BARBARESCO AN INTRO TO ARALDICA, LA GANGHIJA, and PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO,

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BAROLO and BARBARESCO, A WALKTHROUGH OF DIFFERENT CRUS,

and MORE

BABARESCO is one of Italy's top appellations for Nebbiolo wines, and deservedly so. This cousin to Barolo is often overlooked, but the range and diversity of Barbarescos make it an equal competitor to Barolo in every way. Like Barolo, Barbaresco wines come from the Southern part of Piedmont. The Barbaresco region is found just across the Tanaro river to the northwest and is comprised of various vineyards, or "crus," all of which have distinct personalities that influence the wines they put forth. Compared to Barolo, Barbarescos tend to be ever-so-slightly less tannic and softer, due to the area's fertile limestone-based soils. The Tanaro river is a larger influence here (particularly in nearby crus like Pora) than it is in Barolo. Common tasting notes include bright red fruit like strawberry and raspberry, on top of floral-rose, dried herb, tea, or anise notes. Barbaresco's DOC requirements state that wines must age 26 months before release, with at least 9 months in barrel, and Riserva level wines must age 50 months, with at least 24

months in barrel.

ARALDICAAraldica produces excellent Piedmont wines from the most prestigious winegrowing areas of Monferrato, Gavi Langhe, and Roero. Founded in 1954 at Castel Boglione, a small village lying between Asti and Acqui Terme, today Araldica Wines is a cooperative society of 140 associates whose work it coordinates, starting from

vineyard activities.

The valorization of traditional varietals, the selection of the best varieties according to the micro-climate and territorial conditions, care for the environment and the peculiar characteristics of each wine: Araldica is a large cooperative society which, despite the fact that it turns over significant product volumes, has not forgotten the family-based artisanal approach to winegrowing, which it considers to be an essential bedrock for the production of

great labels.

BARBARESCO CORSINI The Araldica Barbaresco Corsini comes from growers in all three designated Barbareco villages: Barbaresco, Treiso, and Neive. After fermentation, the wine is held in large, 50-year-old Slovenian oak casks. Regarding the 2014 (current) vintage, "we got off to a cool and rainy start," says John Leech, commercial director of Araldica. "We effectively didn't have a spring; winter skipped straight to a damp-starting summer. Careful vineyard husbandry, the selective use of green-harvesting, and a warm dry finish to the vintage in September-October, provided the raw materials for an

approachable, slightly more early-drinking vintage, with some nice licorice and fruit-cakey flavors and aromas supported by fine, ripe

powdery tannins."

LA GANGHIJAThe history of this family run wine-growing business stretches back over several generations of the Rapalino family but it was not until quite recently that La Ganghija evolved into its present form, i.e. actually making wine from its own grapes rather than selling them. This idea came to the young oenologist Enzo Rapalino while working in the vineyards and studying at La Scuola Enologica di Alba where he learnt the techniques of winemaking and the importance of having utilizing the right ingredients to create

high quality wines.

La Ganghija, (Piemontese for vine tendril, symbolising something small but powerful), was created in 2004 out of Enzo’s passion and love of wine. To him it was the best way to showcase the territory where he grew up: Treiso in Piemonte.

Treiso is a land of great wines and scenic beauty, and an important constituent of the famous Barbaresco DOCG wine area. La Ganghija is still very much a family affair with Enzo's wife Milena and his parents Giovanni and Rita completing the team. They currently farm their vineyards in the communes of Treiso, Magliano

Alfieri and Madonna di Como (Alba).

BARBARESCO BASE La Ganghija's Barbaresco Base is produced with grapes from three different crus: Giacosa, Bricco di Treiso, and Giacone. This mix gives balance to the wine: the Giacosa lends structure and tannins, and the Giacone and Bricco di Treiso areas contribute toward elegance and smooth tannins. The vineyards are all located

within a kilometer of Treiso, the highest village in the Barbaresco area. It is a traditionally-made Barbaresco, which ferments in stainless steel containers with 40-45 days of maceration, followed by a refining period of 24 months in oak barrels. Depending on the vintage, this

wine can age 20-55 years.

Leather, tilled earth, grated clove and black cherry aromas take center stage along with a whiff of fragrant blue flower. The taut, velvety palate doles out raspberry extract, ripe cranberry, tobacco and licorice alongside firm acidity and close-grained tannins that leave a drying finish. BARBARESCO GIACOSA The riserva level Barbaresco Giacosa comes from the oldest of La Ganghija's vineyards, and is located on final part of the hill which begins at Roccalini in the township of Barbaresc, and rises towards Treiso (passing through Roncagliette, Roncaglie, Montaribaldi, Pajorè and Marcarini). The Giacosa cru is western exposed, and boasts Nebbiolo sites of real significance, mostly because the higher altitude leads to cooler weather, which is great for Nebbiolo. In general, the Barbaresco Giacosa is more concentranted and tannic than the neighboring crus of Casot and Marcarini. The vinification of this wine follows traditional rules, with fermentation carried out in oak barrels and the aging process done for 24 months in

oak barrels.

PRODUTTORI DELBARBARESCO

The Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares (250 acres) of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The vinery produces a Barbaresco D.O.C.G., a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe

suited for earlier consumption.

In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked

on the labels.

The Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produce around 550,000 bottles (45,000 cases) per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (50%), single vineyard Barbarescos (30%) and

Nebbiolo Langhe (20%).

