OVER the past few months there has been an alarming rise in the number of racist incidents reported, both in Dublin and nationally.

Gardai in Dublin are investigating a shocking racist attack on a shop in the Cookstown industrial estate in Tallaght on Saturday November 2nd 2013.

The store in question, a local, family run Halal food store, part of the Al-Minnah Foods outlet, was entirely ransacked, looted and equipment and stock was badly damaged. Initial estimates for the damage caused are around €40,000.

The owners of the store have lived in Ireland for more than 18 years.

During the attack, shocking racist graffiti including “Pakis Out” and “Niggrs Out” were daubed on the walls of the shop.

Director of the Al-Minnah outlet, Mohammed Djellal said:” They destroyed everything, food, fridges and fittings. They also stole the hard drive to the CCTV system.”

The shop has been open in the community for several years.So far, nobody has been arrested in connection with this attack.

Also in Tallaght, Gardai are investigating a racially motivated attack on a Filipino man. The man in question was savagely attacked and left hospitalised, where he remains in a critical condition.

A white-line picket was arranged by the Anti-Austerity Alliance, Dublin South West, outside the Tallaght hospital on November 17, 2013 to highlight the man’s plight and as a gesture of solidarity with the shop owner and the local Roma community.

WALTONS THIRD ANNUALMUSIC COMPETITION ENCOURAGES LEARNING

THE Waltons Music for Schools Competition is a national competition and celebration of music in Irish schools. The 2013-2014 competition will award a total of €10,000 worth of vouchers for musical equipment from Waltons Music. Awards will be divided among six winning primary and post-primary schools, including two first prizes of €3,000 vouchers, and music groups from twelve finalist schools will have the fantastic opportunity to perform in the National Concert Hall!

The value of music and music education is undisputed. Numerous international studies have shown that music instruction and active music making supplies intellectual, emotional and physical components critical to young people’s development. Yet despite the acknowledged results of these studies and the recent Department of Education and Skills music curriculum guidelines for primary schools, Ireland still has a school system where many young people have little exposure to music making of any kind. The Waltons Music for Schools Competition thus offers a unique opportunity for primary and post-primary schools to kick-start or develop their own music programmes.

Last year’s second annual Waltons Music for Schools Competition was a resounding success,

with wonderful entries submitted by primary and post-primary schools from all over Ireland. Twelve schools were chosen to participate in the Finalists Concert on 8 April 2013 at the National Concert Hall, compered by Liz Nolan of RTÉ lyric fm and adjudicated by Ellen Cranitch of RTÉ lyric fm and the world-renowned musician, producer and arranger Dónal Lunny.

All primary and post-primary schools, as well as special schools, recognised by the Department of Education and Skills in the Republic of Ireland, are eligible to enter this competition. It is not necessary for schools to have existing music programmes in place to enter.

All schools interested in participating in this year’s Competition should submit the following materials:

• A completed entry form.• Either a DVD or an MPG, AVI or MOV video

recording of a single ensemble piece or song (no more than five minutes long) performed by an instrumental, vocal or mixed group, all of whom must be current students at the school. The piece or song can be in any musical style (classical, traditional, rock/pop, musical theatre,

jazz, world, etc.) and can be existing or original, but it should in some way address the theme of ‘Why Music?’ – that is, the importance of music in our lives. Possible groups include: choir (with or without instrumental accompaniment), instrumental ensemble, band, traditional group, school musical, etc. (Please note that audio recordings, while they may supplement your school’s entry, are not acceptable for your entered piece or song.)

• A JPG photograph of the performing group.

Entries will be judged in two areas: Ambition, imagination and clear goals/intentions for starting and/or developing a music programme in the school. And Musicality, presentation and originality of their performance. Special attention will also be paid to the inclusiveness of the performance – how many students and/or different ages are involved – and how well it addresses the ‘Why Music?’ theme.

AN ALARMING RISE IN THE NUMBER OF RACIST INCIDENTS REPORTEDStory continued from page one

The attacks were condemned by the Socialist party, who said that they need to be met with a strong community response. They urged Community activists, organisations and trade unionists to actively organise in their communities to oppose racists and racist behaviour.

