Belmopan is the capital city of Belize. Its population in 2010 was 16,451.

Although the smallest capital city in the continental Americas by population, Belmopan is the third- largest settlement in Belize.

Founded as a planned community in 1970, Belmopan is one of the newest national capital cities in the world.

HISTORY

In 1962 , Hurricane Hattie destroyed approximately 75% of houses an business places in low-lying and coastal Belize City.The government proposed promote the building of a new capital city. In 1962, a committe chose the site now known as Belmopan, 82 kilometres ,west of the old capital of Belize City.Belmopan, is derivad from the union of 2 words: Belize, the name of the longest river in the country, and Mopan, one of the rivers in this area.

GOVERMENTBelmopan was goverment by the corporation RECONDEV ( Reconstruction and Development Corporation).Residents of Belmopan voted in a referenfum in 1999 to switch to direct election of a city council.In 2000, was incorporate as a city and held its first city council election.

GEORAFHIC: Belmopan is 50 miles inland from the Caribbean and 76 meters above sea level, located near the Belize River.

CLIMATE: Belmopan feature a tropical monsoon climate.DEMOGAPHIS: Has a mix of ethnicities including Kriols, Garrifuna, Mestizo, Maya and more historical recent immigrants from Asian, China and Taiwan

LANGUAGESBelize was a fromer British colony, is therefore english is the official language. The espanish is spoken as a mother tongue by 50%. Belize also has indigenous languages.EDUCATIONThe City of Belmopan has 3 pre-schools, 4 primary school and 4 secundary school well modern Regional Languaguage centre on the central campus of the University of Belize.

ECONOMYBelize has an economy based mainly on agriculture , manufacturing and tourism economy are the major sources of foreign exchange.COINBelizean Dollar

CULTUREHOLIDAYSFirst January : Carnival.21 September: Independence Day.9 March: Baron Bliss Day. In honor of benector of the the country.

SPORTSYou can practic: surf, windsurf, snorke, hiking, diving, moutain bike.GASTRONOMYIs inspired by the Mexican and Caribbean food, its basic ingredients are: rice, beans accompanied by chicken, pork, beef , fish.Another traditional dish is the conch soup.RELIGIONThe catholic and ancient maya beliefs they profess, as also the prtestant.
