Riley also placed second in the 50m Butterfly and second in the 200m IM races.

The senior boy’s relay team put in a great effort and came in 4th place in the finals with a time of 2:05.89 which was their best time. Congratulations to our Beecroft superfish on these outstanding achievements.

Easter Hat Parade On the last Friday of term the whole school stopped for the Easter Hat Parade. As always this was a wonderful community event. Thank you to Mrs Walsh, Mrs Reid and the Kindergarten team along with our Stage 3 teachers and students for their support to our younger students with helping them make their Easter hats. The P&C Social committee again provided a treat for every student, and ran the hospitality and book stall. Thank you to parent volunteers: Kelly P, Ruby K, Natalie T, Caroline C, Lee T, Lina L, Lotus H, Koreen D and Michelle M for your assistance. Thank you to team Beecroft for making this another great event.

Opportunity Class (OC) Applications for 2020 Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online are now available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 The application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. No late applications will be accepted. There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance. You must submit only ONE application for each student. An Expression of Interest form will be sent home on Wednesday to all Year 4 students. Please note this form informs our school of your intention to apply online and is not an application form. Deputy Principal’s Report Year 3 and Year 5: NAPLAN Online 2019 NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Between Tuesday 14 May and Friday 24 May our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site. If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher. Sports Report State Swimming Carnival A very big CONGRATULATIONS to Riley M who has progressed to the National Swimming Carnival in July which will be held in Melbourne this year (I hope the pool is heated!). 3-6 Cross Country Carnival Tomorrow will see the annual Cross Country Carnival take place (back up day Tuesday 7 May) at George Kendall Riverside Oval, Ermington. All students will be participating in the event, running the relevant distance for their age. 8, 9 and 10 years will run 2km, and 11, 12 and 13 years will run 3km. The children will travel by bus to the oval. Students in Years 3-6 must be at school and in their classroom by 9:10a.m. to have their class roll marked. The carnival should conclude at approximately at 1:00p.m. with all students returning to school by 2:00p.m. for scheduled afternoon lessons. Thank you to all the parents who will be helping us at the carnival; we very much appreciate your time. Could you please report to the recording table at 10:00a.m. where you will be given your position on the course. If your child is an asthmatic, please ensure that they carry their puffer with them as they run the course. The weather can be quite unpredictable at the carnival; please assist your child/ren in packing warm layers of clothing, a rain jacket (no umbrellas) and something to sit on as the House areas are shaded and tend to be a little damp under foot. There will not be a canteen operating at the carnival, nor lunch orders on the day. Please pack enough food and water for the day; the children tend to be a little hungrier than usual after their race! A rough guide as to when each race is held is as follows: All students walk the course for familiarisation between 10:00a.m. and 10:30a.m. 12/13yrs – 10:45a.m. 11yrs – 11:15a.m. 10yrs – 11:45p.m. 8/9yrs – 12:15p.m.

Please be aware that this is an estimation of times, we may run under or over time due to unforeseen issues arising. Parents are very welcome to join us for the day, perhaps sharing a picnic lunch with your child/ren! Joanne Justic Sport Co-ordinator

Year 6 Peer Support

In the final week of Term 1, Year 6 students took part in a Peer Support Leader Training Day. Peer support training was fun and exciting as we learnt to become better leaders, not only for peer support but in our day-to-day life. Our favourite part was making a shelter out of natural resources, newspaper and masking tape. At first we thought it was going to be very challenging but when we worked together and helped each other it become a lot more achievable. We would also like to thank Mrs Luscombe, the Year 6 teachers and the parent volunteers, Natalia Turner, Maree Perfremont and Lisa Chen who organised lunches and helped to make this day possible. Ayla 6W and Hannah 6W

Sydney Academy of Chess

CHESS!! Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Beecroft Public School is held on Intermediate: Wednesdays from 1:15p.m. to 2:00p.m., starting on 1 May 2019.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games.

Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email [email protected] for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.

We also have the school athletics carnival a little bit later in early July. Easter Hat Parade and Book Fair Thank you to all the parents who helped, and also attended, the Easter Hat parade at the end of last term. The hot cross buns, tea and coffee and of course the chocolate eggs, took the event to the next level.
