Editor’s NoteDear reader,

If you’ve been keeping up with

these monthly newsletters, the first thing you will notice about this issue

is its new look. The reason behind this? I no longer have the program I have been using for the past

newsletters. Therefore, I have had to find a different program and start

anew. Unfortunately, it is impossible to retain the look of the older newsletters, but I have tried my best

to create an even better layout. With that being said, I hope you enjoy this

edition!

-Jacquelyn Do

Tech Editor Bolsa Grande High School’s Key Club continued to excel. We attended regular services, such as WADY and LEC, and wrote a total of 96 articles! New service events included Make-a-Wish Jogathon and Color Run, a definite favorite for many. We also attended May DCM at Relay for life, where we won two awards. And to end the month, we volunteered at our sponsoring Kiwanis’ corn booth at the annual Strawberry Festival. Members enjoyed husking, buttering, and selling corn for four consecutive days!

In this month...

Make-a-Wish Jogathonby Cathy Nguyen

Junior• • •

This Key Club event was different. Usually, we would work at events, but we did not. We

played a part in the Make-a-Wish Jogathon as one of the joggers, walkers, or runners. This event gives

back to the community by donating ten dollars for

each participant. I think about ten of us went. During the jogathon, we decided it was a little bit

boring just walking around the track field at Beckman High School, so we played tag as some of

us walked. It made time pass by faster. When we

were done, we explored the beautiful campus. Afterwards, Thien, Cynthia, Catherine, Tran,

Amanda, and I went swimming. We originally

wanted to go shopping, but the pool was too tempting. It was also a really hot day, so we decided

to jump in with all our clothes. It was so fun.. I remembered that Thien and Catherine didn’t want

to swim, so they captured the moments for us. We

took so many pictures and recorded so many videos of us in the pool. There were moments where we

pretended to be mermaids and just swayed in the water. It was such a fun day with everyone.

Color Runby Jenny Nguyen

Vice PresidentSophomore

On Saturday, May 11th, I attended the Color Run located at the Orange County Great

Park in Irvine. There, the runners wore white shirts, and along the course of the race, there were

different color stations (such as pink, yellow, green,

orange, and blue). At those color stations, the runners were sprayed with colored corn starch,

depending on the color of the station. At the event, our Key Club was assigned with orange. After we

had walked out to our color station, we got dirty!

Everyone ended up looking like Oompa Loompa's and Snooki's. We looked like we had gone to the

tanning salon and forgot to leave after ten hours. Despite the orange mess, everyone had fun. We

helped clean up our color station after the race

ended, for all we could see was orange. Orange was everywhere! Although it took me many showers to

get rid of the orange corn starch, it was very worthwhile.

Relay for Lifeby Jacquelyn Do

Tech EditorSophomore

On May 18, 2013, after I had dedicated my morning to a two-

hour service event and piano workshop, I attended Relay for Life

at Fountain Valley High School.

The event was much like a walk-a-thon that helped raise funds for

cancer. What makes Relay for Life a unique annual event is the fact that

some participants choose to sleep

overnight and continue their walking in the morning. I arrived at

Fountain Valley High's track field with Key Clubbers from my school

and saw many others from other

schools within our division. As soon as our LTG arrived, we had a DCM

and proceeded to start ice breakers. Ice breakers are definitely out of my

comfort zone, but I have to admit,

they were actually very fun that day. We spent the rest of the day

bonding with our fellow 4 North Key Clubbers and walking laps

around the track field. The night

ended with a movie and event ceremony. I was having too much

fun and did not sleep until 2 A.M.

May DCMby Jenny Nguyen

Vice PresidentSophomore

On Saturday, May 18th, I attended the May DCM (Division

Council Meeting,) which was my second DCM as vice president. It

was located at the division event

called Relay for Life in which people walk to fight the cause of cancer. At

the meeting, Tommy introduced the new Division Leadership Team once

more. We went through roll call,

and Bolsa was able to bring seventeen people (tied with Rancho

Alamitos High School). We also recapped old business and went

over new business. Bolsa Grande's

Key Club was able to bring home two awards from the month of

April: Club of the Month and Officer of the Month. I was

absolutely honored to have been

rewarded Officer of the Month for the month of April. I had not

expected it, and I was very proud of the club I serve as well! The

members had their spirit pumped

up once more, and I was glad that the DCM had revived their inner

spirits. I had such a fantastic time!

Corn Boothby Gianhu Nguyen

The Strawberry Festival for the year of 2013 was held on

May 24, 25, 26, and 27. Just like what Bolsa Grande Key Club has

always been doing for the past

years, we continued to volunteer at the corn booth. I had a

morning shift on Sunday, May 26, and perhaps I was too excited

the night before, I ended up

oversleeping and ran late. Friends have continuously called

my cell phone and home phone to wake me up, but being in a deep

sleep, I couldn’t hear anything or

recall hearing my phone ringing. Although I was late, when I

arrived at the booth, there was not much to do, and the time was too

early for the booth to be crowded

and popular. As the clock hits around noon time, people started

to come and especially at night, our booth attracted numerous of

people. Although I had only

signed up for the morning shift, I ended up staying for the entire

day. When my shift ended at two in the afternoon, one of the

directors asked if Amanda and I

could accompany his daughter,

Amber, on rides and such. Of course we agreed to do it. We got

free rides for the entire day. I had a lot of fun, for it was my first

time at the Strawberry Festival.

