Dear St. Juliana Parents, While you might not be part of the teaching staff at Saint Juliana School, you play a vital role in the Catholic education of your child. I believe parents are the primary educators of their children, and I want to encourage all parents to continue working closely with the teachers to ensure student success. There is much excitement ahead for this new school year, and I look forward with enthusiasm in sharing this time with you. I would like to thank all the families who attended Back to School Night; it was truly a pleasure to see all of you. A big thank you to all the families that participated in the school carnival. The carnival is always a wonderful opportunity to build community with the St. Juliana Parish. Our sixth graders have returned from having a wonderful hands-on science experience at AstroCamp. As we move into a month of school, I would like to encourage all parents to please utilize morning and afternoon carpool. It is a safety concern as parents and students walk across the parking lot. Our parking lot is shared with Rosary students who have assigned parking stalls and parishioners who are looking for parking stalls for 8am mass. October is a busy month full of wonderful activities and events. Please check the school calendar for additional information. I would like to thank CLIF for their wonderful Brewfest event. This event is a FUNdraiser that is enjoyed by the parish & school community, and 100% of all proceeds are given to support St. Juliana School with scholarships and special projects. Congratulations on another successful year. Well done! I thank you for your continued prayers and support. May God bless you and your family this new school year as we continue to live our theme “Wisdom is to see the world through God’s eyes.” Sincerely, Manuel Gonzales Jr. M. A. Happy Fall! Hot Lunch is almost at the end of its second week, and the students seem very happy with the food choices. I would like to say thank you to Julianna Tapia and Rebecca Raskopf and all the workers who help with hot lunch. It takes so many “behind-the-scenes” hours to make the program run successfully. The hot lunch program helps fund AstroCamp for our sixth graders and Washington, D.C. for our eighth graders.

Progress Reports will be going home via backpack mail on Thursday, October 5. STAR Testing results for reading and math will be given out at parent conferences in November. The Jog-A-Thon will take place on Thursday, October 19. Additional information will be coming home via email and backpack mail. Cantrell make-up picture day will be held on Tuesday, October 24. Information regarding Mixed Bags and Cookie Dough sales will be coming home this month. The two fundraisers help our 8th grade students fundraise for their Washington, D.C. trip in April 2018. Trunk or Treat and the Junior High Youth Ministry Halloween Dance will be held on Friday, October 27. The school Halloween parade and parties will take place on Tuesday, October 31. The monthly theme for October will focus on being courageous. This theme coincides with October being anti-bullying month. Students of the Month for September will be awarded on Monday, October 2. The theme for September was faithfulness. Our “Problem of the Month” is below. Reminder: A single subject homework pass will be given to the first ten students to correctly answer the question. Happy Calculating! Mrs. Janet Donnelly

MONTH OF OCTOBER The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. The Feast is celebrated on October 7th. This feast was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. In the month of October, let us all consider the beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a way to get closer to Jesus and Mary.

Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us! Pope Francis’s Prayer Intention for the Month of October: Workers and the Unemployed - That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good. Family Moment Please pray a decade of the Rosary with your children on your way to school or on your way home and offer up your greatest need. October Spiritual Questions Please submit your answers to Mrs. Donnelly in the school office. The first five students in each grade level category who submit the correct answer will have an opportunity to pick a spiritual gift out of the treasure box. TK-3rd- Our Blessed Mother always leads us to whom?

4th-8th- What does the word “Rosary” mean? Corner of Gratitude: Thank you TK and Kindergarten for hosting the statue of our Blessed Mother for the months of September and October. Thank you 3rd grade and 7th grades for doing such a nice job at our school-wide Mass. Thank you Father Mike for introducing our children at the end of Mass and encouraging all of us to attend Mass weekly with our children.

