OUR PURPOSE

Established in 2014, AIBE seeks to establish UQ’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (BEL) as the leading institute and intellectual hub of business, economics and law research in Australia. We: • facilitate world-class research and

publications on business, economic and law which have direct business relevance and application

• initiate informed debate on timely public policy issues

• undertake, facilitate and promote innovative next horizon applied research

• initiate and sponsor informed debate on business, economic and law policy

OUR STRATEGY

AIBE develops engaging relationships between our researchers and government, industry and society.

We have direct access to more than 200 world-renowned experts who can deliver research as a collaborative or consultancy project.

We also pursue opportunities to publicise AIBE-supported research in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

Laura Steele Special Projects Manager, AIBE

Laura brings extensive university management experience working as an Executive Officer and conducting institution-wide collaborative projects.

Laura previously worked in the Deputy Vice Chancellor’s office at Macquarie University, coordinating high-level projects across all academic areas. Her expertise is in providing strategic advice, risk mitigation and relationship management.

Laura also worked and conducted postgraduate study in international relations, economics and legal fields in the Netherlands, Russia and the Australian National University.

Tom Cole Senior Research Officer, AIBE

Tom brings extensive experience as a researcher and research project manager.

He was previously the Research Projects Manager at the Cooperative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living. He managed more than 40 research projects with industry, universities and the CSIRO developing new social, technological and policy tools to facilitate the development of low carbon products and services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment.

As a student, Tom was awarded the University of South Australia Medal along with first class honours.

Professor Paul Gollan Director, AIBE

Professor Gollan is a Professor of Management and the Director of Australian Institute of the Business and Economics (AIBE) at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at The University of Queensland.

Previously Paul worked as a Professor of Management and Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University, as well as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Management at the London School of Economics. He has lectured at a number of universities and colleges throughout the United Kingdom and Australia.

Paul has authored, co-authored and co-edited 14 books in the fields of human resources and industrial relations. He has also produced numerous book chapters and refereed journal articles, and has published over 200 articles in media outlets such as the Australian Financial Review and The Age. He was also a Chief Investigator on a number of recent competitive research grants.

He holds an MSc(Econ) and PhD from the London School of Economics.

MEET OUR HONORARY FELLOWSWhile not assigned to any specific research project, honorary fellows perform the role of AIBE ambassadors, and actively promote the interests of UQ and the Institute.

Professor Vani K. Borooah

Vani is Emeritus Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and an Adjunct Professor at the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, India. He is a Member and Secretary of the Royal Irish Academy.

Stephen Cartwright

Stephen is CEO of the NSW Business Chamber – the peak business organisation in NSW. He is also CEO of Australian Business Solutions Group, and Chairman of Australian Business Lawyers.

Helen Conway

Helen has 30 years’ experience in business and the public sector. She was a partner in a major Sydney law firm and has worked as a senior executive in the insurance, transport, energy, retail and construction industries for 18 years. “Government has indicated an increasing reliance on data and research to make policy decisions. Those wishing to influence the development of policy must work within these parameters. AIBE is able to provide access to researchers in an academic institution that is ranked in the top 50 universities in the world, with a proven track record of high level, impactful and engaged research.”

Professor Stephen Deery

Stephen is a Professor of Human Resource Management. His principal research is in the areas of organisational performance and employee turnover and his research has been published in leading journals. He was also Editor-in-Chief of Human Relations.

Peter Farrell

Peter is the Founder and Chairman of Biotech company ResMed, a global manufacturer of products for the treatment of sleep disorders. ResMed employs more than 4000 people, with facilities in Australia, France, Singapore and the US.

Philip Forrest

Philip is a non-executive director of seven companies in the south-east Asia region. He was previously Asia Head for ANZ Bank, with responsibility for activities in 11 countries. He also spent 15 years with Citibank in five countries.

Ross Gittins

Ross is an economics editor of the Sydney Morning Herald and an economic columnist for The Age. His books include Gittins’ Guide to Economics, Gittinomics and The Happy Economist. Ross was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008 for his service to journalism.

Joanne Gray

Joanne is the Editor of the Australian Financial Review (AFR) BOSS magazine. She has extensive experience as an editor including Washington Correspondent and the AFR. Joanne holds an MBA from the Melbourne Business School and a BEc LLB from The University of Sydney.

Professor Ian Harper

Ian Harper is one of Australia’s best known economists. He is a member of the Australian Advisory Board of Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia in 2000 and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors in 2009.

Dr Peter Higgs

Peter is an economist by training and has extensive international experience in funds management. He is the Executive Chairman of TGM and a non-Executive Director of Queensland European Investment Services Ltd.

Michele Levine

Michele is the CEO of Roy Morgan Research, and has more than 30 years’ experience as a researcher. She was instrumental in developing and refining Roy Morgan Single Source and the Roy Morgan Business Survey in global markets.

MEET OUR HONORARY FELLOWS

Philip Noble

Philip is CEO of the Queensland Treasury Corporation. He has 26 years experience in financial markets treasury and risk management, government priorities and borrowing requirements.

Chris Roberts

Chris is CEO of global biotechnology company Cochlear Limited. He is also the Director of ResMed, and was the Chairman of Research Australia, working in the medical device industry for more than 35 years.

Michael Roche

Michael is Chief Executive of the Queensland Resources Council. He has held executive management roles with the Australian Stock Exchange in Sydney, including as Executive General Manager of ASX’s markets and market data businesses.

Paul Willman

Paul is a Professor of Management at the London School of Economics. He is also the Director of the Private Wealth Programme at Oxford University, a Council Member of the UK Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service.

SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWS AND PROJECTS

Professor John Quiggin, School of Economics

John Quiggin is an Australian Laureate Fellow in Economics at UQ and is prominent both as a research economist and commentator on Australian economic policy. He has produced 1500 publications, and has written on climate change, micro-economic reform, privatisation, employment policy and the management of the Murry-Darling system.

Professor Neal Ashkanasy, UQ Business School

Neal Ashkanasy has a PhD in social and organisational psychology, and research interests in leadership, organisational culture, and business ethics. He has published in leading journals and serves on sveral editorial boards.

OUR PROJECTS

We focus the minds of world-leading experts on the challenges and opportunities your business faces; experts who can apply their knowledge and rigorous academic modelling to help ensure you are on the front foot for what the future may hold.

One of the great benefits of working with us is rigour and transparency: unlike consultancies, we are delighted to be able to share and publish our modelling if this is what our business partners request.

• In 2015 we brokered a strategic partnership between UQ and the Port of Brisbane Authority to develop port-related engineering solutions and technology to help future-proof the port as Queensland’s economic engine.

• We completed a pilot project for the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Federal Department of Industry looking at the future drivers and challenges of the workplace including an aging workforce and flexibility and diversity issues.

• We are working with ANZ to produce a series of economic and financial reports about the short-term challenges facing Australia and south-east Asia.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWS: AIBE PROJECT LEADERSSenior Research Fellows are the heads of projects that have been accepted into AIBE.

• Our TC Beirne School of Law Pro Bono Centre is working with the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO) Asia-Pacific to draft a model franchise agreement for a suite of business training materials for small to medium enterprises in the Asia-Pacific.

• A collaborative research project with the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) is underway.
