Spelling (Arabic and English)

Test every Monday *regular formative assessments

- pass out new list on Tuesday -pre-assess on Tuesday -practice in class using Daily 5 Word Work, practice activities -assign homework practice -test on Monday -the test on Mondays should include using the words in a sentence Examples: Grade 1: choose any word and use it in a sentence – score the application of capitals and end punctuation Grade 3: write 2 sentences using any 2 spelling words Grade 6: write 3 sentences using any 3 words - KG to Grade 4 students need to be assessed in Fry words. Pre-assess in the first week. Then include necessary words in the weekly spelling lists. Assess the students again on Fry words at the end of each term to track growth. -any students scoring below 70% need to meet with you and me. We need to figure out a plan to help them succeed. Then please contact the parents to schedule an appointment. -post all grades on ALMA within 2 weeks of administering the quiz, test, classwork or homework

Grammar (Arabic and English)

*Quiz every 2 weeks *Unit test after 4 weeks *formative assessments daily

- include the unit titles in the instructional calendar - integrate grammar in reading and language arts lessons - provide practice in class - assign homework practice -provide study guide for unit tests - keep reviewing grammar concepts during the year and include them on future assessments -any students scoring below 70% need to meet with you and me. plan to help them succeed. Then please contact the parents to schedule an appointment. -post all grades on ALMA within 2 weeks of administering the quiz, test, classwork or homework

Subject Frequency Details Math *Quiz every

Friday *Unit test every 4 weeks *formative assessments daily

-All grades begin with place value and basic facts. (addition/subtraction/multiplication/division math minutes) -All grades give a problem of the day. It must be posted in the classroom. -spend about 30 minutes a week on basic math facts to build speed and accuracy -Complete all pages in the workbooks and most of the questions in the textbook (if you have one). The more practice the students have with math the better, inshaAllah! -be sure to supplement any gaps in the workbooks/textbooks - allow students to use any strategy of their choice to solve any problem – give flexibility to various learning styles as well -incorporate math games – have the students record their calculations on a recording sheet so that they are focused and held accountable for their learning -all students will have a math quiz every Friday -correct all work and differentiate instruction - conference with the students individually or in small groups – check student corrections. - students must do corrections for all quizzes and tests on a separate paper and attach to

the test -parents need to sign tests and students need to bring back all signed tests with corrections. Comprehension & Oral Reading Fluency

*Reading comprehension quizzes every 2 weeks

-“Read to Achieve”: All students must have a Home Reading Log and books to take home to read. All students must spend time reading a variety of genres during the school day – “read to self” for Daily5 - KG-Gr. 4 students must all be assessed using RAZ kids or Fountas & Pinnell. Differentiate reading instruction accordingly. - Teach close reading skills and use the strategic reading comprehension skills outlined in your resources -state the reading comprehension skills in the Instructional Calendar -any students scoring below 70% need to meet with you and me. We need to figure out a plan to help them succeed. Then please contact the parents to schedule an appointment. -post all grades on ALMA within 2 weeks of administering the quiz, test, classwork or homework

Page 12: Back to School 2018-19 Teacher Information on Academics to... · -specify writing component of ELA & Arabic (grammar, spelling list) ... *Intro Letter & Curriculum Outline 1. st

Science & Social Studies & Islamic Studies & Quran

*Quizzes every 10 days *Unit tests every 4 weeks

- occasionally you should give projects in these subject areas in place of a unit test – one per term is reasonable -give project timelines and guidelines well in advance. Help the students create questions to research (inquiry based learning) and help with research materials -science needs to be “hands on” – have a wealth of materials for the students to explore with – let’s help each other gather these materials -older grades (Grade 6 – 9) should incorporate “Genius Hour” once a week – could be Fridays -incorporate STEM (STREAM) projects – one per term would be great -incorporate the Engineering Design Process (instant challenges) – once per month? -plan a STEM night within your PLCs and invite parents for that cluster of grades - Plan to incorporate Islamic content and perspectives

Any more suggestions?

11. Book Talks- Hosted by Teachers

Amana Miski

January (planning)- February

Teachers can sign up to give “book talks”. Book talks will require participating grades to be a part of a presentation one afternoon. The teachers will share their recommended/favourite books with the students in an exciting way (sharing a mini summary, sharing their favourite character(s), sharing a powerpoint, showing a clip from the movie, and or reading a selected passage. Teachers can present multiple books during one presentation. Presenting teachers would rotate from classroom to classroom.

Some of the presented books being purchased for our library

A bulletin board (maybe in the

library) that will include the cover of the teachers’ favourite books.