BARBARESCO ASILIThis spectacular vineyard has created in the past some of the greatest Barbaresco and it has a strong following all over the world. The main part of the Asili vineyard is a protected bowl facing South/West, next to Pora, but farther away from the river and the valley influence with warmer and less breezy microclimate during most of the summer. To the East, Asili ends with a bricco, top of the hill, also facing South/West and with a similar soil composition, bordering Rabajà. The wine is intense, certainly not a full bodied Barbaresco, but nevertheless showing a very imposing personality. Usually quite closed in its youth, it opens up slowly with impeccable complexity and style… a classic Barbaresco, and also one of the most distinctive vineyards of the region. First produced as a single vineyard in

1967.

BARBARESCO MONTEFICOA not widely known vineyard, yet highly sought after by the Barbaresco aficionados. It is often compared to the slightly larger and more famous Montestefano vineyard because of the similar soil (high calcium) and close proximity between the two. It lays half way between the Montestefano and the Ovello. Exposure is South / South-East, therefore quite warm, but it is not

unusual for Montefico to have brisk morning hours during the growing season because of the cooler northern wind that occasionally funnels in from narrow valley open to the North, between the villages of Barbaresco and Neive. Austere when young and somehow less fleshy than Montestefano, it shows a beautiful mineral finish. It produces wines with the breed of any classic Barbaresco and with incredible complexity behind the tannins.a bricco, top of the hill, also facing South/West and with a similar soil composition, bordering Rabajà. BARBARESCO MONTESTEFANOIt is one of the vineyards with higher concentration of calcium in the soil that gives to the wine a powerful tannic structure. The extra heat of the South facing slope is responsible for the Montestefano full body and almost meaty texture. It is deep flavored wines with massive tannins, but quite ripe and well integrated in the wine because of the warm exposure. In a wet season its grapes can hold rain well and it is usually the last one to be picked among the Barbaresco vineyards. For all these reason it is probably the Barbaresco that more reminds of Barolo where tar and roses prevails on the refined violet flavors. Despite this massive attitude remains a true Barbaresco, never too heavy on the palate and with a classy finish that lingers on the palate without overwhelming your

senses. First produced by Produttori in 1974.

PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO MONTESTEFANO RISERVA 2014

Forest floor, red-skinned berry, leather and tobacco aromas mingle with a balsamic note. The focused, structured palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, raspberry compote and licorice while a graphite note backs up the finish. A backbone of fine-grained tannins and bright acidity gives it an age-worthy structure. Drink 2021–2034. -Kerin O'Keefe

BARBARESCO MUNCAGOTAThis single vineyard looks South/East, facing the cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of that, the Muncagota vineyard shows beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. Muncagota is a perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world. First produced by Produttori del Barbaresco, as Moccagatta, in 1967. Muncagota is the piedmontese dialect version of the word Moccagatta, same vineyard,

different spelling.

BARBARESCO OVELLOOvello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco, higher on the sea level and dropping down to the river in a 300 feet, abrupt bluff. It is a relatively large area with a number of subzones with West and East exposure, all sharing a similar calcareous soils rich in clay. The extra clay and the cooler microclimate give the Ovello its exuberant and youthful quality in the fruit and its fuller body, which defines its distinctive personality. Explosive fruit on the palate and firm, sometime rough, tannins on the finish, these wines always bring a lot of joy to the palate and deliver powerful structure, that needs some years of bottle ageing to balance out. Domizio Cavazza had vineyards in Ovello (and Pora) when he started producing Barbaresco in 1894. It was also among the first 5 vineyards produced as single vineyard by

Produttori in 1967.

BARBARESCO PAJÈThis vineyard is a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. However Pajè is slightly lower in altitude and the vineyard is more open to the Tanaro River influence resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with high calcium level. In result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins and it is never shy in acidity. The latter makes Pajè somehow sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages. Pajè is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate. First vintage produced was 1967 as a small commemorative label for the “Cavalieri del

Tartufo” association.

BARBARESCO PORAProximity to the Tanaro River creates a unique microclimate for the Pora, a beautiful hill with West and South exposures, while the northern side of the hill is an abrupt bluff that drops into the river and where the famous white truffles

can be find on season. Due to the proximity to the valley floor, Pora is relatively warm in the early morning hours, but breezy with slightly higher humidity through most of the day. Soil fertility is slightly higher here and this gives to the wine a smoother character, tannins are soft and the aromas always tend to open up in the early years of life. Pora is also one of the most historical vineyards in Barbaresco, as it was part of the property of Domizio Cavazza, the father of Barbaresco, who in 1894, founded the first Cantina Sociale. Produced as a single vineyard

by Produttori del Barbaresco since 1967.

BARBARESCO RABAJÀRabajà produces a quintessential Barbaresco, one of the most complete and balanced of the single vineyards. The vineyard lays at the conjunction of the two main ridges that form the Barbaresco village, one starting at Rabajà and going West towards the Tanaro River (with progressively less calcium and higher fertility in the soil) and the other one that goes from Rabajà to Ovello, South to North (with higher calcium content in the soil). The meeting of these two different soils give to Rabajà its incredible complexity. Bordering both Asili and Muncagota it combines the personality of those two great vineyards with and extra richness due to the South/West warm exposure. First

produced as a single vineyard in 1970.

BARBARESCO RIO SORDOThe vineyard is a long, South/West exposed hillside in the southern part of the Barbaresco village, not far from the river. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content compared to other areas of Barbaresco produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing, always elegant.

Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity. First produced as a single vineyard by Produttori del Barbaresco in 1978.
