Motion detectors are often designed to detect moving heat sources in their detection range and to automatically switch the respective lights on/off. This is made feasible with passive infrared technology. That means integrated infrared sensors register thermal radiation and convert these into an electrical signal. The sensor itself does not transmit any radiation and for that reason is referred to as a passive infrared sensor (PIR sensor). Objects and bodies, for instance those of persons, radiate heat. This heat is within the infrared range and is invisible to the human eye (see
If temperature differences now arise due to movement, they are detected by a sensor integrated in the motion detector and converted into an electrical signal that is evaluated by a processor and then triggers the switching for the connected fitting.
A multi-segment lens is positioned in front of the sensor (PIR) which bundles the invisible thermal radiation emanating from various directions to the sensor. The motion detector measures the thermal difference between the heat source and the environment. As soon as the signal from a heat source is registered by a segment, the detector reacts to the thermal difference and generates a signal that activates a relay.
Optimal sensitivity is generated by movements that are crossways to the motion detector. If an object or body moves towards or away from it, due to its operating principle, it only reacts if at least 2 active segments are covered.

PD4-Duo range has three models designed around Australian applications The Duo models are specifically designed for rooms that require two different lux control. With the use of optic fibres the sensors are able to pin point the light source, giving excellent LUX control whilst maintaining occupancy detection and saving on the need for additional sensors.
PD4-Trio range is similar to the Duo range in that it is designed to do window dimming and room lux control. It has an additional output designed to interface with the HVAC system allowing it to operate when the room is occupied, This feature has a dead band filter built in ensuring if someone walks into the room and does not occupy the room for a short period the HVAC will not turn on .

PD4-Trio-3D supports 3 DALI dimming channels. It is designed to control areas that require two constant light controls as well as various dimming levels on the 3rd channel. Using this model with slave units, it is possible to control large areas just with one master sensor which minimizes the costs of installation and hardware over conventional lighting control systems. All BEG sensors come with masks (blinds). These are required if the application requires the sensors not to trigger in areas where unwanted detection causes retriggering, For example, small offices where walking past the open door turns on the lights in the room . With correct installation, it is possible to accurately mask off unwanted areas.

This code is designed to set a standard which defines the minimum requirements in relation to sensor use in domestic and commercial buildings. The BCA allows the increase of power density (W/M²) when devices such as presence detectors are incorporated into the design. Refer www.abcb.gov.au for more detail
A person entering a monitored area is detected when the infrared energy emitted from the intruder's body is focused by a Fresnel lens or a mirror segment and overlaps a section on the chip that had previously been looking at some much cooler part of the protected area. As the person moves, so does the hot spot on the surface of the chip. This moving hot spot causes the electronics connected to the chip to de-energize the relay, operating its contacts, thereby activating the detection input in the sensors program causing the output to be made . We recommend careful placement of the sensor to prevent false triggering and presence detection. The BEG range of PIRs do not project through glass so false detection from outside is not possible. This is done by tuning the wave length of the sensor. A person moving on the other side of the glass would not be 'seen' by the PIR. We also recommend that the PIR not be placed in such a position that an HVAC vent would blow hot or cold air onto the surface of the plastic which covers the housing's window. PIRs can have more than one internal sensing element so that with the appropriate electronics and Fresnel lens, it can detect direction. Left to right, right to left, up or down providing an appropriate output signal.
