Last year the Minister for Justice gave an apology to the Dáil for how these people were treated, given that they had placed their lives at risk to protect our freedoms. The Government has now enacted the necessary legislation to wipe the slate clean.

Labour party TD for Dublin bay north, Aodhan O Riordan said:

“One of my own constituents, Peter Mulvany,

has campaigned tirelessly to recognise the courage of those who fought against the Nazis. I am proud to have supported Peter in his work and welcome his comments that the younger generation of politicians have shown what they can do in sorting out historical hot potatoes. Today after all of his work, we will wipe yet another stain from our history.”

Minister for defence Alan Shatter TD went on

to say: “The enactment of this Bill sends an important

message to those people surviving, and the relatives of those that have since passed on. That message is you can be proud of your contribution, or your relative’s contribution, in the fight against tyranny and that this contribution is now being acknowledged by this State”

“Enactment of defence forces bill offers war veteransthe respect and dignity they deserve”

THE winners of the An Taisce Green-Schools Travel competition were announced last month, with Belgrove Senior Boys School being awarded the title of Ireland’s Travel School of the Year for 2013, and St. Colmcille’s Senior National School, Knocklyon coming out on top in the Cycling category.

The awards took place in Dublin’s Croke Park, as Mr. Alan Kelly, T.D. Minister Of State, with special responsibility for Public and Commuter Transport, presented prizes, trophies and certificates of achievement to the winning students for the relevant categories.

In order to be eligible for this year’s prizes, entrants were required to explain why their school deserved the title of Ireland’s Travel School of the Year 2013, a claim they were asked to back up with statistics showing their school’s shift from non-sustainable to sustainable modes of transport.

Minister Kelly admitted that he was impressed by the amount of students which had shown a

keen interest in sustainable transport, saying: “seeing the innovative ways these students have taken up the challenge of making their commute to and from school active and sustainable is very encouraging. The schools have shown that, regardless of whether your school is located in an urban or rural environment, sustainable transport is an option.”

Overall, the competition this year had seven category winners and seven runners-up, as awards were presented to schools for their outstanding work promoting particular modes of transport which included: walking, cycling, park ‘n’ stride, carpooling and a combination of modes.

Green-Schools Travel officer, Kathryn Poxon was full of praise for St. Colmcille’s Senior National School, saying: “St Colmcille’s got their Green Flag for Travel in 2009 and have since expanded their Travel programme. The school’s biggest achievement has been in encouraging safe cycling to school and their most recent

surveys show that cycling has increased from five per cent to 30 per cent of the school population. On one of their COW days, they broke records and had over 400 cyclists.

“They even have an X factor style Green-School song contest to celebrate the Green-School themes. St Colmcille’s, under the stewardship of their enthusiastic Green-Schools coordinator Annmarie O’Gara have truly taken hold of the Travel theme and run or even ‘cycled’ off with it!” she concluded.

Judges awarded Belgrove Senior Boys School the overall title due to their creative mix of projects, events and actions which have led to 88 per cent of their pupils travelling to the school in a sustainable way.

Other competition winners included Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork, which took home the title of ‘Walking School of the Year’.

THE circulation of the new series of euro notes has begun with the introduction of the new €5 note in May 2013.

This is the beginning of the new phase of ‘Europa series’ of banks notes that will gradually come into effect over the next year. The new € 5 note is the same size and has similar appearance to the previous note but has different design features.

These include a portrait watermark of the Greek goddess Europa, raised lines along the sides of the note, an emerald colour number and a portrait hologram of

Europa. The note will have a lifespan of 13 months. The old €5 euro note will slowly be withdrawn from trading but will remain legal tender until the announcement is made. The new €5 notes were produced in 2012 and have been the first change to the euro notes since their introduction over ten years ago. In an attempt to ease the public into the transition, the ECB has made a video, ‘The Euro: Our Money’, containing information about the switch. It is available on the ECB’s official website and is in 22 of the EU languages.

One of the reasons the EU has given the currency a facelift is to prevent forgery. Nearly 300, 000 fake notes were removed from circulation at the second half of 2012 and in total, 531,000 counterfeit notes were taken out of circulation last year, with a value of €26.8 million, a decrease in volume of more than 12% from 2011. The ECB has encouraged people to use the ‘feel, look and tilt’ method to check their money is not counterfeit. A new 10-euro note is said to be unveiled for next year, with the 20-euro set to follow in 2015.

Sir Alex bows out after 26 years26 YEARS. 1,498 GAMES871 WINS. 330 DRAWS260 DEFEATS 38 TROPHIES

THE football world has being paying tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson, who has decided to step down after 27 years at Manchester United. The news that the Scot would retire after Manchester United’s final game against West Brom has sent shockwaves throughout the world of football.

After the news broke last Wednesday, Ferguson released a statement stating ‘’The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It’s the right time, it was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest way possible and I believe I have done so.”

Ferguson who took over at old Trafford on November 1986, has not only surpassed the expectations set to him by the fans and the club, but has set the standard for future managers at Manchester United. His no nonsense approach on and off the field and his ability

to successfully build team after team, and to compete in domestic and European competitions, has made him one of the most, if not the most successful manager the world has ever seen.

One of his greatest moments as Manchester United ‘s manager was the 98-99 season, leading United to a memorable treble which really set the standard for the following years at Old Trafford.

Peter Schmeichel who had 9 years under Sir Alex, including the treble winning season has described Fergusons’s decision to retire as a “bombshell”. Stating “yesterday I was really happy, with what he had done this season, now this, I’m disappointed and very sad.” The Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill also has praised working with Ferguson, saying it was the “greatest experience” of his working life. Gill went on to say, “I have had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely

w

with Sir Alex for 16 unforgettable years, through the treble, the countless doubles and numerous signings.

