NEW LICENCE SYSTEMTO CAUSE DISRUPTIONAS of Tuesday 29th October, drivers will face stricter procedures when applying or re-applying for their driving licence.

Motor tax offices will cease to produce and process licenses and there will be a small network of offices in the country to deal with applications. There will be 34 new offices that will deal primarily will issuing licences, rather leaving the responsibility to the tax office. Certain regions will see their office numbers cut such as Donegal who, currently have six offices for renewals, will be left with two. This will mean

that the public will now have to travel further if they require licence renewals.

Under the new rules, individuals will have to go in person to get their licence application or renewal processed, whereas in the past, they could get someone to hand in an application on their behalf. People will also have to have their photo taken at the office.

The National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) said the new regulations were created to “increase the level of security around the driving licence, combat fraud and keep unlicensed drivers off our roads by ensuring that the only person who will use your licence is you”. The new scheme is being handled by the Department of Transport in a move to change to plastic licences.

The Irish Postmasters' Union (IPU)

said thousands of drivers will be inconvenienced by the change, especially the elderly.

IPU president Ciaran McEntee said there would be a huge amount of driving

in larger counties such as Cork and Mayo, adding: "Elderly drivers have to renew their licences more frequently, thus increasing travel time and inconvenience."

“New licence system to cause disruption”

RSA and Electric Ireland distributed 85,000 hi-vis vests to junior infants due to the darker evenings after the clocks went back. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is reminding road-users to ensure they can be clearly seen when out walking or cycling on the roads. For the fourth year, 85,000 children will learn the important message of high visibility through the Road Safety Authority and Electric Ireland partnership to provide every child starting school with a high visibility vest.

154 people have been killed on Irish roads to date this year, 14 more road deaths when compared to the same period last year. Of these, 21 were pedestrians and five were cyclists. The Road Safety Authority is advising road-users to be safe and be seen when using the roads by wearing high visibility material, carrying a torch and ensuring their bicycle lights are working.

Mr Michael Rowland, Director of Road Safety Research and Driver Education, Road Safety

Authority said: “With evenings getting darker much earlier,

and fewer hours of daylight during the day, it’s even more important for vulnerable road-users such as walkers, joggers and cyclists to ensure they can be seen by other road-users when out on the roads. The most effective way to do this is to wear high visibility clothing such as a high viz vest or a Sam Browne belt, carrying a torch when out on the roads and by ensuring you have working lights on your bicycle. Through our partnership with Electric Ireland, every junior infant in Ireland will receive a high visibility vest which will help to ensure our most vulnerable road-users can be safe and be seen when out on the roads. I would also urge other road-users to be extra careful when sharing the roads with children who may be walking or cycling to school, particularly during the winter months.” Mr Jim Dollard, Executive Director, BSC and ESB Electric Ireland said:

“Once again, we are delighted to partner with the Road Safety Authority for this initiative which helps to teach our youngest and most vulnerable road-users about being safe and visible on our roads. Wearing a high vis vest is a simple way to make sure your child can be seen when out walking or cycling, particularly as the evenings get darker.”

The RSA is also reminding parents of the importance of road safety when kids are out playing, to wear high visibility material and to encourage their children to carry a torch at all times. Accompanying adults are also advised to wear a high viz vest.

THIS month (November) sees the coming together of over 100 community organisations in solidarity with the one in five women who are affected by domestic violence.

The initiative is part of ‘The 16 Days Campaign’ which is an international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991. Since then, over 5,167 groups in 187 countries have taken part.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is an international campaign that starts on 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on 10 December, Human Rights Day. The campaign hopes to raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international level.

This year’s theme is “Let’s challenge militarism and end violence against women”.

Since its inception in 1991, The 16 Days Campaign has been used as an organizing strategy

by individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women by:

Raising awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international levels.

Strengthening local work around violence against women establishing a clear link between local and international work to end violence against women.

Providing a forum in which organizers can develop and share new and effective strategies.

Demonstrating the solidarity of women around the world organizing against violence against women.

Creating tools to pressure governments to

implement promises made to eliminate violence against women.

Here, in Ireland, since 1996, Women's Aid has used the 16 Days Campaign to raise awareness of the reality of domestic violence and to push for positive change to increase women's safety. The Campaign grows every year with more people getting involved and speaking out about violence against women.

In Ireland last year, over 130 groups took part in the National Balloon Action or organised other events like art competitions, exhibitions, memorials, film showings, postcard and poster campaigns, and information stands and media campaigns.

The frightening reality is that one in three women worldwide face abuse, violence and rape every day. In Ireland, one in five women experience domestic violence during their lifetime, and it is estimated that 213,000 women

in Ireland are living with severe abuse.Woman’s Aid state that this can affect any

woman and it can happen in any home and that every day in Ireland women are beaten, raped and trapped in their own homes by those closest to them - their husbands, boyfriends and partners.Woman’s Aid provide numerous services including a 24 hour helpline:1800 341 900 (10am to 10pm, 7 days a week except Christmas Day), they also offer a one to one support service, they provide a court accompaniment service in the Greater Dublin Area, and they refer women to local domestic violence support services and refuges.

