• Life is a mission. "To live out joyfully our re-

sponsibility for the world is a great chal-

lenge....Each one of us is called to reflect

on this fact: 'I am a mission on this Earth;

that is the reason why I am here in this

world' (Evangelii Gaudium 273)."

• We proclaim Jesus Christ. "To be set afire by

the love of Christ is to be consumed by that

fire, to grow in understanding by its light

and to be warmed by its love (cf. 2 Cor

5:14). At the school of the saints, who open

us to the vast horizons of God, I invite you

never to stop wondering: 'What would

Christ do if he were in my place?'"

• Transmitting the faith to the ends of the

earth. "The digital world – the social net-

works that are so pervasive and readily

available – dissolves borders, eliminates

distances and reduces differences. Every-

thing appears within reach, so close and

immediate."

• Bearing witness to love. "The Pontifical Mis-

sion Societies were born of young hearts as

a means of supporting the preaching of

the Gospel to every nation and thus con-

tributing to the human and cultural growth

of all those who thirst for knowledge of the

truth. The prayers and the material aid gen-

erously given and distributed through the

Pontifical Mission Societies enable the Holy

See to ensure that those who are helped in

their personal needs can in turn bear wit-

ness to the Gospel in the circumstances of

their daily lives."

Children’s Faith Formation: Sunday family is completing a study of the Holy Rosary. The rosary is a beautiful way to meditate on the life of Jesus from birth to ministry to suffering and

death and to Resurrection. So, have you picked up your rosary lately? This week we will be playing ROSARY BINGO in case you would like to join us.

Monday classes continue with attempting to learn how to come closer to Jesus. I remind all parents of students in grades 2,7 and 8, that students preparing for the Sacraments are required to bring a weekly bulletin from the Catholic Church that their family attends. The student needs to place his/her name on the top, along with the celebrant and the time of the Mass Adult Faith Formation: There will be no Thursday program on Thursday, November 1. It is All Saint’s Day. Our last session on the Eucharist will be on November 8. Then we begin a special speaker series, helping our journey to be Holy and Holier! Disaster Relief

Life moves at a very fast pace and sometimes we have very little control

over the result. We have witnessed natural disasters recently that have

really challenged the hearts and spirits of families and communities near

and far. The 24-hour news cycle allows us to hear and see what is

happening across the globe and in our communities. I encourage you to

stay in tune with what is happening and offer support and encouragement

where you are able. We provide you with many opportunities to assist

people in need here at home and abroad. Remember, even a small

donation makes a big difference when the multitudes respond. I am going

to share with you two agencies who are in the trenches assisting those in

need. Please consider donating to assist with the typhoon disasters

overseas and the hurricane victims closer to home.

Our care and concern is evident by our participation in the many

wonderful programs that we support as a St. Clare community. Thank you

for all you do for others.

School News From the Desk of Ms. Knaus, 8th Grade Teacher

In Religion class, we are preparing for confirmation. (Please keep us in your prayers). As part of our preparation, we will be going on retreat to the Subiaco Retreat House on December 5th. This is always an enjoyable and spiritual experience for the students. In Literature class, we are reading non-fiction stories such as Mark Twain’s “Cub Pilot of the Mississippi” as well as working on our Accelerated Read-ing (AR) points. The 8th graders are writing their personal Michigan Hero papers. They will be judged in a contest with the Farm Bureau Insurance Company. The topic for their paper is “Who is your Michigan hero?” In Math class, the name of the game is equations. Students need to re-member to use all the rules they have learned from Order of Operations, to the individual Integer rules. Using a variety of instructional techniques or skills help to move students progressively towards a stronger understand-ing and, eventually a greater independence in learning Math. Finally, our 2018-2019 Student Council is up and running with officers and representatives. Their first job is to tackle the school Halloween parade and festivities. We wish them luck in all their endeavors.

By Patricia Kolojeski

If you are reading this, hopefully you are on your way to our Celebration. Enjoy the reunion of friends.

Back to the Saints of Harvest. In the Eastern church, the protector of crops was Saint Tryphon of Con-

stantinople. There he labored as a poor gooseherd. He had a healing touch for both man and beast.

By his prayers a great swarm of locusts that was decimating the grain harvest, was miraculously turned

back. His fame brought him in direct conflict with the authorities, and he was executed. Russian icons

show him with a falcon on his arm. St. Walburga was of an Anglo-Saxon line. After her uncle Boniface

had taking his mission to the Germans, and the preaching of the priests had begun to take root, he sent

Walburga and other women to establish monasteries. A brutal squall wracked her ship en route, but the

wind and waves calmed when Walburg knelt in prayer. She studied medicine before going to Hei-

denheim as abbess. She is s invoked against storms, and for the protection of crops. “Silence and humil-

ity have veiled the labors of the nuns from the eyes of the world, but history has assigned them their

place at the very beginning of German civilization.” St. Margaret of Hungary was born to the King and

Queen of Dalmatia in the early 13th century. They beseeched God to end the siege of invading Mongol

Tatars. Should a child be born to them, they promised to consecrate it to God. At three Margaret was

sent to a Dominican convent. At twelve she moved to a new convent constructed by her father on an

island on the Danube. Like her famous aunt, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, she worked with her hands, ate

little and identified intensely with the poor. Her mortifications drew her closer to Christ’s Passion. She

died at twenty-eight. In memory of the time her prayers held back the flood waters of the Danube river,

she is invoked against floods. St. Anthony of Padua joined the Franciscans and lived an anonymous

existence until he was prevailed upon to speak at an ordination. He was then directed to teach theolo-

gy to the Brothers. He became an unparalleled preacher and was known as the “Hammer of Heretics”.

