Underpinned by a tiny mintage, offi cial legal tender status and a stunning ‘raised’ full-colour design, this eye-catching Silver Proof celebrates the 60th anniversary of the

discovery of precious oil in Australia – at the Rough Range-1 site in WA in 1953.

As with other elements of Australia’s abundant natural wealth, the discovery of oil changed the nation forever. Sparking jubilation across the country, the discovery of

‘black gold’ enhanced Australia’s national independence, boosted the economy and inspired a wave of investment in the search for natural resources. An offi cial

legal tender issue, the 2013 $1 Oil Discovery Silver Proof forms a fi ne tribute to this major landmark in our history – and a collector acquisition of the utmost quality.

A must-have for anyone enchanted with full-colour coinage, this fl awless 25g sterling silver Proof is perhaps most notable for the spellbinding design. Standing out prominently from the imposing 40mm fl an, the fully embossed depiction of the oil appears to be erupting from the actual coin! The golden Outback sunset, highlighted by a portrayal of our primary native icon,

provides a glowing contrast.

Instantly acclaimed worldwide, with

critics gushing in praise of its originality and

A stunning opportunity to experience the timeless beauty of Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George & the Dragon design upon a large, crown-sized fl an, the Royal Mint has shocked the collector world with the launch of the 2013 £5 St George & the Dragon Royal Baby Silver Proof!

Whilst this is an offi cial tribute to the birth of the fi rst child of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge – the fi rst time the Royal Mint has commemorated a Royal birth – there is no question

that demand for this stunning Silver Proof will be driven by the employment of the classically inspired St George motif. Created

in 1817 for the fi rst issue of the modern sovereign series, Pistrucci’s masterwork was last found upon a silver coin in 1902, when a

5/- Crown was issued to honour the Coronation of King Edward VII.

Appropriately enough, the birth of the future heir to the British throne – and the great-great-great-great grandchild of Edward VII – has inspired the Royal Mint

to revive the traditional St George & the Dragon Silver Crown. Struck to immaculate Proof quality from 28.28g of sterling silver, and spanning 38.61mm in diameter – just like its 1902 predecessor – the expansive nature of this offi cial British legal tender coin provides the perfect venue to enable the full enjoyment of this legendary piece of numismatic artistry.

Taken from an astoundingly small mintage of just 10,000, we have been granted a tiny allocation of coins as the Mint’s sole offi cial Australian distributor – each housed within an offi cial case with a Certifi cate of Authenticity.

Offi cial Royal Baby Tribute!

A fi ne tribute to the proud Dad, and a highly sought after Australian legal tender full-colour coin, this handsome .999 fi ne Silver Proof celebrates the 21st birthday of Prince William in 2003.

A typically impressive work of precious metal minting on the part of the Perth Mint, this exclusive type – mintage 12,500 – proved a smash hit in 2003. The mintage was simply devastated by demand, and with the 40mm diameter coin disappearing from the market, the secondary market price soared. Issued at A$75, this coin now has a market value of over A$200!

A limited window of opportunity, we have only a few examples in stock – each set within an offi cial Perth Mint case united with a numbered Certifi cate of Authenticity.

A wonderful opportunity to explore Australia’s majestic natural environment, this unique Perth Mint collection comprises three offi cial Australian legal tender coins – each paying homage to one of Australia’s internationally renowned World Heritage sites. Struck to the Perth Mint’s highest Proof quality from a troy ounce of .999 fi ne silver, and measuring an expansive crown-sized 40.60mm in diameter, each coin features an eye-catching full-colour appreciation of either Fraser Island, the Lord Howe Island Group or Kakadu National Park. Contrasting superbly with the vivid full-colour motif, each coin is also highlighted by a fully struck-up depiction of an Australian native creature.

Not available at the Perth Mint – but available at Downies! – each of the three exquisitely struck precious metal Proofs is presented within an offi cial Perth Mint case, united with an offi cial Certifi cate of Authenticity. Individually serial-numbered, that Certifi cate confi rms the extremely exclusive nature of each unique .999 fi ne Silver Proof. Surprisingly, the mintage has been restricted to a tiny 2,500!

How a penniless penal colony was transformed into an orderly society with a stable currency is one of the most intriguing chapters in Australian history. The foundation stone of Australian numismatics, the Proclamation of 1800 played a major role in sparking this transformation.

Life was hard in Britain’s isolated southern possession. The harsh, unfamiliar landscape yielded little for the newcomers, and disease was rampant throughout the tiny population of 5,000. Surviving under these circumstances was an achievement, but for those who did, there was another diffi culty to be faced – the lack of an offi cial system of currency.

Economic chaos was the result. Rum was the dominant measure of value, with coins from overseas supplementing a system of barter. Foreign coins were few in number, and as they originated from different currency systems, it was impossible to determine relative values. The arrival of some four tonnes of Britain’s 1797 Cartwheel Penny brought matters to a head, providing the spark for Governor Philip Gidley King’s Proclamation of 1800 – Australia’s fi rst offi cial currency system.

