The Story of Building Bridges While serving on a mission trip in 1999 in Lawrence Tavern, Jamaica, the idea came to me of a way to help serve the remote communities. More medical, dental, optical and pharmacy services to help all adults and children so all can have a healthy life.

I brought back this idea to the NKC Rotary Club, District 6040 as an international project; it was voted on and backed by them and thus began “Building Bridges Dental and Medical Mission”. Our first year was in 2000 and we had 18 volunteers. Building Bridges of hope, friendship and service became an early theme “Service above Self” became our motto.

The team grew fast and soon our volunteers over the years were filled by people from California, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee, and included dentists, doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, eye techs and many support staff of around 60 members.

In 2014 our group included 8 health care providers, 5 dental teams, 7 RN’s, 3-eye techs, 3 pharmacy teams, 3 diabetic specialists and 30 support staff to serve 3 clinics per day. Our goal is to serve 2,500 patients each year and in 2014 we had:

508 dental patients - 800 teeth removals 490 dental patients receiving fluoride treatments

2,961 free medicine given 70 hours of personal diabetes training Grand total of 2,675 patients served.

Behind each figure is a personal story of pain and suffering relief. A young teenager, who since 8 years old has been adopted by several of our team members, another young girl who had cancer and was helped to fight this awful disease and is happy today because of our work. Middle aged man who depends on the team to provide him with Parkinson medicine each year.

We are delighted to be taking to 2 PETS (Personalized Energy Transportation) this year. One for an adult and one for a child. Your prayers are coveted for the 2015 Medical Dental Mission trip - February 14-23 and for myself, along with Kimberly Pukay and 48 others.

Building #4

Before the congregation of Barry Christian Church was able to enjoy the present structure for worship, there were several drawing proposals by architects, and also many changes in the construction once it began. Below are two illustrations that show the development of the structure as we now know it.

Remember When…

Share a memory you have of your time at BCC.

There are a few ways you can do this:

1. Write down your memory and give it to Kimberly Pukay by email [email protected] and it will be collected into a book that can be shared with everyone on April 26, 2015.

2. We will have a moment for memory where anyone can share a memory (5 minutes or less please) with the congregation at either worship service or preferably both. Please see the sign-up sheet on the table in the church foyer.

3. Share photographs from past Barry events to be shown in a slide show and shared in the memory book.

This picture appeared in the

August 28, 1965 Kansas City Star,

and illustrates an early concept of

the Education Building and the

proposed sanctuary. The building

in the foreground was a proposal

to convert the church building

then in use into a chapel. The

photo has been graphically

enhanced for clarity.

sanctuary during construction. The

laminated ribs are in place, as well as

the rafters, and the brick façade has

been attached to the block walls. The

steel framework shown would of course

be the opening for the stained glass.

Page 4 A message from our Family Life Director – Jim Frentrop

One of my favorite gifts my wife gave me is a photograph of us when we were dating, framed with an engraving that says “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing”, from I Thess 5:11. This has been an inspirational scripture for me in my career as a therapist and in ministry. There is an impressive amount of research that shows the healing power of a healthy, supportive, and encouraging relationship. For example, a person entering therapy to work through an emotional issue has a much greater chance of success if he or she feels a genuine caring connection with a therapist. In fact, the trusting and caring relationship with their therapist is more important than the therapist’s education, experience, theoretical basis or methods of therapy. Who would have imagined that something as simple as a

relationship could be such an important factor for healing? There are similar studies on physical healing that indicate if a patient has a strong belief he or she will recover from some physical ailment, or heal from a surgical procedure, they stand a better chance of really healing, despite the nature of the ailment. The phrase “mind over matter” actually does have scientific basis.

I think early Christians knew the value of social relationships, and I think Jesus was a great role model for teaching this. I recently read an internet article on the Biblical basis of small groups. Jesus was a devotee of small groups himself. His group consisted of 12 pretty ordinary men, mostly blue collar folks in their 20’s. Jesus knew how to plant seeds, so he built into a few men a strong foundation. Most of his ministry time was spent with these folks. He taught them how to love one another, how to teach others, and how to heal others in God’s name. He ate, talked, slept, walked, sailed, fished, and prayed with these guys. I believe he fully understood the need for human fellowship and support.

Early churches were simply small groups that met in peoples’ homes. They gathered to support one another and share their love for Jesus and for each other. “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people” (Acts 2:46). And…their numbers grew (next verse).

