Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Autumn is my favorite time of the year. The scents and the colors of nature are beautiful, the temperatures get brisk and cool, and the football and the hockey seasons are in full swing! Fall is notable, too, because it simultaneously contains both beginnings and endings. A new school year has started, and a new Buckeye football season has begun; another summer has ended, and the farmers’ markets have concluded for the year. Some things are winding-down, while others are gearing-up. As we transition into this distinctive season of beginnings and endings, I want to share with you some new endeavors, which will be beneficial for the continued spiritual growth our parish. First, beginning in October, we will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays from 12 Noon to 1:00 PM. Perhaps you would like to drop in and spend some quiet time before the Lord’s Presence in the Eucharist. During that same hour, I will also be offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the confessional. This will hopefully give you another opportunity to experience God’s mercy and forgiveness in addition to the established Saturday confession times. Second, Deacon Jim Kelly has begun a fantastic new series focused on the wonders of the Mass presented by Bishop Robert Barron. These classes are offered on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings and are a great chance to explore the depths of what happens at every Mass! Finally, our parish is now associated with a marvelous online resource called FORMED© (https://formed.org) which offers an incredible variety of presentations, covering an array of topics and subjects from across the heritage of our Catholic faith. Be sure to watch the bulletin for more information about FORMED© and how you will be able to access its treasury of quality material. In these ways, and many more, may the good Lord continue to guide and strengthen our faith and our parish through all beginnings and endings. What’s New at Saint Pius X Catholic ElementaryOn August 22, 2018 we opened our doors to 513 students ready to grow spiritually and academically. Our theme for this school year is Using God’s Gifts. The school year is off to a fantastic start, to say the least. The summer was filled with many hours of building maintenance and hard work to create a new design and layout to our cafeteria. Special thanks to our Home and School Association for purchasing the new cafeteria tables. Because student safety is our number one priority, this summer we updated doors and cameras, the teachers received First Aid/CPR training courtesy of funds raised by The Night in Green event and we continue to have a special duty officer daily. We welcomed several new staff members to the SPX community: Mrs. Lisa Ruth, Assistant Principal, Mrs. Andrea Hayson, 2nd grade, Mrs. Jodie Moriarty, 5th grade, Miss Margaret Nardy, 6th grade, Mrs. Debbie Kitsmiller, Intervention Specialist, Mr. Matt Held, 5th grade Aide, and Mrs. Laura Malpass, 6th-8th grade Aide. Father David Young has been such a blessing to our school and we are excited to grow as a school and a parish under his leadership.

This year, we are excited to announce that we will be starting a new club in the 7th and the 8th grades which will be advised by Mr. Jeremy Kehres. The National Junior Beta Club selects members based on commitment to service, academics, leadership and strong character. Beta Club members will create and participate in service projects at St. Pius X School and Parish. They will also have the exciting opportunity to compete in the Beta Club State Convention held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in February. Students compete in competitions ranging from robotics, video production, and a quiz bowl to speech contests, book battles, and talent. For more information, go to www.betaclub.org.

We are excited to announce that we have become providers for the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship. This Ohio scholarship will enable us to better meet the needs of our students who have been identified with learning disabilities. Because of these funds, we have been able to hire an additional intervention specialist and an additional part-time intervention tutor.

As I have mentioned before, our theme this year is Using God’s Gifts. During our opening meetings, our teachers worked in small groups to brainstorm a wide-range of activities to enrich our theme. Our first “Friends Group” will be held the last week of October. Our 8th graders will take on a leadership role and lead their small group activities based on our theme.

As a daily reminder for the students to use their God-given gifts, staff members will be handing out stickers to students who are “caught” using their gifts well or sharing their gifts with others. We recently held a sticker design contest in the middle school and two stickers were chosen to be printed. Congratulations to Nathan O. in 7th grade and Meleah O. in 6th grade for doing a wonderful job expressing our school theme! Their designs pictured above will be printed soon.

What is the Parish School of Religion (PSR) all about? We teach our students from grades Pre-K to 8th about the love of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit which includes our rich Catholic faith. These are usually St. Pius X young people who do not go to the parish day school.

We meet for 90 minutes about 29-30 times a year on Sundays. We have around 50 adult and High School student volunteers who give up their time to bring the Catholic religion to around 175 students.

Guided by the Diocese of Columbus, we choose materials from a list of religion textbook companies and a guide called the Religious Graded Course of Study which guides the catechists or the teachers on which subjects are taught for each particular grade. We primarily use the RCL textbooks.

