It has been a groundbreaking year. So much has gone on to designate Baldwin as a progressive model for learning. We have been recognized by our New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, Regent Roger Tilles, the National PTA and the Green Cleaning Award to name a few. Personally, I can share that other superintendents, education professionals and community leaders both locally and in other parts of the country, have recognized our work from instructional advances and learning space innovations, to the level of instructional support which is demonstrated through our commitment to providing professional learning opportunities to our faculty and staff. Over the course of the year, I have met many people who have heard about the amazing work going on in Baldwin, some from surrounding communities and others from farther away, who were struck by our ability to “walk the talk” and to advance our learning opportunities for students where rigor, interest, innovation and relevance are high and appropriate. There is so much excitement in the air. Our community has shown their gratitude and the wider community has acknowledged the hard work and commitment. So, thank you to everyone. Each member of our Baldwin family has a role to play in this exciting work. Never has there been a better time to celebrate the outstanding work of our Baldwin public school system. Many of us will continue our work over the summer months, so check in periodically to stay updated. My best wishes for an enjoyable, well- deserved summer break to all. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in September when we get to continue our journey together! Warmest Regards, Shari L. Camhi, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools Baldwin UFSD

Dear Baldwin Family, I’d like to thank you for the support and commitment you have shown our students in the 2016 - 2017 school year.

NY State Education Commissioner Elia and Regent Tilles visit Baldwin High School

A testament to its innovative programing, top New State Education officials toured Baldwin High School this past March. New York Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia and New York State Board of Education Regent Roger Tilles were greeted by our very own “Sweet Adelines” and met with Baldwin School District’s Superintendent, Dr. Shari L. Camhi along with a panel of high school students, where they learned about Baldwin’s pioneering and unique college and career preparation programs, including the Academic Academies.

Baldwin’s Academies are small learning communities that teach rigorous academic subjects within an industry context. The goal of the program is to provide students with a multitude of learning experiences to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the challenges of the emerging global community. The Baldwin High School program currently offers Law & Government, Medical & Global Health Science, New Media, STEM & Engineering, and Business & Entrepreneurship, which are available to students grades 9-12. Academy electives and extracurricular opportunities provide a career focus to existing curriculum and enhance the development of skills required for the chosen profession.

During the visit, Commissioner Elia mentioned that “these are the types of programs I would like to see expand to public schools across the state” and said that “programs like these provide opportunities for students to connect with the professional work environment early on.”

The morning was also spent discussing college preparedness, an initiative that is important to both the Baldwin School District and visiting education officials. The day concluded with a tour of Baldwin High School, where Elia and Tilles heard from students in several settings and saw how students are being prepared for higher education in specialized classrooms.

From there, the two joined Dr. Camhi for a forum on college readiness at Molloy College, organized by the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education. Representatives from more than 70 Long Island school districts along with numerous local college and university officials attended this presentation which unveiled results from several years of study to evaluate which factors will predict college success.

“The connection between these studies and Baldwin’s ac-ademic programs were readily evident. These programs really help to personalize learning and prepare students for a career path,” said Dr. Shari L Camhi, Superinten-dent, Baldwin School District. “Regardless of a students’ interest or their passions for learning, there is something here in Baldwin for them.” Dr. Camhi also added, “I am honored that Commissioner Elia and Regent Tilles took interest in Baldwin’s commitment to its students, our in-novative programmatic offerings, and how we are striv-ing to prepare all of our students for a successful future.”

Baldwin Schools Recognized by the New York State English Council

The New York State English Council has recognized Bald-win Schools for its educators and exceptional programs. Baldwin Middle School’s Aiden Byrne and Brookside Elementary School’s Elaine Monahan both received its 2017 Educator of Excellence Award while Plaza Elemen-tary School’s Team ORCHID Newsroom was chosen as a Program of Excellence.

The Educator of Excellence award honors those teachers who are leaders in the classroom, collaborators with col-leagues, and mentors for those teachers new to the profes-sion. Dedicated to their craft, both Mr. Byrne and Mrs. Monahan exceeded the qualifications of this award.

“I would like to congratulate both Mr. Byrne and Mrs. Monahan on behalf of the entire Baldwin School Dis-trict,” said Dr. Shari L. Camhi, Superintendent, Baldwin School District. “These teachers have gone above and be-yond to implement best practices and challenge our stu-dents to become skillful readers and writers.”

