Editor’s note: The Chanhas-sen Villager publishes an occa-sional column by Barb Hone of the Arts Consortium of Carver County. The Pillars of the Arts project recognizes and honors the people throughout Carver County who have promoted, sup-ported, and contributed to all expressions of the arts over the years and continue to do so.

Waterfowl painter, sporting dog artist, photographer and videographer, Carl Melichar makes his home in rural May-er, along with his wife, Maria, and four children. His home is located on an old histori-cal farm, homesteaded in the middle 1800s.

Carl’s studio, Countryside Art Gallery, is on this farm – actually a 1914 granary, refur-bished and decorated. This gallery features more than 100 taxidermy ducks – most sea ducks and all four of the North American Eiders.

Carl was born in Hutchin-son on a dairy farm. He loved the outdoors and it was obvious from his earliest years that Carl was born with natural artistic talent. By age 12 he was fascinated with sketch-ing, drawing, and painting. At 14, he enrolled in a cor-respondence course with the well-known Art Instruction School, which was the begin-ning of his education in the fundamentals of art. Other famous graduates from this school include Charles Schulz and two renowned wildlife artists: David Maass and Les Kouba, who also happens to be Carl’s second cousin and a great mentor. Later, Carl also attended classes at the Min-neapolis College of Art and Design.

By the 1970s, he had devel-oped a special interest in Alas-kan Sea ducks. Carl traveled to Alaska on at least 20 occasions

hunting, photographing and videotaping sea ducks from Kachemak Bay to Kodiak Is-land with stops at various St. Lawrence and Aleutian Islands. Carl’s writings and photographs from these trips have been the subject of sev-eral national magazine feature articles. Part of his Alaskan adventures included getting a study skin of a Spectacular Eider for a Federal Duck Stamp entry.

Since the 1970s, he has ex-hibited at home shows, sports shows, the Minnesota State Fair, the Minnesota Renais-sance Festival, National Pheas-ant Fest, Ducks Unlimited and many other events. Along the way Carl found he had a special talent for painting dogs. He studied them extensively and in just a few years he painted more than 50 dog portraits. In each case he would make prints and sell them all around the Midwest. For a small addition-al charge he would “remarque” the print. A “remarque” is a small original hand-painted duck or pheasant usually on the corner of the print and signed by the artist. Carl has perfected this ability. This artistic style also coincides with his attitude about making his work easily available to his customers.

Arboretum plansphoto seminar

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum will present “Full Exposure: Images to Change the Future,” a photography symposium featuring pho-tographers Daniel Beltrá and Molly Steinwald. The lecture-style symposium will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the Arboretum’s Oswald Visitor Center.

Planet Earth faces daunt-ing challenges of overpopu-lation, overconsumption of resources and climate change — all contributing to the decline of plants and animals around the globe. Photographers Beltrá and Steinwald visually docu-ment these changes, each in their own way telling a story of environmental degrada-tion — even as they convey a message of hope and restora-tion. Born in Spain and now based in Seattle, Beltrá has spent the past 20 years of his career bringing into sharp focus the story of our planet. He has documented several expeditions by Greenpeace to the Brazilian Amazon Rain Forest, the Arctic, the Southern Oceans and the Patagonian Ice Fields, among many others.

Steinwald is an acclaimed photographer and environ-mental educator. She is associate director of science education for Phipps Conser-vatory and Botanical Gar-dens in Philadelphia, a PhD candidate in zoology (Miami University), a researcher and speaker. She is active in many national and global environmental and photogra-phy organizations.