He is invoked by the poor, those in great need and for an abundant harvest. These are just a few of

many saints invoked to protect the harvest. Perhaps you would like to know more about them or find

others written about for their protection…..

All powerful God, through the intercession of these saints, make me a

silent laborer in your fields, there to reap a plentiful harvest.

St. Vincent de Paul News

Thanks to everyone who has been dropping off

clothing and household items into our "SVdP

donation pod" this week. The bin is scheduled

to be picked up sometime on Monday, Oct.

29th so there is still a bit more time to bring over

your stuff! When we give furniture, household

items and clothing to St. Vincent de Paul, we

give hope to our neighbors who have much

less.

Now that the colder weather is here, we expect

to have an uptick in our calls for assis-

tance. Many people need help with their ener-

gy bills, they request warmer clothing, or they

may be starting to anticipate a challenging

holiday season. We are looking for compas-

sionate volunteers who are willing to hear the

stories of our neighbors in need and to help

connect them to appropriate resources.

If you can get involved, please leave a mes-

sage on our assistance line at 313-647-5062 or

email Barb at [email protected].

Stewardship Thoughts In today’s Gospel, the evangelist St. Mark tells of Jesus’ healing of Bartimaeus when witnessing this blind beggar’s faith. He is then moved to discipleship in Christ and follows our Lord on the road. The prophet Jeremiah also illustrates the journey of God’s deliverance of the ancient Israelites from Babylonian captivity. In the Letter to the Hebrews, the inspired author expresses how God calls men to the priesthood. In our quest for discipleship that begins at our Bap-tism, do we have the faith and courage to an-swer God’s invitation to our life’s vocation? Are we praying for solid families — the “Domestic Church” — that will be the seedbeds for voca-tions to the priesthood, religious life, permanent diaconate, and lay ministries? If you believe God is calling you to the priesthood, the Office of Priestly Vocations, (313) 237-5875 or detroit-priest. com, can assist you with discernment. Women interested in religious life may contact the Office of Consecrated Life at (313) 596-7143. Men seeking information about the per-manent diaconate should also call that office, but at (313) 596-7142

Engaged couples will gather next weekend to reflect upon the keys for a fulfilling and lifegiving sacramental marriage at an Archdiocese of Detroit-sponsored pre-marriage workshop Catholic marriage is a calling from God to a shared vocation of life and love. This retreat will equip couples with the tools they need for a success-ful lifelong marriage through sessions covering communication, finances, family planning, and prayer. The Office of Marriage, Family, and Pro-Life, which is funded by your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal, is hosting the workshop over two days at Sacred Heart Major Seminary — on Friday, November 2, and Saturday, November 3 — for a fee of $110. For more information about this and other CSA-funded ministries, pro-grams, and services, go to aod.org.

Stephen Ministry

Is there someone in your life with whom you are com-fortable when you are not being your “best self”? This may seem like a strange question in an article about

the Stephen Ministry but let me explain.

A year ago my older sister died unexpectedly. Sud-denly a person who had always been an integral part of my life was gone. Her death was a tremendous loss. Every day I am reminded of how much I miss her companionship, her ex-tra set of hands whenever help was needed, and even her unsolicited “big sister” advice. What I did not fully appreciate until a little time has passed was the pain of losing of a trusted confidante for issues that I did not want to air publicly: my fears and anxieties, complaints and frustra-tions, gossip, and just plain venting. My sister listened without judgment or criticism at the times when I was not being my “best self”. Yet I knew these discussions would go no further; she would not violate my trust or

dredge up what I had said at a later time.

Here’s where the Stephen Ministry comes in. If you are going through a difficult time you may find comfort and healing by having a trusted com-panion walk with you: someone who will listen to you with complete con-fidentiality, without judgment, and without offering unsolicited advice. Sometimes just talking through a problem with a caring person helps you find peace and solace. Your Stephen Minister will also pray with you if

that is what you seek.

Stephen Ministers are members of our faith community who provide emo-tional and spiritual care to people who are hurting. They are trained to listen, care, encourage and pray with you during difficult times. The Ste-phen Ministry relationship is completely confidential. Stephen Ministers

are there to be your trusted confidante, to listen without judgment.

You can contact the St. Clare Stephen ministry at: [email protected], or call 313-647-5000, ext. 5054.