The 16 Days of Action run from 25th November, UN International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10th December, Human Rights Day. The campaign spans these 16 Days in order to highlight the link between violence against women and human rights.

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter TD, is delighted to announce the launch of Ireland’s first national Missing Persons Day, which will take place on Wednesday 4th December, 2013 at Farmleigh House, Dublin.

The theme of this inaugural event is ‘Forget Me Not’ which

has its origins in a project by Transition Students of Davis College, Mallow, Co. Cork who were awarded Young Social Innovators of the Year 2012.

Speaking today, Minister Shatter said, ‘Ireland's first national Missing Persons Day presents an opportunity for us to remember those who have gone

missing and acknowledge the difficulties experienced by their families and friends.

‘It is also important to recognise the invaluable contribution and commitment of An Garda Síochána, the state agencies and voluntary groups working diligently in our communities to highlight the

issues and impacts surrounding people who go missing.

‘I look forward to joining with the Garda Commissioner and the families of missing persons in this important ceremony of remembrance and support. ’

IRELAND ANNOUNCES NATIONAL MISSING PERSONS DAY 2013

THE government are planning to tackle the problem of alcohol abuse in Ireland, according to Minister for Primary Care, Alex White TD.

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting recently, the minister announced an ‘extensive package’ will be deployed to help tackle alcohol abuse in the country. According to Alcohol Action Ireland, 88 deaths every year are attributed to alcohol abuse, one in three road deaths are alcohol-related and one in four deaths among young men aged 15-39 in Ireland is due to alcohol. The new package will be incorporated in a Public Health Bill. The bill will also include minimum alcohol pricing units and regulation on advertising and sponsorship.

Minister White said, “This is a landmark day. It is the first time alcohol misuse has been addressed as a public health issue. The Government has recognised the severe consequences of the misuse of alcohol – including deaths, injuries and social and

financial problems – and has determined to take action to address this problem.

“To implement this range of measures, the Government approved the drafting of the first ever piece of public health legislation to address the problem – the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill. The package of measures is based on the 2012 Substance Misuse Report. The Report correctly identified that the misuse of alcohol could only be addressed through a range of complementary measures, rather than through any one single initiative”, said the Minister.

Some of the measures to be enforced in the bill include:•Enforcement powers will be given to Environmental Health Officers•Structural Separation of alcohol from other products in mixed trading outlets•Regulation of sports sponsorship

The government will attempt to curb alcohol consumption by managing adverts

on TV and radio that encourage drinking among young people. Regulation of alcohol in sport sponsorship will also be monitored and reviewed.

Minister for Health, James Reilly has welcomed the new measures, commenting, “alcohol misuse in Ireland is a serious problem with 2,000 of our hospital beds occupied each night by people with alcohol related illness or injury; this impacts on families and individuals at every level of society. It’s deeply worrying that young people are starting to drink earlier and drink more. The average Irish person over the age of 15 is consuming the equivalent of a bottle of vodka a week. The Government is committed to tackling these problems and this week’s decision marks a significant further step in the direction of creating an environment where responsible consumption of alcohol is the norm.”

SINCE the demise of the Celtic Tiger more and more people are shopping in charity or up cycling shops which are springing up everywhere it seems. Out of necessity we have all become more frugal and prudent with our spending and gone are the days when we allowed the old stigma or snobbery attitude to thwart our enjoyment of finding a good bargain for practically next to nothing. Charity shops do wonderful work in caring for those less well off in this country and the need for contribution grows larger every day. From the Saint Vincent de Paul to the local community hall jumble sale in aid of Conquer Cancer it’s all for the good. Shopping in charity shops can be such fun and can be quite addictive! Each time we enter one there is a sense of anticipation about us, almost as though we are digging for gold! You never know what you may find and now and then that special item you have been searching for just might turn

up, and for virtually a song it’s yours! Plus you have the added satisfaction in the knowledge that you are contributing to a good cause, and let’s face it there is enough waste in the world.

Okay you might have to rummage through endless bits of costume jewelry in order to find your piece of solid silver or, slide meticulously through endless rails of high street clobber in order to find your perfect vintage/designer garment, but sometimes the search is all worth while. Personally I have found a few treasures and they mean as much to me as if I had paid a fortune! It’s a great way to keep your inner material girl happy and obviously we don’t have to be rich to look well. Style has nothing to do with money in fact it’s classed as an achievement to look good on a shoe string, and what’s more with fashion being so fleeting you won’t feel so bad if the garment becomes dated over night because you haven’t spent a kings ransom for it in the

first place. Most charity shops are very particular about quality and cleanliness these days, so no need to worry about that. Granted there is the possibility that you might have to have some garments dry cleaned but that’s okay when taking the over all savings you make into consideration. Right now is a good time to source debs dress’s incidentally!

