Help WantedHelp WantedPrepare Historical Photos for Digital ArchivesSusan Todhunter is scanning and saving the club’s historical scrapbooks. Members are currently working on a plan for preserving the old and creating an on-line vault for our digital pictorial history. Your Club is in need of a member who has experience working with photographs that can quickly skim through submittals to select, size, crop, enhance and prepare photos for the digital archives. If you are a photographer/graphic designer/printer or have these advanced skills, please consider devoting some time to the club to help with this important project.______________________________________________FMI- Contact [email protected] or [email protected]

Resources Available for Berners Beyond Membership

Berner Blatt to be published on BMDCNV.org

With a special meeting at Spring Fun Day, the membership voted to broaden the distribution of the club’s resources and educational material to benefit Berners beyond our membership. Beginning with the June 2014 issue, the Berner Blatt will be published on our club website witha 3 month delay.

Summer Picnic II

Dog Day Afternoon PicnicDog Mountain 143 Parks Rd

Saint Johnsbury, VT July 26, 2014, 10am-3pm

Come & join us for a fun-filled day with your

Bernese Mountain Dog at Dog Mountain!

Relax; take in the sights; visit the gallery; enjoy a walk…all on 150 acres of dog friendly property. There are hiking trails, dog ponds and of course – the world

famous Dog Chapel! It’s an off leash haven for all! Dogs are welcome in the Chapel and in the Gallery.

10am-12 Arrivals – get acquainted with the grounds & enjoy a short walk to upper area.

12-1:30 Barbeque, you bring it & I will have a grill master standing by the grill to help. Please bring a side dish for the table & your own drinks. We’ll have paper products.

1:30-3pm Group Photo is planned. I will offer Individual Photos at the most scenic spot in Vermont! Photos will be done for a nominal donation of your choosing, to either B.E.R.N.E.R. Inc., or to the AKC Health Fund. Photos will be emailed to you after the event.

2:30 Blessing of the Berners in Dog Chapel.

3:00 Wrap it up and say good bye!

TENTATIVE ITINERARY

Please check out the website www.dogmt.com for hotels and campgrounds in the area. A personal recommendation from Dog Mt. is the Fairbanks Inn located in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

Outdoor cover is limited to the chapel and the gallery so shade tents are a good idea. Also bring a chair for yourself or a picnic blanket to lounge on. There is access to water for dogs to drink, but bringing it is a good idea as well.

Please RSVP to Heidi Henderson at [email protected] or call 802-422-3084

Announcing the search for the site of the BMDCA 2018 National Specialty. So far we have a team consisting of Buffy Bell, Sue Nowak, Martha McCormick, Adam Conn, and Sue Mahan, but more members are welcome, as well as any suggestions for our site search. Please e-mail ASAP for a list of requirements, more information, or simply to share your thoughts. We would like to present our findings to the board this coming September. And so the search is on! Buffy Bell - [email protected].

From the President...2008 seems like yesterday...what a

great time it was for all of us working together to host the BMDCA Specialty!

Keeping with Nashoba’s tradition of hosting every 10 years, we will begin the work to host the 2018 National Specialty.

With my duties to our members and Berners as President, I will not plan to chair this event.

The club is seeking a team to share the Chair and Co-chair responsibilites & compliment each others strengths.

One of the Chairs should be well versed and familiar with the show ring, while the other a detail organized person.

The BMDCA has outlined a manual with a step-by-step guide–it is not intimidating ...you just need the time and love to work with people.

I suspect many of you will want to Chair your old position that you held in 2008- and that will be great.

A site Location team has already formed to scout and explore potential sites. Buffy Bell is the Chair of the Site Selection Committee.

Give it some thought and start to consider if you would have the time and would enjoy leading our experienced members in 2018.

Notice I said “experienced”...the Show Chair & Assistant positions will be many hours of work, but a walk in the park...this will be the 3rd-4th time around for many of our members - and Nashoba Valley knows how to present a great dog show with an enjoyable and educational gathering of Berner lovers.

Housekeeping & Notes about Oceanwood: *Oceanwood is a summer camp and conference center, with facilities that are dog friendly. Oceanwood is a dry campus. There are miles of trails, and it’s just 2 blocks to the ocean. The community is very dog friendly, and is a seasonal community. Dogs should be leashed on the main area of camp and throughout the neighborhood. There are trails that reach to the Goosefare Marsh and the Rachel Carson Wildlife Preserve. These are protected lands. Dogs are allowed off-leash, but be respectful of our neighbors and the wildlife. Maintain verbal control, or leash your dogs. Dogs are allowed at the beach anytime, and may also be off-leash there. Be mindful of other dogs, and make sure your dog is safe at all times. Keep off the dunes at the beach (these areas are protected by law). *While they welcome our canine companions, they have basic expectations for owners. They expect that you will *always* clean up your dog’s waste (even in the woods!) and properly dispose of it. There are groups of people that utilize Oceanwood’s property on a year-round basis. There will be trash cans around the property, as well as a dumpster behind the dining hall. Please – honor this very basic sanitation request. *Any area identified as “no dogs allowed” means just that. Please respect these minimal limitations. Whoever was housed in a particular building will be held directly responsible for any damage

to that specific location – regardless of who else may have been there with you. Any property damage, such as stains that require excessive cleaning, will be charged to the BMDCNV and we will in turn, charge you. *Crates in rooms and x-pens outside may be set up for the comfort of your dogs and management of multiple dogs. Dogs may be in your room, but must be crated when unattended. Any barking issues that require us to contact you will require your immediate attention. Please do not leave a “barker” unattended – you know who you are! *Park in designated areas only. Vehicles may not be driven on the lawn areas. Areas closer to doors may be used for loading/unloading zones. *Mail completed form with deposit of $80/person, payable to BMDCNV: Melissa George, 237 Rand Hill Road, Alton Bay, NH 03810. Please mark your envelope with the word “RETREAT” on the outside. Any questions about the event may be directed to Matthew and Melissa at [email protected]. *Final payment is due October 1st. Your deposit will be refunded if you need to cancel prior to October 1st. The club will retain deposit if you must cancel anytime thereafter. Anyone who does not pay their balance by October 15th will forfeit their reservation and deposit. After October 1st you will need to pay entire balance at time of reservation.

June 29th Fort Foster Summer Picnic

We had a glorious summer day for this year’s picnic! Fort Foster is always a primo place

for this event. This year we were blessed with great weather

AND four 11-year-old Berners in attendance. Three of them (on the right) are on their way

to the beach...Dawn Flaherty and Stanley, Nancy Bates and Ariel, and

Paul Emerson and Aria.A little later in the day, Aria’s sister Rosie joined

the fun. It was spectacular to have four of them enjoying the day, playing with the youngsters, and showing off their tricks. They all look great and are young at heart!

TILLY was released to us by a shelter

in Maine. She was surrendered to the shelter by her original owners at 18 months old because they realized they were not equipped to raise a young Berner. Tilly had never been trained or socialized. She came with many of the issues typical with untrained, unsocialized young dogs, such as excessive barking, reactivity to strangers, inability to walk normally on leash, and over-eager reactions to other dogs. Underneath her issues is an affectionate, friendly, playful and very bright Berner. In her foster home she is quickly learning basic obedience cues and is being socialized with people and other dogs. She has learned how to walk calmly on a harness. Tilly has a heartwarming smile and a flag-waving tail. Everyone who gets to know her warms to her good nature. At this time, we’re talking with a family who is interested in adopting Tilly. In the next Blatt issue, we may have Tilly’s happy-ending story!

and the costs that go with them. They fell into financial problems. They had to give up their home and move out of state to stay with relatives until they could get move into senior housing. A huge Berner would not be allowed in their new residence. Also, they simply couldn’t afford the expense of an aging Berner or even provide basic veterinary care and decent food. They were heartbroken to give up Daisy but they knew Berner Inc. would find her a good home. Daisy came into our foster program as a morbidly obese dog: her owners had been feeding her table scraps, junk food and cheap dog food and were physically incapable of exercising her. Daisy also has arthritis in her hind legs. Her condition is treatable, but her owners could not afford the medication. In her foster home, Daisy is being fed healthy food, is on a diet and is getting regular exercise. She has a sweet Berner personality and her foster parents are delighted with her. It won’t be long before Daisy has a new home! Daisy

Dogs: 1Loves: Playing in the snowEiger (BG # 72272) is our first Bernese Mountain Dog, but definitely won’t be our last. It was when my wife and I were living in Switzerland that we discovered the breed and were taken by their majestic beauty. We researched the breed and visited some local breeders we found through the national club website. After meeting four breeders, we picked Eiger between two males that his breeder offered to us from her litter of eleven. The next thing we knew, we were flying to the US with him. Eiger is now 4 years and 9 months old, and has adapted well to life in his new country. We attended our first BMDCNV event at the 2013 Fall Fun Day in Westford, MA and have been members ever since.

• Bring food and water (or use bottled water) from home. This will reduce the incidence of digestive problems when you are on the road. You may bring your dog’s regular dishes, or there are convenient travel dishes available.

• Call ahead. Many places (including campgrounds) do not allow pets. Make sure it is OK to bring your pet before you leave. There are several books on the market which contain a state-by-state listing of hotels, motels, and inns that welcome pets.

• Make sure your dog’s name tag is up-to-date and readable.

• Pack a lead and tie out. Attach the lead before you open the door for your dog’s safety.

• Do not forget your dog’s favorite toys.

Summer Traveling TipsDrs. Foster & Smith, Inc.Race Foster, DVMhttp://www.peteducation.com

If you plan on taking your dog along on vacation, that weekend get-away, or other summer traveling, here are a few things to remember:

• Pack a first aid kit for your dog. It is always a good idea to have one handy, just in case.

• Stop often on long trips to allow dogs to stretch, walk and relieve themselves.

• Clean up after your dog to keep the great outdoors great, and out of consideration for others.

• Travel on an empty stomach. Car sickness is more likely if your dog has a full stomach. If the trip is long, feed a smaller amount than normal at least two hours before you leave. Or, if traveling long distances, divide your dogs usual daily portion into smaller, more frequent portions to be fed throughout the day.

• Restrain your pet during travel in either a harness, pet seat, barrier, wire cage or plastic crate. It is the safest way to travel for both you and your dog.

• NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A HOT CAR even if you park in the shade. Pets are unable to control body temperature as efficiently as humans and just a few minutes in a hot car could cause irreversible damage or death.

Hanna, you left us far too soon. You lived life each day to its fullest, and taught us to do the same. We gladly went along for the ride and enjoyed every minute. Your captivating smile, your animated trot, your windmill tail, and that cute wiggle butt, made every moment something to see. We were joined with you at the hip, and most importantly, the heart. We miss you dearly sweet girl. You changed our lives far beyond anything we could have imagined.