With the news regarding the long serving manager was to retire, thoughts were turned to who his successor would be. David Moyes was made favourite by most pundits and bookmakers, but was in good company with names like Jose Mourinho and former Red Devil Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also in the hat. But last Thursday it was announced that Moyes would take charge at Old Trafford from July 1st. The 50 year old Scot has signed a six year contract, Moyes told the Manchester United official website “it’s a great honour to be asked to be the next Manchester United manager.

I am delighted Sir Alex saw fit

to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the football club.”

Moyes who took charge at Everton in 2002 has successfully kept them in the top eight of the Premier League with not much of a budget, and in 2005 leading them to fourth in the Premier League, securing them a place in the Champions League qualifier.

Sir Alex later told the official website that David Moyes “has all the quality we’d expect of a manager of the club”. It remains to be seen whether David Moyes will be a success at Manchester United but one things for certain the football world will all be watching.

FERGIE TIME – FIVE OF THE BEST MATCHES FROM HIS MANAGERIAL CAREER AT MANCHESTER UNITED1990 – vs Crystal Palace (FA Cup Final Replay) 1-0The unlikely cup winning goal came from full-back, Lee Martin. This was the night when Ferguson won his first major trophy with United.1993 – vs Sheffield Wednesday (Premier League) 2-1By April, the league had become a two

horse race between Villa and United. An injury time winner from the captain Steve Bruce (also the scorer of United’s first), was a significant moment in Ferguson’s first league triumph. 1999 – vs Juventus (Champions League SF) 3-2When Ferguson’s men looked down out at 2-0 down against the ‘Bianconeri’,this

will be remembered for the towering moment of Roy Keane climbing for a headed goal, that regained United’s belief at 2-1 down. United sent a message to the rest of European football.1999 – vs Bayern Munich (Champions League final) 2-1The dramatic match that gave United

their famous ‘treble’. Maybe Bayern should have sealed this final before the 90th minute, but this was a prime example of the legendary ‘never say die’ attitude of teams under Ferguson. Kings of Europe for the second time.2009 – vs Aston Villa (Premier League) 3-2Federico Macheda’s career will likely be

best remembered for the man who hit a vital injury time winner for United, in the final weeks of the league campaign. Villa were 2-1 up at one point, in what was another ‘never say die’ performance from Ferguson’s men.

THE stream in Deansgrange has been a flood risk for quite some time now and the Dun Laoghaire/ Rathdown County Council had submitted an application for funding under the Minor Flood Mitigation & Coastal Protection Scheme to realign the embankment.

Fine Gael Dun Laoghaire Deputy Mary Mitchell O’Connor is delighted with the announcement of the funds being released for the works to be carried out on the stream. €148,500 has been designated for the stream. “Confirmation has now been given that a total of €148,500 is to be made available for the works to be carried out. This funding and the works it will facilitate are to be

welcomed.” Mary said speaking of the funds. The Dun Laoghaire County Council Manager has also launched an investigation into the underlining causes of the flood event at Old Connaught Avenue. “…The commitment if the Dun Laoghaire County Council to address the flooding in the Monkstown area. The underlying causes of the flood event at Old Connaught Avenue is also being investigated.” Mary continued.

It’s crucial for the County Council in Dun Laoghaire and Rathdown to keep on top of the flooding situation and maintain our local streams and waterways to alleviate the risk of flooding while also enhancing the natural

beauty of the area. “It also reinforces the natural beauty which so many of us take for granted.”

It’s a good sign to see the Government dedicating funds to such works as embankment realignment even when the budget is so tight, and the work on the Deansgrange stream will surely put the surrounding residents minds at ease for now and in the future.

“I am delighted this money is being made available, despite the constraints on the public purse. The realignment of the embankment will help to preserve the Deansgrange stream, ensuring that it is maintained as it should into the future.”

Fall in water standards across top Irish bathing spotsAccording to environmental watchdogs, 21 Irish bathing spots have been stripped of top marks for quality water due to last year’s uncharacteristically wet summer.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that four of the country’s 136 most popular swimming areas including Fountainstown in Cork, Rush in north Dublin, Ballyheigue in Kerry and Clifden in Galway were given a lower grading after they had failed to meet adequate standards.

Run-off from farmland sprayed with slurry and manure or saturated ground where cows, sheep and horses graze was mostly to blame for the poor standards, according to the EPA.

The EPA has also stated that the results in Ireland have been similar to those in the UK where rains wreaked havoc with quality at 10% of beaches. A spokesperson for the EPA has said: “The fall is disappointing but I’m surprised it was not more. At times the rain was the equivalent of biblical proportions,”

“Under the EPA rules there is a 5% risk of picking up an illness or infection if you swim in water failing to meet the mandatory standards. But you are probably at greater risk

of catching a cold on a bus on the way,” they concluded.

Experts suggest that it is sunshine which kills off bacteria which is caused on beaches due to faeces, and out of 107 days in the May to September bathing season in Ireland it rained for 80 of these. The beaches which were worst affected by this issue were located in Cork and Kerry due to the Atlantic weather systems.

Local councils have been praised by the EPA for closing beaches at risk of causing infections to users. Clifden beach was recently closed to swimmers due to long-running problems with discharges from sewage works, and it is reported that it will not be open again to the public until 2015. Beaches in Ballyheigue and Rush have also failed tests after samples suggested that these beaches exceeded E. coli limits.

Some of the few beaches which managed to avoid the dip in quality ratings were located in the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area, Sligo area and the Leitrim County Council area.

