More than anything, Bedminster has an amazing live music scene, with artists coming from all over the UK to perform in venues like The Tobacco Factory, the Hen & Chicken and The Old Bookshop. BEFRIEND IT LIKE BECKHAMA befriending scheme in Bedminster is using cups of tea and good conversation to help social isolation among older people.

The 229th Bristol Scout Group, based in Raynes Road, Ashton is looking for more adults to join them For adult volunteers, Scouting positively impacts on their professional and personal lives, providing the opportunity to develop skills such as training, management, and communications. Plus, of course, adults supporting Scouting have a great time too!

Karen Paddock, Group Scout Leader of the 229th explained: “We’ve a growing number of young people wanting to join Scouting at the 229th. Before we can provide fun, challenge and adventure for even more young people, we need to recruit more adults willing to give time to support Scouting. Previous experience, or membership of Scouting is not required. We’re looking for adults that are willing to help young people and, at the same time, have a great time themselves.”

Adults joining Scouting are subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (previously CRB check) as well as local enquiries.

Helen (86) and Emma (27), fi nd that they agree on most things - except, that is, when it comes to David Beckham’s tattoos. “I really like them,” says Emma.

But Helen disagrees: “He’s got too many now. He was beautiful without them. It’s all right now when he’s young, but just imagine what they’ll look like when he’s old and wrinkly like me.”

Emma is a volunteer befriender for LinkAge Bedminster and visits lifelong Bristol City fan, Helen, every week.

“Helen likes to get her old family photos out and one time I bought round some of mine to show her,” says Emma. “We can always watch a game of football if England are playing or watch a DVD together.”

Helen was referred to the befriending scheme by Community Nurse, Alison Sherwin. “Up until I was 80, I used to be able to drive and go out every day. I never stayed in. I’m not so miserable now because on a Tuesday, I think, ‘Emma is coming tomorrow’ and that makes me feel better. Something to look forward to in my dreary life,” jokes Helen.

So does Emma have any advice for anyone thinking of volunteering for the befriending scheme? “Defi nitely give it a go. I feel like I’ve got a friend as a result of it - which is much more than I ever expected,” she says.

Dieting. There comes a time in everyone’s life where you just have to face facts and except that maybe you could do with losing a few pounds. The thought makes you shudder with dread at the thought of spending the majority of your day thinking about food, which normally just ends up making you hungrier than when you were not dieting. Anyway, as soon as you get off the diet it all goes pear shaped and you end up eating more in a week than you have in the last three months and begin piling the weight on again. The thing is, dieting should be more of a frame of mind than a chore you’re expected to do once every three months.

So how do you put yourself into that mindset and educate yourself to lead a healthier lifestyle and change the way you think about food for ever. A few simple steps is all it takes, the only rule is, you have to stick it out if you want to achieve your healthy eating goal.

High protein diets have come to the forefront in the last few years with diets like the Dukan Diet becoming a very popular weight loss method for many people. The Dukan Diet is based on a process of four phases that focus heavily on the basic food groups of protein and vegetables. A protein diet can encourage your metabolism to work faster and has a natural diuretic eff ect helping you maintain that trim and toned fi gure you’ve been working hard for. It’s not just a matter of eating any food high in protein, be careful of meat with high levels of fat, as lean meats are far more eff ective sources of protein. Try,

for example turkey, which is a great source of protein and tasty too.

Reducing your carb intake may be obvious, but you will be surprised at the eff ect it has on your body. Another dieting phenomenon to match high protein diets, low carb diets are proven to reduce cravings and to steady the rate at which you lose weight. You don’t have to cut out all carbs, as you do need some to sustain a balanced diet so cut out the right carbs like white bread and white pasta and replace them with brown or whole grain bread and pasta. Many people forget that vegetables like sweet potato and green beans are a form of carbohydrate so you can include these in your healthy eating and make yummy sweet potato chips with your fresh green beans.