A statement issued by the party claimed that ‘the shameful actions of the Gardaí and HSE in relation to the completely wrongful taking into care of children from the Roma community has created the environment for racism against that

community to grow. ‘It has also emerged that the Roma family from

Tallaght at the centre of the recent controversy have previously been victims of racist attacks. It has recently come to light that the families’ home has been attacked several times and that a number of threats have been made against the family. The family has had to install fortified glass in the windows after they were broken on a number of occasions.

In Limerick, there was outrage at the appearance of a number of anti-semitic posters

which were plastered along the walls of a local bridge in the city.

The hate posters which were roundly condemned by all sides of the political spectrum in Limerick, included posters targeting justice minister, Alan Shatter, with the anti-semitic message “Shatter has learned from his homeland how to crucify the little people.”

Limerick Councillor Jerome Scanlan stated: “It is frightening to think people would even think of putting these up. It is absolutely shocking that anybody would do so.”

THE Government has announced an additional €1.6 million in aid to victims of Typhoon Haiyan, bringing the total funds committed by Ireland to more than €3million. The funding will be channelled through trusted NGO partners and will support the provision of shelter, food, water and health services to the 13 million people affected by Typhoon Haiyan. This funding is in addition to:

• €1million funding announced on 11 November by Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore T.D.

• €500,000 worth of emergency supplies airlifted on 13 November to the Philippines that are currently being distributed to victims of the typhoon

Two members of Ireland’s Rapid Response Corps have also deployed to the Philippines to assist UN relief teams there. Further deployments and additional airlifts are anticipated.

Announcing the additional funding, Minister for Trade and Development Joe Costello T.D., said:

‘Ireland acted quickly to respond to Typhoon Haiyan, but

as the magnitude of this disaster has become clear, it is all too apparent that further assistance is required. The situation is critical. Immediate threats to life include lack of safe drinking water, lack of shelter, trauma injuries, lack of sufficient food, lack of access to sanitation and personal hygiene. Our aid is being targeted directly to address these urgent needs.’

Minister Costello also stressed the importance of improved coordination amongst donors to ensure that the aid which has already been delivered reaches the most needy as quickly as

possible: ‘The international community

has learned many lessons from previous crises, such as the 2004 Tsunami and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Ireland has supported subsequent efforts by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to establish clear systems to allow the most effective, efficient and rapid delivery of aid possible. Ireland will continue to make every effort to ensure our response is timely and effective, and meets the most critical, immediate needs.’

FOR every 10km a disadvantaged student has to travel, the less likely they are to go to university. The statistic comes from a study done by researchers at NUI Galway, University of Limerick and the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). The results show that if a school leaver lives more than 50kms away from their college, then their participation in third-level education is lowered by 13.5%. The study also showed that those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, who lived the furthest away, have the lowest participation record in universities.

Changes to the Higher Education Grant

were listed as a reason for the difficulty in travelling to far away colleges. The grant is worth just over €3,000 an academic year and nearly 100,000 avail of the money. However, since the recession began, the grant has been hit by cuts by the Department of Education, causing huge financial strain for already struggling families. The study was completed when students were required to live 24km from college in order to qualify for the full student grant but now the distance has increased to 45km.

“The effect of distance on participation for those from lower social classes is likely to have been exacerbated by this change” the

report states.The continuous price hikes by Dublin

Bus and Irish Rail will also have an effect on those commuting to college. In early 2014 there will be a 10% increase in fare prices for passengers. This will be the third price hike in three years by the transport service in Ireland and will further add to the difficulty of travelling to and from college.

The study also took note of the good geographic location of colleges and universities across Ireland and revealed that most of the campuses were easily accessed.

Initiative between Germany and Ireland to reinforce Ireland’s economic recovery is welcome news in relation to access for low-cost credit for Irish SMEs. Minister for Small Business, John Perry T.D. has welcomed the Government’s decision to exit the bailout as planned on December 15th, without a pre-arranged precautionary credit facility, saying this is the right time and best option for Ireland’s continued recovery and economic growth.

“This Government have been working to this objective for the past three years and we will now return to being a normal Eurozone member state, with normal market funding arrangements.

