Description of Auto Gas Auto gas is LPG in its use as an automotive fuel. LPG  stands for

"Liquefied Petroleum Gas" which is a portable, clean and efficient energy source. The term is widely used to describe propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10) or a mixture thereof. As a co-product of natural gas and crude oil production and thanks to the multiple production pathways, diversified transportation routes with decentralize trading hubs in its supply chain, LPG is readily available to consumers around the world. Its unique properties make it a versatile energy source which can be used in more than 1,000 different applications.

LPG is a derivative of two large energy industries: The processing of natural gas liquids and the refining of crude oil. Natural gas extraction and processing When gas is drawn from the earth, it is a mixture of several gases

and liquids such as ethane, propane and butane. These are often referred to as natural gas liquids (NGL). NGLs may represent up to 10% of the unprocessed gas stream. Therefore, before natural gas is marketed, some NGLs, including LPG (propane and butane) are separated out, depending on the "wetness" of the gas produced. Worldwide, gas processing is the source of approximately 60% of LPG produced.

Description of Auto Gas (Continued) Crude extraction and oil refining Some NGLs are also trapped in crude oil itself. In order to stabilize the crude oil

for pipeline or tanker distribution, it is gradually depressurized and the vaporizing gases are separated and collected. In an oil refinery, LPG are produced at various stages: atmospheric distillation, reforming, cracking and others. The LPG produced will be between 1 and 4% of crude oil processed. This yield will depend on the type of crude oil, the degree of sophistication of the oil refinery and the market values of propane and butane compared to other oils products. Worldwide, refining is the source of approximately 40% of LPG produced.

Future Potential While the volumes coming from refineries are not expected to rise dramatically,

the growth potential of the path through natural gas extraction and processing is considered significant: There are some areas in the world where associate gas is still flared instead of being collected. The production of advanced biodiesel, other synthetic fuels, as well as future pathways, which convert electric power into liquid hydrocarbon fuels, also yield LPG.

in helping worlds meet its energy and environmental challenges: Reducing pollution: One diesel vehicle emits the same quantities of nox

as over 20 LPG vehicles, and Pm (particulate matter) emissions from LPG-fuelled vehicles on an urban cycle are below reliably measurable levels 3

Mitigating climate change: Well-To-Wheel analysis demonstrates that an Auto gas-fuelled vehicle generates 14% and 10% fewer CO2 emissions than its petrol and diesel run equivalents respectively;

Auto gas also emits almost no black carbon, a pollutant which is also the second biggest

contributor to climate change Enhancing security of supply: With its diverse origins, flexible supply

chain and increasing production levels, LPG is an alternative energy Europe can rely on. According to the BP statistical review, LPG from NG fields alone could last at least 60 years at the current reserve to production ratio

• Reducing fuel costs for citizens: By virtue of its strong supply prospects, LPG is cheaper than conventional fuels. Furthermore, as a result of its environmental advantages, it benefits from a favorable tax framework, making it by far the most affordable transport fuel option for citizens;

• Stimulating competitiveness and employment : Composed largely of SMEs, the Auto gas industry employs thousands of citizens from all across world in high-skill jobs. moreover, All companies are able to export their technology abroad, thereby contributing to worlds goal of moving toward a knowledge-based economy.

THE AUTOGAS MARKET Auto gas is the most widely used and accepted separate alternative to the

conventional petroleum-based transport fuels, gasoline and diesel. A number of countries today have well-developed auto gas markets. Global consumption of Auto gas has been rising rapidly in recent years, reaching 25.8 million tones in 2013 – an increase of 9.4 Mt, or 57%, over the 2003 level.

There are now almost 25 million Auto gas vehicles in use around the world. Yet Auto gas use is still concentrated in a small number of countries: just five countries – Korea, Turkey, Russia, Poland and Italy – together accounted for half of global Auto gas consumption in 2013. The 12 countries surveyed in the Auto gas Incentive Policies document accounted for 55%.

The share of Auto gas in total automotive-fuel consumption varies widely among those countries, ranging from a mere 0.1% in the United States to 18% in Turkey. The only country other than Turkey where Auto gas makes up more than 10% of the automotive-fuel market is Korea, where the share is 14%. The enormous disparity in the success of Auto gas in competing against the conventional automotive fuels, gasoline and diesel, is explained mainly by differences in government incentive policies.
