  • During the month of October, Bolsa Grande Key Club volunteered at a multitude of service projects. We attended OC Walk to Remember, RTC (Region Training Conference)/October DCM (Division Council Meeting), WADY (We Aren't Dead Yet,) Walk to End Alzheimer's, LEC (Lincoln Education Center) and the first Spirit Night. We were proud to host RTC for Region 3 on our very own campus and the event ended up being the first Key Club event for many of our freshmen!

    Vice PresidentJunior

On Saturday, October 12th, I attended the DCM, also known as

the Division Council Meeting. Bolsa Grande Key Club, the club I serve,

    was able to muster seventy-one

members to bring to the DCM! It was held at our very own school,

and it was hosted jointly with RTC (Region Training Conference).

    When discussing old business, we

switched things up and had a member speak in front of the

division instead of an officer. Catherine Truong, a three-year Key

Club member, spoke on behalf of

the club I serve. Although she was nervous, I was proud of her for

having the courage to speak in front of over a hundred people. At the

end of the meeting, Tommy, our

LTG, passed out incentives such as posters and pins for members who

    could answer trivia questions.

    RTCby Thomas Nguyen

On Saturday, October 12th, I attended my first event. RTC was

an awesome experience and I had a blast. It was at Bolsa Grande High

School and a lot of members from

different schools came. Everyone there were so opened up and

friendly, so I was comfortable introducing myself and meeting new

people. As the day went on and I

went to different classes like Key Club 101, Photography, and How to

Be a Leader, I was able to learn pretty cool skills from the LTGS. I

think my favorite part of the day was

the spirit battle in the gym. It was so awesome and fun. Everyones

screaming voices bounced off the gym walls. It was pretty cool to be

able to participate in something like

this. RTC was a crazy experience and I look forward to attending it

    again next year.

    O n O c t o b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 , B G K C volunteered for Walk to End Alzheimers at the

District. Upon arriving at the event, we signed in and were told by a coordinator to meet back at

the sign-in booth in about an hour. In the mean

time, we all scattered to explore the District. By 8:30 A.M., we had come back and waited for the

coordinator to return with instructions for us. It took longer than expected until a coordinator

actually came by, but it was apparent that we did

not mind since we all had plastic horns and thunder sticks to amuse us. After being instructed

by the long-awaited coordinator, we were paired into groups of 2-3 and were then distributed

along the 2-mile walk to cheer the walkers on. I

was fortunate enough to witness Andrew Nguyens spirited dancing, which entertained the

flood of walkers. There was not a single person who did not smile upon seeing Andrew dance.

After half an hour of cheering, we made our way

back. The event felt extremely short, seeing how we only cheered for half an hour.

  • WADYby Jenny Cao

    Junior

    On October 19, 2013, I

participated in the WADY event. It was

my first time going there, and I was

excited. It turned out to be a lot of fun. I

got the wonderful opportunity to help out

the elderly. They were very grateful to our

assistance, and I felt a lot of pride and

gratification. We got stuck on the elevator

a few times, because the heavy food cart

refused to leave the elevator. We had to

take turns to move it along the hallways.

There were a couple of people that did

not answer to our calls, and so we had to

    leave the food boxes outside their rooms;

however, we were not allowed to place the

cheese there, because their neighbors can

steal it at any given moment! We were

done surprisingly soon, and so we just

roamed around in the lobby until it was

time to go. Overall, WADY was a lot of

fun, and I would definitely sign up for it

    again.

Last week, I had the opportunity

of going to Lincoln Education Center. It

is one of our weekly services and I finally

had the time to go. At Lincoln Education

Center, I mostly took care of grading the

    Economics and Social Science folders.

Those were the easiest folders to grade

because I only had to match up words

    versus reading and understanding a

paragraph as in other subjects. To me,

    Lincoln Education Center isn't a tedious a

community service at all. We are just

taking two hours out of our day to help

out the teachers grade work packets. That

is why this year, I strongly recommend

everyone to go. It is two easy hours that

anyone can get and I think everyone

should at least go once. Volunteering at

Lincoln Education Center was fun and I

look forward to doing more community

    service throughout the year.