“It is very good news to hear about the discussions with Chancellor Merkel, to put in place an initiative that will bilaterally assist

us to reinforce Ireland’s economic recovery, by improving funding mechanisms for the real economy, including providing low-cost credit for Irish SMEs. This is positive news for SMEs and I welcome the potential this initiative to access low cost credit, will have for many small businesses throughout the country.

“This decision is another step in the right direction along the path of economic sustainability and good financial governance. Since March 2011, when Fine Gael and Labour agreed to enter a coalition government to restore our economic sovereignty and get Ireland back to work, we have seen Anglo-Irish Bank, Irish Nationwide Building Society and the Anglo promissory notes done away with. We have seen the interest rate on our bailout loans lowered and an extension given

on the length of time we have to repay those loans, which will save the State billions. We have also secured agreement at EU level to look at retrospectively recapitalising our banks using the European Stability Mechanism. This agreement needs to, and will be, pursued.

“Growing local businesses here is essential to supporting the domestic economy and getting people back to work. This is an important milestone on Ireland’s recovery and it will send a positive signal to businesses and investors alike. It is testament to the commitment of the Irish people to get the job done and will send an important signal that Ireland is recovering, returning to normal market funding and building for a sustainable future.”

SINN Féin's Ballyfermot representative, Daithí Doolan said recently, "Parents must be central to any decisions made on the future of schools in Ballyfermot."

Responding to reports that four schools in Ballyfermot will be amalgamated in to two, Doolan said;

"The news came as a major shock to parents that four schools in Ballyfermot, De Le Salle's, St Raphaels, St Michaels and St Gabriels, will be merged into two schools. The news arrived in a note home to parents yesterday. The new arrangement is set to be

in place by next September."According to the Catholic Arch Dioceses

of Dublin the reason for the move is to facilitate their divestment from education.

"Parents and staff have expressed genuine concerns to me. These concerns can only be addressed by the Catholic Church and Department of Education engaging honestly and openly with parents and teachers.

"Parents are seriously worried about the ability to accommodate all pupils in two schools on the grounds of the Dominican Order, Ballyfermot. They are concerned

about over crowding, loss of teachers and growing class sizes.

"Divestment should not be a smoke screen for returning to over crowded, understaffed class rooms or job losses. School land and buildings owned by the Catholic Church in Ballyfermot should not be sold off but should be given to the Department of Education. This will ensure any new schools in Ballyfermot are of the highest possible standard and have the capacity to accommodate all pupils."

CONCERN RAISED AT PROPOSAL TO MERGE BALLYFERMOT SCHOOLS

IT’S the sort of headline that can stop you in your tracks; “Woman found dead under pile of junk mail in her front hall”. Apparently she had been dead for weeks. No one knew she was there and nobody missed her. Or, “Man found dead under a pile of cardboard” he had died from malnutrition and hypothermia. No one knew who he was.

It’s like the song says “All the lonely people, where do they all come from”?

We know them to see in our areas, like old Jill with her eccentric ways, her garish dress sense and how she kept to herself. Or old Tim with his fondness for the drink and how people avoided him at all costs because he could get rowdy after downing his few cans.

They say Jill was once very well to do, but fell on hard times after losing her husband and two sons in a car crash. She had a very bad nervous breakdown and was never the same again. She became a recluse and turned her back on all her relations and friends. They say old Tim always had a fondness for the drink. He once had a wife and family, but they threw him out after one alcohol fused outburst too many and he became homeless. He’d been on the streets for twenty years.

There are lots more like them, but for the most part we leave them to their own

devises. They like it like that, we believe, or do they? We watch as they grow old and feeble. We see them shuffling to the shop for their small provisions. We see them sitting alone on park benches talking to them selves. And all the time we go about our daily round and mind our own business. And then the winter comes and we might see them a little less, until soon we realize we haven’t seen them in weeks. But what if one of these poor unfortunates of society was a relation of ours? How would we feel then? It’s hard not to wonder about any old relatives or friends we might have out there who could end up this way. It could happen to any one of us and no one knows what the future holds.

