K-2 students will return to school on the bus at 2:00p.m. and 3-6 students will return to school at 2:45p.m. Teachers will supervise students until 3:25p.m. as per the usual routine. The Gold Standard Throughout most newsletters, we generally focus on the successes and efforts of ‘groups’. From time to time it is also important to acknowledge each individual’s outstanding achievements. Last Wednesday we celebrated student excellence at our Silver Assemblies and yesterday we had the opportunity to publicly recognise students who have achieved their Gold Award. Thank you to Miss Fowler, Miss Shute, Mrs Justic and the PBEL team for the great work they do recognising student achievement. Congratulations to each student who received a Silver or Gold Award at one of these special assemblies. You should each stand tall, speak with pride and enjoy the fact that you are among the best of the best at Beecroft Public School. You and your parents should feel very proud. Peer Support Leadership at Beecroft Public School is about ‘service to others’. Perhaps the strongest way that we see ‘service to others’ in action is through our Peer Support program. Our Year 6 students have assumed the role of Peer Support leaders and have delivered sessions dealing with resilience, optimism, personal strengths, friendship, team work and persistence. The Peer Support leaders have been outstanding and our junior students have certainly benefited from their wisdom and guidance. This Friday our Peer Support program will finish and we plan to celebrate by way of a picnic. Students are asked to bring their own piece of fruit to enjoy at this picnic. Thanks to the Year 6 teachers for their leadership and organisation of the program. Beecroft is an even better school because of Peer Support!

Special Guest Speaker – Georgia Cameron Last week, Georgia Cameron, author of ‘Mikey the Powerful Owlet’, spoke at our K-2 and 3-6 assemblies. The students learnt about the endangered species, including the Powerful Owl and the Gang Gang Cockatoo, which live right here in Beecroft. Georgia told students that their participation in the ‘Threatened Species Art Competition’ is a great way of raising awareness of the plight of these beautiful creatures. An example of one of the entrants from 2018 is shown below. Georgia also suggested that participation in the Beecroft ‘Picnic for Trees’ event, where trees are planted, is another practical way that students can choose to engage with this important issue. Threatened Species Art Competition By Allison W and Christine C 5J The species we chose to depict was the gang-gang cockatoo. These cockatoos actually live in Beecroft and other suburban areas. We find it is heart-breaking to see such beautiful examples of wildlife, but to know that they could simply just fade away. This is a multi-media artwork, using coloured pencils and gouache paints. We did this to create texture and make the artwork more effective. The pale colours of the gang-gang show the danger it is in and how easily the species could disappear. Also, the hands symbolise that we are striving to protect our precious animals. The fact that they are multi-coloured means that everyone needs to help in whatever way they can. We believe that it is essential for our future generations to experience and see these spectacular creatures.

Public Speaking Congratulations to Jeremy B and Ella J for their outstanding achievement in representing Stage 2 at the regional final of the NSW Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. Both students, featured below with their proud mothers, presented their prepared speeches followed by an impromptu speech on the topic of ‘trouble’ to the judges and audience. Congratulations also to Jeremy on being awarded a ‘highly commended’ certificate.

Good luck Mrs Reid and Mrs Wigg Last Friday Mrs Reid finished for the year and this Friday Mrs Wigg will also begin her leave. We wish Mrs Reid and Mrs Wigg all the very best as they welcome their new babies. Starting Term 3, Mrs Katherine Kennedy-Parker will teach KL and Mrs Kay O’Brien will teach 2W for the remainder of the year. Mrs O’Brien will also assume her role as Assistant Principal responsible for Stage 1. Tanya Rose Principal

Deputy Principal’s Report Learner Focused The learning modes for future-focused learning highlight different ways in which learning occurs. Each mode requires students and teachers to be interacting differently with space and each other. When we are aware of, and can identify how we want learning to occur, it guides the decision making on the design of learning space and technology requirements that will best support the desired learning. There are many examples of learning at Beecroft that include collaboration, demonstration, discussion, experiential, explicit, feedback and reflection, guided and independent. Below are a couple of examples of classes using both inside the classroom and the outdoor classroom over the last couple of weeks.

The Outdoor Classroom

Here students in year 5 are developing a deeper understanding of orienteering through collaboration, development of individual skills in navigating, while problem solving. The Indoor Classroom

Kindergarten have been learning about how things move as part of the Science unit: On the Move. Students looked at real pulleys and then worked in pairs to build their own. The challenge was to help the teddies climb to the top of the tower. Students were encouraged to experiment with a range of materials to build their own pulley system. It is exciting to see students so actively engaged in their learning. A Break from Routine While enjoying your break from routine and taking a little extra time to read to, and with, your child you might also like to include these two games. A fun way to build upon and strengthen their early numeracy skills. Here is a reminder of how to play Roll and Flip and Flip Ten

Roll and Flip with Uno All you need is a pack of Uno cards and a die. Step 1 – set out the Uno cards in equal rows and columns Step 2 – roll a die and turn the Uno card that the die lands on over. Step 3 – Add the number on the die to the number on the Uno card, player keeps the Uno card if they get the correct answer. # Game continues until all the Uno cards are taken. Variation Use more than one die to provide more of a challenge. If there are three players or more include the skip, reverse and miss a turn card for added fun. A fun addition card game that you can play with your child at home to build upon their mathematical strategies. Flip Ten

• Line up cards in four rows of five. • Then, flip two cards over. • If the sum of the two cards equals 10,

then the player keeps the cards and replace the cards with two more from the deck.