Offshore Wind Farm Plannedfor Kish andBray Banks145 wind turbines are currently proposed for development, 10km off the coast of Dublin and Wicklow.

The Dublin Array development is to be located on the Kish and Bray Banks and will consist of 145 wind turbines running north-south along the banks. The project is being developed by Saorgus Energy Ltd. and the plans are available now for public consultation.

The Kish and Bray Banks are currently utilised for commercial shipping and fishing and also for leisure boating. Both Banks are home to a number of wildlife such as the Fulmar, Razorbills, Manx Shearwater, Northern Gannet, Cormorant and the Little Gull. The Kish Bank has been earmarked as

a designated Natura 2000 site, an EU wide network for nature protection, and there is potential for human disturbances to feeding and breeding, as well as to habitat loss, during and after construction. Project completion is proposed to take a period of three years. According to the Dublin Array Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) there is “sufficient evidence to determine that the proposed development will not have an adverse effect on the integrity of the Natura 2000 sites.”

The projects plans and EIS are available for public view, until June 11th, at Dun Laoghaire Public Library and Howth Public Library and also at the Garda Stations in both Bray and Greystones.

VARIOUS Irish singers will perform for a special concert in aid of Christy Dignam on June 21st in the Olympia Theatre on Dame Street. All money raised by the concert will go towards Christy’s medical bills.

Artists who will be performing on the night include Danny O’Reilly from The Coronas, Bressie, Paul Brady, Jerry Fish, The Horslips, Mary Black, Westlife’s Mark Feehily, Gavin Friday and many more.

Tickets for the gig went on sale on May 10th and sold out almost instantly with fans eager to support Aslan’s frontman. Each artist will pick their favourite song by Aslan and perform it with the band.

Christy was discharged from Beaumont Hospital on Monday 6th May after going through chemo-therapy for blood cancer.

The singer hopes to be well enough to attend this once off concert and there’s no doubt that it will be an amazing night.

Phil Lynott Statue VandalisedTHE statue of Phil Lynott, lead singer of Thin Lizzy, was vandalised in the early hours of Saturday 5th May. The statue was erected on Harry Street in 2005 to commemorate the singer and musician. Two men in their twenties were being held by the Gardaí as they were said to have some connection with the damage caused to the statue.

The statue was apparently pushed over by the two men. It suffered from cracks and has been taken away to be mended. The two men were released by the Gardaí without charge.

Dog fouling is fast becoming a health risk to the public and communities in Ireland.

Speaking at the launch of the Green Dog Walkers programme in Sean Walsh park in Tallaght, Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cathal King said it was the duty of dog walkers to be mindful of other people when walking their dogs.

“Dog fouling is a very serious health issue. Young children are particularly at risk. Dog owners should take responsibility for their dogs and make sure they clean up after their dog. The Green Dog Walkers programme is a great way to raise awareness of the way to look after your dog. I look forward to meeting lots of green dog walkers in the County.”

Green Dog Walkers is a regional programme that aims to engage with communities in a friendly, non-confrontational manner in a way that will change attitudes about

dog fouling in South County Dublin. The initiative is a volunteer programme with hopes that other communities will copy the model. Volunteers with the programme will wear a green arm band. Some of their goals for the initiative include getting people to: clean up after their dog, carry a waste bag, to lend waste bags to fellow dog walkers and to remind others to clean up after their dogs.

Dog fouling is a health risk to people and especially to young children as excrement on the roads and paths can spread toxocariasis. Toxocariasis is of the roundworm toxocara canis. The parasite can be found in grass or sand contaminated with dog faeces. If swallowed or handled, it can result in an infection that can last up to 24 months. Symptoms include dizziness, ache, asthma and possibly seizures. Children between 18 months and five years are most commonly

affected.Green Dog Walkers aim to reduce the

amount of dog fouling and lessen the risk of contamination. A representative from Tallaght Hospital spoke at their delight at the new initiative.

“We welcome the launch of the Green Dog Walking Initiative. We support the objective to improve our local environment by the responsible management of dog fouling by dog owners. We believe this initiative will help enhance the wellbeing of our community by reducing the risk of infection posed by dog fouling”.

Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council, Meath County Council and Wicklow County Council will also be involved in the Green Dog Walkers programme.

IN a statement released, Richard Boyd Barrett TD, expressed grave concern over the restrictive and punitive nature of the proposed Bill for the Protection of Life During Pregnancy 2013.

The proposed bill requires a potential 2 panels of 3 doctors before a suicidal woman would be allowed an abortion in Ireland. The number of doctors and the requirement for unanimity will result in lengthy delays which are problematic in pregnancy and will also put far too much pressure on already distressed women. It effectively means that 2 out of 6 doctors would be sufficient to veto an abortion for a pregnant woman. The bills requirement for an obstetrician to be involved in adjudicating on suicide risk is also nonsensical. The bill requires 1 doctor to assess a woman in case of medical emergency but 3 doctors in the case of suicide which implies that suicide is not considered by this bill to be a medical emergency.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled, in the ABC judgement that the government as well as giving legislative effect to the X case judgment had to ensure that there was real access to abortion for Irish women. This bill clearly fails to meet this requirement. The proposal for a 14

year sentence for “intentionally performing or effecting an abortion” is draconian and absurd in the context that just 60 kms away in Holyhead, this is perfectly legal.