Should we give a little knock on Jill’s door to see if she’s okay? Perhaps old Tim has moved to another part of town with a better, more sheltered doorway maybe. It’s hard to know what to do when you know these people want to be left alone. Also you have enough on your own plate to contend with this day and age. But think about it. Why not make a little enquiry if you’ve missed someone off the street lately. Knock on the old folk’s door or at least inform the authorities connected to the aged and

infirm. Have a chat with a police man about the old Tim in your area. Chances are they probably are keeping tabs on him. But when occasionally the worst does happen and they are found alone and deceased, at least you will know that you did all you could under the circumstances. It is of course a sad sorry state of affairs that someone should lay dead on their floor or on the cold ground for days, even weeks undiscovered. Perhaps not even a soul to claim them. What has society come to? Bad enough to be isolated perhaps in the heart of the country but I have also heard of this happening in built up areas too. Yes these poor people do reap what they sow because they won’t ask for help and they choose to cut themselves off with their own free will.

But should there not be a system brought about where at least every 48 hours or so someone calls round or some idea to that effect? A sort of district watchperson or the like for alas The Simon Community and their contemporaries can’t be everywhere. Remember just because they don’t ask for help doesn’t mean they don’t badly need it. Look out for one another.

THE number of people infected with gonorrhoea has increased, according to the HSE.

In an article by the Irish Independent, it was reported that the HSE released new figures in relation to the sexually transmitted infection (STI). The findings showed that the STI is on the rise in the country, growing by 33% in the last three years. In 2013, there have already been 1,077 cases.

The study, which was done by the HSE South East, also revealed that both younger heterosexual and homosexual males were the highest at risk of catching the STI. Gonorrhoea is transmitted through unprotected sex and can lie in an individual’s body without presenting any symptoms. Untreated gonorrhoea can lead to serious long-term future health complications.

Director of Public Health in HSE East Dr. Margaret Fitzgerald warned people to take precautions during sexual activity and to get regular STI tests.

“This upsurge in gonorrhoea is a cause of

concern, as untreated or inadequately treated gonorrhoea may lead to severe complications including infertility in men and women,” she said.

“Also, emerging antimicrobial resistance is a major concern with gonorrhoea and it is possible that multidrug resistant gonorrhoea may become untreatable in the near future. ’

“We’re also concerned that infection with gonorrhoea may facilitate the transmission/acquisition of HIV, and because many cases are asymptomatic – approximately 50% of women and 10% of men with urogenital gonorrhoea have no symptoms – many people may not be aware of their infection or risk’”

“Our ability to test for gonorrhoea has improved in recent years, and more sensitive tests, and more numbers attending for screening may account for some of the increase – however, we know that unsafe sexual behaviour is a significant driver of the increase in cases of gonorrhoea and other STIs.”

SINGER, Mary Byrne celebrated with the men and women of Phoenix Clubhouse EVE at a social Inclusion week event on Wednesday, November 13. The Phoenix Team continue to break down barriers in overcoming the stigma of mental health, this time through their hospitality at a fantastic event highlighting the strengths, talents and importance of the Phoenix Clubhouse and it’s members to the Clondalkin and wider South Dublin community.

Guest speakers articulated a positive message for adults with experience of a mental health difficulty, full of possibilities and hope for the future. Mary Byrne took time during her visit to learn about the clubhouse model of recovery. Mary spoke candidly to members about her own experience of depression and passionately about the need for Phoenix Clubhouse to the local community.

Mary Byrne commented “I was really touched by the affection and warmth of all the members at The Phoenix Clubhouse. A service like the one they provide is so badly needed in our community and I pray and hope that all the staff and members at The Phoenix Clubhouse can continue to do their great work for many years to come.”

Social Inclusion week creates an opportunity to celebrate the diverse communities we live in. Phoenix Clubhouse’s place in the community is enriched by the experiences presented by the social inclusion unit in the South Dublin County Council and by the community organizations that were in attendance, who also support Phoenix throughout the year including the FAI, VEC, Employability, SDCC Housing Social Work team, Jigsaw, Beacon of Light Counseling service & the community Gardaí.

Director Adam McKay said the script was a work in progress, and the story might include a custody battle and bowling. He was quoted as saying that nothing was set. The story is moved from San Diego to New York, at the onset of the cable news era in the 1980s. Kristen Wiig plays Brick’s love interest.

