Fall, The Perfect Time to Bring in New Members

BCYC is getting ready for the coming holiday season with elves transforming the club inside and out. Celebrating with friends, new and old, is always great fun.

We have a great club — a great yacht club — with so much to offer. I looked up the definition of yacht club on Wikipedia – here it is:

‘A yacht club is a sports club specifically related to yachting. Yacht clubs are mostly located by the sea, although there are some that have been established at a lake or riverside location. Yacht or sailing clubs have either a marina or a delimited section of the beach or shoreline, with buoys marking the areas off-limits for swimmers, as well as safe offshore anchorages. On shore, they also include a perimeter reserved for the exclusive use of the members of the club, as well as a clubhouse with attached bar, café or restaurant where members socialize in a pleasant and informal setting.’

It sounds pretty cool, but BCYC is way more than that, with social events, races, traditions, cruises, fishing and most of all, relationships and building memories together. We have welcomed so many new people in recent years, and many more will join the BCYC family. Let’s finish 2016 and begin 2017 with each of you inviting friends, neighbors and co-workers to become part of our club!

BCYC debuted The Gala in September. More than just a cocktail party, seafood dinner and fundraiser, it was the culmination of years of discussions and various ideas focused on holding an event in support of the Sailing Foundation. Co-chairs, Ramsey Johansson and Rhonda Tolar, set “fun” as their main goal for the evening, because if it’s fun, members will want to attend again next year. And it was fun!

Members and their guests were greeted by officers and directors, and all were treated to a martini or glass of champagne (hosted by fleet officers and trophies committee). Las Commodoras sponsored a cork pull, and live and silent auction items were on display in almost every room of the club. Items ranged from rare wines to sports memorabilia to a custom BCYC burgee pendant, created exclusively for The Gala. Staff Commodore Mary Bacon was the very entertaining mistress of ceremonies and auctioneer, and many members’ children and Junior Board of Directors members served

courses of the dinner, their “uniforms” complete with nautical-themed aprons. After dinner, everyone kicked up their heels to popular music spun by Alex, our special DJ.

Counting the sales of all live and silent auction items, the wine cork pull, tips to the junior servers and generous cash donations made by members, as well as local businesses, The Gala raised a substantial amount for the Sailing Foundation. The evening was a great success, thanks to all who participated and showed their support. The event will return in September 2017. Mark your calendar and make plans to participate in the fundraising and fun!

(Note from the editor: What an amazing job done by Ramsey and Rhonda, and their huge committee of volunteers, in presenting The Gala. The BCYC staff was great during the planning of this event, and awesome the day of the event. Next year will be bigger and even more cool.) Photos: Connie and Ted O’Connor

BCYC’s Fall Sailing Program is in its final week after an eventful season of practices, clinics and regattas, both home and away. With 31 program participants over the last eight weeks, our dedicated sailors have been putting lots of hours into improving their abilities on the water. I would like to commend them for making the extra effort to keep practicing and competing during this busy time between school, homework and all the other activities going on.

Some notable events from the last month include the Halloween Regatta put on by Lido Isle Yacht Club, the Shadden Series for CFJs hosted by California Yacht Club, and BCYC’s 11th Annual Corinthian Cup right here at home! Special thanks to Regatta Chair Derek Johansson, Junior Events Committee Chair Ramsey Johansson, plus the many volunteers on land, as well as on the water, who made it possible. Please visit bcyc.org for results.

Looking forward, I want to encourage all of our junior sailors to continue sailing! Coming up later this month is the ABYC Turkey Day regatta in Long Beach, where they award frozen birds for trophies, then next month we have the LIYC Holiday Cup regatta right here in our home bay. Although we don’t have an official program throughout the winter season, there are still lots of events going on, which can be found on the SCYYRA sailing calendar (scyyra.org).

Fall Sailing Draws to a Close

Junior Sailing DirectorCameron [email protected]

Fall has kicked off its journey and with it comes one of the best times of the year for the sport of sailing. With this new season, the mild California climate makes racing all day out on the water enjoyable. Temperatures are still nice, yet sunburns and sluggishness, while still needing careful attention, can be put to rest for the most part.

BCYC junior sailors always move into high school sailing with relative ease, and this year is nothing short of a BCYC sailing frenzy. For the Corona del Mar High School sailing team, several sailors, including myself, Justin Coburn, Laurel Foster, Riley Foster, Max Mayol, Cameron Wood, and Lucas Wood earned spots on the roster. At Mater Dei, Sarah Politiski and Caden Wheeler are sailing strong, and the Sage team includes junior board member Darcy Chung.

