outstanding and our junior students have certainly benefited from their wisdom and guidance. This Friday our Peer Support program will finish and we plan to celebrate by way of a picnic. Students are asked to bring their own piece of fruit to enjoy at this picnic. Thanks to the Year 6 teachers, Mr Littlejohn, Mrs Luscombe, Mrs Randall, Mrs Stapley and Miss Woodbury, for their leadership and organisation of the program. It has been an absolute joy watching our Year 6 students step up and lead this program. Beecroft is an even better school because of Peer Support! Service to Others - Celebrating an Outstanding Volunteer Beecroft Public School is fortunate that ‘service to others’ is a cornerstone of our P&C and volunteer parent and community body. Our students benefit from the rich and diverse support provided by many volunteers at our school. Last week, parent volunteer, Ben McSweeney was recognised formally for his work as a volunteer at Beecroft Public School and in particular his leadership of the Gardening Group over the last seven years. Ben’s nomination was selected by a panel from many nominations from across the Metropolitan North Operational Directorate as being worthy of receiving this significant award from Executive Director, Mrs Cathy Brennan. Congratulations Ben McSweeney on receiving the prestigious award – ‘Executive Director’s Award for Excellence in Community Service’. The citation for this award is included below. Fittingly, the Gardening Group marked this occasion at Gardening Group last Friday with garden themed cupcakes and heartfelt speeches from student gardening leaders, Spencer and Oscar. Congratulations and thank you, Ben McSweeney, for your service to our students and school.

Executive Director’s Award for Excellence in Community Service Ben McSweeney has been a parent and active member of the Beecroft PS P&C since his son Lucas started kindergarten in 2013. Growing up in Beecroft himself, Ben also attended Beecroft PS as a student and has a passion for the school and local community that runs deep. For the last seven years, Ben has lead the ‘Greening our School’ initiative that has seen many gardens, playgrounds and potted plants flourish throughout the school. Ben has a gift for uniting the community and harnessing the talents of our students and parents, where working bees see up to 100 community members unite to plant, prune and tidy our school. Each Friday, Ben leads a team of student volunteers, the 'garden knights', in planting, harvesting, watering and weeding the kitchen gardens that Ben has established throughout the school. This small venture allows students to sell basil, mint, lettuce and other vegetables and use the profits to buy more seedlings and plants. Ben never misses an opportunity to teach the knights how to care and maintain seasonal crops and each week he writes a small section for the newsletter celebrating the gardening achievements for the week. Ben has not only upheld the value of service, in the department’s strategic plan, but has advanced this value, by inviting others to use their talents to serve also. While this nomination primarily celebrates Ben’s service to the school and students at Beecroft Public School through his efforts greening the school and teaching our students to care for the environment in which they spend so much of their school days, Ben’s service extends far beyond the gardens. Ben has served several terms as P&C President, Vice-President and as a P&C member. Ben has organised movie nights, working bees, election day BBQ’s and has been a pivotal collaborator for 3 Multicultural Fairs. Ben is always the first on the scene of any event and can always be found locking up at the end. He has endless energy and works tirelessly so any events run smoothly. The Beecroft P&C and community has a strong culture of service to others and Ben McSweeney has been a shining example of this value.

Celebrating Outstanding Students Congratulations to our outstanding students who received their Silver awards at the assemblies last week. You and your parents should be very proud of this achievement and for your commitment to the school values: respect, responsibility, excellence and participation. To recognise the significance of achieving the highest Beecroft accolade, a Gold Award, students receiving a Gold Award for Semester 1 and their parents and/or carers will be invited to a Gold Award morning tea early in Term 3. Congratulations to all award recipients.

Roofing Project This week we are expecting safety railings to be erected on the roof of the Administration building and for the removal and replacement of tiles to begin on Wednesday. It is likely that work will be suspended on Thursday and Friday, as new fencing will need to be erected at the front section of the building on Saturday. I would like to thank and acknowledge the staff, students and parents for their positivity and understanding throughout this process. Baby News Congratulations to Mrs Holly Halliwell and her husband Hugh on the safe and joyous arrival of their gorgeous baby girl, Lucy Mae Halliwell, last Saturday morning. Tanya Rose Principal

Peer Support 2019 Week 10 In this week’s final session of Promoting Harmony, the children will reflect on what they learned in Peer Support. They will remember to reflect on how to show respect, take responsibility and work collaboratively with others. To conclude the program the Peer Leaders have organised a fruit morning tea.