In addition to the textbooks, prayers and the Bible, we use various type of methods for the students to learn about God including crafts, stories, music, art, service projects, stories, games and experiences to teach the Catholic faith. My Loyola Institute for Ministry Extension (LIMEX) courses taught me that parents and the Mass

are the main teachers of our Catholic Faith and that catechists continue those teachings. The Mass has every part of our faith within its structure which means it is very important for all Catholics to attend Sunday Mass to learn more about our Catholic Faith, which is a lifelong process.

The fifth grade teaches the students primarily about the Sacraments and the Mass. Recently, I had a young man who could answer every question correctly about them. At the end of the year, I asked him how he had learned so much. He smiled and said his mother made him go to Mass and to PSR every week. He found out he would not be bored if he paid attention and it paid off.

One item that the experts are telling us is that the students are not hearing traditional religious Christmas carols as often and, as a result, they do not know the story of Christ’s birth as well. I ask everyone to play Christmas carols at home this coming holiday season to keep Jesus and his message alive with our young people.

God bless.De Ann Bukowski Coordinator of Religious Education

What is the Parish School of Religion?

Experts tell us that exposing our young people to traditional religious Christmas carols at home helps them to know the story of Christ’s birth.

How Do I Keep My Child From Growing Up Feeling Entitled?

We are so blessed to be living in this country where many of us do not have to worry about how we will get our next meal. However, in this land of abundance, we run the risk of spoiling our children. We want them to grow up being thoughtful and grateful. We want them to be well- liked. Our children are so special to us personally, but they are not the center of everyone else’s universe!

Start early with teaching children to contribute to family life and to the running of your household. Even a toddler can use a toy rake, shovel or mop and feel proud. Expect more from your children and they will surprise you.

Say a short “No,” and follow through. If they get the candy that they want in the check-out line after whining three loud screams, that is what they will learn works!

Let them have disappointments. Let them hurt a bit and recover. By this we mean if your child forgets his or her backpack and homework at school, do not rush in or email the teacher to try to rush back to school to get it. Unless your child has a medical condition that would be impacted by a missed meal, do not leave home or work to bring in a forgotten lunch Consequences help children become responsible.

Let children save their own money for something. Remember how it felt the first time you saved for your own car? Do not buy everything they want.

Lead by example. Living a life of gratitude makes one feel less entitled. Have them draw or write in a gratitude journal or every evening have each family member say something for which they are grateful.

Live a “Giving Life.” Children will learn quickly how wonderful it feels to help others.

SPX Participates in the Rosary Coast-to-Coast Event On a beautiful and sunny Sunday afternoon in early October, St. Pius X parishioners came out to participate in the “Rosary Coast-to-Coast” event. This was a national event in which all the parishes in the United States were encouraged to gather at 4:00 PM EST on Sunday, October 7th to pray the Rosary for our country, the protection of life and sacramental marriage, and the preservation of our constitutional right to freely exercise our Catholic faith.

Over 150 parishioners, led by Father David Young, gathered around the school flagpole on Waggoner Road to pray the Rosary, seeking Our Blessed Mother’s intercession for our country, Holy Mother Church and our parish. St. Pius X’s participation in this wonderful service was spearheaded by Cyndi Williams and coordinated through the SPX Parish Advisory Council. The Parish Council and Father Dave would like to thank Cyndi Williams for her leadership, Judy Bryant for getting the SPX Youth Ministry involved, and to all the SPX parishioners who turned out to pray and to support this worthy cause.

Rosary Coast to Coast is inspired by the Rosary on the Border in Poland and the Rosary on the Coast in both Ireland and the UK. We are inviting Catholics across the country to pray together to call upon God through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary to heal our country and return it to Holiness.

CHURCH & SCHOOL INCOME

Parish Financial Report Commentary We are pleased to report that overall we finished the Fiscal Year ending June 2018 with favorable results. In the adjacent column, you will find an Abbreviated Financial Report, which outlines the various areas of income and expenses for the year.

The net income for the Church this year was $123,671. We thank all of our parishioners who continue to support the operational needs of the Parish through their offertory, building fund, and other special collections throughout the year. In addition, many of the departments throughout the campus showed profitable results, some due to reducing their expenses. Although we are very thankful, we feel it is important to mention the shortfall in our offertory collections this past fiscal year and that we have not been under budget for offertory in three years. We started to notice the shortfall in the winter and wrote bulletin articles to see if we could get closer to our budgeted number, as these dollars help us to maintain all of our programs and resources throughout the campus.