Richard Boyd Barrett said, “This proposed legislation is an enormous missed opportunity. It is an utter disgrace that after 21 years, two referenda, Oireachtas hearings, an expert group and the tragic cases of Savita Halappanavar, X, A, B and C, what we have ended up with is punitive, restrictive and backward legislation. This is clearly driven by a desire to appease the conservative Fine Gael back-benchers. The demand for unanimity on both panels makes this proposal unworkable and means that many women will simply be denied abortion services adding to their distress and potentially causing further risk to the life or health of the pregnant woman.”

“The idea that Labour Party TD’s, who refused to vote for the Medical Treatment Bill 2012, as proposed by Clare Daly and supported by People Before Profit, to go to second stage on the basis that it was too restrictive, are now going to support this far more restrictive bill that includes a draconian 14 year sentence is laughable.”

“This proposed bill raises more questions than it answers. The government’s own

Expert Group Report said that no more than two doctors were sufficient to make a clinical decision on the risks to a woman’s life because of a physical or mental health condition. Why have they ignored the recommendations of their own Expert Group?

Why, for example, is an obstetrician required to assess whether a woman is at risk of suicide? What if the obstetrician disagrees with the psychiatrists on the issue of suicide? What if the 2 psychiatrists disagree? Why is suicide not a medical emergency?

This proposed bill is utterly unworkable and would just result in the status quo remaining where thousands of women travel to England and Holland every year to avail of a straightforward medical procedure.”

“This so called ‘Legislation for X’, ironically would by no means guarantee, that in the tragic circumstances of the x case itself, where a 14 year old child was raped, pregnant and suicidal following being refused an abortion, that this child would have been allowed to terminate the pregnancy in this country. It is also disappointing that the government did not use this opportunity to legislate for Fatal Foetal Abnormalities, Rape and Child Sexual Abuse.”

The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

“The extraordinary story of the people and the passions that fought St. Matthew’s boxing club out of the school toilets and into the wider community’s physical health battle”

The Documentary shows the journey and the passions of the people who set up the boxing club over 30 years ago in the toilets of a primary school, to securing its own club house through the drive and determination of a few good men including Stephen Maher a founder, former coach and Treasurer. The battle now continues on to now secure a female shower room and this new battle is spearheaded by another young man Robbie Murray a former undefeated Irish professional boxing champion who had started his journey in St Matthews boxing club at the age of nine with Chronic Asthma and spending a lot of his childhood in and out of children’s hospitals.

With the help and guidance of Stephen Maher he went on to achieve what many would have considered the impossible.

Now retired from the world of

professional boxing he operates as a personal trainer and high performance coach www.robbiesfitness.com. He is also full time manager of St Matthews boxing club and done a white collar boxing night in the club to start the fundraising process for a ladies shower room. “In documentary he speaks about Katie Taylor and the demand they have to get a female shower room to ensure girls also get the opportunity to engage in the sport of boxing….

The Film was shown in Blanchardstown cinema on the 10th of May to a sold out cinema of club supporters who showed their appreciation with a standing ovation at the end….

Robert also linked up with the Asthma society of Ireland to promote health awareness for world Asthma day. He spoke with passers by at the mobile clinic in Blanchardstown cente with Asthma nurse Francis Guiney as well as doing radio interviews with her to promote health awareness.

Top TipsExam times are just around the corner. Heres a collection of tips to help you through these stressful times. Hope it helps, and good luck to everyonedoing exams in the next few months!

Review your notes within 12 hours of getting out of class.

This is probably the best tip out of the entire article because of how effective it is. When you get out of class, in just 24 hours you will forget up to 80% of the details even if you understood every-thing just fine during the class/lecture. However, if you review your notes later that day, the information will be stored in your long term memory! When you go over your notes, improve upon them and circle things you don’t understand. Find the answers to your questions until you figure out everything completely before closing the books.

The importance of finding a place free of distractions.

Find a quiet place to study that’s not full of distractions. If your home or family is full of crazy, then get out of there. Study in your car. Study on the lawn. Study at the beach. Study in the library. Whatever works for you, go there, and study everyday. If you’re distracted by people watching, be honest with yourself and don’t go in busy places.

How to avoid falling asleep while starting to read something.

First of all your posture is very important. If you go and lie down on a couch to read a book, is it any mystery why you feel sleepy instantly? You’re lying on a couch! Sit up in a chair and read on a table. Immediately start to highlight, underline or circle keywords to keep your mind active.

How to deal with music while studying.

I used to think music helped me study, but all it did was provide a distraction for me to skip tracks or look for new music. Get some ear plugs to reduce the auditory distractions. They work really, really, really well. If you need music, find something you can listen to, but not be distracted by. Vocals will often detract from what you are trying to read so go for ambient or instrumental music

How to memorize like a MACHINE.

Flashcards are incredibly good at helping you memorize. Just go buy stacks of index cards and start filling them out with definitions, words, chemical names, formulas, anything you need no matter how simple or detailed! They work really well because you are essentially testing yourself while you use them and it will raise your confidence level.

Use mnemonics to help remember lists. The most common mnemonic is to take the first letter of each list item and make an acronym, sentence or name out of it. For example, Roy G Biv is commonly used to memorize the order of the seven colours of the rainbow.

Get a grip on procrastination.

If you’re having issues with procrastination, stay focused with this web-site: www.magicworkcycle.com. Set the work time to 1 hour and the play time to 10 minutes. The idea here is to give yourself short breaks so you don’t burn out. You don’t have to study for 3 hours non-stop. And guess what? IT WORKS.

Always have water and some food with you.

I don’t know what it is about studying, maybe it’s because the brain is 90% water, but I’m always drinking water when I’m doing it. In addition to drinking water more often, bring some food so that you could keep going when, not if, you get hungry. If you go on for too long without food, your blood sugar drops and you will be easily confused and studying becomes more difficult than it needs to be.