It is possible to come across anything from a fine bone china tea cup to a suite of pure leather furniture. You have got to search thoroughly for hidden gems and book lovers are extremely well catered for too. Most places quite understandably being what they are will not allow bartering or haggling but if you become a regular customer the chances are you will be treated to a reduction now and then or be offered the odd two for the price of one! Also quite a few charity shops have customer loyalty cards now in which you can save points over a period of time and

before too long you have earned yourself a voucher or two! I have one particular friend who has managed to furnish her home completely with her finds in charity/up cycling shops and in extremely attractive vintage styles from the 1940s and 50s no less. It’s a beautiful home, and worthy of a magazine photo shoot! When I asked her how much it had all cost she proudly announced that kitting the whole house out from head to toe had cost no more than one thousand euro’s and that included light fittings and some very good solid wood furniture. No mean feat when you consider the current costs of such items, which usually do not stand up well at all to every day wear and tear these days. Next time you head out on a shopping expedition remember to give charity/up cycling shops a visit. You never know what you might find there!

Finding Hidden Treasures In Your Local Charity Shop

Local Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, Olivia Mitchell has welcomed the opening of the Online Sports Capital Register (www.sportscapitalprogramme.ie) that will be used by sporting organisations to register their interest in the Sports Capital Programme, apply for funding and manage the draw down of the new round of Sports Capital Funding for 2014, announced in last week’s Budget.

“Dublin sports clubs and associations including those in Dublin South have missed out in the past. They don’t seem to be as aware as their rural counterparts of the potential to draw down money from the Sports Capital Programme, and consequently often miss out on accessing

funding that benefits members and provides opportunities for more people to get involved in sport, whatever their ability.

“In 2012, nearly €500,000 in funding was allocated to clubs in Dublin South from this programme but this went to only two organisations. I would urge all local sports clubs and associations to log on to this portal to gain information on the Sports Capital Programme and to register their interest.

“This new portal will facilitate sporting clubs and associations to apply for essential works like new changing rooms, pitches, lighting and other projects when the new Sports Capital Programme is announced later this year”.

Simply cut a triangle shape out of the bubble wrap big enough to fit the tip of your head down to your thighs. Cut the top tip off the triangle and then cut a semi circle shape into the bubble wrap to make a strap to go over your head. Then cut up each side of the triangle to make the straps to go around your waist.

After winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) returns home to District 12

along with fellow winner Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Shortly after returning home, they must embark on a “Victory Tour” of the districts, leaving behind their close friends and family again. On the day of the Victory Tour, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) threatens Katniss’ best friend and pretend cousin, Gale Hawthorne, outraged after she and Peeta broke the rules of the 74th Hunger Games that allowed them both to win. During the tour, Katniss senses that a rebellion is brewing in the districts, but the Capitol is still

firmly in control as Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games, known as a Quarter Quell, an event taken place every 25 years – a competition that could change Panem forever.

In this Hunger Games, the tributes will be reaped from the existing pool of victors, making all the other Games look like child’s play. As Peeta and Katniss end up in the arena again (as the only victors of District 12 with the exception of Haymitch), this time surrounded by experienced and vicious killers, President Snow is determined to eliminate them and destroy the rays of hope and the sparks of rebellions brewing up in the Districts. Now Katniss and Peeta must do whatever it takes

to defeat their foes and come out on top once again and ignite the flames of rebellion in Panem.

This is the second movie to be made of Suzanne Collins’s trilogy with the third part expected to be split into two films.

Francis Lawrence (Constantine,I Am Legend, Kings, Water for Elephants) takes over the reins of director on this one and has already been given the green light on the final two parts of this popular franchise.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is based on South African President Nelson Mandela’s autobiography of the same

name, which chronicles his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming

President and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society. Idris Elba (Prometheus, The Wire) stars as Nelson Mandela, Naomie Harris (Skyfall) stars as Winnie Mandela, with Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl) directing.

Its nice to see the Irish getting involved as it was revealed on 17 October 2013, that U2 had written a song specifically for the film entitled “Ordinary Love”.

We here at Bizblitz are calling it now, ‘Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom’ WILL be nominated for Best Picture by the Academy. These types of movie are a shoe in for an Oscar nod, and it might even be possible that Idris Elba gets a nomination too. He will always be Stringer Bell from The Wire in our eyes but this actors star is rising fast and rumours of him playing James Bond are still out there. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Places are offered to students through informal interview. Apart from basic skills in reading and writing, the main entry requirement for a student is a commitment to the approach of Saor-Ollscoil, as set out in its philosophy. Our students are of all ages and walks of

life who share an interest in the life-long learning process. Saor-Ollscoil has an open and flexible system to suit the needs of Mature Students who work at their own pace to achieve the B.A. Degree in a minimum of three years or longer at their own choice.

