This year our nation celebrates the 100th Birthday of the National Parks
Service. Since 1916 the American people have entrusted the care of our
National Parks to the National Parks Service. DAPS would like to join this
100th birthday celebration by spotlighting and calling to mind some of the grand
sights in Yellowstone, America’s oldest National Park.
Our Annual Non-Event Fundraiser coincides with National Parkinson’s
Awareness Month. Because this is a “non-event,” you do not have to buy new
hiking boots, book flights, or pay for food and lodging in order to attend.
Instead, you can participate by supporting DAPS with a contribution and asking
friends and family to join in the adventure of our imaginary excursion. Every
contribution is important and helps DAPS to maintain our programs without
charging participants to attend.
Giving levels for this year’s Non-Event are in
recognition of the beautiful geysers in Yellowstone.
Watch for an invitation to arrive soon in the
mail! Or go online at www.daps.us and click
on the “Let’s tour Yellowstone!” button.

April Luncheon Program:
Spotlight on DAPS
Since 1978, DAPS has been making a difference
in the lives of those facing the challenges of
Parkinson’s disease in the Dallas area. At this year’s
Parkinson’s Awareness Luncheon, we are taking the
opportunity to spotlight some of the work that DAPS
does. The following is the lineup of programs we will be featuring and the
leaders who will be presenting.
Exercise Classes for People with Parkinson’s Disease
Barb Mack holds Bachelor and Master of Science
degrees in Nursing. She is known for going the extra
mile and taking a personal interest in those in her
exercise groups. Barb says that she “feels honored to
teach yoga, voice, and exercise classes to people with
Parkinson’s and others with movement disorders since
2007.” She is married to Dr. Michael Mack and they
have five children.
In addition to leading exercise classes at DAPS
locations several days every week, Barb has accepted
the responsibility of overseeing the scheduling of all the
DAPS exercise and speech classes. This is just one of
the ways that she goes the extra mile, making sure that classes are covered
with a trained substitute any time that the regularly scheduled exercise leader
has to be out. Barb also is the leader that we turn to when we are bringing on
new exercise leaders. We ask all new leaders to observe Barb’s teaching and
then to teach under Barb’s guidance before being allowed to substitute or being
assigned permanently to a group.
Dance Classes for People with Parkinson’s:
Dance for PD®
Misty Owens, MFA, returned to Dallas after
12 years of teaching, choreographing and
performing in NYC. She danced with the
Peggy Spina Tap Company in NYC for 20
years, performing in such venues as Jacob’s
Pillow, Town Hall, F.I.T. and The New School.
While in NY, she taught at Marymount
Manhattan College, Long Island University-
Brooklyn, and the Mark Morris Dance Group
School, where she was a faculty member
teaching multiple dance styles, the Artistic Director of Student Companies I & II,
and a Founding Teacher of the Dance for Parkinson’s Disease® classes. Misty
wrote extensively about Dance for PD® for her MFA thesis and she has
presented the program at conferences in the U.S., Canada and England. Misty
regularly trains other teachers in the Dance for PD approach across the US.
APRIL 2016 · DAPS · PAGE 3
Misty’s teaching outreach includes a broad age range
from young children to centenarians. Currently she is an
Adjunct faculty member at University of Texas-Dallas,
she teaches Dance for PD classes through the Dallas
Area Parkinsonism Society, Dance for Movement
Disorders at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital-Dallas,
and she is the Co-Director of the London School of Dance
with Gwen Owens.
Speech and Swallowing Classes
Pat Warner is one of the instructors
leading several of our Speech and
Swallowing Classes. She is known for
making the classes fun and challenging.
Pat works at SpeechCare, Inc., as a
home health therapist who treats adults
and children. She helps people with
articulation, receptive and expressive
delayed language, stuttering, voice,
traumatic brain injury, and other neurological diseases.
Here is what one of our DAPS members has said about
Pat, “For over ten years Pat has been the DAPS Speech
Therapist for the Plano and Lakeside locations. Pat is a
consummate teacher! She incorporates laughter as part of
the speech therapy and is always looking for fun ways to
make us exercise our brains.”
Partners-In-Care Support Groups

We are part of a movement. A movement in our community:
Thanks to you, we are building Parkinson’s awareness and giving a voice to the over one million
people fighting the disease every day. No one should have to face Parkinson’s alone. That is
why NPF provides a community of support to give people the resources and help they need to
live well with Parkinson’s. Your participation will help us fund better research, better treatment
and better lives.
Moving Day®, A Walk for Parkinson’s, is our chance to come together and win the battle against
Parkinson’s disease. Participate by walking, stretching or doing yoga in NPF’s signature
Movement Pavilion. Together we can raise funds and awareness while celebrating the
importance of movement for us all.
Moving Day DFW appreciates the tremendous support from DAPS in helping organize this event.