The insane stress of cramming.

If you are studying on the day of the exam you will notice that you will feel like you are not catching up no matter how much you go over. As testing time gets closer on that day, you will get more and more stressed out. The amount of anxiety and stress from cramming, even when you are quite prepared, is astounding.

ALL THIS MEANS NOTHING IF YOU DON’T FOCUS.

There’s nothing more messed up with the young generation than their short attention span due to the flurry of distractions everywhere. People thought things got bad when TV came about but apparently that’s nothing compared to the Internet and mobile phones. It’s up to you to improve upon yourself and deal with it because these things aren’t going to disappear!

You NEED to focus. You MUST focus. That means when it’s time to study, you have to do that and only that. You’re not going to get anywhere if you study for five minutes then go on Facebook and then go back to studying. I recommend reducing the clutter on your desk, put your phone away, and concentrate for a solid hour on nothing but your work. That’s it! Now go and study!

Now go ahead, set aside some study time and get to it!

Also, PLEASE remember to get your sleep! Your study time won’t be worth much if you’re tired all the time. Even if you feel okay on just 5–6 hours of sleep, you may not realize that you’re operating at just 70% of your full ability!

THE year is 1916, the GPO is engulfed in flames as a young Michael Collins and his fellow rebels clear a path in their retreat to Moore Street. The rebels are injured and remain under fire as they try to escape the burning GPO. Among the lanes and shops of Moore Street, O’Rahilly lies dying in a doorway writing a farewell letter to his wife, as the remaining leaders of the rising discuss their heartbreaking options in the Plunkett butcher shop at 16 Moore Street. The fight rages on as the 300 odd men try to get to the safety of the Moore Street buildings while under British fire and at 10 Moore Street the Pearse brothers spend their last night of freedom before they surrender along with a badly injured James Connolly and the remaining rebel leaders. Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell bravely leaves 16 Moore Street with a white flag to discuss the terms of their unconditional surrender, the brave men and women were lead away from the cobbles and lanes of Moore street either to Kilmainham Gaol or to a court martial and then a firing squad.

If the buildings could talk they would tell us the harrowing story of the final hours of the 1916 rising, they serve as a link to our past and a reminder of what our ancestors did for our freedom, Moore

Street is part of our history and is the last link we have to the rising, as Liberty Hall no longer exists, the GPO has been reconstructed and the building where the seven leaders of the rising signed the proclamation, Tom Clarke, Padraig Pearse, James Connolly, Joseph Plunkett, Thomas MacDonagh and Eamonn Ceannt, is simply gone and is only commemorated by a tarnished and easily overlooked plaque. Moore Street is our last true connection with the Martyrs of the Easter Rising.

Over the many years Moore Street has hosted lively market stalls, has survived wars and even served as battlefield during our fight for independence, but now in 2013 just 3 years away from the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising, Moore Street lies in a disrepair state after years of neglect and the once proud street now just serves as quiet, gentle reminder of the years gone telling us not to forget, while still housing the few dwindling stalls.

But the historic street is now under threat by commercial development; Gerry Adams TD and President of Sinn Féin has called upon the Government to intervene and protect Moore Street by removing it from the possession of Charted Ireland. Charted Ireland owns 14- 17 Moore Street plus the lanes and buildings behind it and

also part of Upper O’Connell Street. They wish to demolish most of Moore Street and build a gigantic shopping centre that would tower over the remaining buildings, but surely the last thing we need in the City Centre is yet another shopping centre. In these hard economic times we as a nation should be looking back on our past for the strength and rebellion nature that won us our freedom, not demolishing it and replacing with another useless mall.

Moore Street should be revitalised not torn down as it simply wouldn’t be Dublin without it. We’ve moved on from the hay day of the street but we should still celebrate it existence not banish it to our memories. The street serves as a living monument to Irish history, a place where tourists can visit and experience old Ireland, the Dublin of our ancestors.

Our ever changing Ireland of these modern times is under huge pressure, as taxes rise, our homes are threatened and our jobs lost as we struggle to care for our families. We as a people seem to have more or less lost our way and need a reminder and memorial where we can see that if our ancestors could live and fight for us, then we can live, restore and fight for our future descendants.

Save Moore Street! It’s our history, our past and should be part of our future

ACCORDING to new research, middle class professionals who drink at home are becoming the biggest problem drinkers, as they ignore health warnings given by experts.

The study, conducted by researchers from Newcastle University and the University of Sunderland, and published by the BMC Public Health journal, is based on a study looking at just 49 ‘white collar’ people’s attitudes towards alcohol consumption, as five small groups were interviewed in a focus group setting.

The most noticeable findings from these focus groups were that middle professionals see problem drinking as something that was seen to happen to other people – such as teenagers or binge drinkers in pubs, and that if regular alcohol consumption did not significantly disrupt day-to-day functioning (such as in work or parenting skills) or lower social standards, then it was acceptable and harm-free.

Dr Lyn Brierley-Jones, who was part of the research team for the study notes that its results show a cause for concern saying: “These findings suggest that current public health interventions have not been effective in engaging this group who are likely to drink at unhealthy levels but be highly resistant to reducing their alcohol

consumption – especially as they do not consider their use to be problematic unless it impairs their capacity to fulfil responsibilities or function at work".

Researchers who conducted the study also stated that the findings show that there is a need for an overhaul of government messages about safe drinking, which currently focus more on the impact of binge drinking and anti-social behaviour.

