The exhibit is part of the up- coming celebration of 150 years of statehood in 2008. Carver County’s own Wendelin Grimm was chosen from 2,760 nomina- tions to be included because of his development of the first winter-hardy alfalfa. Wendelin Grimm, his wife Ju- lianna and their three children arrived in Carver County from Baden Germany in 1857. Here they homesteaded 160 acres just north of Victoria, in what is cur- rently known as the Carver Park Reserve. Grimm brought with him a box filled with seed of what he called “Ewiger Klee” (everlasting clo- ver). Grimm carefully planted the clover and harvested seeds from the plants that made it through the cold Minnesota winters. The surviving seeds were planted in the spring and the process con- tinued for the next 15 to 20 years, ending up with a winter-hardy seed. Grimm’s neighbors began to take notice that his cattle appeared well-fed and followed Grimm’s lead. Grimm’s winter-hardy alfalfa was officially acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Agricul- ture in 1903, 10 years too late for Grimm to see the results of his hard work. The USDA also credits Grimm Alfalfa as the source for all modern varieties of alfalfa, now grown on more than 25 mil- lion acres in the United States. The seed is considered the basis for the development of the Midwest dairy industry and the most important development in Minnesota agriculture until hy- brid corm was developed in the 1930s. In 1924, more than “700 farmers, seed dealers, relatives, university scientists, newspaper reports and locals” gathered at the Grimm Farm to erect a monument to Grimm. With the importance of Grimm and his contribution to farming history, it is almost unbelievable that Grimm’s Chaska brick home was almost lost. Grimm’s first farmstead was acquired by the Hennepin County Park Reserve District in 1962 as part of Carver Park Reserve and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. In 1993, after determining that the state was losing historic agri- cultural sites at an alarming rate, the Minnesota Historical Society identified the Grimm Farm as one of its highest priorities and received funding for a re-use study and the initial stabiliza- tion of the farm house. During the restoration pro- cess, the building was in such a poor shape that one contractor walked off the job, declaring the house could not be saved. It is with perseverance that the project continued and the home was restored with the help of nu- merous supporters of Grimm. By 2001 with the help of state funding, private donations and the Hennepin Parks system, the restoration was complete. The property is currently being used for agricultural programs and special events. Oct. 23 the Carver County Commissioners presented great- great grandson Clarence Kelzer a proclamation honoring Wendelin Grimm for his contribution to the agriculture industry not only in Carver County but in all of Min- nesota.