Kindergarten has gotten off to a fantastic start this school year! There are currently 36 smart, sweet and enthusiastic students in our class and every day is an adventure. Recently, each child met their special 8th grade buddy and it is evident that there are many beautiful relationships in the making. It is such a joy watching the bond between the buddies, and it is hard to tell who benefits more, the kindergarteners or the 8th graders. Every week in kindergarten a special student is selected as the class “Star of the Week”. This is such a wonderful opportunity for each child to shine! Our class has a girl bear “Starbearla” and a boy bear “Starbear” that the “Star of the Week” gets to bring

home for seven days. In order to highlight our special student, the Star Student brings an “All About Me” poster they present to the class on Monday. This poster hangs in the front of the room the entire week. On Tuesday, they bring three special things from home that tells a little bit more about them. Wednesday, they share their favorite book. Thursday, a picture they would like the class to see. On Friday, our Star Student brings in their favorite snack to share with the class. Truly a magical week for each special child! It is only the beginning of the school year, and so many friendships have been formed. We enjoy learning together, collaborating with our classmates, singing, dancing and experiencing just how much FUN school can be! The Class of 2026 has an amazing future ahead of them!

It is with a joyful heart that I introduce myself. My name is Nancy Rollins, and I am truly blessed to be your child’s kindergarten teacher this year. We are going to have a fantastic year together and I look forward to many new adventures as we learn, discover and form long lasting friendships. I am excited to get to know each of my students and can hardly wait to watch them discover the joy of learning. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your child with me during their educational journey in the Wonderful World of KINDERGARTEN!

Mrs. Mari Thompson, Miss Elyse Donnelly, and Mrs. Therese Cooper are very excited to be working together with the faculty and staff to serve and assist your families. The Learning Support Team is here to help students, advocate on your behalf, and bring awareness to issues that may have an impact on classroom activities and learning. Please be reassured that all of our work is confidential. Each learning specialist provides an area of service and experience. Mrs. Thompson provides curriculum modification for processing difficulties, which can affect handwriting, attention, and organization. She supports an accelerated reading program for primary grades. Mrs. Thompson and Miss Elyse work together with students from Rosary in order to offer tutoring once a week for students in grades 3-8. Mrs. Thompson works in conjunction with Miss Elyse and Mrs. Cooper to develop documentation of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and necessary classroom accommodations. Miss Elyse provides evaluation and support to students in the area of learning assessments, social development, and behavioral modification, and individual classroom support. She provides classroom lessons on social, emotional, and behavioral issues that may impact the dynamics of the classroom, and facilitates the after school-tutoring program with Mrs. Thompson. She works as a liaison

to provide support material and information to faculty and parents. Mrs. Cooper is a licensed and certified Speech/Language Pathologist. She is available to evaluate and provide therapy for a wide range of skills including speech articulation, language development, comprehension and following directions, memory, reasoning and problem solving and social skills. She is supervising undergraduate Communication Disorder students from CSU Fullerton, who are able to volunteer their time to expand the Speech and Language Department at St. Juliana School. Services are provided in 1:1 and group sessions for qualified students, and well as classroom lessons to promote learning and social skills for all students. Part of the mission statement at St. Juliana School affirms the notion that each student can achieve his/her ultimate potential. The great philosopher Johann Goethe wrote “We should treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and in doing so you help them become what they are capable of becoming.” Each student is capable of achieving his/her greatest potential. The Learning Support Team looks forward to a successful 2017-2018 school year, working, advocating, and supporting your children.

Blessings, Mrs. Mari Thompson Miss Elyse Donnelly Mrs. Therese Cooper

Welcome back! Hopefully, you were able to attend Back to School Night and hear about all the fun fundraising events planned to help benefit our students during the 2017-2018 School Year. We heard some great updates and revelations (and in some cases, pleas!) from the generous parents who have agreed to be fundraising chairs. Their faith and enthusiasm truly inspire and call out to each of us to join the St. Juliana community to raise funds needed for our school.