The Capital Campaign has generated in donations $841,290, which is not included in the daily operations of the Church and is paid out only for the construction you see around the campus. We are delighted in the progress of our Capital Campaign, as we are nearing completion of the construction for our new Parish Center. Our community will become stronger in faith as our campus continues to flourish.

The School had a net loss this past fiscal year of $88,678. This past March, the School hired a Special Duty Officer, to be on site while the students are present during the school day. This was a substantial expense, but the safety of our students, staff, and volunteers is a main priority. We continue to review ways to keep our campus safe.

This past November was the return of our Christmas Bazaar and it was a great success. This was brought back to our community by the work of parishioners from the Parish Advisory Council. The proceeds from the Christmas Bazaar were then spent to help make our Parish party in January a huge success.

We are so very grateful to our parishioners for their continued support of the operational needs of St. Pius X Church and School, and to our dedicated employees for their continued contributions to the life of the Parish and success in fulfilling our Parish mission. In addition, let us not forget, we thank the many parishioners who support the Church and School by volunteering their time and talents to create a vibrant Parish community, and by sustaining our Parish family with their prayers.

Yours in Christ, Rev. Fr. David Young

Unleash the GospelIn 2016, Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit wrote a pastoral letter to his diocese regarding the New Evangelization and the renewal that is needed in our Church; the title of his letter was “Unleash the Gospel”. He then convened a three-day synod with over 400 members of his diocese for the purposes of developing a road map to begin their journey of becoming a missionary Archdiocese.

This past summer, the men’s ministry at St. Pius X, “The Armory”, formed several small groups, read Archbishop Vigneron’s pastoral letter and met regularly to discuss and to reflect on its message. The pastoral letter is 40 pages long, and, therefore, it is difficult to summarize it in a few short paragraphs. However, I do want to share some of the key points contained within it in the hopes of encouraging all of our parishioners to read this fantastic exhortation (www.unleashthegospel.org) that applies to all of us!

Bishop Vigneron writes, “In recent years, the missionary nature of the Church, her deepest identity, has been lost… The signs of the times all around us are sobering; the number of practicing Catholics, including youth and young adults, is in a steady decline…The western world especially has been slowly abandoning its Christian foundations. False religions and belief systems, spiritual lethargy, fear, resistance to change and the belief that the Church is a human institution have all contributed to the crisis… But we need not fear, for dry wood is perfect for being set on fire!”

He continues, “What is needed is a complete reversal of our focus from inward to outward, to undergo a missionary conversion in our culture such that every person at every level of the Church, through personal encounter with Jesus Christ, embraces his or her identity as a son or daughter of God and, in the power of the Holy Spirit, is formed and sent forth as a joyful missionary disciple…Unless we manifest the joy of the Gospel to others, we will not attract them to listen to the good news… This missionary conversion entails a strikingly countercultural way of living grounded in prayer, Scripture, and the sacraments;

unusually gracious hospitality; a capacity to include those on the margins of society; generous service to the poor and marginalized; and joyful confidence in the providence of God... All are being summoned to engage in a new evangelization; a renewed proclamation of the good news of Christ to the people of our time.”

Bishop Vigneron reminds us that “It is the Holy Spirit who transforms Christ’s disciples from ordinary people into Spirit-filled evangelizers – the new evangelization cannot be accomplished without a new Pentecost… With eyes fixed on Jesus, we need to encounter Jesus – it is only after we have encountered him that we can proclaim the joyful message of the gospel via personal testimony… The normal means by which we most closely encounter Him is through His Church, including Scripture and the sacraments… Recognizing that the Holy Spirit blesses each believer with different charisms to build the kingdom, there can be no bystanders; the laity, ordained religious, consecrated life and our youth and young adults are called to go out and share in person to person encounters.”

He concludes, “The unleashing of the Gospel is not something we do individually, but is a communal task. If we are living as a band of joyful missionary disciples, our communal life is itself a radiant witness to the power of the Gospel… Each of us must encounter Jesus, constantly grow as His disciple, and then witness to extend the kingdom here on earth… We must pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and call upon the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Star of Evangelization, for her intercession, that the Lord may bring about an unprecedented harvest.”

Let us all pray that we as parishioners of St. Pius X and the universal Church everywhere will respond to this call to become missionary disciples, willing to “unleash the gospel” to everyone who has not encountered Jesus!