We are very excited about Anchorman 2 as we are huge fans of the original 2004 film Anchorman:

And it seems they are pulling out all the stops, well at least marketing wise with Chrysler Group LLC cross-promoting the film with a series of commercials featuring Ron Burgundy and the Dodge Durango. Then it was announced that Ben & Jerry’s would be releasing a limited edition ice cream flavour in promotion of the film called Ron Burgundy’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch.

We even got a video of Ron Burgundy talking about our very own Love/Hate series. And to top it all off, it was announced that the premier will be held in the Savoy cinema in Dublin on the 9th of

December. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is in cinemas nationwide from the 20th of December.

Oldboy is a 2013 American remake of the 2003 Park Chan-wook’s South Korean cult film, which is based on the Japanese manga with the same name. The film is directed by Spike Lee and written by Mark Protosevich. It stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley.

We here at Bizblitz are HUGE fans of the original Oldboy movie and we were distraught when we heard that they were going to make an American remake. We have seen many remakes in the past, with mixed results. ‘Girl With A Dragon Tattoo’ remake was great but then we had ‘Let the right one in’ remake ‘Let me in’ which was dire, lets not even mention this years Stephen King written ‘Carrie’ remake. We like Spike Lee so we will be first in the queue to see this.......with reservations.

Irving’s wife, Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence), could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down.

This is directed by David Owen Russell whose last 2 movies were ‘The Fighter’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook, so we know this is going to be great!

Keep the little birds well fed during the cold weather with this wholesome DIY treat for them which kids can enjoy making.. then have endless fun watching all the different varieties come to eat your creation! The butter or peanut butter provides lots of good fats to keep the birds warm this winter and the bird food gives them tons of energy.

To make the upside down bird feeder, cut the grapefruit or orange in half and take out the fruity flesh. Make a hole in the bottom and thread through some ribbon knotting it inside the peel to hold it in place. Tie a loop at the other end to hang from a tree. Spread on peanut butter and leave to chill in a fridge for 30mins. Decorate with your bird treats. The birds can rest on the upside down peel and enjoy the tasty treats you’ve stuck on!

To make the basket shaped bird feeder, cut the grapefruit or orange in half and take out the fruity flesh. Make two holes opposite each other half way up the peel and thread the ribbon through each hole. Knot the ends of the ribbon so the peel now acts like a basket. In a bowl mix 1/3 cup peanut butter or butter with about 1 cup bird food mix and with your hands pack it down into the peel. The birds can rest on the rim while they dig into the tasty treats in the basket!

MAN, Woman and Child is a research and performance project devised and co-ordinated by Michael Fortune featuring traditional singers, Luke Cheevers, Niamh Parsons, John and Brigid Tunney, Mick Fowler, Rosie Stewart, Tim Lyons, Aileen Lambert and Jerry O’Reilly. This project is based on The Child Ballad Collection: a collection of traditional songs gathered by the American collector Francis J Child in England and Scotland between 1882 and 1898. Many of the songs, or variants of them, are sung in the Irish tradition. This is the first project of this kind to be undertaken in Ireland.

Approximately fifty songs will be performed over four nights

along with a comprehensive talk on Child Ballads in Ireland by singer Jerry O’Reilly.

THIS is the new Nissan Qashqai, which will be built in Sunderland, UK, and goes on sale in January 2014. It’s priced slightly higher than the outgoing Qashqai: the range will cover a £17-28k price range.

To justify the price increase, the new Qashqai wears a sharper, more stylish body, and boasts more generous on-board kit levels across the line-up. With two million Qashqais sold worldwide since 2006, it is, in Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn’s own words, ‘The most important Nissan of the decade’. No offence, GT-R.

The new Nissan Qashqai looks like a Nissan X-Trail!

Yes, and that’s no bad thing. The trademark Nissan grille with extra-large badging and lights defined by sharp LED details give the car’s nose a touch more aggressive look, emphasised by bolstered wheelarches for that critical bold SUV stance. It’s sleeker body is 49mm longer than before, plus it’s slightly wider and lower too. This isn’t a mere vanity makeover though; the new Qashqai boasts a class-best figure of 0.32Cd, thanks to active grille shutters and more sculpted rear quarters designed to smooth airflow. At the same time, more high-tensile steel has been used

for the body which, combined with aluminium suspension parts, helps make the new Qashqai up to 40kg lighter than its predecessor. Result!What’s new inside the 2014 Qashqai?

