United Way's goal is to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying causes of social problems that strengthen the lives of people and the community we serve, while addressing the immediate needs of individuals and families through various programs and services.

We bring together a vast network of serviceproviders, businesses, volunteers and

advocates to focus on the most important needs in our community in the areas of Education, Financial Independence and Health. We strive to help children and youth achieve school success, move people to self-sufficiency and assist people in overcoming obstacles to good health and independent living. By addressing the needs of individuals, and changing systems to help the community at large, we create opportunities for a good life for all.

We do this by assessing the most critical needs, reviewing and supporting effective strategies, building partnerships and mobilizing and leveraging resources, both human and financial. Why do we do this? Because change is local, and while Chester County is an amazing place to live and work, there are populations that do not have the same opportunities as others.

Thank you to all of you who make this work possible by Living United. Sincerely,

Born Learning Trails In addition to funding critical early learning programs, after school programs for young people and youth mentoring programs, United Way now has 10 Born Learning Trails throughout Chester County making learning fun and easy for families and their children.

Proud Sponsor of the Cyber School ProgramAffordable early childhood education is a top priority for United Way. We are proud to support the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s innovative approach to reaching children and their parents in their homes through technology based teaching. This interactive educational tool is helping at-risk preschoolers who have multiple barriers to participating in traditional early learning programs and providing added value to parents by assisting with English language, technology, and parenting skills.

The Coatesville Youth Initiative (CYI) fosters collaboration among community residents, youth, area businesses, nonprofit and county agencies, youth-serving organizations, the Coatesville Area School District and other educational entities to enhance the knowledge and skills of our youth so that they may reach their fullest potential.

SCHOOL SUPPORT MEANS SCHOOL SUCCESSEmily is a school-age girl on the autism spectrum who joined a United Way of Chester County funded learning program at age 2 for kids just like her. peers, family members and caregivers.

Emily now successfully communicates verbally and participates in group activities. She follows routines, seeks out peers for daily classroom play, and has demonstrated an ability to learn in all of her environments including in the classroom, at home, and out in the community. She is overall a very happy child.

Participation in the United Way funded program put Emily on track for school success with simple, developmentally appropriate instruction allowing her to fully engage in her classroom. The family as a whole has benefitted and her mother, teachers and caregivers celebrate her progress.

HEALTHShare the WarmthOur annual Share the Warmth home repair andwinterization program raised $66,480 during 2013-2014. This brings the number of family homes restored to safe, livable conditions to 385 over a 9 year period.

Code BlueThis effort was born during one of the coldest and most dangerous winters on record when United Way of Chester County was asked to step in and help address the safety of individuals and families in our community. Just over $22,000 was raised in 24 hours to ensure individuals experiencinghomelessness or who were without heat had a warm place to be during the harshest days and nights of the winter. 70 people were served with extended indoor shelter and warming station services, 50 individuals were provided warm weather wear, 9 individuals were provided with hotel/motel stays to keep them off the streets and 2 were served with rental assistance to avoid becoming homeless in the midst of the ice storm of 2014.

Chester County Long Term Recovery CommitteeAfter the First Responders and other disaster groups leave, there are often unanticipated needs that those affected face. In collaboration with the Chester County Emergency Services Department and other funders and service providers, United Way will help lead the effort to mitigate and solve the issues that occur in the aftermath of a disruption of normal living.

HAPPY, HEALTHY AND GRATEFULRon is a 58-year old man who came to a United Way of Chester County funded dental clinic after being diagnosed with throat cancer. Ron’s oncologist would not begin his chemotherapy until all of his dental work had been completed and he was infection free. An examination revealed extensive decay and periodontal disease requiring multiple extractions.

There are basic conditions that must be confronted to enable people to regain hope and achieve their full health potential . No one should be left out in the cold.

A staff dentist began his dental treatment and extractions. Eventually it was decided that the remainder would be handled by an oral surgeon to decrease the emotional and physical trauma of the treatment and to avoid further compromising Ron’s health so he could begin his cancer treatment as soon as possible.

United Way, with the coordinated help of the clinic’s dental experts, made it possible for Ron to expedite his dental work, begin cancer treatment, and put himself on the path to an independent and healthful life.

There is a continuum of needs that are essential to address to support individuals from crisis to thriving on the path to self-sufficiency. It is the coordination andintegration of services that make the greatest impact.

When Katrina graduated from a financial literacy program offered by a United Way of Chester County Financial Stability Partner, she was just emerging from a messy divorce which included a home foreclosure and the threat of job loss. The skills she earned from the financial literacy program taught her to make tough choices, take calculated risks, and develop sound financial management habits to avoid homelessness.

Katrina rented an apartment with her kids and was forced to make some difficult choices. She placed the family dog in the care of friends and sold some jewelry to make ends meet. But she also kept her head high and took a big risk by changing jobs resulting in more security, and a higher salary and benefits – and even a shorter commute! She developed sound financial habits like putting her income tax refund into savings, accepted donated furnishings for her newapartment instead of using debt to fund new items, and gradually reduced her existing debt. It was not easy, but Katrina has found ways to meet life’s challenges with confidence. She pays rent on time, maintains employment, and meets budgeting goals to that her income always exceeds expenses. Katrina is a model for self-sufficiency.

CAPACITY BUILDINGMaking investments and strategic partnerships in nonprofit organizations helps them fulfill their missions in an effective manner and bring critical resources to residents of local communities.

Business Continuity Training United Way and its partners hosted two business continuity planning workshops serving 99 individuals and 81 organizations. Beginning in 2015, all organizations requesting Community Investment funding must have a business continuity plan in place. These plans help minimize disruption to client service – a critical priority for the health and human service system.

Days of Caring This year, United Way coordinated corporate volunteer engagement projects resulted in the completion of 24 projects by 136 volunteers, saving the benefitting organizations $12,433.82 which can be returned to service delivery.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)VITA is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Through the ongoing efforts of Life Transforming Ministries and the Financial Stability Partnership, 94 volunteers assisted with tax returns resulting in nearly $2 million in tax refunds being returned to 410 households in 2014 (for the 2013 tax year) who qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This is the third year in a row that the dollar amount of total refunds reached or exceeded $1 million.

Leadership Chester County In May 2014, 29 participants graduated from LCC and with their new credentials began the process of joining a non profit Board. Leadership Chester County (LCC) is a professional development and service engagement program that educates peopleinterested in serving at the board level and introduces them to human service needs in Chester County. Total number of
