B a c k t o S c h o o l T i m eHola Rota,I hope all of you have thoroughly enjoyed your sum-

mer here in Rota, as it’s time to buckle down and prepare for a change of pace – yes, the return to school is right around the corner.

For some it conjures dread - but I believe most are excited to get back in the swing of things, meeting new teachers, making new friends and sharing new experiences. Many here on base are hurriedly preparing for Monday’s return; the David

Glasgow Farragut staffs are prepping classrooms, kids are fighting the late day sun in their quest to get to bed a little earlier, and maybe some parents are even a little excited to get back some of that much-needed “me” time during the day. One thing is for sure – the end of summer is nearing soon. Luckily, we still have quite a bit of warm weather and sunlight ahead of us, so maybe the transition won’t be very difficult.

Many here in our community are heavily invested in the education of our kids. Family is a major priority and we are fortunate to have partnerships established here that are committed to the well-being of our students. Between the outstanding school staff, the medical community at the Naval Hospital, Child and Youth Pro-grams, MWR and even Security, we are well-stocked

with people who put a premium on the safety, security and well-being of our families.

The elementary school is welcoming its new principal, Mr. Walter Wilhoit, who arrived with his family from Yoko-suka. He’s a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) veteran, beginning his 22nd year of working with overseas military families. Welcome to Rota!

Also, the elementary school is hosting its 11th Annual Opening Day Celebration Monday. The event allows the students to become familiar with their surroundings while giving the parents the opportunity to enjoy an open house-type atmosphere where they can meet the teach-ers and staff in somewhat of a less formal environment. There’s even a picnic lunch that day, so bring a blanket or some lawn chairs and enjoy the day. Remember, it’s a short day for the elementary students.

The middle and high schoolers will have an orienta-tion/familiarization-type first day where they’ll learn what to expect and what is expected of them at school. Their Open House event for parents is Sept. 8 from 4 – 6:45 p.m. You can find more back-to-school information on Pages 6 – 9 of this week’s Coastline.

I wish all of you a wonderful experience as school gets back in gear. I was always very excited to get back and see what opportunities and experiences awaited me. I hope you are feeling that same energy and enthusiasm as you prepare for the 2011-2012 school. Good luck!

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- Navy Personnel Com-mand launched an Enlisted Retention Board online feedback poll on its Web site Aug. 19 that allows Sailors

Online Feedback Tool Asks S a i l o r s E R B Q u e s t i o n s froM naVy personnel CoMMand puBliC affairs

to learn more about the board. The short, non-scientific, online poll features links to

Enlisted Retention Board (ERB) information. Participation is voluntary and confidential, and Navy

Personnel Command (NPC) does not track or identify participants. The online feedback tool will run for two weeks and can be completed by any visitor to the Web site at www.npc.navy.mil.

The ERB convened at Navy Personnel Command (NPC) Monday. The quota-based board will review the records of approximately 16,000 Sailors from 31 over-manned rates who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in NAVADMIN 129/11. The ERB will identify about 13,000 Sailors for retention based on available quotas. An esti-mated 3,000 Sailors will not be retained on active duty.

The Navy is overmanned and must reduce the number of Sailors on active duty to meet the number required by law.

"We value every Sailor and family, so the decision to establish this board was made after careful consid-eration," said Quinn. "We simply had to face the reality of the situation. Unlike the drawdown nearly 10 years ago, we are providing the opportunity this time, on a level playing field, for all to compete to stay."

Sailors who are not selected for retention can apply for the Selected Reserves or Individual Ready Reserves and will have access to the Navy's Transition Assistance Program for benefits and employment counseling.

NPC first implemented its online feedback service in 2008 and has had nearly 400,000 participants in more than 80 topics.

Chief Hospital Corpsman Daryhl Tolley gives Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Ramon Eusebio permission to process a set of permanent change of station (PCS) orders. Tolley and Eusebio are hospital corpsman detailers at Navy Personnel Command (NPC).

Preparing for a Smooth Transition

Rosario (Charo) Marquez Jaen prepares more than 450 room keys prior to the arrival of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5 earlier this month. This is one of the many tasks associated with the turnover of the Sea-bee battalions.

Jaen worked closely with NMCB 74 and NMCB 5 to ensure a smooth transition of the outgoing and incoming personnel and that the room utilization inventory is accurate. Inventory information is utilized by the Region and Com-mander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) to plan for future funding projects.

Members of Commander, Naval Expeditionary Task Force Europe and Africa (CTF) 68 welcomed their new commodore during a change of command ceremony at Naval Station Rota, Spain, Friday.