Brierley-Jones continued on by saying: “There has been this perception that binge drinking is worse than regular drinking, but that is not the case. It is just that one is visible, while regular drinking is hidden and is not stigmatised in the same way. Home drinkers justify their drinking and even perceive it to be a good thing and beneficial. It has all these positive connotations and that adds to the public health problem.”

The report concluded by stressing that regularly exceeding the recommended daily amounts for alcohol can harm your health, and that it is not where you drink, why you drink, or who you drink with that matters; It is how much you drink.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their

own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Starring: Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto

Verdict: Hype and excitement has shrouded this project since the release of Star Trek (2009), the first instalment of this rejuvenated franchise. And I have to say don’t believe the hype.

Visually, this movie is amazing, with its big CGI scenes and 3D that’s as good as anything you are going to see. But it seems they have missed out on one important factor in making a movie, and that is script and story. This is where the movie falls down in my eyes.

Every single twist and turn can be spotted

coming a mile away. They try to build up tension in scenes, but it’s hard to get sucked in, as you know exactly where it’s going and what’s coming next.

The acting is average at best. Even the usually magnificent Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) over-acts the hell out of his role as he tries to be sinister and ruthless. Karl Urban who plays “Bones” is by far the worst thing in this movie. I understand he is trying to portray the original character but it comes across as a very bad impersonation.

I’m not sure if Trekkies are going to love or hate this, but for me, who I have to admit is a huge sci

fi fan, this was a huge let down. Set phasers to disappointment.

If you don’t care much about script and just want to see lots of CGI and lens Flare (this is what director J.J. Abrams does best) then you are in for a treat. Everyone else should probably just stay away. No matter what, this is going to be a huge success, and I’m sure we will see several more movies in the franchise in the coming years.

21 And Over (2013)

When Straight-A college student Jeff Chang’s two best friends take him out for his 21st birthday on

the night before an important medical school interview, what was supposed to be a quick beer becomes a night of humiliation, over indulgence and utter debauchery.

Starring: Miles Teller, Justin Chon, Sarah Wright

Verdict: The Hangover was a teen movie for adults, and now the writers of The Hangover have come out with The Hangover for teens – or young adults, at least. It reverse engineers the genre to a large extent, so it’s shocking how many of the clichés of teen comedy the

writers have managed to squeeze into 21 & Over.

Writer-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore may as well change their names to “the writers of The Hangover” because that’s how they’re trying to sell this movie. But the marketing conveniently forgets that they’re also writers of Four Christmases, Ghost of Girlfriends Past, The Hangover Part II and The Change-Up. Though its premise derives shamelessly from the former success, this 20-something comedy has more in common with the rest of their work.

Not as hateful as Project X, the crap heap that keeps this just above the bottom of the pile, but it plays very closely to the already-tired Hangover formula, and the laughs are very few indeed. It has over-the-top gags and cursing, stupid characters and a very messy script. 21 & Over is, not surprisingly, a very disappointing film. It starts out pretty funny. Then in its second and third act it falls flat on its unfunny face. With its annoying characters, script, direction, and acting, 21 & Over is just another movie that shouldn’t have been made.

man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Sceptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Reese Witherspoon

Verdict: It’s a rare privilege nowadays to find something genuine and altogether unique at the movies. Rarer still is finding that and actually being entertained. This film is one of those rare gems. This one is a must see for any movie goer who enjoys story driven, dialogue rich, deep character study with simply amazing performances, all wrapped up into one great story.

The children alone that lead this cast have very bright futures in film, should that be their choice. Matthew McConaughhey who to me is a very underrated actor, even though he starred in movies like Dazed and Confused(1993), A Time to Kill(1996), The Lincoln Lawyer(2011) and recently in the brilliant Killer Joe(2011), is excellent in this and seems like he gets better with each role.

If you liked Director/Writer Jeff Nicols previous movie “Take Shelter” then go see this movie. You won’t be disappointed.

MINISTER for Education Ruairí Quinn, has been asked to address the Seanad about his comments on using part of the funding for child benefit, to fund a second free year of pre-school education.

Child benefit payments could be cut again in order to fund an extra pre-school year, which would include improved pre-school education; it has been suggested by Education Minister Ruairi Quinn.

At the moment we have one free pre-school year. However Mr Quinn has indicated the possibility that part of the €2bn spent on child benefit annually, could be put towards a second free pre-school year.

Both the Social Protection Minister Joan Burton and the Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald have suggested that if we could get a second free year, it would have

a dramatic effect on the life opportunities available to young people, particularly those from disadvantaged areas.

International studies have shown that the pre-school year is important but makes the year more important and worthwhile is trained pre-school teachers with education qualifications at level 5 and level 6.

Minister Quinn has said “A child coming from a middle-income, middle class type family where there is normal discourse will have a vocabulary three times the size of a young person coming from a disadvantaged background where there are very poor levels of literacy and very poor levels of conversation”

Parents Against Cuts to Child Benefit spokeswoman Niamh Ui Cheallaigh has said: "He's robbing Peter to pay Paul. It

won't be very welcome to hear this for a lot of families, they will be horrified, to say the least."

Fianna Fail Minister Marc MacSharry said; that this debate should be closed as the child benefit payment is “not a luxury” and that to use some of the funding in other areas would be “short-sighted”.

Mr Quinn’s proposal has not gone down well with either Fergus Finlay chief executive of children’s charity Barnardos or the National Women’s Council's Orla O’Connor.

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has reportedly told his colleagues in the Labour party that no further cuts will be made to child benefit.

A ‘SNEAKY’ provision in the property tax legislation means Dublin homeowners could face a hike in their property tax in just one year’s time, according to Fianna Fáil Dundrum Local Area Representative Sarah Ryan.

