This 5,660 square foot dream-come-true was made possible by generous donations from The First Congregational Church in West Chicago and the Risch-Dieckmann Family Foundation. Our focus continues on increasing the nutritional value of the food we serve and have donated. The food recovery cargo vans are on the road daily to local retailers rescuing food on or near its sell-by date – mostly produce, meats, and nutritionally dense items – accounting for over half of the food we distribute! Because this recovered food has no cost to us (other than vehicle costs), our net food cost overall is now 3.7¢ per pound! 2017 ANNUAL UPDATE: NEW PARTNERS, NEW GROWTH AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES

2017 has been an exciting and productive year for Neighborhood Food Pantries. We continue to grow our core mission of helping mitigate food insecurity in Northwest DuPage County. In the past 12 months, NFP has

grown to more than 27,000 guest visits, distributing nearly 2.5 million pounds of food to local neighbors!

We have reduced the average cost of food distributed to only 4.0 cents per pound, allowing us to feed a family of four for one month for less than $20. The cost per pound continues to come down each year as NFP recovers more food under our Food Recovery partnership with grocery retailers in our area. This partnership offers a greater variety of meats, fruits and vegetables to our guests, resulting in more than 70% of the food distributed in the last year qualifying as nutritious.

As we shared last year, in December 2016, NFP hired Heather Kash as a part-time development director. Heather has made many new contacts with area businesses, community groups and schools, improved our social media presence, and enhanced our fundraising efforts. Our Shopping Cart Shuffle 5K and HarvestFest were both taken to new levels this year, with both events raising more than twice as much as they did in 2016. We are looking forward to seeing even more exciting developments during our first full fiscal year with a dedicated development focus.

Our network of Church Partners has grown from 28 to 32 over the past year, and our Pantry network continues at 7 pantries. Family in Faith (FIF), our mobile pantry in Glendale Heights, just broke

ground this month on a new permanent pantry building, which is very exciting for both FIF and NFP. This has been a multi-year FIF project of fundraising and getting needed approvals and plans in place.

I am very grateful for your continued support. It truly makes a difference to the families we serve. I am also grateful for NFP’s dedicated pantry coordinators and volunteers and our executive staff – Executive Director Tom Norton, Operations Director Lisa Puclik and Heather Kash. And I am grateful for our dedicated volunteer Board of Directors.

If you would like to get more involved with NFP, there are three immediate areas of opportunities – join the Board, one of the Board sub-committees (Com-munications, Program or Development) or become an inaugural member of our Advisory Council Committee. More information on all of these opportunities can be found on the back cover of this report. We are looking for members with active contacts in our service area that can further facilitate development and fundraising. If you have an interest in any of these three areas, please email me at [email protected] and I would be happy to discuss the possibilities.

On behalf of the entire staff, volunteers and board of directors, thank you for your support for our mission. If you are just meeting us, for the first time, we welcome your participation in bringing food security to our region!

YEAR IN REVIEW

HARVESTFEST 2018Our 5th Annual HarvestFest Dinner Auction was held at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, with our largest attendance yet! Our event emcee, Dave Savini of CBS2-Chicago kept the evening exciting for all, with a record-setting live auction and “fund-a-cause”.

Thank you to all our volunteers and our organizing committee whose efforts made it all possible, as well as the guests who opened their hearts and wallets for our neighbors in need! Because of you we were able to raise more than $60,000 net profit to feed our neighbors in need!

Our 2018 event featured the addition of costumes, an expanded kids’ dash, and a start / finish inside Mallard Lake Forest Preserve. Our Executive Director, Tom Norton, challenged his friends to donate $1,000 and as a result ran in a carrot suit (and was the 2nd place finisher in costume!).

Thanks to the runners, the volunteers and the organizing committee who made it possible!

SAVE THE DATE for August 3, 2019– see you on the course!

Visit us on Facebook (facebook.com/NeighborhoodFP/) to view more photos of these and other events.

NEIGHBORHOOD SERVANT AWARDSThe 2018 Neighborhood Servant Awards were awarded to local families and businesses whose generosity and service has displayed an extraordinary dedication and service to their neighbors in need.

Our family recipients Sandie & John Pappanduros and Mary Ellen & Robert Quinn have reached out to our neighbors in need through consistent, monthly support for many years. We also recognized Pam & Tracy Conn of Joe Cotton Ford as this year’s business recipient. As a long-time sponsor of our annual 5K, HarvestFest and Girl’s Night Out, their leadership and commitment has led to the growth and success our events year after year, leading to greater awareness and support within the community. The gifts of time, talents, and treasure of these recipients embody the heart and spirit of a true Neighborhood Servant. We thank them for the confidence they place in NFP to be the vehicle by which they feed those in need.

OUR PERMANENT PANTRY AT FAMILY IN FAITH CHURCHIn our 2015 Annual Report we first shared our architect’s rendering of our permanent pantry at Family in Faith church in Glendale Heights. Three years later that drawing has become a reality.

On November 10, 2018 we opened our doors for the first time, with our formal ribbon cutting ceremony held on December 9th. Thank you to all the caring, compassionate donors who made it possible, as well as the hard-working and generous volunteers who will keep the pantry running for years to come!

