The Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library at Georgia Regents University and the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library are sponsoring a series of presentations focusing on health education and health literacy. The series will focus on health topics of interest to local residents, including asthma, sickle cell anemia, heart health, nutrition,

obesity, and diabetes. Health Literacy classes will focus on how to find reliable health information for yourself and others and how to talk to your doctor to get what you need out of your healthcare. Saturday, July 18, 6pm-8pmJoin the library and the Asociación Cultural Hispanoamericana (ACHA) in celebrating the culture and independence of Argentina, Colombia, Perú andVenezuela, and in celebrating the culture and the Constitution Day of Puerto Rico. There will be authentic music from each country, cultural presentation, documentary, folkloric dance groups, dance and other surprises. Hispanic dishes made by ACHA members will be available for sampling. NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTHHispanic Heritage Month is the period to recognize the contributions that Hispanic Americans have given to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The term Hispanic, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish speaking people in the United States of any race.

The observation started in September 1968 when Congress of the United States authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. Twenty years later, it was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30 day period. Public Law 100-402, enacted into law on the 17th of August of 1988, authorizes and requests the President to issue an annual proclamation designating the 15th of September through the 15th of October as “Hispanic Heritage Month”.

The 15th of September was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence from Spain on the 15th of September of 1821. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days from Spain on the 16th of September and 18th of September of 1821, respectively.

Lastly, let’s not forget that the 12th of October, Columbus Day or “Día de la Raza”, also falls within this 30-day period.

Tuesday, July 146:00 pmDiscovering Dave: Spirit Captured in ClayIn February of 2014, the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library was honored to screen the historical documentary, Discovering Dave: Spirit Captured in Clay, based on the life of enslaved Edgefield potter, David Drake. The film tells the story of a discovery made in 2006 when archaeologists from the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program unearthed several shards of alkaline-glazed stoneware from a 1950s-era archaeological site within the boundaries of SRS. Each fragment was painstakingly fitted together until the entire pot was reassembled, revealing a signature etched into the clay. The name spelled out in beautiful script was “Dave.” The discovery inspired Archaeologist, George Wingard to begin researching David Drake’s life, which culminated, with the assistance of filmmaker Mark Albertin, in the making of the film. Since its screening at the Augusta Public Library in 2014, Discovering Dave has been entered into film festivals all across the United States and won multiple awards. Please join us in the auditorium of the headquarters library auditorium as we once again screen the film, and welcome George Wingard who will discuss David Drake’s life, the film, and the pot discovered by SRARP.

Wednesday, August 52:00 pmIs Something Fishy in Augusta Canal?Are trout living in the canal? Do rare plants lurk in the shoals? Are alien invaders choking out the natives? Through a program sponsored by the National Park Foundation,

Davidson Magnet School high school students have been studying the canal and its environment. The young citizen-scientists will share their discoveries and reveal their findings including the potential for establishing a trout fishery in the Augusta Canal. Program will take place in the auditorium of the headquarters library.

Using the United States Census as a starting point we will explore how to determine what other records can be located , and where, allowing for a more complete picture of an ancestor’s life. The Walls Do Talk: Translating Adinkra Symbols in Southern ArchitectureHeritage Preservation advocate, Ms. Joyce Law, presents a photograph exhibition of diverse residences and commercial buildings in neighborhoods of Richmond and Aiken Counties, from Summerville to Hammond Ferry that are decorated with West African cultural symbols known as adinkra. These symbols have popularly become a standard of Southern architecture, however, more than looking nice they have cultural meaning. Textiles, furniture, and other decorative pieces also repeat these themes. Visit the library’s Georgia Heritage Room during August and September and see if your home is represented.

Remembering the Former Town of Savannah River SiteA collection of artifacts on display through July from the former towns of Ellenton and Dunbarton, South Carolina. Exhibit is on loan from the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and located in the Georgia Heritage Room on the third floor of the headquarters library. Call (706) 826-1511 for details.

Society for Creative AnachronismThe Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to the study of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. There are 50,000 participants worldwide who recreate many different aspects of these eras, including fighting, fencing, archery, and numerous arts and handcrafts. Members learn about the eras they study through research and by wearing the clothing of the time and doing the activities practiced between 600 and 1600 A.D. The SCA is open to all.