Ms. Ryan has accused Fine Gael and Labour of waiting until after next year’s local elections before opening the door for a property tax hike.

“Fine Gael and Labour’s Family Home Tax has been deeply flawed from the beginning and discriminates heavily against Dublin homeowners. Just as families figure out how much they will have to pay and how they will afford it, they now learn it could go up significantly in just one year’s time,” the Fianna Fáil representative said.

“South Dublin homeowners have been hit with the highest property tax bills in the country. Families here are already paying over the odds for a home they cannot afford. Many have paid hefty stamp duty on their homes, are now deep in negative equity and

struggling to pay their mortgage. Slapping an additional tax on top of all of that, and including a sneaky provision for an early tax hike, brings this whole plan to a new level of unfairness.”

Homes valued between €350,000 to €400,000 could see an increase of over €100 from €675 to €776, while homes valued between €550,000 and €600,00 will see their property tax bills jump from €1,035 next year to €1,190.

Sarah Ryan is blaming the Government for keeping the possibility of such an increase ‘under the radar.’

“Until last week, it was widely understood that the house valuation and the rate of tax would be fixed for three years. This legislation was rushed through the Dáil with no time for proper debate on its details. Meanwhile, the Revenue booklet on the tax was misleading, giving the impression that the property tax would remain fixed for three years.

“It comes down to the fact that Fine Gael

and Labour want people to pay more tax for fewer services. The Government says this tax will fund local services, while at the same time services in our communities are being cut and basic household bills are on the increase.”

Minimum Pricing For Alcohol Introduced in ScotlandSCOTLAND’S Supreme Civil court has recently brought in a minimum price

for alcohol. Despite what organisations associated with the alcohol industry in Scotland said, it is not incompatible with EU law to introduce a minimum pricing for alcohol.

Fine Gael Dublin Senator, Catherine Noone states that in her opinion if Ireland introduced that law it would help reduce the amount of alcohol being consumed by our citizens. Noone also finds it worrying that shops and supermarkets around the country are lowering their price of alcohol in order to get more customers.

Alcohol abuse brings more than an extra

€1 billion on the healthcare system per annum. Not only that but Noone brought up the very serious matter of suicide and self-harm caused by alcohol abuse.

The Steering Group report of last year, stated several different ways of reducing the amount of alcohol consumption in the country. They also suggested enforcing the law of minimum pricing to Ireland.

Noone said that she intends to bring up this matter of minimum pricing with the Minister for Health, as she would like to know what advance the Government has made about this vital issue.

The Ford Fiesta Van and Ford Ranger have been named (respectively) Continental

Irish Car-Derived Van of the Year and Continental Irish Commercial / SUV of the Year for 2013. These category awards complete a hat-trick and a clean sweep of the Irish Van of the Year awards for 2013, as the Ford Transit Custom took the overall Irish Van of the Year title at the main awards event last November.

Eddie Murphy, Chairman and

Managing Director of Ford Ireland said. “We are delighted with our three successes in the Irish Van of the Year awards – this is a great endorsement of our commercial vehicle line up and underlines why Ford vans continue to be Ireland’s favourite work vehicles”.

The Continental Irish Van of the Year awards are voted on by an expert jury of members of the Irish Motoring Writer’s Association (IMWA).

New Transit Custom, which was also crowned International Van of the

Year for 2013, is available with a range of advanced and economical 2.2 litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engines, all of which come with a six speed manual transmission. Combined with Ford ECOnetic Technologies, these engines lower the cost of ownership, reduce the van’s impact on the environment and meet stringent Euro Stage V emissions standards.

With its practical 1.0 cubic metre load space, the Fiesta Van offers businesses an adaptable van with

classic Fiesta driver appeal. The Fiesta Van powertrain choice now includes the new 75 PS 1.5-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel, alongside the 95 PS 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel and 82 PS 1.25-litre Duratec petrol units.

In addition to the Irish Commercial / SUV of the Year title, the Ford Ranger was also named International Pick Up of the Year for 2013. In their award citation the panel of judges for the International award, consisting of experienced van journalists from

specialist publications across Europe, stated: "The Ford Ranger is a great all-rounder, combining the perfect blend of on-road comfort and stability with off-road capability."

Unleash each character’s unique super powers with individual move-sets and environmental interactions. Fight through multi-tiered fighting arenas by hurling opponents through buildings and launching them off cliffs.

Available now on all formats.

To say the videogame industry is in a transition phase is putting it gently. Physical videogame sales have been on a continual decline, while console makers are approaching a new device cycle just as everything’s shifting to “the cloud.”

So a gadget like Oculus Rift might be just the thing that’s needed to keep game hardware feeling fresh. The Oculus Rift is a virtual-reality headset that immerses the wearer in the videogame world playing around them.

Virtual Reality (VR) gaming has been every gamer’s fantasy since the film The Lawnmower Man came out in 1992. Thankfully, the Oculus Rift VR headset is nothing like that – it’s much better. Connected to a PC, it presents your environment in full 3D, with a 110° field of view that tracks your head movements so you can look around virtual worlds. It’s been trialled by some of the gaming industry’s leading figures, like John Carmack the creator of Doom and Quake, and has received their seal of approval. When the headset launches later this year, its makers say they’re hoping to keep it under the $300 (€230) price mark, which is unprecedented for this kind of technology.

Unlike past attempts at virtual reality (like, most notoriously, Nintendo’s Virtual Boy), the Oculus Rift works because “the hardware’s finally ready”.

Is Virtual Reality Becoming A Reality?