High school sailing promotes friendly rivalries between schools, similar to that of junior sailors representing their yacht club. Teams spend a lot of time together at practices and weekend regattas, and an interesting aspect of high school sailing is our chance to bond, especially during team racing. In team racing, each and every sailor’s reliance on, and support of their team members proves essential for any success their school hopes to achieve.

Overall, whether team or fleet racing, BCYC junior sailors have already shown their commitment to the sport of sailing at their respective high schools. And much like the fall season, our sailors have begun the school year strong, ready and eager to interact with everyone they meet on the water.

It’s been a Great YearBefore our thoughts turn to the holidays, I wanted to acknowledge what a great year BCYC has had, and how fortunate I have been to be associated with what I consider the finest group of member volunteers and staff. They have exceeded all expectations whether on land or sea. I feel privileged to have been able to witness the extraordinary efforts that each and every committee and their volunteers have put forth, done for one purpose – so that all of us can enjoy being part of the Friendliest Club on the Bay. Our staff has worked equally as hard to make sure every event, regardless of the venue, met or exceeded all our expectations.

On page two of The Masthead is a listing of our fleet officers, committee chairs and senior club staff. When you see them at the club, or at an event, please thank each and every one of them for all they do on our behalf. As for the committees, this is the time of year when chairs are reaching out to recruit members. They would welcome your participation.

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of long-time member, Dick Stone, and his initiatives to raise funds on behalf of the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion to get these Marines, who are defending our freedom, home for the Christmas holidays. We have all received his annual request and I know many of you contribute to your own worthy causes. I would like to raise your awareness to this special need. If it were not for Dick and his tireless efforts, many of these men and women would be stuck in some unwelcoming place rather than with their families. For those of you who have contributed, thank you, and if you would like to contribute, please contact the BCYC club office or Dick Stone directly.

Freshwater Angling

Angling

[email protected]

One of the beautiful things about fishing is that there are so many choices regarding where to fish, including the ocean, lakes and rivers. Depending on the venue, anglers can then plan their choice of tackle and bait, based on whether fishing for marlin or trout.

Kristy and Director Bill Parr shared their tale of a recent trout fishing trip in the eastern Sierra Mountains.

“This summer we joined friends for an annual camping/fishing trip to Mono Hot Springs area, a tradition dating back 50 years that has grown to include several generations. Boasting some of the best trout fishing in this part of California, your choices include Florence Lake, Edison Lake, Bear Diversion, Bear Creek and our personal favorite, Ward Lake. Ward Lake has been dubbed “the fish market” because of its consistency in providing a catch, and it didn’t disappoint this time. It takes a short stroll around the lake through some woods, thickets and boulders to get to the fishing rocks. From there, it’s an easy cast to the middle of the lake, but the catch typically happens when reeling in and the bait or lure sinks just off the rocks. Within 20 minutes, Kristy scored two five-pound rainbow trout using 8-pound test and pink PowerBait on a treble hook. Bill, using the same set-up with a lure, caught mostly logs.”

Thanks to the Parrs for sharing this really great freshwater fishing story! The only thing better would have been for Kristy to be kissing her fish. Send me your fish pictures, kissing and not kissing your catch, for use in an upcoming edition of The Masthead.

The Gala - this was a very special event because junior members and members of the Junior Board of Directors helped serve the food, with the help of the BCYC staff. The Junior Board members who served included Justin Coburn, Riley Foster, Laurel Foster, Abby Hampton, Jake Johansson, TJ O’Rourke, Christopher O’Rourke, Cameron Wood, Lucas Wood, Lukas Zinn, as well as other juniors from the sailing program and the membership. Everyone loved the added fun that the Juniors brought to the dinner service. There were so many amazing volunteers supporting the event, with Rhonda Tolar and Ramsey Johansson taking the lead. A special thanks to the officers, board members, staff commodores and committee chairs – it was awesome to see so much support. Next year will be even better!

Heading to the Finish Line…

Sail Fleet CaptainPaul [email protected]

As most racers know, the last mark rounding, or last jibe to the finish line, is a welcome point in the overall race, since it means the hard work will soon be over, and the post-race party can begin.

This month, we will party hard after the AOCYC Fall Finale Nov. 12 …and again Nov. 20 after day one of the Hot Rum Series. PHRF and Harbor 20 racers will sail in both races and are expected to fill the club afterwards, just like Taco Tuesdays. Rumor has it that Rhonda Tolar is planning the Hot Rum party, so expect a wow!