Thank you for contributing a piece of fruit for this celebration and for the ongoing support of your child/children as they strive to promote harmony.

Dear Parents, Our final Peer Support session for this year will be held on Friday 5 July. To celebrate what has been a most enjoyable and successful term of new friendships, we are having a small celebration with our Peer Support groups. This will take the form of a morning tea and small games session. Our morning tea and games session will take place on the Mary Street Grass at 10:05a.m. Students are asked to bring their own piece of fruit or vegetable, their own water bottle and the Year Six leaders will provide a treat to share. Food supplied for this event should be in line with the Beecroft Public School Anaphylaxis Policy, which asks students and parents not to bring any foods containing nut products. This event has the approval of the Principal. A risk management plan has been submitted as part of the event planning. Year 6 Teachers

Eco Corner Report Harvesting, watering, fertilising … and festivities for the Knights A huge thank you to our principal Mrs Rose for the beautiful cupcakes she made for our greening group. Delicious and enjoyed by all. It was also Spencer’s birthday, so we sang him a big happy birthday. He is our longest serving garden knight. With the festivities finished, it was time for more fun harvesting lettuce, rocket, and spinach, then watering the garden. It is the last week of term this week so a couple of new seedlings will be planted, with some mulching and fertilising of the garden beds in preparation for the school holidays. P&C News P&C News P&C News P&C News P&C News

Message from the President Thank you to all our volunteers Last Wednesday I had the honour of receiving a Certificate of Recognition Award from the Department of Education in recognition of my volunteering work over the last few years at Beecroft Public School. I would like to thank both the school and P&C for nominating me for this award. In all my time at school, it has always been a pleasure serving the community and being part of such a wonderful school. As nice as this award is for my service, I would just like to acknowledge some of the wonderful volunteers that I have worked with over my time, who may not get any recognition and who work tirelessly to make this school a better place. I would like to thank Sue Day and Sunil Shah who were our P&C role models when we came to this school and of course Tracey Hartshorne who did and was involved in everything and who was for so long the driving force behind the MCF and all things fundraising and social within the school. There was Ianthe Denby who ran the canteen, and has now been replaced by our wonderful Belinda Varndell, who has been the Canteen convener for many years. There was Stephanie Mitchell who seemed to be secretary of every committee and subcommittee. We currently have Maret Fraser who oversees all things Arts and Crafts, who is never seen, but has done such a wonderful job in growing this extracurricular area within our school. We have Sherri Cooper overseeing our Uniform Shop, Nathan Green who has been a constant source of guidance within BOOSH, and Janine Kissick keeping all things in tune within our Bands and Strings Subcommittee. Of course, there is Gary Tyzack who took on the daunting job of treasurer six years ago and who has streamlined all things accounts-wise so that our subcommittees are all in fabulous shape. We currently have Carolyn Choong and Louise De Vos watching over all our socialising, our secretary, Melannie Hogan, who has tidied up all our paperwork and ensured that our P&C Constitution is all in order, and our current VP’s, Lisa Yen and Adam Fusca, who work to get all the little things done and the bigger things as well. I have been blessed to work with so many parents during this time, have got to know them, and been involved in their lives and their children’s lives. The friendships that have been formed will last a lifetime.

So, as nice as it is to be honoured with this award, it is more important to reflect on and acknowledge the wonderful voluntary contribution, seen and unseen, of so many parents with our school; contributions that create the school that serves our children so well. There are many others who I have not mentioned but who I say a very big thank you to as well. How can you volunteer? For all of these events, the more parents involved the smoother the event, the easier the event and more importantly the greater opportunity to grow the community of our school. If you’re interested in any of these please let me know or grab a Blue Volunteer Sheet from the front office.
