What is COVID-19?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newlydiscovered coronavirus. The outbreak was first identified inWuhan, Hubei Province,

China, in December 2019. TheWorld Health Organization (WHO) declared theoutbreak to be a pandemic on 11March 2020 with cases of COVID-19 having been

reported in over 200 countries and territories,

Most people infectedwith the COVID-19 virus experiencemild tomoderate

respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people andthosewith underlying health conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic

respiratory disease, and cancer aremore likely to develop serious illness.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from

the nosewhen an infected person coughs or sneezes.

At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However,

there aremany ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments.WHOwillcontinue to provide updated information as soon as clinical findings become available?
