DESCRIPTION

June 10 to August 27, 2016 Reverend Moore is tormented by the dangerous consequences of rock-and-roll in his town. He has banned dancing, but his peace is short-lived. When music-and-dance-loving Ren arrives from the big city, he rallies his fellow teens (including the Reverend’s daughter) against the oppressive rule, revitalizing the spirit of the repressed townspeople, and helping them heal from a tragedy that affected everyone. Re-live the high-energy and open-minded fun of this hit 1984 film. Featuring a score of flashy dance tunes and a rock combo band, this Tony nominated show is undeniably entertaining.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTORRANDAL HUBER

Welcome Theatre-Goers! Thank you for joining us for today’s performance of Footloose: The Musical ! Each summer Chemainus Theatre offers you the rare opportunity to take in a professional Broadway musical in our intimate274 seat venue, where the back of the house is row eight. No opera glasses needed here; all the action and energy isso close you can almost reach out and touch it. As with the majority of our productions, Footloose was built and rehearsed right here in Chemainus; costumes, set, props ...the whole gambit. While the actors hail from across Canada, they call Chemainus home for the four months that they rehearse and perform this show. Complete your Chemainus Theatre Experience by pursuing our fine gift gallery, enjoying a sumptuous buffet in the Playbill Dining Room and strolling through town to take in the shops, cafes and world-famous murals. I also recommend trying our luxurious theatre getaway on your next visit by reserving a package that includes a nights’ stay in the award-winning Chemainus Best Western Plus Chemainus Inn. As a child of the 80’s, Footloose is pure nostalgia for me and conjures wonderful memories of MTV, Rubik’s Cubes, Gretzky & the Oilers dynasty, acid wash jeans and making mixed tapes (which I now realize posed copyright issues). So buckle up for this high energy flashback called Footloose. Nanu nanu.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORMARK DUMEZ

This summer we welcome an energetic cast and crew from across Canada to tell the story of Footloose. It’s got up tempo numbers, great dancing and some killer ballads. It’s got lots of 80’s nostalgia for all those who enjoyed teasing their hair, bright colours and slipping into a fresh pair of jeans. And check out that bridge!

Footloose also offers a quirky look at an age old dynamic – the motion of young adults trying to stand on their own as parental pull simultaneously assists and prohibits that motion. The stakes can be high as teenagers break away. Indeed, as this small town knows, they can be life and death. And yet, in the jostling of finding self within the community of family and town – the most powerful force always seems to be some form of love. Love for kids and community alongside teenage crushes and raging hormones. Footloose is a slice of life full of angst and glory and a fun, toe-tapping tale to tell. At the end of it, I hope a few kids might want to call a relative and tell them thanks for putting up with their teenage years – and a few parents might want to hug their kids a little tighter – but maybe between the dancing! Enjoy your time in the theatre.

Musicals adapted from movies are popping up in theatres around the world. And that’s no big surprise. Classic song and dance shows like 42nd Street, The Producers, and Singing’ in the Rain have been adapted from other sources for decades (including books, song, and radio). What is changing is that the adaptations are more frequent, and springing from more modern films (The Lion King, High School Musical, South Park). We think that’s good news. The live telling of a terrific story is the best form of entertainment, and we’re thrilled to see more crossover! In the tradition of great screen-to-stage adaptations, we’re excited to bring you Footloose. In today’s show, you’ll find the plot stays faithful to the 1984 film’s spirit of youth, rebellion, and romance. However, you’re in for a treat as the adaptation includes some clever improvements. Footloose, the musical, will give you more flashy dancing, live rock music, and a powerful experience of the sweet story that made the original movie a world phenomenon. Bringing a major Broadway production to our stage is a big task. Our greatest thanks goes to our artistic team, actors, production team, sponsors, volunteers, and all those who have truly “kicked off their Sunday shoes” to make the show sizzle. And thank you as always to our audience. We couldn’t be happier that you, too, like it live.

DIRECTOR’S NOTESBARBARA TOMASIC

Dance can be a way to express our deepest emotions – joy, love, and sometimes even sadness. We dance at weddings, birthdays, and great celebrations. There is a sense of abandon when we dance, a loss of intellectual control.

Footloose is a story about dancing, but it’s also about a family and a town that is grieving a great loss. It’s a story about how fear and grief can cause us to control the things around us, when what we really need is to let go.

I love this story and I’m so grateful to be telling it with the team here in Chemainus who are so generous of spirit and creativity. It takes me back to my teens, a time when, as an adolescent, I struggled to make the adults around me see what I believed to be the truth. I didn’t understand that they were dealing with their own emotions and fears and that perhaps there was a meeting ground where we could connect and learn from each other.

It is also a musical filled with love, heart, and open youthful energy, something that we can all use a bit of in our sometimes challenging and adult lives. So, we invite you to let that energy take you beyond your worries and cares and CUT FOOTLOOSE!!!

Feel free to dance in your seat.

BARBARA TOMASIC Director

UPLIFTING ENTERTAINMENT ON ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!Tennessee Williams’ A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur

In her cramped, mid-1930s apartment, schoolteacher Dottie awaits a call from her Prince Charming (also her boss, the high school principal). Despite theirdifferences in social class she is sure, after their recent tryst, an engagement is on the way. But delusional Dottie is headed for heartbreak, unless one of her twobest friends can help her escape single womanhood and find true happiness.

Bodey, her dishevelled but good-hearted roommate, has a plan to arrange a love match between her portly, cigar-chomping brother and Dottie. While snooty Helena,a cheerful bearer of bad news, makesan uptown offer that may be impossibleto refuse.

Time is ticking to make a decision. Findout what happens in this rarely produced dramatic comedy – rich with symbolism,a bittersweet story of redemption, and witty dialogue.

A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur plays at The Chemainus Theatre Festival from September 9 through 24, 2016. Tickets are available now at 1.800.565.7738or chemainustheatre.ca.
