GenReady and Cyber Safety Family Night Last Tuesday evening, 173 children and 206 parents from Stage 2 and 3 participated in information sessions aimed at upskilling families to discuss and manage the complexities of growing up in a rapidly changing digital world. This event was organised by Mrs Randall and Mrs Justic in response to a high number of parental inquiries related to the joint work of schools and families in supporting and guiding children growing up in 2019. The speakers addressed much of the learning that students have been covering at school. All speakers on the night reinforced the important role of parents. Reminding students that they all have access to ‘experts in the field of growing up’: their parents. The speakers encouraged the children to talk to their parents. I have briefly summarised some of the important messages from the speakers on the night. Constable Deb Crystal and Constable Troy Lucca

• Children will make mistakes. Use these mistakes to teach your child. • Say no. Set rules. Take control where you can. • No devices in bedrooms and bathrooms. • Closely monitor and supervise technology use. • Limit device usage. • If your child has seen something disturbing, use the opportunity to have a conversation. • Remind your children that, ‘Your password is like your toothbrush/underwear. Don’t share it and change it regularly.’

Haley from GenReady Haley from GenReady explained the changes that happen for girls and boys during puberty. Haley reinforced the message that making mistakes is a part of growing up and that the best mistakes are learning opportunities. Haley also reinforced the message that the adults at home are best placed to help children with all the complexities of growing up. Haley used humour as she gave some helpful tips on hygiene, including hanging up the towel and putting on the clean clothes that keep ‘magically appearing’ day after day. Haley spoke about friends and said that they will come and go but the adults in your life will always be there for you. She encouraged every child in the room to talk to their adults and to use them to help them work through the issues you face as you are growing and changing. She also spoke about how every human is unique and that every single one of them is ‘perfect’ just as they are.

The October P&C meeting was held last Wednesday night. The P&C were brought up to date on the BOOSH building project. For those who are free, a more detailed presentation will be shown at the upcoming November P&C meeting. Our principal, Mrs Rose, took us through the teachers’ changes and what is coming up this term including changes to the school presentation day. At the end of the meeting Alex, a parent at the school, showed a demonstration of his company’s STEM educational devices. November Annual General Meeting and P&C Thank You Celebration In November, the P&C holds its Annual General Meeting. The meeting reflects on and highlights what the P&C has done and achieved throughout 2019. It is also a time when we get together to celebrate the year, and to thank all those who have given their time and energies to make this great school better. To help celebrate the year, the meeting will start at 7:00p.m. for drinks and nibbles, before we go into the formal part of the meeting. The AGM is also the meeting where the P&C votes for those who it would like to represent it at the various executive and non-executive roles. This year Gary Tyzack, our treasurer, and I will be standing down from our executive roles, as our children leave for high school next year. We also have roles coordinating the social committee, overseeing communications, doing the important work of vice president and class parent vice president. There are also some roles where you are not assigned to a particular area, but attend the executive meetings to input on future direction or projects. If you are interested or need to discuss more about becoming involved, please give me a call or talk to Lisa Yen (Vice President), Adam Fusca (Vice President), Caroline Choong (Social Committee) or Gary Tyzack (Treasurer) or any other member of the P&C.