Walking is something we have to do every day, whether it’s walking from your bed to the bathroom or walking to the shop to buy some milk. But again, this is something we associate with hard work and eff ort rather than something you should embrace and enjoy. Even if it’s a case of parking your car a little further away from the shops or the offi ce, walking can greatly improve your overall fi tness and health, helping you lose weight. Walking is not like other exercises as you can do it pretty much without getting breathless and lightheaded, so try it out, you never know you may enjoy it.

If you can adapt your diet to include these basic steps then you will be well on your way to improving your overall health and diet.

There is nothing better than using fresh herbs while cooking, and it’s an even better feeling when you know you’ve grown your herbs yourself. Surely a herb garden is a must have? Herbs have been used for centuries in perfumes, medicines and remedies and can turn any meal in to a culinary masterpiece. But if you’re struggling to think of what herbs you need in your garden or window box, then here are a few ideas to help you.

TO START OFF prepare your window box or herb patch with a soil based compost which will help retain the moisture herbs need to fl ourish. You don’t need to worry too much about positioning your herbs in a sunny spot as herbs don’t need much sunshine to remain healthy. If you do decide to plant your herbs in a window box, then you could decorate the container to add a splash of colour.

NEXT CHOOSE WHICH HERBS YOU WANT TO PLANT. There is a huge selection of herbs for you to choose from. Here are some favourites to give you some ideas:

Basil is a popular herb to use wile cooking. Fresh basil is the perfect accompaniment to pasta dishes, chicken dishes and most Mediterranean dishes. Basil is the main ingredient in pesto. As long as you keep your basil hydrated, it will last a long time.

Mint is a very aromatic herb and one that is used in many products. Not only is Mint used as fl avouring in chewing gums and soft mints but it also has strong medicinal benefi ts. Mint was originally used as a herb to treat stomach ache and is most benefi cial in

a tea to alleviate stomach pain. Mint is also used as a decongestant to help relieve colds. You can add mint to deserts, salads and alcoholic beverages as a garnish.

Lavender is a beautiful herb and is most famous for its lavender fl owers and perfume. Due to its sweet smells, lavender can be used in soaps, perfumes, cosmetics and aromatherapy lotions. Lavender can be used as a remedy for insect bites and is known to aid sleep and relaxation. Recently, Lavender has become a popular addition to sweet deserts as a decoration or as fl avouring, creating a delicate perfumed taste. The nectar taken from the Lavender fl ower makes a delicious honey.

Parsley is a fi rm favourite for most cooks. It is widely used as a fl avouring and garnish for many dishes including soups, sauces and meat dishes, one of course being cooked ham and parsley sauce. Parsley is a good source of vitamins like vitamin C and A and folic acid, working as an anti-infl ammatory and a boost to the immune system.

Cress is one of those herbs that instantly takes you back to those days in school. Mix your cress with cut up boiled eggs, mayonnaise and salt to make the quintessential tea-time sandwich for your lunch. For a little bit more fun, you can grow your cress in a mini container and stick googly eyes, a mouth and nose to the pot to make a fun cress head.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR HERBS could not be easier as they require very little care. All you need to do is make sure they are watered regularly and voilá you have your very own herb garden.

If you’re anything like me, your cars engine only gets a look at when it’s in the garage for its MOT. Even if you did open the bonnet from time to time, how many of us would actually know what to look for and fi ddle with? At this point, it’s probably best to step away from the engine and leave that to the professionals at your local garage.

There are a few simple steps that all of us can take to keep our car in tip top condition helping those garage bills stay low.

CHECK YOUR TYRES: Nightmare situation, you’re driving along and you hear the dreaded sound that tells you your tyre has blown. That’s when you start wishing you checked your tyre pressure more often. Defl ated tyres are more likely to puncture and are less fuel effi cient. Getting your tyre pressure checked could not be easier. Buying a tyre pressure gauge will be a valuable asset to your car, allowing you to check the pressure as often as you like. If you do fi nd you need more air, you can easily top this up for free in petrol stations.

HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR DIPSTICK: Checking your oil on a regular basis can be the diff erence between a healthy engine and an engine in dire need of repair. I bet checking your oil levels more regularly sounds like a good idea now?

A QUICK WAX, POLISH & VALET CAN WORK WONDERS: A clean car will help to maintain its overall interior and exterior appearance. A car valet these days often cost below £10 and will keep the spec of your car looking as it did when you fi rst bought it. A wax and polish will help preserve your car’s colour too.

DON’T LET THE COLD GET TO YOUR ENGINE: If the weather is a little on the cold to freezing side make sure you check your antifreeze levels in your tank. You should check this in the winter especially to avoid your engine not starting on a cold winter’s morning.

PREVENT YOUR ENGINE FROM OVERHEATING: You can do this by regularly checking your coolant level in your car. The coolant liquid in your engine will help transfer the heat generated by your engine. A burnt out engine usually means that you need to replace the whole thing so make sure you add this to your check list.

Sales Blog Distance to work most important factor The distance between a homebuyerʼs new home and their workplace is the biggest priority when it comes to buying a property, according to new research from Santander Mortgages. Brits would pay an average of over £5,000 to live closer to work, and a third of those surveyed said it was the number one factor. Second most important was the amount of living space available for their budget, with good transport links, parking access and south-facing gardens all highlighted as being key in the decision-making process. Families with children also want to ensure they are in a catchment area for a good school. Phil Cliff, director of Santander Mortgages, commented: “Itʼs fascinating to see the value that prospective buyers attach to different property features, and how these evolve as people get older and family situations change. Some of the most in-demand privileges, however, such as close proximity to the city or good schools, come with an expensive price tag. Itʼs therefore important that people speak to experts to ensure that their expectations are realistic and so that they get a good understanding of what they can and canʼt afford.” Paul Goverd, Managing Director of C J Hole in Southville said: “None of the findings in this survey will come as a surprise to anyone who operates within the property market. The old adage of location, location, location being key is as true today as it ever was. Clearly peopleʼs work- life balance and the increasing costs of commuting are key elements when it comes to choosing the location in which to buy or rent.”

Letting Blog Rightmove report says rents set to rise circa 2% in 2013 Rents are set to rise an average of 2% in 2013, tempered by majority of landlords planning a ʻrent freezeʼ. Some 61% of existing landlords are planning a ʻrent freezeʼ for 2013, the clearest indicator yet that landlords will opt for a lighter foot on the ʻrent rise acceleratorʼ next year. Just one in four (25%) of existing landlords intend to put rents up in 2013, and of those only around a third (35%) plan a raise of more than 5% - the result is likely to see the annual rate of growth ease to circa 2%. Landlords becoming increasingly mindful of tenantsʼ ability to meet rising rental demands, heightening risk of arrears and voids. So far more than a fifth (22%) of current tenants pays 50% or more of their take-home pay on rent as ʻaffordability ceilingʼ comes into view. Miles Shipside, director and housing market analyst at Rightmove, said: “The widening gap between tenant demand and rental property supply over the last few years has fuelled upwards pressure on rents. “However, the majority of landlords now seem to be prepared to exercise constraint and are planning a ʻrent freezeʼ for 2013. Lettings agents still report consistently high demand but more are warning landlords of the risks of squeezing tenantsʼ finances too hard. “However, some tenants in rental hotspots like London and Manchester may bear the brunt of higher rises. This combination of apparent benevolence and bullish hotspots may give a less racy rent rise outlook overall, but does not mask the fact that some tenants are again in for a rent rise shock.” Paul Goverd, Managing Director at C J Hole in Southville said: “Every situation needs to be looked at individually in order for a landlord to get the best return on their investment. This should include factors such as the longevity of the tenancy, the avoidance of void periods and the quality of tenant in terms of rental payments and property maintenance.”