The Credit System :- The B.A. Degree in the Liberal Arts is awarded on the basis of a maximum of 50 credits on course work and 50 credits on a major thesis (20,000 to 25,000 credits ) The student aims to accumulate between 25 credits and 50 credits on course work over a three year period and between 25 credits and 50 credits on the thesis. A maximum of 5 credits per year is awarded to each individual course taken. Students are encouraged to take two or three courses a year. Credits are also awarded to presentations of work, attendance at seminars, field trips and summer schools.

The annual summer school takes place

the third week of May. This year the subject was James Joyce. A quote from the late Kevin O’Byrne, founder of Saor-Ollscoil na hÉireann. “The Saor-Ollscoil concept of education is one of fitting people to their environment so that they may live wisely in relation to it. It is the function of any university to study the human environment, to conduct research into it, to hand on the results of its research for the benefit of all who wish to live wisely. Learning belongs to everybody. Learning should not be the prerogative of only those who can pay or who can attend at a certain time or in a certain place. Learning is a two way process, those who want to give and those who want to receive. This process can be one between teacher and student or indeed a process of transfer of learning from student to student or by the student’s own in depth research. Nor should learning be bound

by rigid structures but should be creative, open-ended, a free flowing development. The Philosopher, Socrates, who for many represents the ‘Father of Rational Thought’ never earned a fee for his educational discourse. He never charged a fee to those who listened to him as he sat about Athens and he talked. Socrates was interested in the development of the whole man not in only practical wisdom. Saor-Ollscoil bases itself on the Socratic model, both in charging no fee for learning as well as the emphasis on the acquisition of rational thought rather than narrow vocational skills already catered for adequately by society. Saor-Ollscoil in line with the old idea of universities, fosters the coming together of minds to share and develop knowledge for its own sake and the personal development of those involved”.

THE Insurance Institute of Highway Safety today named the all-new 2014 Jeep® Cherokee a 2013 Top Safety Pick.

While leather leggings are a great alternative to bare legs or tights, the staple has been updated with a looser, carrot cut and wide-leg renditions for a more flattering silhouette. It has since gone on to sell over 1.2 million copies in the UK and 2.5 million copies overall, making it the second best-selling The X Factor winner’s single of all time.This is his long awaited debut and if the lead single “your’e nobody til somebody loves you” is anything to go by then this is going to be a cracker of an album.

James Arthur is released on November 4th.

Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP2The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is the upcoming eighth studio album by Eminem. Its a continuation of Eminem’s most acclaimed studio effort, 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP. Production for the album was handled by Eminem and other record producers, including Rick Rubin, Dr. Dre, No ID and Symbolyc One (S1). The album features guest appearances from singers Skylar Grey, Rihanna, and Fun. Frontman Nate Ruess, with the only other rapper appearing on the album being Eminem’s Aftermath label-mate Kendrick Lamar. The lead single “Berzerk”, released on August 27 sold 362,000 digital downloads in its first week.

The Lp is scheduled to be released on November 5th.

One Direction - Midnight MemoriesMidnight Memories is the third studio album by One Direction. The album was described by the band as edgier and as having a “slightly rockier tone” than their previous effortswhich we find very hard to believe. The album’s lead single, “Best Song Ever”, was released on 22 July 2013. Its music video beat the Vevo record for most viewers within 24 hours on Youtube, coming in at 12.3 million views. “Story of My Life” was announced to be the next single on this upcoming album and will be released on 28 October 2013. This is going to sell bucket loads no matter what we say. Enjoy!!

Legendary rock musician Lou Reed died on Sunday, Oct. 27, He was 71. A

statement released by Lou Reed's literary agent, Andrew Wylie, said , "I regret to confirm that Lou Reed has died from complications following a liver transplant." .

The New York native is best known for being a founding member of The Velvet Underground in the late 1960's. The Velvet Underground were a commercial failure in the late 1960s, but the group has gained

a considerable cult following in the years since its demise and has gone on to become one of the most widely cited and influential bands of the era

After his departure from the group, Reed began a solo career in 1972. He had a hit the following year with "Walk on the Wild Side", but subsequently lacked the mainstream commercial success its chart status seemed to indicate. In 1975, Reed released a double album of feedback loops, Metal Machine Music, upon

which he later commented, "No one is supposed to be able to do a thing like that and survive."

He is survived by his wife, musician-performance artist Laurie Anderson. Reed was known for his distinctive deadpan voice, poetic lyrics and for pioneering and coining the term Ostrich guitar.

We are very sad about this untimily news. It really is a very very imperfect day, but we’re glad with spent it with Lou!