Programs of Excellence are defined by the NYS English Council as outstanding English/Language Arts programs that are unique and effective, while offering creative opportunities for students and teachers. The NYS Eng-lish Council described Team ORCHID Newsroom to be “clearly of exceptional merit and innovation,” and that the “nature of the program touches the lives of many and contributes a lifetime of learning.”

Baldwin School District Named one of the “Best Communities in the Nation for Music Education”

Baldwin School District has been named as one of the “Best Communities in the Nation for Music Edu-cation” by NAMM (The National Association of Mu-sic Merchants Foundation) for 2017, one of only 527 around the country to receive this honor. The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teach-ers, administrators, parents, students and communi-ties who have made music education part of the cur-riculum. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to music education. These districts and schools set the bar high in offering students access to comprehen-sive music education, opportunities, and programs.

Links between student success and music education have been demonstrated by brain researchers in mul-tiple studies; the Baldwin School District builds on that connection between music and academics. Many par-ents are choosing to live where schools are committed to music education as part of the curriculum and note that the quality of the music program is a determining factor when deciding on schools. A typical comment heard is, “Although we could have chosen a different school and community, we opted for the one that of-fered a superior music program.” Baldwin School Dis-trict is very proud to be recognized in this classification.

Baldwin High School Hosted Multi-Faith Festival In May

Baldwin High School hosted an all-day Multi-Faith Fes-tival on May 5th, themed “Promoting Tolerance Through Education,” for our 9th grade students. Artifacts were on display to paint a picture of many religions, while representatives of each religion were on hand to answer questions about faith and tradition. These representa-tives from various religious backgrounds, including Baha’i, Brahma Kumaris, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Judaism, and Sikh, discussed many aspects of their beliefs, practices and origins. The information gained from the hands-on experience aligns to and supplements the 9th Grade Global History Curriculum.

Volunteers from each religious faith set up a table of artifacts, then students sat with volunteers and asked questions and learned about the faith being presented. After approximately eight minutes the students rotated to another table and started a new conversation. Students took notes to later write a reflection for their homework.

The Long Island Multi-Faith Forum (MFF) is a joint ini-tiative of the Long Island Council of Churches and the Auburn Theological Seminary. The MFF’s goal is to pro-mote social change for increased tolerance through inter-faith understanding and cooperation among the diverse religious traditions that exist on Long Island. Founded in 1994, the MFF promotes understanding among the di-verse religious heritages of the region through its “Build-ing Bridges” educational programs, multi-faith festivals, educational publications and videos.

John Buglione Named “Distinguished Teacher of the Year” by the Harvard Club of

Long Island

Baldwin High School teacher, John Buglione, has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2017” by the Harvard Club of Long Island and was honored at the club’s annual university relations luncheon in April, along with 11 other Long Island teachers.

“This award honors teachers who transform lives,” ex-plained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island chair of the distinguished teacher selection com-mittee. “Devoted teachers, such as Mr. Buglione, offer students their outstanding expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children, these teachers shape the young minds that mold the future of our country.” Mr. Buglione began teaching in the social studies depart-ment at Baldwin Senior High School in 2000. Through-out his tenure with the district, Mr. Buglione has taught social science courses at every level, including AP U.S. History and a college-level sociology elective.

When Mr. Buglione learned of this award, he said, “I have had the privilege and pleasure of working in the Baldwin community for the past 17 years and feel grateful and indebted to all of the supportive indi-viduals who have helped me grow as an educator.”

Dr. Shari L. Camhi, Superintendent of Baldwin School District, said “we are extremely proud to have such a high caliber teaching staff at Baldwin High School. With teachers such as Mr. Buglione at the helm, Baldwin students are given the opportunity to learn at a high level and reap the benefits of this exper-tise, knowledge and passion for the subject matter.”

Mr. Buglione graduated Suma Cum Laude from Queens College with a double major in history and sociology, and was the NYS recipient of the James Madison Memorial Fellowship issued by the United States Congress in 1997. He completed his gradu-ate work at Columbia University Summa Cum Laude with a Master’s Degree in American Studies.
