Focus on FallsMore than one in three people

age 65 years or older fall eachyear. The risk of falling and fallrelated problems rises with age.

According to the NationalInstitute on Health, each yearmore than 1.6 million older U.S.adults visit the emergencydepartment for fall-relatedinjuries. Falls are the number onecause of fractures, hospitaladmissions for trauma and loss ofindependence. Most oftenfall-related fractures are in aperson’s hip, pelvis, spine, arm, hand, or ankle. Appropriate use ofassistive devices can preventharmful falls. These devices mayinclude canes, walkers, wheelchairs and grabbers.

Risk factors related to falls caninclude: muscle weakness, poorbalance or difficulty walking, fluctuations in blood pressure, slower reflexes, foot problems, sensory problems, visualdisturbances, confusion (evenshort term memory loss) andtaking four or more medicationsat one time, including over thecounter medications.

Our Director of Resident CareServices can provide a home safetyassessment of your apartmentwith the goal of reducing your risk

for falls. Some tips to “Fall Proof”your home:

• Improve lighting. Be sure youhave night lights throughoutyour apartment and in thebathroom.

• Avoid and remove clutter oranything that can be atripping hazard.

• Review the carpet andremove any throw rugs. Besure to use only a non-skidrug in your bathroom anduse a rubber bath mat in theshower.

• Try to avoid wet floors.• Avoid walking in the snow

and ice outside duringwinter.

• Install handrails and grabbars as needed.

• Place frequently used itemsso they are easily accessible.

• Request a medication reviewfrom your physician to beassured you are taking themedication you need.
