Most, If not ail, missionar ies have interestingstories to tell as they relate their experiences inadapting and relating to the people in a previouslyu nf ami li ar c ul tu re . O ne such story involves a missionary w ho w en t to a culture where witchdoctorswere thought to possess superna tura l powers .Their claims were proven by their ability tohandle poisonous snakes without being harmed. To c ou nt er ac t th e witchdoctors hold on th e superstitious people, th e missionary mastered (very carefully ) the same feat. The people began to realizethat th e witchdoctors ha d no special spiritual

powers, and t he d oo r was opened for the missionary to teach the people of the power they could allpossess as Christians.

The people were Nigerians. The time was 1956.The missionary was Don Baughman. For 20 yearsDo n and hi s w if e M ar ia nn e have c o m m it te d t he irlives a nd t he ir family to t he wor k of West AfricanChristian Mission in Niger ia .

The Baughmans arrived in Nigeria in September,1956, to join a mission work pioneered by Royand Barbara Goldsberry a year earlier. The tw ofamilies combined their efforts , concentrating primarily on establishing churches in which newChristians could fel lowship and worship together

and on training young men to assume leadershippositions in these and other churches. 1960 Walter Coble, founder of Gospej Broad

casting Mission GBM), suggested that a Searchthe Scriptures program be broadcast in Nigeria.Baughmans accepted the offer and soon the program was on th e air. Besides preparing each broadcast, they were responsible for a Bible correspondence course offered in conjunct ion wi th th e pr ogram. A literature distribution program was begun, offering tracts a nd pr int ed t ex ts of radio messages. In October, 1973, Don summarized th e results ofradio evangelism in Listen, GBM s newsletter.

Listeners write fo r th e correspondencecourse which we offer an d ask help in knowing God better. Presently, we are using aBible doctrine course. Before th e end of th ecourse, many of t he m w ri te to say they areunderstanding God's message. This is thefruit of th e preaching of th e Gospel and it isof great consequence. . . .Today there are educators, doctors, l awyers , soldier s, eng inee rs ,civil servants , s tu de nt s, e tc ., w ho w rit e to us(in English). We also receive letters in theYoruba language (the language of th e area of

southern Nigeria where the Baughmans work)an d we offer th e correspondence course inYoruba. One of o ur evangelists grades th e lessons an d answers those who have problems inYoruba.

Nigeria's rigorous climate forced Roy and Barbara Goldsberry to look f or a no th er field of service. In 1963, they l ef t Afr ica and, after a year offurlough, went to Italy in 1964. In 1967, Walteran d Edna Smith joined th e Baughmans in Niger ia .

Evangelists in all th e congregations ar e in steady contact with Baughmans an dSmiths, and preaching services (s imilar to revivals)ar e c on du ct ed b y th e missionaries once or twice ayear in each congregation.

    Medical care is also o ff er ed b y th e Baughmans.Both local Chris t ians an d ones from th e E a s td ep en d o n th e Mission to meet their medical needs .N o n - C h r i s t i a n s in t h e a r e a w h o ar e u n a b l e t o m ee ttheir ow n n ee ds a re a ls o h el pe d by th e Mission.
