Joshua 24. 14-24 (abbreviated)

Joshua said to all the people, 'Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfu1ness. And if you beunwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you willserve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.'

Then the people answered, 'Far be it from us that we shouldforsake the Lord; for it is the Lord our God who brought us andour fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house ofbondage; therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is ourGod.'But Joshua said to the people, 'You cannot serve the Lord; forhe is a holy God.' And the people laid to Joshua, 'Nay; but wewill serve the Lord.' Then Joshua said to the people, 'You arewitnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, toserve him.' And they said, 'We are witnesses.' He said, 'Thenput away the foreign gods which are among you, and inclineyour heart to the Lord, the God ofIsrael.' And the people saidto Joshua, 'The Lord our God lR will serve, and his voice wewill obey,'

It fonows, my&i~ that ?'II' I,ower nat1D'e'" DO claim uponus; we are not obqed to live on that level. Ifyou do so, youmust die. But if by the Spirit you put to death all the basepUl'llUits of the body, then you will live.

For all who are moved by the Spirit of God are sons of God.The Spirit you have received is not a spirit of slavery leadingyou back into a life of fear, but a Spirit that makes us lIOIlIl,~blingus to cry 'AbbaIFatherl' In that cry the Spirit ofGodJOins with our spirit in testifying that we are God's children'lUld if children, then heirs. We are God's heirs lUld Christ'~fenow-heirs, ifwe share his sWfcrings now in order to share hissplendour hereafter.

Galatians 5. 16-25Ifyou are guided by the Spirit you will Dot fulfil the desires ofyour lower nat1D'e. That nat1D'e sets its desires against theSJ?irit, while the Spirit fights against it. They are in contlictWIth. one another so that what you will to do you cannot do.But ifyou are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

Anyone can see the kind ofbehaviour that belongs to the Idwernature: fornication, impurity, lUld indecency; idolatry andsorcery;q~ ~ con~entious t~~, envy, fits of rage,s~ amblbons, ~eDSIons, party mb'igucs, and jealousies;drinking bouts, Orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned youbefore, that those who behave in such ways will never inheritthe kingdom of God.

But the harvest of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, fidelity, gentleness, and self-control. There isno law.dealing with such thinp as these. And those who bdongto Christ Jesus have crucified the lower nature with its passionsand desires. If the Spirit is the source of our life, let the Spiritalso direct oW' course.

Jesusanswered, 'In b'IIth, in very truth I teU you, unless a man hasbeen bom over again he cannot see the kingdom ofGod.' 'Buthow is it pOll8ible', said Nicodemus, 'for a man to be born whenhe is old1Can he enter his mother's womb a second time andbe born l' Jesus answered, 'In truth I teD you, no one can enterthe kingdom ofGod without being born from water and spirit.Flesh can give birth only to flesh; it is spirit that gives birth tospirit. You ought not to be astonished, then, when I teU youthat you must be bam over again. The wind blows where itwills; you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where itcomes from, or where it is going. So with everyone who is bomfrom spirit.'

Luke 24. 45--endThen Jesus opened their minds to understand the script1D'e8.'This', he said, 'is what is written: that the Messiah is to sWferdeath lUld to rise from the ~ead on the third day, and that inhis name repentance bringing the forgiveness of sinB is to beproc:1aimed to aU nations. Begin from Jerusalem: it is you whoare the witnesses to aU this. And mark this: I am sending uponyou my Father's promised gUt; so stay here in this city untilyou are anned with the power from above.'Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and blessed themwith uplifted hands; and in the act ofblessing he parted fromthem. And they retumed to Jerusalem with great joy, and spentall their time in the temple praising God.