    Trunk-or-Treatby Rachael Yi

    Peter Nguyen, Van Nguyen, and

I visited Cook Elementary School to

advertise our new K-Kids program during

its first annual Trunk-Or-Treat event. We

didnt have a car so we had to use a cart

provided for us, but it was well worth it.

Many kids came to our stand to pick up

permission slips for K-Kids, and a lot of

them had never-ending questions for us. I

was really surprised to see so many of

them interested in our club and able to

remember all of our names from our

informational meeting. We also got to

meet the superintendent, who was just as

excited about K-Kids as we were.

Afterward, I looked around to see the

decorations of the different trunks and

admired how much effort some of these

parents put into decorating their trucks in

order to make this event memorable for

    their children.

I was glad Halloween fell on

Thursday, the day when Bolsa Key Club

holds their weekly meetings. Some people

dressed up, and I was very intrigued with

some of the costumes that our members

showed up in. Mr. Tonthat, our adviser,

dressed up as well. Some of the outfits

were really creative and interesting. The

meeting was processed in the same

manner as it has always been done. Old

events were recapped and there was an

introduction on new upcoming events. I

am looking forward to Walk to End

Alzheimer's at the Angel's Stadium. It has

been a while since I have attended that

event, so I am really excited. Also, I am

looking forward to being a project chair

with Jolyne Dang, one of the junior class

directors. I hope that by being project

chairs together, I can get to talk to and

    know her better.

    Spirit Nightby Duyen Diep

    Junior

Spirit Night is now one of my

favorite memories of Key Club. When I

first got there, I only saw Pacifica Key

Clubbers, so I hung out with them for a

while. I made several new friends from

Pacifica and other schools. We then

started rehearsing our Fall Rally cheers,

which will be stuck in my head for several

weeks. As we got closer to the end of

Spirit Night, many people left, so I

migrated over to the BGHS officers. We

were all lost in the cheers and getting

confused over the smallest things. We

ended our Spirit Night with the ice

breaker Ride That Pony. I ran several

times and did the ice breaker with many

    random people. However, after two

rounds, I was dead. All in all, Spirit

Night really made me feel that Division 4

North is an ohana. I am looking forward

to Fall Rally and more Spirit Nights to

    come!

Here are some more events we attended this month!

    MEMBER OF THE MONTH

    ABOUT HIMName: Andrew Vo

    Age: 16

    Birthday: May 3

    Grade: Junior

At Race for the Cure, Andrew proved to be the most spirited member of our cheer team. He cheered on all the runners with undying energy and spirit for two hours straight. He high-fived those participating in the race and did not once complain about how hot or tired he was. Throughout the whole event, he kept a smile on, encouraging other members to follow his example. After a short break, Andrew continued cheering on runners for another two hours. His tremendously outstanding behavior at the event amazed me and brought me to realization that although he is new, Andrew has already proven himself to be a member who is able to contribute spirit and leadership to our club. He is a true role model and has the potential to lead others by example.

Being Junior Class Director, I am very excited to work with this new edition to our board. I hope (and I know) that he will do a fantastic job as Freshmen Class Director! I wish him the very best.

  • Updates

As we move onto the month of November, many new events will come our way. K-Kids will be

making its start the first day of November and Key Club Week will come the following week. Key Club

Week will end with a third and last Spirit Night on Friday in preparation for Fall Rally on Saturday.

We will also see if our club has been able to raise $1000 in UNICEF donations to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

    FINALLY. The key caps have

arrived! They look very cute and match the otter on our divisional

T-shirts. I hope that people will find them adorable! The key cap

is so cute that my mom even

bought one for my dog's collar.

A newborn dies every nine minutes from tetanus. Over

100 million women in more than 25 countries need our help. $1.80 can protect a woman and her future newborns

    from this painful disease.