Assigning fi xed values to the diversity of coins circulating at the time, King hoped to engender the confi dence and certainty necessary for

The foundation stone of

History in the making…

Australia’s fi rst offi cial coin

Australia’s biggest coin! The fi rst coin offi cially exported to the colony and therefore Australia’s fi rst offi cial coin, the imposing 36mm 1797 Cartwheel Penny was the trigger for the Currency Proclamation of 1800.

The fi rst British copper penny type and the fi rst produced with steam power, 18,000 examples of Britain’s 1797 Cartwheel Penny arrived in New South Wales in 1800. This massive infl ux of currency gave Governor King the opportunity to regulate the chaotic monetary system, and the Cartwheel Penny was offi cially listed in the Proclamation of 1800 at double face value.

A key element of every Australian coin collection, we have this copper icon in Very Good.

Weighing nearly two troy ounces, and measuring 41mm, the massive copper 1797 Cartwheel Twopence is an imposing reminder of Australia’s earliest colonial days.

Circulating at double face value at the time of the Proclamation, the Cartwheel 2d, and the Cartwheel 1d at left, were struck at the Soho Mint by Matthew Boulton, a leading industrialist of the age. Britain’s largest, heaviest coin, and also the fi rst British 2d to feature Britannia, the Cartwheel 2d represents supreme value for such a big piece of early Australia. Graded Fine to Very Fine.

a stable economy, as well as discourage visiting traders from draining the colony of coinage. Although only partly successful in the pursuit of these objectives, King’s Proclamation of 1800 was a turning point in Australian history, and the trigger for the study of numismatics in this country.

THE COINS OF THE PROCLAMATION ERA Scarce silver...

History within your reach! Notwithstanding the lack of British silver coinage in the 18th century due to turmoil in Europe, the 1787 Shilling and Sixpence both made it to Australian shores, circulating in the 1790s and early 1800s.

Struck in the year that the First Fleet set sail from England, the 1787 Shilling and Sixpence are not only of undoubted historical signifi cance – they are truly beautiful coins. Much admired for George III portrait and the armorial magnifi cence of the reverse, these historic coins are available in Very Fine.

Genuine coins of the Australian Proclamation Era, playing a crucial role in facilitating daily transactions during the early colonial period, we have both dates of the fi nal George III halfpenny type in stock.

Bringing this formative period of Australian history within your reach, the last George III halfpenny type was issued for a mere two years – in 1806 and 1807. Among the briefest Australian coin types, the 1985-91 1c & 2c Maklouf Portrait Series represents the grand fi nale of copper coinage in Australia.

Copper coins circulated in Australia for nearly 200 years until, overwhelmed by infl ation, Australia’s lowest decimal denominations were axed in the 1990s. Struck from 1985 to 1991, Australia’s last 1c and 2c types both carried the Raphael Maklouf portrait of Elizabeth II.

Whilst headlined by an array of ‘not-issued-for-circulation’ low-mintage types, this comprehensive set is just as crucial for the presence of every standard 1985-98 5c and 10c. Why? Because, as with every set on these pages, the Maklouf Portrait 5c & 10c Series is defi ned by the lowest mintages of the decimal period.

Struck in signifi cantly fewer numbers than the 1966-84 Machin and 1999-2013 Rank-Broadley Series, the scarcity

GB EDWARD I & II (1272-1327)

SILVER PENNY FAIR-FINE

CORRINGHAM HOARD

AU213

A fantastic opportunity for Downies, we have in stock King Edward I

(1272-1307) and King Edward II (1307-27) Silver Pennies from

the Corringham Hoard – a medieval treasure trove of 519 English

hammered silver coins discovered in the south of England in 2009.

Trusted to the Essex soil no later than 1380, this massive hoard of 13th

and 14th century English silver coinage naturally included a large number

of the key denomination of the time, the silver penny. Intriguingly, many

of the silver pennies found at Corringham had been struck a long time

before the hoarder determined to create his secret subterranean ’bank’,

including pennies from the reigns of Edward I and Edward II.

A landmark fi nd for hammered silver coin collectors, the Corringham

Hoard offers you the chance to hold 600+ year old English medieval

history in your hands – at a price everyone

can afford! Desirable for the established

‘hoard provenance’ alone, the opportunity

to secure a silver penny of either Edward I

or Edward II (our choice of monarch) at less

than A$70 apiece should be grasped with

both hands.

7)

A unique link with one of the most tumultuous periods of British history,

we also have in stock Silver Half Groats of King Edward III (1227-77).

One of England’s greatest medieval warrior kings, and one of only fi ve English/

British monarchs to hold power for over half a century, Edward III ruled from 1327

to 1377. One of the longest recorded reigns in English/British history, Edward’s

time on the throne was defi ned by the start of what would become known as the

Hundred Years War, the Black Death (1348-50), the development of Parliament

and the formal change of the national language from French to English!

Worth twopence, these handstruck Silver Half Groats were issued during the

latter part of the king’s reign, with the denomination re-introduced following

the great coinage reform of 1351. Bearing the Longcross design on the

reverse, the obverse features a fi ne facing portrait of the King, surrounded by a

tressure of arches.

