Key Text: Revelation 21:1-4 (also read Revelation 21:5-22:5)

“1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away."

1. What is Heaven? (Isaiah 66:1, Matthew 6:9; 1 Peter 3:22) Heaven is the place where God dwells, where God most fully makes known his presence to bless.

Heaven is a place not just a state of mind (John 14:2-3, Hebrews 11:16)

God will make a “new earth” (2 Peter 3:10, Revelation 21:1, Isaiah 65:17) He will dwell with us and we with Him

(Revelation 21:3)

Our resurrected bodies will be part of the renewed creation (Philippians 3:20-21; 2 Cor 3:18, Colossians 3:4)

3 Things that will be there:

The Holy City, New Jerusalem

God Himself, dwelling among His people

Righteousness (1 Peter 3:13)

12 Things that will not be there:

No more sea – because all chaos and disorder (symbolised by the sea in ancient times) will be gone (Rev 21:1)

No more tears – because all hurt will be removed (Rev 21:4)

No more death – because mortality is swallowed up by life (Rev 21:4)

No more mourning – because all sorrow will be perfectly comforted (Rev 21:4)

No more crying – because joy will reign supreme

No more pain – because all diseases will be expelled (Rev 21:4)

No more thirst – because every desire will be satisfied (Rev 21:6)

No more wickedness – because all evil will be banished (Rev 21:8, 27)

No more Temple – because God will be everywhere (Rev 21:22)

No more night – because the glory of God will shine (Rev 21:23-25;22:5)

No more closed gates – because God’s door will always be open (Rev 21:25)

No more curse – because the death of Christ has lifted it (Rev:22:3)

The first coming of the Messiah is a fulfilment of the Hope that was prophesied in the Old Testament and now fulfilled in the New. The prophetess Anna was looking towards this blessed Hope. We can rejoice and celebrate because Christ has come, he has died on the cross for our sins and we have hope because He has returned to the Father and He will return again soon to establish His kingdom. This Christmas season, in spite of all the fake news circulating and all the bad news that confront us daily, we can be confident and steadfast and look forward to blessed days because HOPE has arrived.
