Term 3 Week 6
29th August, 2018 THE PENINSULA PRESS
Year 5’s from 4 local primary
schools have a wonderful
day in High School!
THE FIVE THINKING HABITS OF EMOTIONALLY RESILIENT
PEOPLE
A workshop by Julia Souter
You are probably aware that the Year 10 students at
Barrenjoey take part in our purpose-built Resilience
Program. We are now in our second year of this very
important initiative. Unlike many emotional health
programs, which are purchased straight ‘off the shelf’ our
approach was to develop one with the help of Julia
Souter and Liz Whyte so that it had a local feel and is
adaptable to our needs.
Essentially Julia’s workshop on resilience has 5 ‘Thinking
Habits’ that will be presented and discussed in smallgroups through out the term.
Whilst it is targeted towards Year 10 it is just as relevant for all young people and as such I
believe it important that our parent community is also cognizant of the habits we are promoting
with our younger community.
Each habit is a series of prompting questions that enable the discussion to be directed by the
students’ responses. I have included some of the prompting questions below so you can have abetter idea of the discussions.
1. QUESTION EVERYTHING
• Where does this thought, feeling or belief come from?
• THINK CRITICALLY! Be aware of the power of other people’s ideas on you.
• We are all influenced by others & culture in general (social psych)
• How we think of ourselves, is shaped first by our parents and then by everyone else.
e.g. Instagram. Q: Have you ever posted a bad picture? Why? Why not? Who started this?
e.g. Being good at maths is important. Q: Why? Who decided? And if it’s so important why do
we pay teachers and scientists and nurses so badly but movie stars and models and sports
stars so much?
e.g. Being skinny – why? Who decided? (cultural)
Q: What is influencing your thinking? (social media, other people’s opinions (peer, family,
school, social ‘norms’) Don’t drink the cool aid! Advertising / curated social media. Designed all
to sell you something (either real or aspirational).
Q: Are you judging yourself by standards YOU really believe in or based on what OTHERS tell
you about yourself? Should you trust them? Maybe what they say tells you more about THEM
than you. Maybe you shouldn’t take it personally? (At any rate check in first)
Think: how does thinking this way affect my feelings? Be aware - Is this true or useful?
• Tattoo a ? on your hand for a week! Think to oneself ‘really?’ when people tell you
things about what they think (NB. the difference between ‘thinking’ and ‘feeling’, because you don’t want to question someone’s feelings).
2. REMEMBER THAT EVERYTHING CHANGES
• Change is the only constant and is inevitable in life. This Too Shall Pass. Make this your
mantra.
• Every cell in your body completely new after 7 years; you’re not even the same person, so
why assume your moods, thoughts or opinions will not change?
• Learn to let your moods pass like the weather .. hold on.. trust in change because you KNOW
it to be TRUE and in fact you are already resilient because if you are here it means you have
survived plenty of change (and stress) this far..
e.g. Who was I at 5 and 10 and now? (interests, style, looks, friends?)
Q: How did that change occur? Change happens even if you DO nothing!
e.g. Think of something you used to hate doing that is now over.
Q: How did you get through it? How did it end? Reflect. (think of a happy time – did this last)?
• ‘TTSP’ (This Too Shall Pass) tattoo on hand for a
week or have it always visible.
How to adopt this into your daily life?
How to adopt this into your daily life?
3. BE YOURSELF & BE KIND TO YOURSELF
• The ONLY thing you are in control of is how you respond to something!
• So the only thing that can be more consistent (given that things are always changing) is
YOUR behaviour and integrity. Even if it feels like everything else is happening TO you.
• So how do you do this? Trust your instincts! BE YOURSELF! e.g’s of people doing / not
doing and what happens & how you feel about it) Takes real courage! (not to be a sheep).
• “Self-esteem is the ability to see yourself as a flawed person and still hold yourself in high
regard” (i.e. essentially I’m ok)
e.g. Who are you? Q: Is this based on what your friends / parents think of you? Now re-examine
that list. What are they missing? What do you know that they don’t?
e.g. Each person to think of one bad thing they’ve done. Q: Was there a consequence? How did
you feel? Does it still matter now? Would it have been fair or useful to judge yourself forever more
on that thing you did? (given it doesn’t matter now)
How to adopt this into your daily life?
• Flesh out your “who am I?” list privately at home.
• Practice talking to yourself kindly (even if it’s silly
at first – hey, never mind)
4. KNOW THAT EVERYONE SUFFERS
• Everyone suffers pain and loss – no avoiding it – this means you are never the only one going
through something hard.
