4 rounds to go as we enter the “Twilight Zone” where results are known

only to individual tipsters - and the last round is Double Points!

The tough games continue: North & Hawks, Dons and Port, Adelaide &

Saints and Lions and Dogs to finish. Looking for an upset to put you

ahead - perhaps the Dockers can lower the boom on the Cats or

Carlton can upset the Premiers on Sunday?

Plenty of challenges, 36 games in all to complete the regular season.

    Good luck!

  • Marina Gate. This topic has been one of many conversations over the last 4 weeks

and for a long period before that!

As you all are aware, we tried to have the gate closed during the course

of the day (and night) but very quickly it became apparent this was not

    a positive move.

Not with standing, the fact that live aboard member’s prefer in many

cases the gate be locked at all times, the committee has discussed and

    voted the gate:

REMAIN OPEN DURING DAY LIGHT HOURS.

Signage will be updated to advise this, and clear signs as to behaviour

& acceptable visitors allowed onto marina.

The gate will be opened by Bosun in the morning if not already and

secured at 1700 (5pm) by Bosun at the end of shift.

On weekends and Race Days the gates will remain open for crews to

enter, at the end of the day, crews will be advised to close gate.

If you have any question’s, please do not hesitate to drop up and see

me or send me an email with your concerns.

  • A tribute to Francis Noel Hall

One of my fondest memories of Noel was that on numerous occasions

whilst walking along the marina I was able to stop and have a chat with

Noel while he was meticulously caring for his pride and joy “Farewell”

he would spend many many hours sanding here and varnishing there

    to keep “Farewell” looking immaculate.

I also used to worry quite a lot with the difficulty sometimes of Noel

being able to get aboard, there for long period of time Noel had to

shimmy under the safety railing, until one day he slipped and actually

fell in the water, thankfully Noel wasn't injured and luckily the tide was

low and Noel was able to stand up in chest deep water and was able to

    be assisted out.

As a result, we then removed a section of railing to make it easier to

get aboard although as time went by it was becoming more and more

difficult for Noel to get aboard.

Noel as he was affectionately known to us was a member of the

Bellerive Yacht Club for over 67 Years serving in many different ways.

Our once popular club Journal the “Yardarm” of September 1973 has

an article which reads, "Despite the fact that he is still a relatively

young man, Noel Hall's contribution to the welfare of the Club began a

quarter of a century ago. He joined first in 1948, became a member of

the General Committee in 1959 and, except for a break of two years,

had served as a Committee-man continuously until 1979."

During this time Noel served as Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore,

Committee man, a member of the Sailing Committee and as a delegate

    to the Tasmanian Yachting Association.

  • Noels contribution to Tasmanian Yachting has been as impressive as

his contribution to the Bellerive Yacht Club, Noel has seen the

Bellerive Yacht Club grow and prosper during his years of service, in its

growth he played an active practical role, he has given not only sound

counsel but has also generously and selflessly used his skill as an

expert woodworker to the very great advantage of the Club and its

    members.

It was a fitting tribute to his valued service to the Bellerive Yacht Club

that in 1973 Noel was honoured with Life Membership of the Bellerive

    Yacht Club.

Our deepest condolences to Noel’s family.

  • Safety Equipment Audits 2019/2020

Any yacht that wishes to compete in a Cat 4 or higher sailing event

must have a Safety Audit completed by an accredited Australian

    Sailing Safety Equipment Auditor.

BYC Equipment Auditors are Ian Marshall and Drew Meincke.

    To help you with the difference between Cat 5N (Pipe Opener) to Cat4;

Installed compass, Clipping points, Safety harnesses, Bow pulpit

openings Permanent VHF, 2 x means of receiving weather, compliant

    heavy weather jib & additional: 1 x 10BE extinguisher, 2nd anchor, 2 x

White flares, Lifejackets min. 150N. Most of these items I would

    expect you already have.

Bellerive Yacht Club view the Safety Audits as a DUTY OF CARE to you

    our competitors.

At the end of the day it is the SKIPPERS RESPONSIBILITY.

Reminder to all competitors that minimum condition of entry for

TWILIGHT RACING is Cat 7 SELF AUDIT.

YOUR REQUIRED AUDIT FORM CAN BE PRINTED FROM BYC

HOME PAGE under SAILING (Sailing Documents).

Anyone that requires help or advice on Safety Audits contact the BYC

  • Hi Everyone,

Some great news. sailBYC are running an “Understanding

Weather” course and who better to run it than Kenn Batt. Kenn has a

lifetime of experience in meteorology. I attended one many years ago

and thoroughly enjoyed it. I reckon it’s a must have skill if you plan to

go anywhere past the Iron Pot! The course will explain the basics, the

value of gathering information, understanding observations and

anticipating what the weather scenarios are likely to be. We plan to run

more intensive courses later this year so this will give you a great start.

It’s an all-day course on Sat 7 Sept. Cost is $100.

Please contact the office to register.

    Coming up: AUGUST

    Marine Diesel Maintenance - TBA

Information Session sailBYC are running an "Information Session" on the various rating systems and

what you need to do to prepare your boats. Jeff Cordell will be presenting

information on IRC, ORCi and AMS. There are some differences in how boats are

measured and Jeff will explain and answer any questions on all of the rules. With

IRC nationals coming up, now is the time to start your preparation. Chris Sheehan

will be giving a presentation on PHS and Topyacht.

This is a complex task but you'll get an understanding on what a skilled job a

handicapper does. Everyone who sails under PHS owes the handicapper a beer!

They don't do it for the money.

Date: Wednesday 21st August at 19:00hrs in our Marina Bar.

    Cost: NIL

Please contact the office to enrol - 6244 1353 or [email protected] to enrol

Weigh In Day sailBYC are conducting a "weigh in" day on Saturday 31st August. This is a cheap

way to get your boat weighed if you are considering getting a rating this year.

Contact Jeff Cordell at [email protected] for more details

  • Location: Cleanlift

    Cost: TBA

Please contact the office to enrol - 6244 1353 or [email protected]

    Coming up: OCTOBER

Safety Survival at Sea sailBYC are conducting an Australian Sailing

Safety at Sea and Survival Course. This will be run by Jeff Cordell,

    who competed in the

1998 Sydney to Hobart race and has been teaching this course since

    1999.

This is a prerequisite for Cat. 1 races like the Sydney to Hobart, but it’s

    equally pitched at cruising sailors.

Thursday Oct 24th - you will learn how to prepare for a voyage. How

to check your equipment, things you should consider like crew training,

and working out how to get the best out of your crew.

Thursday Oct 31st - you will learn how to deal with heavy weather

sailing. How do you set up your boat? What preparations can you

make when you’re in or about to be in a storm? Learn about basic

weather forecasting, reefing, storm jibs and tri-sails. Most importantly

we offer suggestions on what to do if you have a crew member go

    overboard.

Sunday Nov 3rd - is an all-day event. It’s the best bit! You get to

inflate a Life Raft and learn how to right it should it flip. We fire off

flares, so if you really have to do this, you will know what to do. We

also cover jury rigs. How you might be able to rig a temporary rudder,

or, fix stuff. We also go through emergency communications and what

to expect if you are being rescued by a helicopter.

    Location: Marina Bar

    Cost: $320

Please contact the office to enrol - 6244 1353 or

    [email protected]