Captain Bradley Martin relieved Capt. Martin Beck, with Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet Vice Admiral Harry Harris presiding over the change of command.

“From the time that Marty took command, he set out to build a high-performance fighting machine; a task force that is immediately and easily identified as a winner, a task force with a reputation for aggres-siveness, a task force that adjusts to change on its own, with its eye on the future, even as it focuses on the mission at hand,” said Harris.

Beck has led CTF 68 since July 2009. The Task Force consists of nearly 1,300 Sailors and Marines who make up Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 8, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5, Marine Corps Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Company Europe, Mobile Expeditionary Security Squadron 2 and Underwater Construction Team 1. The Task Force’s subordinate units span Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Beck said this ceremony marks the transfer of authority, responsibility and accountability from one commander to another as well as the opportunity to speak to each of the Sailors and Marines who give so much to preserve liberty, provide national defense and to offer a taste of freedom to others who have never known it.

“Martin is a seasoned, former amphibious group commander, and it is with great pride that I surrender the reigns of the greatest task force in Naval Forces Europe and Africa to you,” said Beck. “Take care of the troops, and I am confident they will always take care of you as they have me.”

Martin thanked Beck for his hospitality and thor-ough turnover.

“Your selfless leadership has resulted in this truly great task force,” said Martin. “It is a tremendous honor for me to be a part of it.”

Harris said he knows Martin is up to the task.“You will be tested, and you will certainly be chal-

lenged,” said Harris. “But the wealth of experience you bring to Task Force 68 makes you the perfect choice to lead this group of Sailors and Marines.”

The Wilhoits have arrived in Spain from Japan! "I am thrilled to be assigned as the incoming principal of the

Rota and Sevilla school communities for School Year 2011-12! This year begins my 22nd year with DoDEA; having previ-ously served in Germany, England and Japan, as a classroom teacher, school administrator, district-level staff developer and chief of staff. I have taught first and third through sixth grades in a variety of settings to include self-contained classroom, gifted cluster, and multi-age. Most recently, my family and I were stationed at Combined Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY), Japan, where I was principal of The Sullivans School, the largest school in DoDEA with as many as 1,300 students. I look forward to my next educational adventure in Spain. Da-vid Glasgow Farragut - Rota Elementary School and Sevilla Elementary/Middle School, having just finished their accredita-tion reviews in school year 2010-11, have a fine reputation for excellence and student achievement. I accept the challenge to step into two such prestigious schools and desire to partner with both school communities to continue to promote school cultures of academic excellence and achievement.

Among my educational priorities are:• teachers and students are fully engaged in the daily busi-

ness of teaching and learning - teaching bell to bell making the most of every school day.

• literacy and numeracy are key foundational skills – all students should read and problem solve every day.

• technology is a way of the present, not only the future - our students are digital natives while most of us are digital

immigrants. They can teach us a thing or two.

• the early childhood is the critical time to acquire another language – what better place to capitalize on our host nation and continuing DoDEA initiative, FLES.

• and school and home must join in partnership to promote student success – the more engaged parents are in their children’s school, the higher their achievement.

I am a graduate of Lubbock Christian University, in Lubbock, Texas. I received my master’s degree from Texas Tech University, and I am writing my doctoral dissertation with Liberty University concentrating on research in early childhood education. I am originally from Portales, N.M., where I grew up the youngest of six children of a dairy and alfalfa hay farmer. I learned the value of hard work on the family farm and even milked the family cow through my senior year in high school.

I look forward to becoming an integral part of the school communities in Rota and Sevilla. Let’s hear it for a great school year 2011-12!"

Walter Wilhoit

The Navy Exchange (NEX) wants to help its customers pay for their chil-dren’s college education through its A-OK Student Reward Program. Four times per school year, four students will be the recipients of a $5,000, $3,000 $2,000 or $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond.

Any eligible full-time student with a B grade point average equivalent or better, as determined by their school system, may enter the drawing. Eli-gible students include dependent chil-dren of active duty military members, reservists and military retirees enrolled in first through twelfth grade. Each student may enter only once each grading period and must re-enter with each qualifying report card.

To enter the drawing, stop by any NEX with a current report card and have a NEX associate verify the minimum grade average. Then fill out an entry card and obtain an A-OK ID, which entitles the student to discount coupons for NEX products and ser-vices.

The Navy Exchange Service Com-mand (NEXCOM) has been offering students a chance to win a savings bond through its A-OK Student Reward Program since 1997. Since the pro-gram began, NEXCOM has awarded $504,000 in savings bonds with the help of its generous vendor partners.