In December, we will celebrate again. Dec. 3, post-race award festivities will recognize the 100-plus sailors from across the U.S. who participated in Gary Jobson’s Fantasy Sail. And on Dec. 11, we will celebrate day two of the Hot Rum Series, the official last race of BCYC’s 2016 race calendar.

The 2017 Race Calendar is complete and should be published on the AOCYC website in a few days. As in past years, we’re making a few changes to improve on the actual racing. We can also expect that post-race partying will continue to expand.

Do you sense a theme here? Yes, it is certainly about racing for the glory, but it’s also about the post-race fun, where everyone has the opportunity to enjoy themselves, regardless of their finish position. Race your sailboats. Enjoy the time on the water – enjoy the post-race festivities!

Cruising Into 2017

CruisingLauri and Secy Steve [email protected]

Avalon was our last cruise for this year. We enjoyed a floating cocktail party Friday night; a big thank you to our cocktail party hosts! Saturday morning, we enjoyed our annual Mini Golf Tournament and dinner at Mi Casita. If you want to know the winner of the coveted Konapelsky Trophy, you can find out by attending the Annual Awards Night, Nov. 5. The weather cooperated – we all love Avalon this time of year. Check out the club website photo gallery for pictures of this cruise and past cruises too!

The last Cruise Committee meeting of 2016 will be Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. Bring your calendars and please consider joining us as we discuss NEW cruise ideas and NEW locations for the 2017 schedule. We value your participation and input regarding club cruises,; they are a great opportunity to make more friends and get to know each other better.

See you on the water!

The Most Wonderful Time of Year

ActivitiesKristy Parr/Kari [email protected] [email protected]

It’s the most wonderful time of year and also a very busy time for the Activities Committee. Thanks to the efforts of event chairs Susan Barden and Linda Ritchie, club members had a rip-snorting, boot-scooting good time at the Western Roundup, Oct. 29. Chef “Cooky” Georges Rapicault and his culinary team created an amazing chuck wagon spread complete with hand-carved tri-tip and roasted corn with all the fixins. To the music of Steve Woods, Nancy Bryant made sure that even the greenhorns had some fancy moves on the dance floor.

Hot on the boot heels of that event, BCYC honored our own at Awards Night. Thanks to everyone who helped polish, place and present the awards. In the mood to decorate? The Holiday Design team is in need of many hands (and strong backs) on Nov. 20 and 21. All are welcome to help out with any amount of time you can give. Every year the team fills the club with holiday cheer. Juver Garcia and Mario Nieto make the outside of the club as festive as the inside. Thanks to their efforts we have been winners in the Christmas Boat Parade Ring of Lights competition two years in a row! Care to make it three?

We swung into 2016 with the retro sounds of The Blue Delilahs at our first Lounge Night in April. So many of you danced the night away to their swinging renditions of 40s, 50s and 60s classics that we are bringing them back for dancing and listening pleasure on New Year’s Eve!

We are already making plans for our 2017 activities, but we need your ideas and input. Please come join the Activities Committee – we meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Did you know that the Wine Dinner on Nov. 19 will feature Ferrari-Carano Winery, a top Sonoma County vintner?Did you know that member dinner reservations for the Christmas Boat Parade, Dec. 14-18, will open Wednesday, Nov. 2?Did you know that Santa’s Champagne Brunch will be Dec. 11?

It’s been a crazy, great summer. I have had the great pleasure of sailing with great people and traveling to new and exciting places, competing in too many regattas to list, so here are my top six.

J-70 North Americans, Houston, TX. - 5th out of 40 competitorsI sailed this regatta with Southern Californian Bruce Golison. Galveston Bay is shallow, leading to a lot of chop and relatively murky waters. One night, a storm passed and we watched the lightning crash over the bay. It was exciting, if not a little loud.

Cleveland Race Week, Cleveland, OH – 2nd out of 13 competitorsYes, Cleveland was a highlight. The regatta was great fun and everybody involved was helpful and happy. The first day, we were treated to 20-plus knots of wind and big waves. As I was sailing in the J-70 class, the downwind sailing was fast, fun and wet. The great thing about lake sailing is the fresh water.

Melges 20 Act 3 in Riva De Garda, Italy – 5th out of 50 competitors This is my favorite venue on the planet. We were able to spend a week on this amazing fresh water lake at the base of the Alps. While the sailing was amazing, the highlight may have been the 15 pounds of Buffalo Mozzarella that I consumed. There are tall cliffs on both sides of this long, deep lake creating a breathtaking backdrop to the racecourse.