OUR COMMUNITIES IN ACTION

GET YOUR SCHOOL INVOLVEDIncorporating a charity element into school functions is a great way to show children the importance of giving back at a young age.

Here are a few ways that local schools can make a difference for local families:

• Request donations at an annual event (concert, play or sporting event)

• Have a Coin Collection Drive• Hold a no uniform or hat day• Organize a Hunger Action Month event (Sept.)• Enter a team in our Shopping Cart Shuffle 5K

The preschool at Lutheran Church of the Master collected items to contribute to this year’s Thanksgiving baskets for our guests.

St. Francis HS choir collected canned goods as admission to their concert.

Glenbard North HS collected toilet paper as part of their Homecoming festivities. “Don’t throw it in the trees – give it to your neighbors in need!”

OUR VOLUNTEERSWe are grateful for the support of so many volunteers who support our neighbors in need.Looking for ways to make a difference in your community? Here are a few ideas:• Volunteer at one of our pantry sites.• Volunteer as one of our drivers to pickup donated food• Collect donations of food or scarce items for our pantries• Volunteer or participate in our annual Shopping Cart

Shuffle 5K or HarvestFest• Host a ‘friendraiser’: Cocktails, barbeque or other event at your home Home party event where a portion of the sales benefit

our pantries Hold a Neighborhood garage sale with proceeds

benefitting our pantries

Volunteers at our Shopping Cart Shuffle set out food for our walkers and runners.

Our volunteers at Lutheran Church of the Master keep the pantry running.

Our Food Recovery drivers help us provide fresh food to our pantry guests AND save nutritious food from filling up our landfills.

THANK YOU! Two years ago, I found myself out of work, something that was very difficult for me not only because I needed a paycheck, but because I needed something to do with myself when I wasn’t looking for work. I learned about your pantry at Immanuel Presbyterian in Warrenville, and came in to offer my services as a volunteer. I think fate must have led me there, because my first day volunteering I also joined the church as well, and quickly saw how your pantries and volunteers were serving the Lord.

I was struck by the people who came for help. They were regular families – people who didn’t “look like” they needed help. One family in particular will always stick in my mind. The dad was employed – a professor in fact – but with 6 kids they just didn’t have enough to go around. They, like everyone else, were treated as family at the pantry. After a few months volunteering, I realized that while I came in to keep busy while I was looking for work, I actually had a lot in common with the guests we were serving. Without a regular paycheck, I was missing meals. An unemployment check doesn’t go very far, and I quickly learned what it felt like to be truly hungry. So I signed up for the services of the pantry, becoming a pantry guest as well as a volunteer. Utilizing your services made me even more dedicated to help, and made me appreciate the impact your services have on the community even more. After about a year I finally found a job as a spotter at a local warehouse. I can’t tell you how good it felt to be back at work, but I wasn’t ready to leave the pantry. I continued to volunteer, to attend services at Immanuel, and newly employed I brought in groceries to the pantry whenever I was able.I recently made a move to DeKalb, as I have gotten a better job. I am no longer able to volunteer at Immanuel, but I will never forget the impact of your pantry, your volunteers, and your services during one of the most difficult times of my life. Thank each of you for your support of Neighborhood Food Pantries. You are truly doing the Lord’s work, and have made a difference in my life that I will never forget.

THANK YOU! Three years ago I began volunteering at the NFP pantry at Real Life Church in West Chicago. Shortly thereafter my husband of 13 years moved out, leaving me with no money, no job, 5 kids, a mortgage, 2 dogs, and 2 cats – I was a bit overwhelmed (to say the least). I didn’t start receiving child support for about a year, but I took odd jobs (painting, cleaning homes, work- whatever I could find). I was to

the point of losing our home and questioning where we would live. I found myself needing the services the pantry offered – I had to choose whether to feed my children or keep the lights and heat on, but Ken and Nancy always made sure my family was taken care of. They were truly concerned about our family, and took the time to listen, as they do with so many of their guests. We received fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, milk, meat, cereal…I could go on and on. Volunteering at the pantry gave me confidence, current work experience that I used on my resume, and emotional support from other volunteers and guests. My kids also got to see that we were not so bad off, and you just never know who needs a little extra help sometimes. We were not alone and this was just the beginning of a new chapter of our life. Because the pantry had allowed FedEx to place fliers for guests to find work, I started working with FedEx on Feb 25, 2015, and am now an operations manager. I have great benefits and a promising career ahead, and anticipate graduating with my Bachelor’s degree in 2019. The pantry made this horrible transition much easier, not only by helping with food, but with discounts at a local mechanic’s shop, help with utilities, Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas gifts. I think back and am amazed at the amount of help I had received from friends, family, church and the pantry.I could not have come so far without everyone’s help and I could never put into words how grateful I am that we have such an amazing resource so close.

OUR LOCATIONS

CONSIDER BOARD MEMBERSHIPLet us help you discern if board membership is a good fit for you and NFP. Our Board of Directors provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance, acting in partnership with the Executive Director and staff.