Stop and listen. Do you hear it? There’s a new song
filling the air and it’s coming from a most unlikely group
of singers. The Joyful Heart Singers gave their first
performance Feb. 29 at the Trinity United Methodist
Church in Duncanville. While their performance may
not garner any music awards, their story will make
you want to shout for joy—and maybe even sing along
with them.
The 15 members of Joyful Heart met through a
Parkinson’s support group comprised of Parkinson’s
patients and their spouses. The evolution from support
group to Joyful Heart Singers actually happened quite
suddenly: Speech had a need, need had an answer, the
answer met the therapist, and the therapist saw an
opportunity which she welcomed with great enthusiasm.
Before long, these support group friends weren’t just
speaking, they were singing. Yes, singing!
The group was the brain-child of Sadie Tellez, who was
first diagnosed with Parkinson’s ten years ago. Her son,
Timothy, an accomplished musician and former worship
leader for a local church, directs the group. Their premier
performance was a “senior sweethearts serenade” where
they performed love songs from the '50s, '60s and '70s.
The performance was met with rousing applause, as well
as more than a few teary eyes.
The members have found as much joy in performing as
their audience finds in hearing them, but they’ve
discovered something more: There is power in their
voices—both as a group and as individuals—that they are
reviving. The group is excited about the opportunity to
spread joy as well as to empower others through singing.
Anyone interested in scheduling them to perform or in
joining the group can contact Sadie Tellez at
Joyful Heart Singers

What are some good resources for learning more
about Parkinson's disease?
Since April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, it's
the perfect time to identify resources available to
you and your loved one that will help you better
understand PD. Receiving the news that you or your
loved one has Parkinson's can be overwhelming. It is an
emotional time that opens the door to many questions
and concerns:
“Who do I see to handle the symptoms of PD?”
“How do I manage my PD medication regime?"
“How do I deal with all of my emotions related to PD?”
“What can be expected with a diagnosis of PD?”
In this age of the Internet, it is relatively easy to educate
yourself online. The DAPS website has basic information
as well as a list of links that can point you to many
excellent resources (daps.us/pd-facts). You can also call
the DAPS office for general information such as local
doctors who treat PD, or to have DAPS send you printed
educational material. If you are able to visit the DAPS
office, there is a lending library with a good selection of
reading material about PD.
Connecting with other people who have Parkinson's or
who care for someone with Parkinson's is also a great way
to gain and share knowledge. In addition to the groups that
DAPS has throughout the Dallas area, there are online PD
support groups. Facebook has several groups. Enter
"Parkinson's support" into the search box and a list of
groups will pop up. Another site, MyParkinsonsTeam.com,
is a new social network for people living with Parkinson's
where you can "meet" people like you. You can even sort
the members to show which ones live close to you.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
April is Parkinson’s Awareness month. This month,
DAPS and other Parkinson’s organizations are making an
extra effort to raise awareness of the challenges of living
with Parkinson’s.
This is a great time for DAPS to look in the mirror. As I
look in that mirror, the first thing I see is that DAPS has
grown. We have added new locations (McKinney and
Las Colinas); exercise, speech/swallowing, and dance
classes; support groups; and non-contact boxing and
aquatic exercise opportunities.
I am admittedly biased, but I believe we are the fairest of
them all! In the Dallas area there are some other groups
meeting some specific needs within the Parkinson’s
community. The ones that I know of are doing a good job
and I applaud and encourage them. So, why do I dare
boast of DAPS being the fairest of them all? No other
group in the Dallas area offers the range, scope, and
number of different programs and locations as DAPS.
We can be proud as we look in the mirror.
But if all we do is look at our best side, we’ve missed a
great opportunity for being fully self-aware. There is so
much more that needs to be done, and it really will take all
of us working together and doing our best. For every new
program and location, there have been many others to
which we have had to say, “We just can’t do it at this time.”
Having to say no to new opportunities is one of the hardest
parts of my job as your Executive Director.
So, during this Parkinson’s Awareness Month, please
join me and others in raising awareness and making it
possible for DAPS to continue to provide all of these
services, and to even say yes to some much-needed new
opportunities. Join us in making a generous donation
through our 8th Annual Non-Event – Touring Yellowstone
fundraiser. We have set our goals high, but I believe we
can do it! As good as we may look in that mirror, I believe
we can do better and do more to help raise awareness and
serve the Parkinson’s community until a cure is found.
Warm regards,
A message from Mike Miles

DAPS has partnered
with the Title Boxing Club
in Allen, TX to make
available the first-of-its-kind
non-contact boxing
program for People with Parkinson’s in the Dallas/Plano/
Allen/McKinney area. What started as a trial program has
met with tremendous success and interest and has now
moved into a pilot program that is being called “Free
Motion.” The program is open to DAPS members at a
reduced rate. Anyone interested may come to observe
and/or participate one time free of charge. Joining the
program requires a 3-month commitment. The cost for the
first 3 months is $299.85 paid fully in advance. The only
additional cost is for the purchase of personal hand wraps
at a very nominal fee, less than $10. After the first 3
months, anyone may continue at a special reduced rate
of $79.00 per month.
We hear great things from our DAPS members who
participate in these classes. We hear personal testimonies
about the benefits of the workouts and improvements in
flexibility and balance. But the thing that we hear most
often is that it is a great workout and it’s fun! For more
information, you may call the DAPS office at 972.620.7600
or the Title Boxing Club of Allen at 214.644.2640.