• The problems occur because people hide it and pretend to be ‘fine’… “it’s all good” (rubbish!)
Therefore we start to feel like it’s ‘just us’ which makes us feel alone and weird and wrong.
Q: How do people hide their truth? Deliberate pretence or unconscious (i.e. anger for
sadness).
Q: Why? (social media nonsense) & for boys especially there is a hyper-masculine culture
(teaches boys to shut down emotionally)
The antidote? Telling the truth – back to integrity, be real. Life is absurd and has no meaning
so make of it whatever YOU want. Play the game and take as much from it as you can
because it’s also short!
How to adopt this into your daily life?
Look at a newspaper every day - the world is a messy painful place.
Imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes for 1 minute. Foster empathy
– this fosters compassion. (imp for others but also for self). When you
consider yourself a part of a much bigger planet you can see we are all
struggling in our own way.. makes us compassionate and feel less
isolated / take it less personally.
5. FIND YOUR TRIBE
• Genuine friendship will keep you sane.
• Social connection is as important as diet and exercise for a healthy and long life.
• Before you can find your tribe, you have to know who YOU are.
e.g: Be picky! Q: How should we choose our friends?
Q: How do you know who your real friends are?
How to adopt this into your daily life?
Get really good at knowing yourself. Then
look around and start considering whether
you are compromising any part of yourself
to ‘fit in’ with your current tribe.
Are there people you wish weren’t in your
tribe? What is it about them you don’t like?
This gives clue as to YOUR values.

Well done Sarah.
NORTHERN BEACHES ART AWARDS NIGHT
Year 7 student Lorcan Brondum won the Honourable
Mention for 10-14 age-group, which is the top prize for the
10-14 Category! Along with $400. Well done Lorcan.
The judges described his artwork as…
A wonderful and whimsical portrait, honest and direct. A
very strong and lively sense of character and personality,
achieved by the use of intense colour and very actively
painted surfaces. It has a lovely sense of who is behind
painting the work and the relationship between artist and
subject.

YEAR 5 SPORTS SPECTACULAR 2017
Last Thursday, Barrenjoey hosted Year 5 students from Avalon, Bilgola Plateau, Montessori and
Newport Public Schools for our Sports Spectacular Day.
The day is run by Barrenjoey Year 10 PASS students who train, coach and oversee ten modified
sports which included hockey, basketball, netball and boxing.
A very big thank you to all of the PDHPE staff for their time in preparation before and during the
day, as well as our Year 7 and 8 students that assisted throughout the day.
Specifically aimed at assisting the transition from primary school to high school, the day was
thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was great to see the Year 5 students learning new skills, participating,
meeting new friends and having fun, all in the spirit of Respect, Effort and Challenge.
SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH PRACTICE EXPEDITION
Last week twenty two Silver Duke of Edinburgh students, along with four international students,
three Gold DOE students, Miss Attard and one very brave parent Janelle Amet, successfully
completed their first Canoeing trip for the Adventurous Journey component of the Award. The group
started on Thursday at Wisemans ferry and finished on Saturday at Peats Ridge.
The first day saw the group battle bravely against the tide and the wind to our first campsite. We
set up camp quickly before the anticipated rain and one student discovered they don’t mix well with
horses. Exhausted and keen to get into our warm beds and out of the wind, we had an early night.
The second day saw higher spirits and smiles across all faces as we were paddling with the tide!
Even the sun decided to show its face a few times and the wind AND rain held off! The scenery
was amazing! Jagged red cliff faces protruding out of the water and we saw copious amounts of
jellyfish and huge Sea Eagles hunting. We arrived at the second campsite in the early afternoon
and after trudging our gear out of the canoes and through the mud we set up in an isolated clearing
in the bush that we shared with a greedy kookaburra.
Before the sun set the students had to show off their canoeing skills and demonstrate a capsize
drill in the water! Many squeals were heard as the students willing jumped into the icy water and
worked as a team to turn the canoes up the right way. We then were able to warm up and dry off
next to a roaring fire under the stars and an incredibly bright moon.
The third and final day saw us paddling yet again with the tide, no wind and surprisingly no rain!!!
Hurrah! As it was a Saturday we shared the water with many boats and hitched a ride in their wake.
The group returned to school around 4pm on Saturday, sad that the trip was over, excited for a
warm shower and cosy bed and full of the best memories!
A big thankyou to Janelle Amet for giving up her time to come along and to all the students who
helped each other, kept spirits high and made this an unforgettable experience. The qualifying
canoe trip for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh is in December in the Kangaroo Valley and the
excitement is already brewing. Louise Attard
