NOF), the Professional Practice and Publications Committees of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research(ASBMR), the Board of Directors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), the Committee of Scientific Advisors ofthe IOF and the National Bone Health Alliance scientific committee to enhance research and education.

Dr. Miller has received numerous awards for his professional contributions including an Honorary Doctorate of Science fromGettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA; Distinguished Alumni Award from The George Washington University School ofMedicine, The Lasker Award from The Colorado Chapter of The American College of Physicians, Outstanding Teacher,Publication(s) and Researcher of The Year Awards from the University of Colorado Medical School, and The OutstandingVolunteer Faculty Award from Denver Health and Hospitals. Most recently, Dr. Miller was awarded the Career AchievementAward (2005) and The Distinguished Clinical Professor promotion (2006) by the Department of Medicine of the Universityof Colorado Medical School and the 2014 President’s Award of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

Mary Oates, MDDr. Mary K. Oates is a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist. She has been specializing in thediagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis since 1994 and is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist. She is the Medical Directorfor Research for The Pacific Central Coast Health Centers. She founded the Marian and French Hospital OsteoporosisCenters and is a volunteer faculty member at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Her clinic practice inSanta Maria, California also focuses on the evaluation of nerve and muscle disorders with EMG and nerve conductionstudies. She is actively involved with community education and outreach projects aimed at the prevention and treatment ofosteoporosis. She has participated in several osteoporosis pharmaceutical research studies, and observational BodyComposition studies using DXA for the evaluation of bone, muscle and fat. Dr. Oates is a graduate of Ohio State UniversityCollege of Medicine and The University of California, Irvine residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Elizabeth Shane, MDElizabeth Shane, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair of Medicine for Clinical and Epidemiological Research atColumbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City. She received her MD from the University ofToronto, and completed her medical residency and training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the College of Physiciansand Surgeons and the Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Her research interests include transplantation osteoporosis,premenopausal osteoporosis, bone disease associated with HIV/AIDS, renal bone disease and bone loss due tomedications, and gastrointestinal diseases. Dr. Shane was Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology andMetabolism (2000-2004), Associate Editor of the first-through-sixth editions of the Primer of the Metabolic Bone Diseasesand Disorders of Mineral Metabolism, and is currently Associate Editor of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (2013-2018). Dr. Shane is Past President of the American Association for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), and served on theBoard of Directors of FASEB from 2007-2011. She chaired or co-chaired ASBMR Task Forces on Ethics in Publishing in2005, Osteonecrosis of the Jaw in 2006-7, and Atypical Femur Fractures in 2009-10, and again in 2012-13. She serves onthe Advisory Council for the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). She was awarded the2013 Frederic C. Bartter Award by the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research for outstanding contributions toclinical investigation in diseases of bone and mineral metabolism.

EXHIBITORSThe following organizations are supporting the Santa Fe Bone Symposium through their involvement with

exhibitions. Please take some time to visit the exhibits before and after the scientific presentations.

In accordance with the precedent established at the first Santa Fe BoneSymposium, the wearing of neckties during the scientific presentations ishighly discouraged (“No-Tie Rule”). Appropriate action will be taken for allinfractions of this rule. See below for the only exception to this rule.

For social activities, ties are optional and generally not necessary in Santa Fe. If you plan on attending the opera, be prepared for cool weatherand possible rain. Typical dress for the opera ranges from a tuxedo andevening gown, to jeans and t-shirt with turquoise jewelry. Black capes andother outrageous costume accessories are commonly seen.

Special Exception to the “No-Tie Rule” With aging and the onset of institutional lethargy, the symposium organizers havecome to realize that there are some individuals (very few, thank goodness) who donot feel comfortable without wearing a tie. Therefore, a tie may be worn, providedit meets certain specifications. If a tie can reasonably be called a “BONE TIE,” it willnot be forcibly removed from the owner. For those who wish to wear a bone tie butdo not have one, Santa Fe Bone Symposium neckties (and scarves) will be sold onthe premises and are also available online at www.osteoporosisfoundation.org.This is an extraordinarily attractive tie, designed under the supervision of Dr. MikeLewiecki and Dr. David Dempster, with a red chili spine theme and the runninglogo of the Santa Fe Bone Symposium. Do not leave Santa Fe without one.Proceeds from all sales are used to support osteoporosis educational activities andmay help to offset your registration fee for future symposia.
