Principal’s Message– Jabba
Some sad news this week on
the passing of our little
green frog
‘Jabba’.
Dear Parents, staff and students, It has been a relatively short week for me after being struck down by a dreaded kinder virus. That probably
serves me right after mentioning last week that I never get sick! It was a timely reminder that we all need to
take care during this cold season and that ensure we do the simple things like washing our hands. Being
home also made me reflect of how easy the desire to get back to school can overshadow the need to
consider others. So I encourage all our community to ensure they take the necessary time to firstly get better
and secondly to consider others before returning after a virus.
Some sad news this week on the passing of our little green frog ‘Jabba’. Recently, some important medical
assistance was needed to help Jabba, and we did the best we could to help him. Thank you to Frau Schmelzle
and Tanya McKendry and family especially for all your help and support. I know Jabba will be missed but
fondly remembered by our community.
On a brighter note, the BSPS movie night took place on July 28 and was a major success. Thank you to our
Parents’ Club who do a terrific job in organising and running such events all of the students. BSPS is definitely
a better place with such contributions. I think we also should acknowledge Kam our cleaner who quietly
achieves and supports the school throughout the year. I would like to also pay special thanks to Olga Kustova
and Smart Digital Australia for their work and sponsorship of the event.
Finally, a note will go home shortly requesting families to inform the school if they are not intending to join us again next year at Bayswater South. This will help with our planning and enrolments for 2018. Have a great weekend. Jayson Williams Principal
This week’s Oscar was presented to - Years 3-6 for their great movie night behaviour.

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-
Provide care and be a friend
Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to
Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)
Help a child sort through a problem or an issue
Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)
Connect with parents as the need arises
Refer a child to other professionals
Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Regards Bronwyn Upton SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

From Our Academic Captains
As the Academic Captains for 2017, we are excited for the upcoming School production ‘Couch Potatoes’ at Karralyka Theatre! All the students and teachers have been working hard, practising and making props ready for the night. Many parents have volunteered their time to help write scripts, choreograph songs, organise and make costumes and design props. Thank you very much to these people! Some of the programs you can look forward to are: Discover Australia, Octonauts, The News and Seamstraße (Sesame Street). This year, due to increased demand, we are performing three shows: Thursday 17th of August at 7PM, Friday 18th of August at 11AM and 7PM. Book your tickets now at: http://sa2.seatadvisor.com/sabo/servlets/TicketRequest?eventId=100909706&presenter=AUKARRALYKA&venue=&event=&version ! Students will need to come to school on Friday morning and will be bussed to and from Karralyka and will be ready for pickup after 2pm.
Just a reminder that the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge closes on the 8th of September. Students in Prep – Year 2 need to have read or have had been read 30 books, and Year 3-6 students will need to read 15 books. Good Luck! Earn and Learn is Back! This week we had to say good bye to our much loved Green Tree Frog “Jabba”. During the
last holidays he accidently swallowed a glass pebble, which was at the bottom of his tank.
This prevented him from eating and he had surgery to remove the pebble. Despite our
best efforts, unfortunately he passed away a week later. We would like to thank Brendan
the vet from Warranwood Veterinary Centre for his excellent care for Jabba. A very spe-
cial thank you goes to Dylan McKendry, his Mum Tanja McKendry and Dylan Russo, our
frog monitors, for their amazing dedication and care for Jabba over the last 2 years. Jabba
has been lucky to have you look after him. Thank you!
Jabba came to join the other animals in the school’s Science Program in 2005 together
with a little female frog. He was given to us by the Science department of Lilydale High
School. In his 12 years at our school, Jabba helped teach hundreds of students about am-
phibians and the important role frogs have in our ecosystem. Students enjoyed holding
him and watching him catch crickets and woodies. He escaped a few times and was found
in the smallest of spaces (between CD’s in a CD rack). The cleaner turned the vacuum on
after school, Jabba thought it was another frog croaking and answered, hence we were
able to find him every time. Many families and teachers enjoyed looking after him over
the school holidays.

Parents’ Club News
Last Friday night Parents’ Club hosted our first ever ‘Movie Night’ and what a night it was ! 145 students attended across the 2 sessions to watch Smurfs 2 and Daddy Day Care. Students were able to purchase popcorn, drinks and lollies from the candy bar to enjoy throughout the movie. They enjoyed the popcorn so much that we sold out of the 300+ bags that we had. Thanks to Metro Cinemas in Boronia for allowing us to enjoy real movie style popcorn for the night ! Our special thanks go to Olga Kustova, one of our BSPS parents, for assisting us to put the night together. Olga was a wealth of knowledge and led the way coordinating the legalities of hosting such an event. Our thanks also goes to Smart Digital Australia for sponsoring the equipment for the night. The picture and sound quality was amazing. Now I think we just need a bigger hall to host a much bigger night !! As always, thanks also to the Parents’ Club members that helped on the night and behind the scenes preparing in the weeks lead-ing up. Thank you to Tim and Ethan for assisting with the setup and pack up of the equipment as well.

Production 2017 FAQs
What is the BSPS School Production?
A theatrical experience, which allows all students to explore aspects of their Inquiry learning through the Arts, in a professional facility. It is an opportunity for each child to shine and perform for their families and friends.
How do I purchase Tickets?
You can buy them online, from Friday 21st July, 4PM at:
http://www.karralyka.com.au/Theatre/Touring-and-Community/Bayswater-South-Primary-School-2017
Please note that the theatre charges a $3 booking fee when you buy tickets online (any amount of tickets can be purchased in one booking). Alternatively, tickets can be purchased at the Karralyka Theatre with no booking fee.
Do all students perform?
Yes, the production links together many elements of the students’ curriculum (Inquiry, Performing Arts, Visual Arts etc.) and the expectation is that all students participate in all performances.
Why are we having a Matinee Performance?
Ticket sales in 2013 and 2015 were very strong with near full-houses over two performances. In addition, our school numbers have grown significantly. Also, a matinee allows more grandparents and younger children to attend. The starting time of 11:00am enables us to transport the students to the theatre in time for the performance and to return them to school for the usual 3:30 pick-up and after-school activities.
What are the pick-up and drop-off arrangements?
Students will be transported by bus to and from the theatre on both days; a payment and permission form will be sent home early next term. Parents will need to organize transport to the evening performances with students required from 6:30pm – 9:00pm each evening.
Will there be a DVD?
Yes. One of the performances on the Friday will be professionally filmed (costellovideo.com.au) and DVDs available for $25. Delivery about one week after the show. Order forms will be available next Term.
Will there be a staff item?
Mmmmm. Maybe. Watch this space…
Kind Regards,
Linton Roe [email protected]
