Bikur Cholim Presents Rabbanit Yemima

Mizrachi in TorontoThis past June, Bikur Cholim hosted special guest speaker Rabbanit Yemima Mizrachi. She captivated an audience of almost 700 women at Shaarei Shomayim as they listened to her lively presentation.

Women from across the spectrum of Jewish life came together to hear this dynamic speaker, who left the group both motivated and inspired by her beautiful words of Torah.

Her explanations of the roles of our four imahot, matriarchs, and their relevance to our lives today gave much material for each participant to contemplate and internalize.

The lecture culminated in a dramatic moment, as audience members were asked to close their eyes and daven silently for themselves and others.

Another opportunity to listen to this famed lecturer was offered at two beautiful luncheons. One was held at the home of Yael Mammann Beigel, as an expression of gratitude to Bikur Cholim for the support and services provided to her family member, Michal bat Aziza ע"ה, during a critical illness. The following day, Aviva Eisenberger, a volunteer at the Sunshine Club, graciously hosted a beautiful luncheon in her home to help raise funds for Bikur Cholim programs.

The Sigler Family Donates a Wheelchair-Accessible Bus to Bikur Cholim

Bikur Cholim is delighted to announce that Shevi and Shlomo Jacobowitz, Shaindy and Moti Seidenfeld, Aviva and Moshe Sigler and Nikki and Binyamin Sigler have generously donated a 10 seat wheelchair-accessible bus in loving memory of their grandmother, Mrs. Lily Gartner ע"ה, Leah bas Avraham.

The bus is important because it will help Bikur Cholim alleviate social isolation and loneliness. In addition, Bikur Cholim will be able to provide transportation on a weekly basis for errands, scheduled on Thursdays. Mondays will be dedicated to entertainment, fitness and cultural excursions.

Pickup and dropoff locations, and a detailed schedule will be announced. Look for information in the Community Link and other Bikur Cholim publications.

Bikur Cholim speaks for everyone who will benefit from the bus when we ex-press tremendous gratitude to the Jacobowitz, Seidenfeld and Sigler families for their appreciation of the needs of seniors, and for their kibud av v’em. What better way to honor their beloved grandmother, a true force for good.

From Our PresidentDear Friends,

The mitzvah of Bikur Cholim is a com-munal responsibility, and one we take seriously. Bikur Cholim Toronto has a proud tradition of sixty years of serving the elderly and vulnerable in the com-munity. Over the years, we have ma-tured into a social service organization that addresses the complex needs of many other sectors of our community.

Bikur Cholim provides services to families in a variety of crises and ensures that no one in need is without support and resources.

Perhaps a neighbor, friend, or even a member of your own family has received our meals in hospital, rides to medical

appointments, or benefited from other services and care from Bikur Cholim. If you or a loved one is in hospital, please let us know so that we can be helpful.

Please give as generously as you can so that we can continue to deliver our critical services.

In the merit of your support, may Hashem grant you and our community good health, good will and unity in our endeavours.

Ktiva Vechatima Tova, Leshana Tova.

Bikur Cholim — Chesed Happens Here

Bikur Cholim is connected with thirty-five homebound people who are elderly or ill. Each one receives nourishing home-cooked food for Shabbos, prepared especially for him or her by a volunteer cook. Each cook prepares the food in her own kitchen, and includes challah for all the meals.

The same cook prepares food for the same person, and the same driver delivers the food weekly, creating a meaningful connection among all.

The cooks learn the food preferences of the recipients, and further enjoy the satisfaction of knowing they have provided a taste of Shabbos to another. The recipient, in turn, is embraced by the love and support of a member of the community.

No two recipients are the same, but one example is an elderly man living on his own. He has two married daughters living out of town, who cannot support him either financially or logistically. His cook has been offering him the warmth of Shabbos in a package for more than eight years.

Unexpected benefits come back to the cook as well. One remarked how special her cooking has become for her entire family, as it has brought new mitzvos into their home. Her children have become pen pals with the recipient, and every week the driver brings letters to and from. In addition, the cook has started sending weekly Shabbos meals to her grandmother, as she decided if she was cooking for someone she didn’t know, she should cook for her own grandmother as well.

Thank you to the following suppliers and individuals who have generously supported Bikur Cholim throughout the year, helping to make our important work possible.Able Home Health Care, All Time Party Goods, Chocolate Charm, The Chocolate Mousse, CMP Power Washing, Creative Bag, Graphics Gallery, Greyhound-Hill, Grodzinski Bakers,

With our sincere thanks to Dr. Bradley Strauss and his administrative assistant Katherine Wright.

Each week they host families of patients in hospital at Sunnybrook in their offices.

Osteoporosis, Calcium and Vitamin D(From an article by Harold N. Rosen MD, Assistant Prof. at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.) Article reviewed by Dr. Dahlia Nahon.

The suggested daily dose for older women is approximately 1200 mg of calcium and 1,000 units of vitamin D, and for younger women, 1000 mg of calcium and 800-1,000 units of vita-min D. Calcium recommendations refer to elemental calcium, not cal-cium carbonate: 1250 mg of calcium carbonate contain only 500 mg of el-emental calcium.

at least half of the suggested amount of calcium should come from dietary sources. Supplements may have more adverse effects than dietary sources. Good sources of cal-cium are milk, yogurt, hard cheese, cottage cheese and ice cream. Dark green vegetables, some nuts, breads and cereals also provide calcium. These contain less calcium, however, so that more would have to be con-sumed to meet requirements, and calcium absorption from these foods is variable.