So, how can we at Barry Christian Church follow the example Jesus set for us? I propose we consider the “small group” model that Jesus used. He used his small group of disciples to plant seeds. So can we! Not only could we plant seeds, we could all use support from time to time. Pastor Bob described the “4 D’s” in today’s sermon (death, divorce, depression, and…well I forgot the 4th “D")…but who has not struggled with one or more of these at some point in life? Most of us have experienced loss in the death of a loved one, or experienced divorce in our families, if not our own then someone close to us. And then there’s trauma, which may not start with a D but is certainly a life-altering event that requires significant attention and healing.

I have found the social group to be a very powerful place. A place to feel acceptance. A place to heal. A place to grow. A place where even us introverts can open up and share, and be loved…unconditionally. Just as Jesus taught us to do. My proposal is that we establish some small groups at Barry. Call them “support groups”, or “care groups”, or any other name. A place where we can connect, share personal experiences, gain strength and hope, tell our stories and learn from others, laugh, and perhaps cry, together. The key word here is “together”. I have received a few phone calls recently asking if we have a support group for those who are struggling with a divorce. My response has been that we do not…yet. The key word here is “yet”.

What other issues do you struggle with, that you could receive the love and support of a small group? I would love to hear from you! If you have ideas for a small group…or if you have a need that a small group could help with…please let me know. Send me an email at [email protected] or call the church office. Please let us know how your church help you. In peace and Christian love, Jim

Tower of hope for the Hope House

Once a year we focus on collecting items for the Hope House. Hope House provides a

safety net to those suffering from abuse in the Kansas City metro area. Weaving

together safety, support and hope helps give victims the ability to start a new life, free

from abuse. Their needs are many, but right now they really need toilet paper, paper

towels, diapers and baby wipes. We will be collecting until February 22th.

Barry Christian Church has partnered with other local churches to support Family Promise of KC North. Family Promise provides housing, food, work and assistance programs for KC north families in need. They are housed at the churches and volunteers feed them, provide transportation and tutoring, among other things. The funds provided help with budget counseling, parenting classes, insurance, banking consultation, legal assistance and community placement help. As with other organizations, Family Promise KCN is in great need of financial assistance. Family Promise KCN has asked us to pass along a new program they are starting for collecting funds on a regular basis. They are looking for 300 people to pledge $20/month for a total gift of $240 for the year. You can provide this by 1) sending a personal check to PO Box 11206, KCMO 64119 2) Paypal donation through their website 3) online banking check that can be set up through your financial institution and 4) ACH donation through the form provided on the table in the foyer **don’t forget to include a voided check. If you would be interested in supporting this organization, they would be very grateful! If you need more information about volunteering to bring food or hosting for an evening, please see Betty Rega or Kimberly Pukay.

You can still sign your card on Sunday

Lenten Midweek Study & Care Groups

Lenten suppers and reflection are held in the Fellowship Hall each Wednesday during Lent be-ginning February 25 through March 25 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A light meal is served and we have an informal time of study and reflection.

This year, we are asking our congregational care groups to help provide the meals.

Romans 12:10,13,15 "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.... Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality....Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."

I Corinthians 12: 12,24-26 "The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body.....But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it."

The goal of Barry Christian Church Care Groups is to provide a structure that will nurture relationships, meet members' needs, and help us to be a more caring congregation through:

fellowship

support of each other

providing opportunities for members to live their faith by serving others

Even though each group will be unique based on the individuals in the group, some ideas for caring for each other are:

Getting to know one another through get-togethers at least quarterly

either at the church or at members' homes

Making phones calls to check on each other

Preparing meals for/and or visiting with those who are ill

Providing transportation to church, if needed

Making a caring call where there is illness or death.

Contacting those who are absent from worship more than a couple of Sundays in a row.

Sending cards when there is an occasion to celebrate or an illness or death in family

Praying for each other.

Lending a caring ear to the lonely, sad, concerned and anxious

Each group consists of two elder or deacon coordinators who will help with organizing, but it expected that each member will take an active part. If you were assigned to a group but do not wish to participate, please let your coordinator know. Or, if you know of others who would like to be added to a group, please let us know. Members were assigned primarily by zip code--with a few exceptions. We are still formatting the groups, and more names will be added to each group. There are 10 groups.

Please do your part to make Barry Christian Church a loving, caring church!

Come and enjoy an evening of reflection February 25. See you at 6:00