This year at DGF Elementary, all grade levels will be using a new math series. To prepare for teaching the new math series, the third through sixth grade faculty mem-bers came back to school a day early to attend math training while pre-kindergarten through second grade faculty members came back two days early for training.

The training focused on getting faculty members familiar with the new math series materials, look at the correlation of the new series with their grade level standards and to discuss the best way to implement the new series.

Dear Parents and Students of DGF Middle and High School,

Welcome to David Glasgow Farragut Middle and High School, home of the Admirals.

On Monday, the first day of school, all students should report to the patio in front of the library by 8:30 a.m.

New students: just follow the crowd. Students will be grouped alphabetically within their grade level. These student groups will go through an orientation that in-cludes: vision and health check, a campus tour, com-puter rules, password, locker assignments, sports and activities briefing, picking up class schedules/planner purchase, student handbook review and an information center introduction.

Orientation will conclude at noon, when students will have an opportunity to eat a sack lunch. In order to buy lunch, students must have lunch tickets. Lunch tickets will be on sale on Monday (only) at the school and are available any time at the NEX. After lunch, students will go to each one of their classes in an abbreviated schedule. Students will get a brief orientation to each teacher's expectation and any special supply needs.

School will be dismissed at our normal dismissal: 3:30 p.m. Regular classes will start on Tuesday. We

will have all seven classes Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Thursday, students will go to period one through four, and on Friday students will go to classes five through seven and then seminar.

Middle school students (grades seven and eight) are asked to have a 3" three-ring binder. All students are required to have their own agenda planner to keep track of assignments. We have agenda planners available for purchase for $5. All proceeds from the sale of the planners go into the student activity general fund and will be used to purchase next school year's planners.

Students do not have to purchase the school plan-ners, but they must have a planner. I recommend parents and students wait until they meet the teachers before they buy supplies, other than paper, pens and pencils needed for the first day.

The cost of a reduced-price meal will remain unchanged through school year 2013-2014.

Changes in the DoD Student Meal Program, mandated by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, are being phased-in over the three year period to minimize the financial impact on families.

The DoD Student Meal Program remains a subsidized USDA-approved and nutritious option for families with school-age children.

An acquaintance of mine and his wife were visiting Rota once, and we got together for a Spanish dinner out in town. We have known each other for a short

time, and neither of us had met the other's spouse. My bride wasn’t so sure about this “date” but she was very supportive.

We soon discovered my friend grew up in the same lo-cale as my wife and shared not only the same number of chil-dren but the same break down

of one daughter and two boys. The more we talked, the more we discovered similarities in our journey in the Navy and how we came to be where we are.

Neither of us had any desire to be a pastor, let alone a chaplain in the Navy. Though I only briefly thought

about joining the Navy right out of high school, I never gave it much thought after going to college. My friend had a similar experience. He never intended to go to college and both of us absolutely recoiled at the thought of having to get up in front of a crowd and preach. Faith in Christ was important to both of us, but who wants to be a preacher? Neither wife grew up thinking “I want to marry a man who will be a pastor.”

Our paths seemed to mirror each other. It seemed like we were old friends. The evening quickly slipped away, and midnight was upon us before we knew it. It was one of the more memorable evenings I've had in Rota, and we promised to see each other down the road.

So what's the lesson here? Sometimes we get so wrapped up in predetermined notions of how things will go, that we paralyze ourselves with negative expecta-tions. Had we not ventured out together, we would have

missed a great evening. Now don't get me wrong, this is not an article simply encouraging you to have a "positive attitude." I am the worst example of this. Pessimism abounds! I am prone to worry and plan for the worst, especially in the dark hours of the night.

In Christ, we have forgiveness for this sin of worry and negativism. In His forgiveness, in His love and mercy, we can find rest. We can face the new and coming day with His peace. There is a prayer that helps me at these times, one I’ve often prayed on a ship and in Iraq. “Be present merciful God, and protect us through the hours of the night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of life may find our rest in You, though Jesus Christ our Lord.”

If you would like to speak with a chaplain for any reason, please call the Religious Ministries Depart-ment at 727-2161.

Irish Chronicles Part 2

An old security tower built when the Vikings were a threat.

Glendalough

Striking a pose at the "P.S. I Love You" bridge.

Scotsman’s Bay, Dun Laoghaire.

Serenity.