As we reported in our spy shots scoop, Nissan’s mainly worked on improving perceived quality, and has done so with a larger touchscreen and more dashes of chrome rather than trying to reinvent the (steering) wheel. The cabin’s more spacious both in the front and rear, though, and extra sound deadening will bring the Qashqai’s on-road refinement up to scratch, Nissan claims.

Having had our mits all over the new model already, CAR can report the interior is a big improvement versus the dowdy old cabin. Clever design touches include notches in the cubbyholes to run charging cables though, and greater centre console storage space thanks to a standard-fit electronic parking brake.

New on-board toys include moving object detection, which displays hazards near the car by highlighting them on the 360-degree round-view display. There’s also collision prevention braking, which uses a radar in the nose to spot stationary traffic ahead and pull up the Qashqai, avoiding a collision. There’s tech to improve the driving experience, too, including a new dynamic chassis

control set-up that brakes the Nissan’s wheels independently, even before skidding is detected. Nissan engineers claim this makes the new Qashqai not just safer, but more fun to drive.

What’s under the bonnet?

It’s an all turbo, all four-cylinder line-up, with a choice of six-speed manual gearbox or CVT. The only petrol model at launch is a new 1.2-litre unit with 112bhp. A new 1.5-litre diesel is joined by a revised 1.6-litre with all-wheel drive: the former sneaks under the 99g/km CO2 barrier in manual guise. A 1.6-litre petrol engine will arrive in summer 2014.

Anything else?

There’s a new take on drowsiness sensors, in the form of the new Qashqai’s ‘driver assistance alert’. Instead of simply chiming a warning when the sensors detect tiredness, the car begins monitoring the driver from the moment the engine is started, displaying an eight-segment bar in the new 5in instrument display. As your concentration wanes, the bars start to fill, before the main alarm sounds at ‘maximum tiredness’.

U2’S manager Paul McGuinness is to sell his company and step down as manager of the world-famous band. McGuinness, who has managed the band since the beginning of their career more than 30 years ago, is negotiating to sell his company Principle Management to Live Nation., New York Times reports.

In a statement McGuinness said he knew the time had come for him to step down. “It could be seen as slightly poor etiquette for a manager to consider retiring

before his artist has split, quit or died, but U2 have never subscribed to the rock ‘n’ roll code of conduct,” he said. “As I approach the musically relevant age of 64 I have resolved to take a less hands-on role as the band embark on the next cycle of their extraordinary career.

“I have long regarded Guy Oseary (madonnas manager) as the best manager of his generation, and there is no one else I would have considered to take over the day-to-day running

of our business.” In 2002 McGuinness was

presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Meteor Music Awards at Point Theatre Dublin and U2 won the best Irish Band Award.

Noted for his business acumen, he has been responsible for U2 3D concert films, U2-branded iPods, sponsorship from BlackBerry and the first ever concert streamed live on YouTube.

James Vincent McMorrow - Post TropicalJames Vincent McMorrow has announced plans for his second album, ‘Post Tropical’, On a pecan farm half a mile from the Mexican border, ‘Post Tropical’ was born – a collection of sounds and ideas brought to life in rooms where the low frequencies of passing freight trains vibrated in the studio, briefly disturbing the birds in the rafters. And like most new ideas, ‘Post Tropical’ is hard to describe. It requires attention and engagement. It seduces you towards hidden depths. His acclaimed debut album, ‘Early in the Morning’, reached number 1, went platinum and picked up a Choice Music Prize nomination upon its release in 2010.

Post Tropical is released on January 14th.

Backed by a skeletal rhythm section and discreet flourishes of fiddle and steel guitar, the pair emulate the Everlys’ tight vocal formation while making more explicit the emotional and sexual tensions in “Oh So Many Years” and the traditional ballad “Barbara Allen.”

The Lp is scheduled to be released on November 25th.