Morgan Cup, Newport, RI – 1st out of 8 teamsThis was my initiation to team racing. Each team has three boats

and you race against another team. All six boats are scored to determine which team wins. There is a double round robin, so every team races every other team twice. Taking three days to get all the races in, team racing is definitely some of the most exciting racing I have ever done. There is so much going on and a lot of strategy going on at all times. Of course, sailing in Newport, Rhode Island is always a treat. I am hooked and have already booked my next team racing event.

Melges 20 Worlds, Scarlino, Italy – 4th out of 56 competitorsThis wonderful end to our Melges 20 season culminated under rolling hills in waters that sparkled like diamonds. A world championship is always special and this one was no different, with many Americans doing very well.

Big Boat Series, San Francisco, CA – 3rd out of 7 competitorsI love sailing in San Francisco. This year didn’t disappoint, with drama, big wind and strong currents. I sailed in ORR-B class with the Time Shaver team from Southern California. One highlight was a particular reach leg – we averaged nearly 17 knots for 10 minutes. With some smaller boats in our class, we were nearly finished before they rounded the last mark. In many races, we didn’t know how we did until we got to the dock.

Next up is the Etchells North American Championships in San Francisco. I am looking for another tiring week of beating into cold water!

The Process for Electing BCYC Directors

BCYC’S Board of Directors consists of 11 voting members, 10 of whom are elected to serve a two-year term, with the Junior Staff Commodore designated as the 11th director. There is one exception to the two-year term rule. The term of the director serving as Rear Commodore expires at the end of that director’s Rear Commodore year, and that director is re-nominated for a new two-year term. This Bylaw provision is intended to ensure continuity of leadership in the positions of Vice Commodore and Commodore.

Our Bylaws provide for the nomination of candidates for at least one and one-half times the number of vacancies for election as directors. The Nominating Committee is charged with delivering a list of nominees to the Secretary on or before the fourth Saturday of September each year. The Secretary then posts the list of nominees on the bulletin board in the clubhouse and has a copy mailed to each member on or before the second Saturday of October.

Additional nominations may be made by petition, signed by at least twenty (20) voting members and presented to the Secretary to post the petition on the bulletin board on or before the last Saturday of October. Only those nominated by the Nominating Committee or by petition are eligible for election.

Directors are elected by written ballot. Ballots list the names of the nominees for director, give members an opportunity to cast one vote for each vacant seat and provide a reasonable time in which to return the ballot to the club. Cumulative voting is not permitted – no member may cast more than one vote for any single candidate.

Ballots are accompanied by short statements on each nominee’s background and the reasons the nominee would like to be elected as a director. Statements submitted by existing directors also include the nominee’s record for attendance at regular board meetings.

Ballots are mailed to voting members no later than the fourth working day of November each year. They must be prepared so that the identity of the voting member is anonymous when ballots are counted, but the member’s right to vote is verified. The club utilizes a “three envelope” system to meet this requirement. Each ballot mailing includes: (1) a blank envelope that directs the member to place one ballot inside; (2) a second envelope with a signature space for verifying voting member identity; and (3) a postage-paid envelope addressed to BCYC and identifying it as containing ballot materials. All ballots cast received by mail on or before the third Saturday of November are deemed duly cast.

By the following Tuesday, the Elections Committee meets to count the ballots and certify the results to the Commodore. A plurality of votes cast is required to elect a Director. If two or more candidates for one office receive an equal number of votes, the retiring Board of Directors meets to break the tie by majority vote.

Awards, Fantasy Sail, Club Events I encourage each of you to attend Awards Night on Saturday, Nov. 5. This event provides the opportunity to formally thank the many member volunteers for their efforts throughout the year. In addition, we recognize the racing accomplishments of members, and the infamous Chanticleer award is given to a deserving member for the biggest goof on the water this year.

The Fantasy Sail regatta will take place at BCYC Dec. 2 and 3. This very prestigious event brings together the top LLS fund-raising teams from yacht clubs around the United States. Hosted by Gary Jobson, internationally renowned sailor and racing commentator, sailing will be on go-fast racing boats on Dec. 3. As was done so spectacularly during the recent Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, I know you will make our guests feel welcome during their brief stay.

Upcoming events include the Nov. 10 Antique Roadshow luncheon, the Nov. 19 Winemaker Dinner, featuring the Ferrari-Carano Winery, and the annual NO turkey 2 for 1 dinner Nov. 25. December’s Holiday Prime Rib Night is scheduled for the 1st of the month, the Annual Meeting is Dec. 4, and the Christmas Boat Parade, Dec. 14-18. The last night of the boat parade is also BCYC family night – Santa Claus will be on hand that night to greet everyone!