Only a little fifth grader, Amber had a great spirit in her soul. She

dragged us to all of the rides, and by the time we finished going on

every single rides one time around

the circle, we were starving. After a little rest at McDonald, back to

the rides we went. Until she had to go home, I accompanied her to

the rides she wanted to go on.

After Amber left, our corn booth attracted many customers, so I

decided to help out a little bit, and

I am very glad I did, because it was a lot of fun. From husking the

corns, to buttering the corns, to shuffling and dancing on the

buttered ground, the volunteers

and supervisors were in great spirits with the accompanied

music. My legs were very sore from standing for so long, but it

was worth it. I had a great time

volunteering at the corn booth. Not only was I able to work and

get to know the members more, it was fun serving the corns.

Presenting... OUR NEW K-KIDS CHAIR

ABOUT HIMName: Peter Nguyen

Age: 16

Birthday: March 12

Grade: Sophomore

Fun Fact: Peter is a runner (He is in both cross country and track.) and a boy scout!

WHAT IS K-KIDS? K-Kids (Kiwanis Kids) is the elementary school equivalent of Key

Club. According to kiwaniskids.org,

“In K-Kids clubs worldwide, more than 36,000 children are learning leadership through service. They're taking on the responsibility of running a K-Kids club as they plan and participate in community service projects. They assist the elderly with chores or organize community food drives. They serve their schools, raising funds for sports equipment and extracurricular activities.”

Bao Phamby Victor Nguyen

Junior• • •

Bao Pham is a purely amazing

member. He is very helpful whenever a

person needs any assistance. From

passing out water to runners during Key

Club race events to giving directions to

the restroom to people who were

completely lost, Bao is always there to

help whenever the situation calls for it.

No matter what happens, he always stays

calm and thinks out a solution to many

troubling problems. Although at times, he

may be loud and silly from time to time, it

is those same reasons why he is so fun to

be around. If you were to joke around

with him, he would have to joke around

the same way back at you. Bao has many

unique characteristics that make him who

he is; however, like all Key Clubbers at

Bolsa Grande, he has that charismatic

spirit. I consider Bao as a friend and I

know that we will continue to be friends.

I always arrive early to meetings

and I end up being stuck outside the Key

Club meeting room. I always catch Tina

attempting to sell chips. People buy it but

the bag of chips are for ants! I guess

that's why it is fifty cents. I think we

should have more events similar to

WADYs. It's nice to see familiar faces.

One cool thing about these meetings is

that every year, we get to move to a new

desk as we progress through freshman,

sophomore, junior, and senior year.

Little things like that make the meetings

that much better. I also like it when we

all say the pledge together instead of

repeating it after another. I never

understood why we couldn't have said it

all together as a whole group. Key club

always has the coolest events compared to

every club. For this term, all the board

members are girls.

I cannot wait for Key Club's

International Convention (ICON) next

year in Anaheim. I have always wanted to

go but have never been able to do so

because of how far it usually is. I am

extremely happy that it will be in

Anaheim in 2014. I cannot wait to meet

other Key Clubbers from different states!

It is going to be so awesome and amazing!

I know it is not until next year and that I

have a lot of time, but I am going to start

fundraising for it right now! I do not want

to miss out on this one in a lifetime, rare

chance to go because I fell short of

money. You will never know if this is the

only time it will be in Anaheim. How

great is that? I get to experience going to a

Key Club International Convention right

before I graduate. Oh, I just get so excited

whenever I think about the international

convention!

Backwards Dayby Quinton Ta

Sophomore• • •

Jacquelyn Do promoted the idea

this month (May) that during a meeting,

we would have "Backwards Day." And on

that day, we would have as many

members as possible wear their Division

4 North shirts or Bolsa Grande Key Club

shirts backwards. The order of the

meeting was not the same. In fact, we

started out by adjourning the meeting and

ended the meeting by calling the meeting

to order. I personally think that the

pledge that we said should have been said

exactly backwards word for word.

Unfortunately, some people did not

understand the concept that it had to be

either the Key Club Division 4 North

shirt or the Bolsa Grande Key Club shirt

that had to be backwards. So someone

like Jolyne put her hoodie on backwards

in hopes of receiving a Hershey's kiss

from Jacquelyn. I myself thought that we

could wear anything backwards. At the

end of the meeting, which was the

beginning of the meeting, I received my

division shirt, quickly put it on and

rushed to Jacquelyn. I received two

Hershey’s kisses from Jacquelyn and

happily went on my way.

Vivian Leducby Deborah Gonzalez

SophomoreThis whole week has been a crazy one,

and if it wasn’t from the help of my

awesome class advisor Vivian Leduc, I

would be dead. She is always there for me

when I need a helping hand or when I

have questions about my technological

problems. She helped me collect pop tabs

since I was running short. I still am

running short on hours. I just really

appreciate what she has done for me. I

need to buy her Starbucks. I mean, who

does not like Starbucks? Also, her dad is

cool for always providing rides and having

so much patience. I am glad she became

our Sophomore Representative because

seriously I do not know where I would

stand right now in the club. Thank you

one last time, Vivian Leduc.
