Curated by Jason Franz
Images of animals in art have existed parallel to those of humans for as long as images(and objects) have been made. Our social, creative, and psychological evolution isinextricably tied to our relationships with animals. Whether it be the taming of thewolf, resulting in 'man's best friend', the tethering of the horse which magnified thepower and geographic reach of humans, or the pursuit and eventual domestication ofherd animals which contributed to the establishment of cities and large concentrationsof people (and the growth of culture), they are all part of the trajectory of humanity tothis point in time. And all have been documented, explored, and deified throughoutthe long process by images and objects featuring animals.
But this isn't just history (and pre-history). The animal remains a powerful subject incontemporary art. So Manifest dedicated its entire exhibition space, three galleries, tofeature Bestiary, an exhibit which reveals the state of the animal in contemporary art.
For this project 410 artists submitted 985 works for consideration, setting a recordfor exhibit submisstions at Manifest. Twenty-five works by these 17 artists fromeleven states and four countries were selected by our two-part jury/curatorialprocess for presentation in the gallery and documentation in this catalog.