• The game ends when there are no more matches left. • A match includes the friends of ten (6 & 4, 7 & 3, 8 & 2, 5 &5).

Whoever has the most cards wins the game! Variation You can change the game and have players flip a different sum each time they play. All the Best Mrs Wigg is counting down the sleeps until her new baby arrives! Mrs Wigg has brought enthusiasm and dedication to her Relieving Assistant Principal position this semester. Her maternity leave begins as of this Friday. On return from some well-deserved long service leave, Mrs O’Brien (Assistant Principal) will teach 2W and resume the role of Stage One Coordinator from the beginning of next term and for the remainder of the year. Please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs O’Brien or me if you have any questions or concerns. Irene Robbins Relieving Deputy Principal

Sport Report Athletics Carnival Tomorrow is the day! The Hornsby Shire website has both Greenway Oval # 1 & 2 OPEN! Fingers (and everything else) crossed, we stay dry until 3:25p.m. on Wednesday! Good luck to all students who will be competing at the Athletics Carnival. The weather forecast is looking good, but please remember to dress in layers, have sun cream that can be easily reapplied during the day, lots of water to stay hydrated, all belongings labelled with your child’s name and class, and ensure your child has something waterproof to sit on as the ground will be damp.

Students who have ordered a BBQ Meal Deal via the Qkr app will receive a wristband from their class teacher as the roll is marked at school tomorrow morning. This will make for a quick pick up of food. If your child is making their way directly to the oval to compete in the 800m event, there will be an opportunity for these children to collect their wristband from their class teacher throughout the day. Below is a program of events for both the K-2 and 3-6 events. Please remember that this is a guide and an approximation of time for each event to take place. Please refer to the summary in Mrs Rose’s report for the running of the carnival.

Starry, Starry Night As Term 2 ends, so does Year 3 and 4’s Science unit – ‘Night and Day’. Following the successful stargazing evening in Week 8, students in Stage 2 had the opportunity to meet an astronomer and listen to a star talk. The students were then able to ask (lots and lots of) questions. Thank you Professor Croom for giving a day of your time to speak to us in Week 9.

Eco Corner Report Worms given safe passage Friday was planting day in the garden. Snow peas, snap peas, lettuce and spinach. With the cold and the wet, the crops are growing

slowly and only a handful of produce was harvested which was taken home by the knights. Half of the knights worked on clearing rocks off our main pathway, which then became a huge undertaking of UN proportions, to find and

relocate worms that were to be displaced to a safe garden bed. Who would have thought moving rocks from a path could become such an outlet of entertainment. I cannot comment on the mental well being of the worms after this process.

BOOSH

Hello Booshies!!! NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but also by Australians from all walks of life. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. Our games and activities this week are influenced by NAIDOC week celebrations. STATEMENTS – INFO FOR FAMILIES We apologise for the multiple statements sent to families last week. The next statement to be issued on Wednesday 11 July will also be a multiple issue statement. This is due to the Government child care subsidy changes, as we are unable to send statements that span the 2 July changeover date. If you have any queries about your payable fees please contact Boosh. CHILD CARE SUBSIDY (CCS) – NEW SYSTEM NOW IN PLACE Families who have completed all necessary steps, and who are eligible for Child Care Fee assistance, can see CCS showing on their new statements. If you believe you have completed all steps and are eligible but cannot see CCS on your new statement, please contact Boosh. If you have not completed all the steps, you will need to rectify the missing information either with Centrelink directly or through your MyGov account. While Boosh can provide you with some information, we cannot complete these steps for you. More information can be found: https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/child-care-subsidy VACATION CARE Vacation Care starts up on Monday 9 July. If your child is attending Vacation Care, please take note of the following standard information. *The centre is open 8:00a.m. – 6:00p.m. Your child must not be left at the centre before opening time and must be collected prior to closing or fees apply. *You must provide your child with enough Morning Tea, Lunch and Afternoon tea for each day, unless otherwise specified on the program. Help them to understand which items are for each meal so they don’t run out of food! *Your child must have a hat or a water bottle. If they do not have a hat or water bottle on an excursion, one will be provided for them for a fee. *On excursion days it is EXTREMELY important that you take note of specified arrival times (Movie day still TBA). Late arrivals delay the excursion for others and actually run the risk of the bus leaving without them. *If your child is sick etc and will not be attending, please inform Boosh; this is especially important on Excursion days.

String Ensemble Application for 2018 Does your child play a string instrument? The Beecroft Public School Strings Program welcomes new players of all levels, from Year 1 to Year 6. Violin, viola, cello and double bass players are needed. Students with one year of tuition on their instrument can join the Intermediate Strings and more accomplished players are invited to audition for the Advanced Strings. Rehearsals are on Monday mornings (Intermediate) and Thursday mornings (Advanced) before school. The Intermediate and Advanced String Ensembles perform at festivals and events throughout the year. Playing music together is lots of fun and a great way to extend musical learning. If you’d like to find out more, please contact Winnie, the String Ensemble Coordinator on [email protected].