A new Smartphone app has been developed based on the Codentify techonology. The app helps deal with the ever-growing problem of counterfeit cigarettes being smuggled into countries. Fine Gael Dublin Senator, Catherine Noone has recommended that the Gardaí should start using this technology here in Ireland.

The new high-tech app uses track and trace technology to make it easier to recognise counterfeit cigarettes and

allows fines to be given on the spot. Grant Thorton and Retail Ireland have recently issued research results showing that the counterfeit cigarette trade is costing the Exchequer up to €691 million per annum. Introducing this new app could potentially save the Exchequer €3 billion over five years.

Switzerland is due to introduce Codentify in the coming months and several other countries are planning to bring the new app in on a trial basis.

Noone stated, “Now is the time to seriously consider the Codentify scheme, or something like it, as we seek to combat the counterfeit market in Ireland, whether its cigarettes, fuel smuggling or digital piracy.”

No one believes that we need to be addressing old problems with new solutions and believes that introducing Codentify in Ireland would do just that.

Dublin Rock Band Plays A Blinder

Night Blind are a Dublin quartet that formed in early 2011 who have the type of hard edged sound that hasn’t been heard around the city’s pubs and venues for quite some time. Built around a twin guitar attack, the originality of their music is owed to a successful blend of Hard Rock, Blues, Punk and even a bit of Reggae. With the release of their double-sided single “Sudden Feeling/Rhythm n lose” the band hope to show

people what they really should be listening to.The first song “Sudden Feeling” is a 5 minute stomper of hard-rocking guitars, melodious basslines, harmonizing vocals and military style drums that

build to a crescendo half-way through before kicking into a really catchy sing-along “chorus?” that’s hard to get out of your head. The tune incorporates some very uplifting and well crafted soloing that is obviously there to compliment the music rather than to just show off their chops. There aren’t many lyrics in this song but the power of the music will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

The second song “Rhythm n lose” literally kicks off with a stomping drum beat that will have your foot tapping before you realise it. The guitars kick in with a groove that’s like something you’ve imagined you’ve heard in a previous life, before the bass gallops off with your thoughts and the singer screams “I never thought before, but have I changed at all I wonder…”. The song touches on feelings of restlessness which is definitely supported by the restlessness of the music beneath it. The complexity of this song is disguised by how effortlessly it all works together, which is a sign of great song writing.

You can find out more at www.facebook.com/NightBlind.Band. Or listen to some of their tracks here https://soundcloud.com/nightblind-band

You can catch them playing live as part of a charity gig in Aid of Umbrella Foundation in The Pint on 30th May. You can also see them live in Whelan’s on June 25th, and Voodoo Lounge on July 5th.

As the Irish weather gets (slightly) better there’s no excuse not to be out soaking up the sun, or in our case, lack of rain.

No better way to make the most of our good fortune than catching Dublin City Soul Festival’s 7th annual ‘Soul Picnic’. The festival, which is in association with Dublin City Council and Fáilte Ireland, is “a celebration of peace, unity and love” and promises to be a great day out with friends or family.

Located in the surroundings of Merrion Square on Saturday May 25th and Sunday 26th, the ‘Soul Picnic’ will host a number of musical acts from 12pm to 6pm each day. Admission to the event is free but a suggested donation of €5 or whatever you can afford is asked.

The sole purpose behind the festival is to raise funds for the Musical Youth Foundation children’s charity – the brainchild of Chris Maher, who has a desire to have a long term positive impact on the local and wider community by providing children in Ireland with access to a musical education. In 2012 the Musical Youth Foundation helped over 100 children learn to play the guitar. With your help 2013 can be even more successful.

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

We’re up all night ‘til the sun / we’re up all night to get some / we’re up all night for good fun

/we’re up all night to get lucky.” The only

reason you might not have heard these lyrics being constantly blared out over the airwaves the last few weeks is if you live under a rock, or don’t own a radio.

If you’re unfamiliar, here’s a quick update: The lyrics come from the lead single ‘Get Lucky’ from Daft Punk’s eagerly awaited new album ‘Ran-dom Access Memories’. Released on 17 May, this is the fourth album from the French electronic music duo.

For two men who dress up as robots, they know how to cause quite a stir in the music world. And with collabo-rations with the likes of Nile Rodgers from Chic and musician/songwriter Paul Williams, it’s easy to understand why. Their latest offering fuses elements of house, funk, disco and electro, pay-ing homage to the music of the past.

If ‘Get Lucky’ is anything to go by – it’s Daft Punk’s first UK number

one, and Spotify, the music streaming website, reported that it is the most streamed new song on record – ‘Random Access Memories’ looks like it is going to be the big hit of the summer.

Queens Of The Stone Age - Like Clockwork

Another eagerly anticipated album to grace our ear-holes this

summer is Queens of the Stone Age’s ‘…Like Clockwork’. Set for release on 4 June, this will be the sixth studio album to come from the American rock band.

Two singles from the album – ‘My God Is The Sun’ and ‘I Appear Missing’ – have already been doing the rounds online, wetting the appetites of fans worldwide. And sure why wouldn’t they be? This is the

first new material to be released since the band’s hiatus back in 2009.

During the break members went off and did their own thing. Frontman and guitarist, Josh Homme, joined the super group Them Crooked Vultures alongside Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones to record and tour for a period of time. Returning to his original place as QOTSA’s frontman, Homme recruited Grohl’s services for behind the drum kit once again after the band parted ways

with their former drummer. As well as having the Foo’s

frontman contribute to the album, a host of other musicians were brought in. The list, being nothing short of impressive, includes Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), and even Sir Elton John. With guest appearances like that it’s no wonder people think that 4 June couldn’t come quick enough.
