Otters Getting Wet and Wild by Jennifer Hoang

Junior• • •

August 3, 2013 was the day I attended my

first Key Club social, “OTTERS GETTING WET

AND WILD”. Bolsa Grande and Century Key Club were the co-hosts for this event at Garden

Grove Park. I arrived at the school at approximately one o’clock with Tammy, who is also a Key Club

member. With our poor eyesight, we spent about

five to ten minutes scouring the park for the location of the other otters. Any hint of teal we

saw, we walked towards. It was pretty funny because we had walked up to strangers a couple of

times. It was all good because we had a good laugh

before we finally found the right spot. I saw some old faces as well as new ones. I think the first thing

I did was go take pictures. I was rushed over by friends to go to the photo station. It was pretty cool

because there were props and a snazzy camera.

Afterwards, I headed over to participate in icebreakers. With that, I was able to see all of the

faces that came to the event. The icebreakers were

really fun and hilarious. Everyone laughed and smiled throughout the activities. As the icebreakers

came to an end, I was really hungry. The hot dogs were so yummy that I went in for a second one.

I’m craving some right now actually. Oh man. The

water balloon fight and tug-a-war were up next. Although I did not participate in it, it was enjoyable

to watch. People made secret plans to get to the other team, so things were really living up its name.

Otters were really getting wet and wild. Overall, I

am so glad I came to the event. It was so much to participate in activities and socialize with new

people. However, the highlight of the event was when I was reunited with an old elementary pal,

Ryan. I would have never thought to see him at the

social! I was extremely shocked and overwhelmed! Socials really do bring people together. Good

things come out of them, so I look forward to participating in more gatherings as we dig deeper

into the year!

Farewell Century Key Clubby Jacquelyn Do

This summer, Bolsa Grande Key Club worked closely with Century Key Club, the buddy

club assigned to us by our Lieutenant Governor,

Tommy Dang. Club officers from both schools sat down and had a meeting at Century High School,

going over goals to fundraise, as well as plans for each club. Over the summer, I was able to meet

many of Century's officers and was able to recognize

several of their faces at divisional events. We had planned for a social early on in the summer, and on

August 3, 2013, we carried out our plans, giving Key Clubbers a good time at the "Otters Getting

Wet and Wild" social. Both schools have put in a

tremendous effort in co-hosting this social. I can't

thank Century Key Club enough for their brilliant ideas and enthusiasm during the partnership. I

hope that they will continue to be great leaders and enjoy the remainder of this Key Club term!

Beach Clean Upby Jolyne Dang

On August 10th, 2013, Bolsa Grande Key Club volunteered for the O.C. Coastkeeper

Beach Clean-Up at Huntington Beach. Our club was not the only one there; I was surprised to see

many local people volunteering as well! We were

told to pick a partner, and were then put into groups of 4 to create teams. However, instead of

typically grouping with our friends, we were randomized into different groups. Because of this,

I was able to bond with my group, two of whom

I met during the clean-up. As a group, we were able to fill a giant bag (about the size of my body)

half-way in a mere hour, which proves how polluted our beaches are. We found a variety of

unusual waste lying around on the beach, such as

a coat hanger. This event was out of the ordinary for me, for I saw a handful of unfamiliar faces.

Luckily, I was able to socialize with all those new faces, and I’m looking forward to getting to know

them better throughout the year.

Our club will be hosting a Key Club dance on Friday, September 27, 2013. The dance, cleverly

named “DANCING IN THE DARK KNIGHT”, will be superhero-

themed and is open to people outside of our club and school. Every club member will be asked to sell two tickets to the dance starting next week. For more information, ask a club officer or our advisor, Mr.

Tonthat.

Rides, rides, rides! Lately, we have been struggling with a lack of rides. Thus, members will now

be required to provide a minimum of two rides per

semester. Failure to complete this requirement will lead to consequences such as

probation. Spirit points will still be given to ride providers. Again, contact an officer or Mr. Tonthat for

more information.

As we say goodbye to Century Key Club, we will also be welcoming our new buddy club, LA QUINTA High School. Officers will be meeting with La Quinta’s officers

soon to discuss plans for our next buddy club system.

Seniors, you will be able to receive medals this year as recognition for

your dedication to our club and service hour completion. You will need to complete a total of 50 hours, with 40 of those hours being raw service hours (which does not include spirit points from rides, articles,

DCM attendance, or pop tabs). You will be permitted to wear your medals to graduation.

As announced before, Jolyne Dang is our New class director.

Jolyne will be working alongside Vivian Leduc as the junior class director duo. Jolyne is in charge of calling half the juniors while Vivian is in charge of calling the other half. Their lists are as follows:
