Awareness trumps both access and ownership: collection development
for small CJK collections
Sharon Domierself-professed agile East Asian Studies Librarian
for Amherst College, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst
My chief mandate: to bridge the gap between information needs and
information sources
Start with 1st Years – Collaborate with instructors to set info lit goals
Free dictionaries can be the right fit
If you match books to their readers
Meeting their information needs does not just mean buying materials
We can save their time by providing clear guidance on appropriate tools, and statistics show our work is valued
Access is impeded if users aren’t aware of how to interpret data
Discovery tools like China Maxx provide more information than library catalogs or
online bookstores
Purchasing individual titles are much, much cheaper than using ILL.
Thanks to Amherst College Library!
I now use an iPad for both reference
and collection development
NCIKU e-books offer Chinese/English/Pinyin and Audio!
Rodoku Shojo – text & audio
Viewn: iPad app for current journals
Awareness also means sharing and learning from each other. I look forward to hearing about your
successes and challenges.
Thank you!