So, it’s time…decide where YOU fit in and what YOU can do. The kids

love seeing their parents around campus and your sense of service will transfer onto them! The list of fundraisers in which you can take part through time and talent or donations is on Page 13. Our first fundraiser of the year was the Barnes and Noble Book Fair & Menchies Frozen Yogurt night. Through your purchases of books and frozen yogurt, the event raised $402 in profit from Barnes and Noble and $82 profit from Menchies. As a sign of gratefulness, please continue to patronize these stores. A heartfelt shout-out to Mrs. Ryan who organized this fun night! We will have another Barnes and Noble Fundraiser on December 1st and hopefully a Dining for Dollars Event. Reach out to Engelynne Gomez at [email protected] if you are interested in helping. Service hours will be provided! Currently finishing up is the Charleston Gift Wrap fundraiser. The kids are always so excited to take part in the gift wrap rallies. We hope their enthusiasm was contagious and translates to big sales! A final report on the success of this fundraiser should be available next month. A big thank you to Jenny Sherard who will be retiring her Gift Wrap Chair position this year. Her immense dedication and hard work has been a tremendous asset to the St. J family. As Jenny steps down, we welcome Monica Rosales as our new Gift Wrap Chair for next year. If you have any ideas for next year or want to get involved, please email [email protected]. Make sure to support St. Juliana Athletics by way of the Snack Shack. Come by and get some yummy snacks and cheer on our awesome A and B Teams. Go Falcons! As you can see, there are a lot of fun ways to help Parent Club fundraise for the school. Be on the lookout for more fun activities in next month’s newsletter. We are always open to new ideas as well. Email us at [email protected]. We hope you and your children have a fun and amazing 2017-2018 School Year! Coming up is the Jog-a-Thon! This has always been one of our most successful fundraisers and so much fun for all the kids. This year’s theme is “Celebrate”. Come join the fun and see the children giving it their all. Watch your email and backpack mail for details as the day gets closer. Only those who have signed up to volunteer prior to the day of the event may mark the student's lap cards. All other parents and guests are welcome to cheer the students on from the cheering section. Still Needed: Donations of $5 and $10 gift cards to be used as prizes are needed. Please send them to the school office c/o Katy Batty. We also need sponsors for the various prizes given to students. The Beauty of Adoration

Did you know that your children are visiting Jesus in the Eucharist one time a month? Eucharistic adoration is a beautiful practice in the Catholic Church that centers on the doctrine of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated host. Adoration is “time spent praying and reflecting before the Eucharist, which is placed in a vessel called a monstrance and exposed on the altar.” If you’ve never been to adoration or you’re new to it, there are some simple things you can do to help guide your time in the presence of the Eucharist. When is adoration? St. Juliana usually has adoration on the first Tuesday of the month. If you are unable to make it on that day, you can look up other parishes in the area and see what days they offer adoration. How long do I need to stay? You can go to adoration for as little or as long as you’d like. Some people sign up for a Holy Hour; while others may spend less time. Any time spent with Jesus is fruitful. How do I prepare? If you can, set aside a time when you will be able to enter into adoration with a prayerful mindset. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your prayer time and take a few minutes to enter into a place free from outside distractions. Once I’m there, what do I do? Bring all of your worries and concerns to Jesus. If your words aren’t quite there or if you don’t know what to pray about, this is a great time to say a rosary or read passages from a spiritual book. The school children bring journals with them and are able to draw pictures or write about their experience. A journal is a beautiful way to write down your thoughts and prayers and listen to what God may be saying to you. What if I don’t know what to talk about? It’s perfectly fine to sit in adoration and not know what to say. Adoration is also an important time to listen. Embrace the silent moments with Jesus. We live in such a busy world, and sometimes it’s nice to just rest in the Lord. How do I sign up? You can sign up through this link: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10COB4BAAAC2DAAFB6-october, or you can just stop in on the first Tuesday of the month. Jesus is always waiting!