A wonderful opportunity to own a genuine

hammered silver coin from Edward’s time in

power, we have just a small number of Silver Half

Groats available – all graded Fine to Very Fine.

An incredibly affordable opportunity to travel back in time to 9th century England, we have a small number of genuine 1,100+ year old Stycas from the brief reign of Anglo-Saxon King of Northumbria, Aethelred II.A turbulent period of British history, following the collapse of the Roman Empire in Britain, and preceding the rule of the Vikings, Anglo-Saxon Britain was divided between many kingdoms – including that of Northumbria. An important coin in 9th century Britain, the Styca was a robust lower denomination, and seems to have been used to great effect in facilitating daily transactions.

A signifi cant historical artefact from early Britain, and a type rarely offered in Australia, we have a handful of Aethelred II Northumbrian Stycas in strong Very Fine condition. A must-have for any British coinage enthusiast, the remarkably low price of just A$195 is sure to provoke great interest from a broad cross-section of the collector community.

THE COINS OF THE ANGLO-SAXONS!

Rare James I gold! Choice Red BU quality! The successor to Elizabeth I, and the predecessor of the ill-fated Charles I, the gold coinage of the fi rst King of the House of Stuart, James I (1603-25), is seldom offered in Australia – and especially not in the stunning quality seen here! A fi rst-time offer for Downies, distinguished by a strong portrait of this famous monarch, this exceptionally pretty 20mm, 22-carat gold Quarter Laurel is graded at Extremely Fine. Very rare in this state of preservation, we have only one example of this lovely coin available.

A unique, extremely low-mintage type, with a mere 288,000 coins struck, this one-year-only, 100-year-old One-Third Farthing of George V is most notable for the astonishing quality. Struck for use in Malta, and the very last One-Third Farthing issued by Great Britain, the few impeccable examples of this 15mm coin we have in stock are as good as the day they left the Royal Mint in London. Incredible value-for-money at just A$95, each coin is in stunning Choice Red Brilliant Uncirculated condition!

For pure quality, these are undoubtedly the best early Australian stamps we have handled – as you can see from the stunning images found on these pages!

As with all of the stamps in this special three-page presentation, each of the 1913 Kangaroo & Map stamps was secured from the famed

in superb MUH! small number of examples of each 100-year-old stamp available in rarely seen Mint Unhinged condition, you will have to act with speed to play a part in this landmark event for Australian collecting.

Issued in the year that the Anzacs stormed Gallipoli, the 1915 Kangaroo 2d Grey stamps are scarce to rare – especially in Mint Unhinged condition as here.

Indicative of the chaotic nature of early Australian stamp production, the 1st Watermark paper used for the original 2d Grey was replaced in 1915 by 2nd Watermark paper. Proving problematic in the printing process, the 2nd Watermark paper was quickly replaced by 3rd Watermark paper, leaving the former as the rarest Kangaroo stamp watermark type. Thanks to the Stuart Hardy Collection, we can now present BOTH types in strictly Mint Unhinged!

Featuring an inverted watermark, caused by feeding the paper into the press the wrong way around, this extremely scarce stamp forms an

affordable opportunity to secure a Kangaroo Error variety.

As with the Green 1/2d above, the 3d Olive is also known for the Inverted Watermark variety – exceedingly rare in the sensational MUH condition available here.

The conclusion of Australia’s long-running Kangaroo & Map Stamp Series, the 1945 2/- Maroon was the very last issue of Australia’s very fi rst stamp type.

An affordable opportunity to secure this philatelic icon, we have the 1945 2/- Maroon available in Imprint Blocks of 8. Bearing the printers name on the selvedge, this key type is very scarce in Block of 8 format, with most saved as Imprint Blocks of 4. Originally mounted on display sheets, with seven stamps in superb MUH and one in Mint Lightly Hinged, we have seldom been able to offer this crucial stamp in such an outstanding state of preservation.

Issued during the Great Depression, and mainly used for parcels, the 1932 6d Brown is scarce – especially in MUH Blocks of 4! A key type, the 1932 6d Brown was printed on ‘CofA’ Watermark paper – the fi rst time this watermark

had been used on a Kangaroo & Map stamp, and the last watermark employed for the 1913-45 Kangaroo Series!

As innovative, as fascinating, and as distinctively Australian as its predecessor, the RAM’s spectacular new 2013 $5 Southern Skies Curved Pavo 1oz Silver Proof is proving to be just as popular. No one should be surprised.

Utilising concave/convex minting technology that is employed by very few issuing authorities across the globe, the RAM has created a truly memorable, utterly unique Australian legal tender coin – and a dramatic tribute to Pavo. A constellation steeped in Greco/Roman

mythology, known as ‘the Peacock’, the shining stars of Pavo contrast beautifully with the full-colour appreciation of the Southern Skies.

Considering the originality of the concept, the demand for the 2012 issue and the stunning quality of this particular full-colour Australian legal tender

coin, immediate action is recommended. Certain to be targeted by those who were quick enough to secure last year’s coin, the mintage of 10,000 is unlikely

to sate demand.