As our road trip continued, we passed through valleys and tree tunnels that made us

feel like we were in an olden day movie - wanting to walk through them in awe. When we reached Glendalough, we were taken to see a hidden lake called “Guinness

Lake." The lake is called Guinness Lake because the water literally looks like the

beer - dark and brown. Near the lake, at the bottom of the hill, we saw the house

the Guinness family constructed and lived in. Apparently, Michael Jackson and the

Beatles once lived there too. Our next stop was to see one of the main spots where the movie “P.S. I Love You”

was filmed. Richard LaGravenese, the director of the movie, wanted to use a specific

bridge in Glendalough for one scene in the movie. When we drove by it, everyone in our

bus went crazy! We stopped near the bridge to walk and take pictures of it. Along

the bridge there were small waterfalls with rocks to stand on. At this point, Sue and

I went camera crazy taking funny pictures of each other near the waterfalls and

bridge.

After we were done visiting the “P.S. I Love You” film spot, we went to see where

the 13th century-based movie “Braveheart” was filmed. Although the movie is about a

Scottish hero, it was filmed in Wicklow, Ireland. The specific spot is called “Sally Gap,”

where you will find wild Irish mountains and purple heather growing - a beautiful

spot to film a movie. When we had finished going to all of the locations where these movies were filmed, we

were taken to a small village in Wicklow to eat at a local pub. We enjoyed an Irish

beef stew and a pint of Guinness to regain energy for our visit to the two lakes in

Wicklow National Park. Before seeing the two lakes, we passed by ruins, headstones and a round tower that

was built as a security tower when the Vikings used to be a big threat. Certain

headstones we saw had the Celtic cross on them and others had a Christian symbol.

It was very interesting to see and learn at the same time. Beyond the ruins were the two lakes we wanted to see. Our tour guide let us walk

along the lakes for an hour and take photographs. This was one of my favorite

spots of my entire journey. Our time in the countryside of Wicklow was definitely different than the city life we

had been exposed to in Dublin. Visiting the outskirts, seeing all of the green in the valleys and mountains, the lakes and the sea - it was all gorgeous. Going to Wicklow and Glendalough changed my perspective of Ireland completely. This was what I had seen in photographs all of my life, and finally getting to see it in person was a completely different experience.

I hope that these chronicles bring desires to visit Ireland and the beauty that is holds. It truly is a wonderful place.

Shanza III: Indian Restaurant Now Open in RotaShanza III opened just about a week ago in Rota.

I had been watching the spot for a couple of weeks, since the sign was up before they opened, so I could go

as soon as they actually did open. Before I got there, I received word via a friend that she had tried it and thought it was outstanding. Natu-rally, I got there as soon

as possible to see if they were interested in advertising, and the next day, my husband and I went there to eat to find out for ourselves if it was really good. Fantastic! That is the best word to describe the food we had. It is the best Indian food I remember eating. Everything we ordered was delicious and done to perfection. The cook who comes here via Málaga, is from the Punjab region and has 25 years of experience. He special-izes in Balti dishes that are cooked very slowly with his secret blend of spices. He showed us the oven where he makes the Nan bread that was out of this world and also showed us that he makes the cheese they use in some of their dishes. The one we tried with the cheese was Paneer Tikka Masala that also has almonds and a tomato sauce. So tasty! In addition, we had Navratan Kormic which is a dish of creamed vegetables with yo-gurt, almonds and coconut. This was followed by lamb Kapurthala, lamb Madras, Basmati rice with safran and garlic Nan bread. I hated to see the meal end, but by this time, I was really too full to eat any more. I can’t wait to go back!

The service was good and truly friendly. The prices are good and the restaurant itself is clean and pleas-ant. If you like Indian food, Shanza III is a must, and if you have never tried it, it is the best place to start. The restaurant is located right by the hands statue on Avda. San Fernando in Rota so it is easy to find. By the way,

they also serve Turkish food, but that will have to wait until another time.

Tonight is the last Thurs-day in August so it is the last chance to enjoy flamenco in El Patio de las 7 Esquinas this summer. Go and en-joy it. This is also the last weekend of August therefore the last of the Mercadillos in Puerto Sherry. You can stop by Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight and see what they have to offer.

As advertised last week, Hotel Restaurante Al Lago in Zahara de la Sierra has a Labor Day Weekend special. Give them a call at 662-05-2 553 or e-mail info@al-lago for reservations or more in-formation.

Also, advertised last week was the Indiana Cattery and Kennel in Chiclana, so if you have pets to board while you are away, give Hugh a call at 956-53-5560.

After the first ad for Magic American Diner was published, I received a few phone calls and e-mails from readers saying that there was no address. There was, but truthfully, it was a bit hard to spot, so last week we put it in negative. Hopefully that made it easier to see. In any case, Magic is located right off Calle Luna in downtown Puerto. Luna is the street that runs from where the “vaporcito” docks to the big church.