The cheapest form of supplemental calcium is calcium carbonate. This is best absorbed with meals, however, while calcium citrate, though more expensive, can be taken apart from meals. Calcium supplements over 500 mg per day should be divided over the day to obtain maximum ab-sorption.

Vitamin D is available in fortified

milk, and also from natural sunlight. Due to the use of sunscreen, and also because observant Jewish women tend to cover up more of their bod-ies, vitamin D synthesis in their bod-ies can be blocked. Thus, vitamin D supplements (preferably vitamin D3) are advised. Vitamin D can be tak-en in one daily dose, with or with-out meals, as it is easily absorbed. nonetheless, since it is fat-soluble, Vitamin D will be even more readily absorbed when eaten with some fat (i.e. not with 0% yogurt).

Multivitamins generally do not pro-vide enough vitamin D or calcium, so specific supplements of these are rec-ommended. total intake of calcium, whether dietary or by supplements, should not exceed 2000 mg per day.

when it comes to v itamin supplements, more is definitely not better. An excess of calcium supplements (not dietary calcium) has been linked to kidney stones, and in some studies to an increase in cardio-vascular disease. Also, calcium supplements could interfere with the absorption of iron supplements and thyroid hormone, and therefore should not be taken together.

As always, discuss your requirements with your physician.

Memo From Dr. Jeremy GilbertYom Tov: A “Sweet” New Year

As Rosh HaShannah approaches, we must balance our enthusiasm for the delicacies on our table with their associated unwanted effects, such as weight gain, high sugars, and elevated cholesterol. As opposed to planning a big “DIET” after Yom Tov, I suggest incorporating a healthy lifestyle that can be applied throughout Yom Tov and beyond.

Moderation is the key. This time of the year is all about discipline (learning Torah, davening, tzedakah and diligence in performing mitzvos). By applying this discipline to your diet, a great sense of accomplishment can be achieved.

Exercise is also fundamental to a healthy lifestyle. Try to incorporate 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 days per week. This is not an easy task; however, by making it a priority there is a greater likelihood this will be achieved.

Although we may be motivated to make lifestyle changes, it is often difficult to do this alone. Try doing the exercise with a family member or friend. Speak to the rest of the family about having some healthier choices on the table.

If you have diabetes, you may require changes in your medications around the holidays. Insulin adjustments may be needed to address higher sugars from bigger meals. When fasting, some medications may need to be adjusted/reduced or temporarily stopped. It is worthwhile to meet with your physician to prepare properly.

I would like to thank Bikur Cholim for all of the wonderful work that they do and to wish the entire community a happy and HEALTHY, HEALTHY New Year!

Jeremy Gilbert, MD, FRCPC, is an endocrinologist practicing at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

Dos and Don’ts When a Friend Faces CancerMost of us would like to reach out to a friend who has been diagnosed with cancer, but we may feel embarrassed or not know what to say. Words that are a sincere expression of concern, and wishes for a refuah shleima, will always be appreciated. The same goes for sincere offers of help.

With that in mind, the following are some guidelines.

Do ask questions-find out what your friend needs from you.

Do let your friend take the lead. If humor is a coping mechanism, share a laugh.

Do be upbeat. In Judaism we believe as long as there is life there is hope.

Do visit and wish refuah shleima and pray for your friend. Your visit will re-move 1/60th of her illness.

Don’t struggle to find the right thing to say. Just speak from your heart and let her know you are there if she needs you.

Don’t say “Call me anytime you need something.” Rather say “I made you a pot of soup. I’d like to drop it off on Thursday at about 2pm. Would that be convenient?”

Don’t share your own stories of ill-ness. Discussing your illness tends to minimize the experience of your friend.

Don’t discuss your friend’s strug-gles with others. She may feel com-fortable discussing her illness with you, but may want to keep her illness “under the radar.”

New Initiatives 2015Each week before Shabbos, dedicated volunteers, coordinated by sara hasenfeld, phone members of our community who are homebound or ill. The wishes for a gut Shabbos give the flavour of Shabbos to all. Ten minutes of your time would make a world of difference to another.

On Tuesday evenings, teenage girls from our high schools, mentored by Miriam Kamenetsky, bake cookies and cakes in Yenta’s Kitchen. These baked goods are included in the Shabbos meals delivered to patients in hospitals. Their work is made easier and more efficient by the industrial mixer in the kitchen, donated by the Tylman family.

This year, volunteers sherryl steiner and esty Yeres, together with a group of shul representatives in Thornhill, have created The Golden Girls to serve senior women in their neighborhood. natalie Froom graciously hosts The Golden Girls in her home. The program takes its cues from The Sunshine and Friendship Clubs, generously hosted by Julie Kaplan and naomi Kutner, respectively. Thank you to Judy Gestetner for hosting the annual Garden Party, and to leah Yunger for hosting the annual Purim Party.

Bonnie silver has generously sponsored The Shabbat Candles project in memory of her aunt, Adele Faust—Aidel Zlata bat Yehuda ז"ל. The project provides appropriate electric Shabbat candles for candle lighting for patients in hospital for a year. Yasher koach for bringing the light and warmth of Shabbat to so many this year.

Our Community PartnersBikur Cholim partners with other community organizations such as Chai Lifeline, Circle of Care, ECHO, Hatzoloh, Tomchei Shabbos, schools and hospitals.

These partnerships avoid duplication of efforts and benefit the community at large.

I love to cook and it is especially gratifying to know that my efforts provide more than

just a meal for a patient or family member. I extend with it heartfelt wishes and brachos for

recovery, and a measure of relief for all involved.
